Came with four guests from out of town after a fun beach day in September. My gnocchi with crumbled bacon on top and a creamy pink sauce was divine, and every guest declared their dish delicious. Our guests love seafood, and I'm allergic, so we've tried several Long Beach places for them. Grotta DF pleased them all! Service was genuine and welcoming (without being falsely solicitous) -- love the relaxed vibe! Next time, if we can, we'll dine outside; our table, front right, was in a bit of an echo chamber and we had to shout to chat. This was my 2nd visit here. The first visit was a while back & much more enjoyable. On this visit service and a couple of the mains were disappointing. We went on a Monday evening and were greeted by a very friendly host and got a nice table outside. For starters we ordered the Strawberry & Beet salad, Meatballs & Bruschetta. All were very good. However the big let down was the mains. Our friend got the crab pasta dish and said it tasted terrible & she couldn't eat it. It definitely didn't smell appealing. My husband got the monkfish pasta special and it was slightly better but not great. Luckily I ordered the Lemon Ricotta Gnocchi and it was delicious. Our other friend got the Tuna dish and loved it. He cleared his plate quickly! For desserts they ordered Tiramusui, Olive Cake Affogato & Torta Caprese. All were tasty. However they didn't have Cappincino or hot espresso as machine was broken. The beer selections were limited with no Italian or draft beers available. We ordered Merlot which was very good & reasonably priced. I have to be honest. I wanted to like this place, after all there are so many positive reviews and people said the octopus is a must order. We made reservations for a Sunday night and the place is moderately busy. (Meaning there were tables, but walk ins would have been seated relatively quickly). Our reservations were for 6:30 and here we are at 7:41 with still only half our order. Honestly, the table seated next to us was outside waiting for about 5 minutes after we ordered. So here we are still waiting while they have already received their entrees even though we ordered way before them. I ordered a drink at the beginning of the meal and have not been offered a refill. The food tasted decent but not worth the over hour wait and negligent service. For the prices, I would expect a little more attentiveness and service. Don't get me wrong, the staff was nice. But we definitely felt like an after thought for everything. We had to ask for more water and no one ever came over to check on us. And when we asked about the status of our order, we were given excuses. They said every order went in at the same time. We even ordered another pizza while waiting and that came out before our entrees. We will never come back to this place. The wait time doesn't justify the service and food. It was just ok for me. Update: we decided enough is enough and cancelled our order at 7:55pm and asked for a check for the food we did eat. They told us not to worry about the check. Service was great. Waitress we had was very friendly and attentive. As far as food goes not so great. Mussels were mushy which means old and should not be served. Hopefully they will sample them before serving them in the future. The white clam sauce pizza should be taken off the menu. It's been our local favorite for few years and I hosted my husbands birthday dinner here on Sunday night recently with 12 of us dining. We ordered appetizers, salads and pizzas. I didn't taste all but the white pizza and clam pizza was crowd favorite as well as octopus, polenta fries, porchetta bruschetta. The service was extra attentive, friendly. The veal Milanese was a nice light dish. The salad on top was flavorful and nicely dressed. My husband had the mixed seafood special in a tomato broth which was also very good. Oh my goooodnesss this meal was delicious. My friends live in Long Beach and really wanted to hit up Lost and Found (it's their favorite). Apparently, everyone else seems to feel the same way and on a saturday night a rez there is impossible. Although I'm bummed that we didn't get to try, I'm really stoked that we ended up at Grotta Di Fuoco instead. I walked in, inhaled the smell of fresh and delicious Italian food and instantly knew that I was in for a treat. I was eyeing basically everything on the menu, so luckily we ended up deciding to share a few things. To start, we put in an order of pizza and meatballs. The pizza was topped with goat cheese, fresh parm, pesto and some fresh veggies. It was literally perfect. The meatballs were also great and I thought that the addition of nuts added a nice crunch. For my main I ordered gnocchi with sausage which also came smothered in pesto and cheese. My friend and I split an order, and I loved how they served it to us in two beautifully presented dishes. Other dishes at the table were veal and spaghetti and clams. I snuck a few bites of the veal which was perfectly tender and served over creamy polenta. I didn't try the spaghetti and clams, but heard that it was just okay. We barely had room for dessert, but when some sort of magical peanut butter chocolate cake made it's way to the table I just had to try. Absolutely incredible. I've lived in Long Beach for coming up on two years and jut went to this restaurant last week and it was great in all departments. From setting the reservation, to the greeting and seating from the hostess, to the more than helpful server, and absolutely delicious food as well as the tasteful selection of wine. I had the bone marrow for an appetizer which was perfection and the spaghetti with shrimp and slams whisk was delicious as well. Needless to say I will be a returning customer. Order the rocket salad instead. (My fiancé ordered it and seemed to enjoy it). The breakfast pizza was outstanding. Do yourself a favor and order this: it tastes even better the next day for breakfast. It comes with a slightly runny egg on top, crumbled Italian sausage and cheese. Yum. Last night we popped into Grotta Di Fuoco for dinner. I was looking forward to it because the food it usually good. What I can't understand is there are no menus so you have to scan a barcode for the menu. Unfortunately the internet service in there is terrible. So in order to scan the menu I have to now join their Wi-Fi. The waitress with a heavy accent tried to tell me what the password was. She was very curt with me and acted like it was my fault I couldn't understand her. After three unsuccessful attempts at joining their Wi-Fi I decided this was to much work to do to try and order a meal. Maybe post the Wi-Fi password or something, or invest in menus! The staff there is unbelievable. We waited 45 minutes to sit outside. Fine she told us that no prob. We had to wait for a table to finish up. Then at the 45 minute mark they carry out a new table (WHAT?!?) and give it to someone else?!?! I then notice her handing the check to a table (no one else is waiting so I say something) she says if I want to sit inside I can sit now-- what? I waited an hour to sit inside where you had tables right away?!? Then the waitress didn't want to come over once we did sit. We had to get up and ask for menus, ask for someone to come order. Limited menu though and no option to add protein to a salad which would've been nice Then I see all the staff sitting at the tables smoking! What? Why are you in front of the restaurant smoking? Came here for the first time tonight for a celebratory dinner and couldn't have been more pleased with our meals. Made reservations for 7:30 and were promptly seated upon arrival. The restaurant was definitely packed, and it seemed as if there weren't enough servers, since there were times the service could have been a bit better (would have loved to order a second drink), but the delicious meal outshines any glitches with service. We started with the rocket salad which was by far one of the best salads I've ever had. It's light, fresh and the lemon zest adds the perfect hint of citrus to an already delicious combination of ingredients. I can't wait to eat this again! For dinner, we both had pasta dishes- because when homemade pasta is on the menu, you don't turn that down. I ordered the squid ink tortellini, which was stuffed with lobster and served in a tomato and garlic brodo, and it was out of this world. The pasta was fresh, the dish was tasty and the portion was generous. I can never finish my main course, but I had no problem finishing this one- and I honestly didn't want my dinner to end. Since we were so pleased with our first two courses, I just had to order dessert. All options sounded delicious and unique, but we decided to go for the olive cake, which was served with a blood orange sorbet, dark chocolate ganache, hazelnuts and orange rinds-- and OMG. The combination of dark chocolate, with refreshing blood orange and moist bite of cake was perfection. This restaurant is a true gem in Long Beach and I can't wait to take friends when they visit. I had the opportunity of visiting Grotta Di Fuoco on its opening weekend and was more than pleasantly surprised. Dimly lit, the restaurant reminded me of the small restaurant and bar outside the entrance of the Frasassi Caves in Genga Ancona, Italy. The stained concrete floors and industrial fixtures evoked the sense of a mining atmosphere. At the end of the bar stood the brick oven, that remained as the only remnants of the Caffe Laguna, however, only in its role at the Grotta Di Fuoco has it truly been utilized and reborn. Busy, a business client and I stood at the end of the bar and enjoyed small plates and brick a brick oven pizza. We chatted with the Chef / Owner Andrew about his bone marror or gnudi with broccoli rabe pesto and were thoroughly impressed by the panna cotta with smoked figs and rhubarb or the pastry chef's olive oil cake with raspberry sorbet. Pretentious and offensive in a way you never experience in LB. Adult couple, LB locals out for dinner on a rainy summer Tuesday. Walked into a completely empty Grotto at 6 PM. The hostess was snobby and unwelcoming from the moment we told her we didn't have reservations to the completely empty restaurant. We asked to sit at the bar for dinner and were practically scoffed at for requesting that. Upon sitting the bartender(bar maid?) took about 10-15 minutes to ask us(her only customers at that moment) for our drink orders. I was unaware of the craft drink made only our way policy Grotto seems to have and the bartender was nothing short of rude and condescending in explaining that to me. We were given menus and patiently waited to put in our food order.......for over 20 minutes......and then treated like an inconvenience when we finally asked if we could order. After another few minutes without getting to order we finally decided to leave and go to somewhere more hospitable and friendly. Paid our tab and politely left. 20 years frequenting most of the fine establishments in LB/PLO/AB and this was the worst customer experience we have ever experienced. It felt as if they didn't want us there or maybe it's just too snobby of an environment for us to be comfortable ‍, drove on down to Beginnings and had our usual fantastic experience there. Excellent. Spaghetti and Clams were good.. But a little underwhelming. I would go for something a little more Exciting next time like the wild boar Bolognese. Either way- home made pasta, delicious sauces and flavors. Veal meatballs were grade A.. Sauce was so good. Gnocchi was on point as well. Old school Italian food with a modern day twist. We had one of the pizzas which was also out of this world. Chocolate Mouse dessert was insane as well. If you want meat with parmigiana cheese and sauce then this isn't the spot to go. Came here for the first time by recommendation of others and overall was not impressed. Two stars given for the good service and atmosphere, but my group left feeling like the food just wasn't that good. We started with the meatballs (which were the favorite) and pork bruschetta. For entrees, the half chicken was doused in lemon which took away from the other flavors, the gnocchi was just OK with the sausage being oddly crunchy and the alla Norma pasta was unevenly cooked, al dente in some places and very soft in others. This comes from a long time resident. This meal could have been pleasant. However, I WILL NEVER patronize this establishment again. The food was fine. The atmosphere was like a a frat house. We were sitting next to two other couples all stunned at the managements lackadaisical approach to a table of six raucous clients. We spoke to "management" who apologized by saying one of the table members was moving. They offered no discounts, or apologies. Stupid as we three couples made plans to meet at a classier establishment on the north shore. This is not the first time here. We had hoped the management had wisened up.
