I had high hopes for this place because of how cute the outside is. The coffee was subpar because my hot dirty chai and iced mocha just tasted like espresso. I was hoping for some spiced flavor. The long sandwiches were kind of mid and bland. I had to drench my sandwich in hot sauce for some flavor. Compared to all the cafes in Philly, I just know there's a few with better coffee and sandwiches. Also, there were a lot of flies in the seating area, although it was inside and in the back. I was so impressed with this establishment today. I think the name of the shop is misleading since it is so much more than just a coffee shop. While they do serve Elixir coffee and other drinks, they have a full food menu unlike most other "coffee shops." They have sandwiches and granola and a variety of pastries. As someone who always is on the hunt for the perfect egg and cheese, I was so excited to try one where the egg was fried (not baked) and the cheese was perfectly melted on top. Ground Up is a cute coffee shop on East Passyunk with nice indoor seating and one outdoor table for two. We came on a weekday morning and they had a good crowd. I think they use Elixir coffee which I always enjoy. We each ordered iced oat lattes - both were good, but the ice was mostly melted before walking out the door. Not a huge deal as we just added more when we got home. They have a great selection of flavors to add, including white chocolate and toasted coconut - our choices today. Ground Up Cafe is a great neighborhood spot. I go regularly for their sandwiches. I like their chicken salad on either a wrap or croissant the best! I also order the tuna salad sandwich regularly. And sometimes I order the BLT or bacon, egg and cheese on a croissant...both of those sandwiches are good, too! The think I appreciate the most is the consistency of how the chicken salad and tuna salad are made. You always know what you're going to get. It's not like some places where the consistency or flavors change day by day. So hats off to the Ground Up team for doing what they do so well! Horrible customer service. I work nearby and visited this shop twice. Both times greeted by Elizabeth, who greets me with no smile, very dismissive. They gave me hard time bc I asked for extra sugar because you can not modify your drink. "We don't add sugar, because it's sweet enough already. So we just have you guys ask for it on the side" It's my preference so it shouldn't matter if I'm willing to pay. The second time I came will be the last, walked to be greeted by Elizabeth with a straight face, I asked for liquid sugar, she respond "what?" I repeated "May I have a little more extra sugar added?" Stumbled upon this adorable place today! A hidden gem in South Philly! Adorable tables, succulents, placemats, and the most friendly staff! They have a pretty big menu for a quaint coffee shop! I got a vanilla iced latte which was amazing! The avocado toast was layered with goodness! Delicious bread stacked with pesto, fresh tomato, chunks of mozzarella, avocado, and a balsamic glaze! The pastries are great. They are what you think of when you get that type of pastry- I love the chocolate scone- especially heated up a bit. For lunch the chicken salad is maybe the best I've had. Also, I would bring in my dog, Winnie, and she'd always give a treat and a pet. Please check out ground up- they are also excellent for ordering online for pickup or delivery. I love this place. I order their bacon, egg, and cheese and their tomato, arugula, red onion, and cream cheese sandwiches the most frequently. The egg and cheese is prepared excellently. The ingredients, especially the veggies, are always fresh. The coffee is from "Elixir" and, while it was my first time having them (I've heard a lot) I was very impressed! The croissants are also delicious. I've been going back at least once a week or so for breakfast. Only very small issues are preventing me from 5 stars. I think the quality of their bagels could be better and that the ordering process could be a bit more organized. The menus I see online versus on paper are a bit different, and I've seen a few different phone numbers being used. Additionally, and this is just a pet peeve of mine, when I call ahead, Ground Up responds with "Hello?" as though I have the wrong number. Try a greeting like "Hi this is Ground Up!" so I'm comfortable moving the conversation along. But hey, the great tasting food, deserts, and drinks is all I really need for a good restaurant. read more

Ground Up is my #1 go to. At first, I would have bacon, egg and cheese on a croissant nearly every single morning. I think it's the only thing that got me through the Covid shut down. I had something to look forward to every day! After that, I moved on to avocado toast, nearly every single day for probably two years! The pesto and the balsamic... it's just the most amazing combination. And the bread she uses is perfect. Recently, I've gone gluten free, and it generally sucks, but Ground Up has really worked with me create delicious options. Heck, sometimes I just get peanut butter and jelly's from there somehow when they make it it always taste better. Im really glad to see small shops still open for business during the pandemic, and the location of this place is gorgeous. The storefront of this place looks very pleasant and I love the aesthetics. Ordered a cold brew and an iced mocha. I think the cold brew was smooth, but was a tad water down but nevertheless I think it's still worth getting. It might have been just water downed from the ice really... Other than that I have no complaints! The mocha is pleasant and not overly caked with overly sweet chocolate It was the perfect espresso, milk and chocolate ratio. This was great to have in a warm afternoon August summers day. For the longest time I had no idea this coffee shop was here, as it's on a quieter block of East Passyunk that I don't often walk down. I'm so glad I checked it out because my experience there was fantastic. It's very relaxed and quiet (read: not blaring loud music), the baristas were super nice, their coffee was delicious (I had a latte and my friend said her chai was the best she's ever had), and I have been daydreaming about the gooey perfection of their bacon egg & cheese on an english muffin sandwich ever since. I really wanted to like this place. It's a little basic inside. I ordered a tea drink, and they just poured water and milk in the cup and put a tea bag in, so it wasn't steeped at all, and it just tasted like warm milk.
