This was the first time at this restaurant and the last. The octopus appetizer was small and not fresh tasting, and in a sauce that was black, but otherwise nondescript. I ordered monkfish for my entrée, which is one of my favorite fishes in general. This was covered in dry Icky bacon and there was barely any fish within the bacon. I'm not even sure there was fish. It was over a bit of what I believe is orzo which was good. The brownie dessert with hazelnut ice cream was a C+ as the brownie was unappealing, but the ice cream/gelato was good. We went on a Friday night without any reservations, needless to say the wait time was a bit long. We were told about an hour and we decided to wait. About 15 mins in they let us know there were a couple of seats at the bar if we were interested, usually not a fan but the bar was very roomy and they had partitions in between parties- plus we got the seats at the end next to the oven so no complaints. We ordered the caprese salad to start and it was super yummy- tomatoes were ripe, mozzarella was fresh and the croutons were crispy. We also got the margherita pizza, chicken parmigiana and the campanelle pasta. Pizza was delicious, hot and with a nice char. The chicken was thick yet very well cooked and SO juicy, I know chicken parm is hard to mess up but this one was outstanding. The pasta was also really good, I just wish it was bolder in flavor. Lastly we got the torta caprese for dessert. It was good but extremely salty, i'm sure it was supposed to be a bit salty but this tasted like they accidentally added extra salt, it was almost unbearable. I can't even begin to say how great this place was. My wife and I came here on a recommendation for our anniversary dinner from a friend who comes from LB and he was totally right. Food was AMAZING! Service was OUTSTANDING! Our waitress was very attentive and available, she made great recommendations and they were totally spot on. The eggplant fries were sooooooo good, and the chicken/meat was incredibly delicious. We ordered a bottle of chianti and it was only $25! Great flavor to pair with our meal! We had the pistachio ice cream with raspberry sorbet, it was insanely good, can't say enough about it. Did I mention that they played classic rock the whole time? Go to Grotta if you want perfectly al dente, fresh pasta with outrageous sauces and some pretty innovative combinations. I tried the basil pasta with the veggie bolognese and it was fantastic. I am not a vegetarian, but with that dish I could be. I have never had anything here I didn't thoroughly enjoy. They have a brick oven where they fresh bake pizzas in front of you. I was greatly impressed by the attractive aroma once you walk in. The dining room looked great. Staff was pleasant. The food was very good and service once we were seated was amazing. This is a place I would keep on my list and visit again. Reason for once less star, We did not have reservations so was given a time to return by. When we returned there were some tables clearing up. Staff seemed a little confused on how seating should be done. It's 10pm. We were a party of 3 several 2 party tables were open, none yet together. Maybe seat us at the open 6 seat table. Grotta is the best restaurant in Long Beach, and one of the best on Long Island, hands down. Everything vibes at this place - a lively setting, genius cocktails, BANGIN pizza, and a well thought out menu that surprises and delights. If you're looking for another (yawn) typical Italian restaurant serving huge portions of mediocre chicken parm and $5 glasses of Cabernet, you're not gonna find it here. I drive an hour from Queens to eat here, it's that good! The flavor combinations are unique and the dishes are always well balanced (both texture and flavor). Portions are fair for the price since you are getting a well crafted dish with quality ingredients. They are also small enough that you can enjoy the complimentary warm bread, an appetizer and a dessert and not be so full that you need to unbutton your pants. Tonight we tried the fluke crudeo special for an appetizer, the scallops, a special pizza (potato, asparagus, cherry peppers) and the chocolate peanut butter desert (bundio?). The crudeo was bright and fresh. The scallops (5) where big and sweet and tender. The corn mixture underneath is so good you can order it as a seperate side dish! Pizza was awesome. Couldn't tell from the menu but the bundio is like a really rich pudding. It's decadent without being too sweet or heavy and the flavors and textures were so well balanced. My only complaint was that it's plated in a flat bottom bowl so it's hard to get at. (Although I'm 99% sure they did that so people would stop licking the plate.) In the past I've had the calzonie pizza, the gnocchi and some of the specials. Their gnocchi are the best I've ever had. Finally made it here with some friends. Authentic flavorful Italian food. The price is on a higher end compared to other Italian restaurants, service, food and drink quality is superb proving it is well worth the money. The octopus appetizer was up there on one of the top octopus I've ever had, crispy on the outside but very tender on the inside. My scallops too were delectable, I could cut them with a fork, delicious. Though I was full by the time I finished I still craved more! The variety of wine and beer menu was right up our alley. They have a lot of nice imports which all that we tried, which was recommended by our server, was perfect to our liking. I would totally go back again any try what they've got new for the season. Came here on a Friday night with my friend around 8pm. We were seated promptly as there were open tables, though I did call ahead to reserve - just to be safe, ya know? Servers were super friendly. Ambiance was stellar. Loved the decor and lighting. We found it to be a little noisy, I can imagine it being a bigger issue if the restaurant was more crowded as well. My friend and I shared everything we ordered. We started with the octopus. Underwhelmed. We then had the formaggio pizza and the brussel sprout and kale salad. The pizza was a nice thin crust, perfect for sharing and the salad was a nice portion as well. However, the flavors didn't do anything for us. Wasn't bad, but just was nothing special. I'll start it off nicely by saying that the drink I ordered was excellent. I had the Blood Moon; can't remember what was in it but it left an impression. Came here at 6 on a Saturday and found a mostly empty restaurant. The host informed my mother and I that all of these empty tables were reserved. Apparently this place is in high demand. We sat at the bar and I made a note of when these tables actually become full; not until around 730. But I digress. The bartender seemed a little annoyed but that's not what the lack of stars is for. It all comes down to the food. I ordered the steak and my mother, the scallops. While the cook was right, the sauce just wasn't cutting it. And the potatoes that accompanied it were dry. The scallops could have been great but were just way over cooked. They tasted like rubber. Luckily. we had a voucher which was the only reason we were there in the first place. Grotta has been around for a bit now, but still seems to be a hidden gem in the LB. From the street look for a nice lil metal pig and you've found the place. When you head downstairs, you can tell it's not your average LB eatery. Attention was paid to the details here and the 'cave' theme, with brick and wine barrels on the walls, really works. The menu... is delightful. It's not too big, but has something for everyone. Faves are the ricotta gnocchi, any scarpariello, most of the salads, the S'mored dessert (gooood), and the legit cocktail (and wine) list. There are so many more winners... but I'm having a senior moment. Bottom line, if you're looking for something better than the typical LB American cuisine, come here. You won't be disappointed. Top notch, fine Italian cuisine comes to Long Beach! The Mrs. and I came here last night and I wasn't sure what to expect. Almost reflexively, I always have this underlying apprehension about new "Italian" restaurants on Long Island. The "here we go again" type of mentality, just like when HSBC and the other faceless banking institutions smear their corporate logo feces all over our sacred diners, and other various eating haunts. Banks and Italian restaurants, that's essentially 80% of all Long Island businesses right now. It doesn't help that Grotta Di Fuoco is directly across the street from Minnesotas, one of the last LB bastions for steroid-riddled meatheads and bros to bro out at a place that practically prides itself on historically bad service, sticky floors and music that makes you want to Van Gogh yourself. But I digress. I managed to overcome my apprehension almost immediately when I sat down inside a charming little place. I've read reviews that say this place is cramped. It may be a bit tight in spots, but I never felt like I was on top of the person next to me, even though our elbows did manage to make friends now and again. Perhaps it was my delicious bourbon, honey and black tea concoction that wet my palette and soothed my soul, but I couldn't have been more comfortable. Rather than the standard, nondescript orchestral musings from some obscure string quartet, we were treated to Rolling Stones, the Doors and other dependable selections (but also Fleetwood Mac, who I hate for personal reasons, but such is neither here nor there). It was audible but not distracting at all. Great choice. To the food. I started with the charred octopus, with sauteed white beans and beet greens (my favorite!). This was spectacular. Feeling a little brazen after finishing my surprisingly effective cocktail, my wife had to stop me from ordering a second one before our entrees came out. The octopus was cooked perfectly, the beans were soft on the outside but crunchy on the inside, and the beet greens added that hint of natural sweetness that really brought out the tastiness of the octopus. A truly perfect bite when sampled together. The Mrs. had the eggplant fries. They were crispy and delicious. I recommend a squirt of lemon with these (her idea, all the way), it really brings out the flavor nicely. For entrees, I had the pan roasted swordfish with eggplant caponata, olives, roasted fennel and grilled polenta. It was a HUGE piece of fish but it was as moist and tasty as any swordfish I've had. Again, it was great sampling each individual aspect of this dish, but putting the fish, caponata, fennel and olive together in one bite was money in the bank. Nothing got lost, the flavors weren't muddled, just a terrific and well-composed balanced dish. The Mrs. had shrimp and mussels over homemade pasta. It was very good, nothing great, easily the least impressive dish we had of the 4 but it was definitely quality. For dessert we had the smore which was charred marshmallow over homemade brownie and gelato. Very nice ending to the meal. Again, just well executed - not too sweet, not a humongous portion, just right. It's great to see LB stepping up its food game and while I haven't yet had the luxury of going to Lost & Found, Grotta Di Fuoco is at the top of the class right now. Some people have the gall to chide it for being expensive. Listen up, if you want $15 chicken parm, head to West End Pizza. It's a perfectly adequate meal that won't bust your velcro wallet. Leave the fine dining to those of us with real jobs and discerning palettes. For 2 appetizers, a drink, 2 entrees and a dessert, the bill was about $100. Sounds good to me for a thoroughly satisfying meal in a great setting. read more

"Roasted bone marrow in Long Beach? Now I've seen everything!" -- some lady. Manhattan style dining and creativity is rare in these parts. Chef Andrew seems to be killing it so far, and his restaurant is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. I know the chef's name because about 13 different people recommended I try this place based on his reputation, so needless to say he's a popular guy. We started with roasted bone marrow, veal meatballs, and grilled calamari. Bone marrow was a great portion for only $8 and delicious. Same could be said for the calamari at $9. And the meatballs were awesome. Next we had homemade ricotta gnocchi with broccoli rabe pesto and crumbled sauzeeeeg. That's not a typo, that's how I say sausage, keep up. Anyway, it was lick the plate amazing. We then, being the fat bastards that we are, had the tre porcellini brick oven pizza. My only complaint is that I like when the prosciutto and guanciale get a little crispier, could've used another minute in the oven. Regardless, it was great. Homemade Italian cheesecake for dessert, with fresh whipped cream and berries...yes please. Mike, our server, was top notch, super attentive. Wine list was solid. Long Beach native and foodie, have to say they did a great job with the menu. Went tonight and had an overall amazing experience due to the wonderful staff! Started with the bone marrow, it's the first time I've had it so not much to compare too but it was delicious and I will try it again. The gnocchi is out of this world!!! The clam pasta was also good. I was lucky enough to try two desserts but the chocolate dessert was by far the best dessert I have had in a restaurant this year. An Italian food renaissance is coming to the south shore, and Grotta is a part of it. We can stop defining Italian as marinara or mozzarella soaked food. The chef here lets ingredients speak for themselves. West End has great food, but few places with a "date night" feel potential. Check on that here. Decor wise, they've done wonders with this basement (grotta) space. Feels much more open and welcoming than past businesses (Italian restaurants) in this space. Didn't meet the chef but he sounds like the real deal! Our server on Friday night did a great job of telling the story of how he is inspired to work with fresh ingredients (hence the different and innovative specials every night). First and foremost, the ambiance and decor of the restaurant is very cozy and almost rustic...intimate. However, it's a little bit small so you are either sitting by the door or by the kitchen at most tables. Appetizers: We tried 3 (one each) - the bone marrow was very good, but needed a little bit of salt. The tuna crudo was good and had a really nice citrus finish...the pairing of vegetables with it was done very well. I didn't have the veal meatballs but I think that was the favorite at the table. Entrees: The four cheese pizza with sausage was pretty good (my friend had it). My other friend had the pasta with seafood (clams, shrimp,white wine broth) and said it lacked flavor and was just ok - but after eating it said that he enjoyed it more than he thought. I had the sea bream....I was AMAZED. It was done to perfection and delicious - I highly recommend this dish! Even the lima beans were done really well to compliment the fish. I would give this restaurant a five just for the entree. Dessert: The steamed brownie was good - served on a lemon ice. The panna cotta wasn't really creamy or what i'm used to, but i like the balsamic vinegar on it. Bottom line: The chef is VERY creative with his menu and pairs flavors that the diner wouldn't normally think of. This alone is impressive and is a reason to go back. Also the service was impeccable - our waiter was Lorenzo. He's great, brought out the food at the right time, gave fantastic wine selections suited to what we were looking for and checked in on us the right amount of times. Pricing isn't that bad. We chose to sit outside and though we were for a while the only people outside we weren't forgotten and we were very well attended by the staff. The food was fresh and well prepared. We dined here this past Sunday evening and let me say that we were all, party of 5, extremely happy with our food & service. I don't write reviews but I felt compelled as there was a party having a good time, that other guests didn't take to very well. These people, not the fun party, were nasty and rude to the workers and tried to get others in restaurant on board with them. Threatening bad reviews and asking for free stuff all because another group is having a nice time is a little over the top. Our group enjoyed 2 pizzas, octopus, several pastas and dessert and couldn't be happier to have been there. Kudos to the staff for handeling themselves professionally with such rude clients!
