Such a cute casual place! The walls are covered in Philadelphia inspired art and sports memorabilia. As someone visiting the city, I loved it! We got two coffees (Americanos) and two breakfast sandwiches (one pork roll, American cheese and egg on a croissant and one bacon, American cheese and egg on a sesame seed bagel). Both sandwiches were delicious and the Americanos were surprisingly good, especially because it's such a simple drink. The service was solid - we ordered ahead online and our food was hot and ready to go when we arrived 15 min later. Definitely a cute coffee shop to visit for breakfast. read more

Closer to a 4.5. Fun ambiance and good food but room for improvement. Got the yobo, steak burrito, side pancake, an iced latte with banana cold foam and an americano. Favorite was steak burrito. Perfectly seasoned, filled with steak and gooey cheese. The yobo was fun and super filling, my only thing is I wished the waffle ridges would be a little less hard. It was getting close to the scraping roof the mouth situation. Pancakes were decent, it feels very homey. Coffees were good but I can't say it's the best I've had but I wouldn't mind getting them again if I was getting food here. read more

HomeGrown fills an area void of decent coffee in the area South of Passyunk Ave/West of Broad. Parking is typical for South Philly, get it where you can with angled parking and regular street parking. The interior is colorful and the walls are art filled with nods to Philly sports, famous Philadelphians and most importantly some Italian heritage of South Philly. The theme matches the HomeGrown name, but can get a bit tiring in my humble opinion. There were a few seats inside and outside there were a few tables and benches. The inside was clean and the kitchen area in the back was spotless. The menu boards are colorful with details of all offerings except food prices which have a disclaimer at the bottom that prices are subject to change. Photos of their Jan 2022 prices show breakfast sammies at $7.49, but currently they are $12.99. The staff was friendly. Their coffee is Bean2Bean which has a heck of a presence in the Philly market. On my first visit I tried their drip coffee and an espresso. The drip coffee was a simple medium roast with earthy notes along with berry and light chocolate. I would guess its Bean2Bean Schuylkill Select. If your into Dunkin's regular coffee this would be its equal. The espresso (possibly Bean2Bean '76 espresso) was strong and bold with caramel and dark chocolate. On my second visit I had a double macchiato $3.49+.99 and a sausage, egg and cheese on a jalapeno bagel $12.99. I had no idea the price was $12.99 until I was rung up (plus a 4% fee). The sandwich was big with two round pieces of sausage, a ton of egg on a bland bagel. If I had to do it all over again, I would go with the sandwich on a roll from Cacia's bakery. The macchiato was strong and made just right. I had a good experience at HomeGrown. Pricing on the menu boards would be great (if I missed it I apologize, but I didn't see pricing on the TV's). The portion was huge as was the price. Maybe adding an additional lower priced/smaller portion to their breakfast sandwiches could work? Next trip I'll try their cheesesteak off the lunch menu. It's a small place on the corner, but walking in we were immediately greeted and took some time to look at the menu. The place is very homey. I went with the s'mores iced coffee and my sister got the strawberry green tea. Both were very good and tasty. For our food we decided to eat in and get the Box Breakfast. Whew, the reviews do not lie about the tater tots, they are super crispy. The pancakes and French toast were delicious, everything was well seasoned as well. Let me say, the coffee was great. The breakfast food I got ($46) was horrendous. I waited around 15/20 minutes for a breakfast box and was blessed with aramark-quality microwavable/toaster oven waffles, sausage and eggs. I don't think a single thing was made back there. Which is crazy because there were about 12 staff behind the counter, not a single one cooking. "This place has some really good reviews", I thought. Now I see, theres something fishy going in here, because the food was not good, the service was okay at best, and the vibes inside of the restaurant were cool. I give 2 stars, and the only thing that warrants more than 1 are the newspapers and pictures in the walls. If you're coming here for a good meal, my suggestion is don't. Let's just call it....anytime you see an establishment called Homegrown and Coffee in the same sentence you have to try it...no questions asked you just have to pop your head in there and look for signs of cooking and coffee. I lucked up and found relatively close street parking and walker into the store to the perfect smell of breakfast and coffee. Everything is cooked fresh straight from the griddle. I took a seat to wait for my food and was instantly greeted and asked if I was waiting for an order. I tried the steak and cheese, pork roll, pancakes to go, and a breakfast burrito that makes you want to drive from MD. Great little corner neighborhood spot with freshly baked muffins, bagel sammies and La Colombe! Oh, and yummy avocado toast! Yes please! The owners couldn't be sweeter and the place is so welcoming, but we prefer to sit outside in their cozy two person handmade wood bench, especially when we bring the pup along. This is such a great place in South Philly to grab a quick cup of joe. The owner even made me freshly brewed unsweetened iced tea that's not listed during my last visit.
