I grabbed a burger and fries before my flight at Grounded in St. Louis. It's basically like a Wendy's with curly fries and tots. The burgers are made to order so I had to wait for a few minutes. They have a small seating area to the right of the register, I got my burger and curly fries in about 10 minutes. Fries were okay. The burger was a triple, and it tasted like a really fresh Wendy's burger. And it's basically the same price as Wendy's these days so this was pretty cheap at $15 an airport. read more

For some background information, I work as flight crew so I go to a fair share of airport restaurants. I found myself with a layover in STL so I decided to give this burger place a shot. Overall the food was good, the customer service was weird and lacking. I walked up and there was no one behind the counter for a minute or so, but also no line so I get it. Then a lady came through a door from the kitchen and stood at the cash register. Now I'm gen Z, and I've heard about the gen z stare, but I brushed it off at people misinterpreting. However, this girl said absolutely nothing and stared at me. I stared back and considered just waiting to see who would break first. But then I decided against that and went the route of "maybe I can get her to warm up to me by being nice!" So I said "hello how are you doing today?" She replied "good" and then continued to stare. I gave up and then just started my order. Felt rude but at least I tried. I asked if I could get tater tots instead of fries, and she silently pressed buttons on the register so I assumed that meant yes. I ordered a specialty burger and my tots and a drink and it came up to about $25. Expensive, but not unheard of I suppose. I was silently given my drink and receipt and then waited about 7 minutes and then I was silently handed my food. I sat down and looked at my receipt and saw that instead of substituting total for fries, they just said "no fries" and then charged me for a side of tots. Would've kinda been nice to know they would do that. I went up and inquired about the charge and then she said "we can't substitute" so then I asked "ok so did I pay for fries and then not receive them?" And then she said "no the fries come free with the burger" so then I asked "oh can I get the free fries?" And she said "sure" so I mean now I have an extra container of fries. I walked up to the register to order, and the employee was just standing back by the kitchen. She saw me but didnt make any effort to take my order. My dreadful burger streak continues, this time in St. Louis. Grounded has got a lot of nerve in trying to market themselves as a gourmet, independently owned chain. For 7 bucks you are not getting what you paid for. In fact, this burger was probably worse than McDonalds, and I've had better at BK. The meat was so bland, dry, and the patty was incredibly thin. The baja crunch was far from being crunchy. I asked for extra avocado but it seems like they did the reverse as there was barely any. The tortilla chips in it were soggy and everything was thrown together on top of a few pieces of lettuce. Don't fall into the trap of the branding or name - it is no where close to being gourmet or worth the $7 price tag. At best, a burger like this should only be found on a dollar menu. Best part about Grounded- the food. I didn't have high hopes after my interaction with the staff, but it was actually pretty decent food. Not anything to write home about, but miles from bad. Was on the run at St. Louis airport and made a quick stop at this counter hamburger and breakfast spot for breakfast. Didn't check Yelp first which was a mistake. Ordered an egg and cheese and got a greasy mess on a hamburger roll - I get you are trying to consolidate inventory but hamburger roll for egg and cheese is basically against the law where I come from. What happened to that golden sand which on the beautiful ciabatta roll that was on the video board??? With that said its an airport breakfast sandwich so my expectations were pretty low.
