This place is much more of a hole in the wall than you'd imagine. I parked right out front, and I still had a hard time finding it. A guy from my running group asked me which way it was, and I was like, "Uh, I think it's that way." A few places on this strip all have similar awnings. I thought I was lucky finding such a good spot. By the time I was done with my run, maybe an hour later, all of Clayton was an absolute ghost town. It makes me wonder what they'd have to put here to get people to visit Clayton during the evening, a 7 Brew? Inside is more along the lines of a bar, with a number of beers on tap and decor that may have been purchased from a Kohl's. I appreciated the way they had the beers on tap written on the wall in ginormous fonts, and I'm sure the elderly are similarly appreciative. Sometimes you ask these waiters what beers they have on tap and they act like they're doing you a favor by listing them. I asked this hillbilly they've got waiting tables at the Syberg's over on Dorsett what beers they have on tap, and he just said they have 30 of them. Uh, thanks? I wonder if he counted them. I went with the 4 Hands Incarnation, which I have at least once a week, because I get it for free. It seemed less "high gravity" than it does when you get it in the tall cans.Hmm... Usually, my move at these burger places is to order a bacon cheeseburger or a specialty burger that has bacon on it. 5 Star had such a burger listed first on their menu, making my choice easy enough. I toyed with the idea of ordering the Green Chile Cheeseburger, but not seriously. I wasn't sure what the green chiles would taste like, and what if they turned out to be gross? The Blue Ribbon Burger comes with bacon, port-braised onions and Gorgonzola cheese, along with LTOP. No, that's not a typo. You get thinly sliced red onions in addition to the port-braised onions. It feels weirdly generous of them, even though they're just onions, and all the fresh toppings are of a seemingly high quality. I was more ambivalent about the toppings specific to the Blue Ribbon Burger. I didn't dislike them, but I was less impressed by them than I would have expected. The bacon was good, but it was in crumbles and I think I would have liked it more if it were in thick, crispy strips. No Diddy. The cheese was either not flavorful enough or in not abundant enough quantity to be much of a factor. The onions, on the other hand, provided a nice flavor kick--less tart than I expected, more along the lines of the onions in a french onion soup. The fries were kinda whatever. They were good, being french fries and all, but not as gourmet as the menu would have you think. And they don't give you very many of them, if you get the regular serving. Weirdly, the regular serving doesn't cost much money, by Brandon-era standards, but the serving-size is decidedly skimpy. Why not just charge a normal amount and give you a normal quantity? Even the large won't exactly break the bank. I went with the small because I just wanted to see what they were like, for the sake of citizen food journalism. You're welcome. read more

After raining earlier in day, Lynne and I were able to find a patio table on a Saturday night. We love eating al fresco, so bonus on getting a table and being to watch the fancy cars driving by! However, we soon discovered the restaurant was short staffed and servers were in the deep weeds. It took a very long time to order water and drinks and an equally long time to receive them. In fact, we were very close to leaving, which is saying a lot since I've worked in restaurants for years. But this is not a negative review. As those who know, know....5 Star's kitchen crew saved the day by jumping right on our food order and getting us served quickly. Lynne enjoyed the always delicious Blue Ribbon burger...think gorganzola, bacon and port braised onions (aaahhh, sorry, I may have drooled a bit there). I tried the Burger-Of-The-Month, which was not actually a burger, but a sandwich And not just any sandwich, a classic Rueben. I love a good Rueben and this 5-Star version did not disappoint....loads of moist corned beef (yes, I said moist), sauerkraut, Thousand Island dressing on marbled Rye! I have a friend named Bob from Cincinatti. When he comes into town we go to a place to get him a burger. This means I should have a few burger reviews. We arrived a little later in the day which meant we got good parking - Clayton is always "iffy". We also had fun service. There were a couple guys there cleaning and singing. We loved that. I've seen this pop up across Yelp a few times and decided to give it a try since we were near the area. We came on Saturday and going street parking close to the resturant. No parking on Saturday is a plus. No wait to sit inside and out wasn't crowded but steady. They also have outside seating for nice days. We were greeted immediately upon sitting and our server was spot on. 2 of us ordered the 5 Star burger, 1 a grilled chicken sandwich and 1 bison burger. The sandwiches were good and the fries too. However my hubby did not like his bison burger which was a surprise because he usually enjoys bison burgers. He says it just didn't taste as good. The family all got different burgers, and all were in fact 5 stars! We also got the fried pickles (awesome!) and the mixed fry basket. Service was very good! I was visiting on a work trip but the waiter helped me get around! It was pretty busy on a workday lunch. I liked my burger of the month but it wasn't my favorite burger of all time. My milkshake was fantastic and they even gave me pretty much another full glass of "extra". That's how you do it right! My family and I had lunch at 5 Star and enjoyed it. We were seated very quickly and the service was good. We also enjoyed the music played throughout the restaurant. My daughter ordered The Breakfast of Champions, a side of onion rings, and a vanilla milkshake. She really liked her burger (especially the egg on top) and rings. She said she would like her shake a little sweeter but enjoyed the consistency and appreciated that it wasn't hard to drink. She loved how crispy the onion rings were and that they onion itself wasn't slimy. My husband ordered the Patty melt, coleslaw, and cheese curds. He said it was cooked to perfection, juicy, had a great sauce, and the bread was toasted just right. He liked the cheese curds but would have liked it more if they had marinara sauce as an option. He did not like the coleslaw and thought it was bland. He appreciated that they had his favorite beer on tap, the Civil Life Brown Ale. I ordered the Blackened Barramundi with a side of fries. 5 star burgers has some of the best burgers in St. Louis hands down! I had (and always get) the Bison burger and fries! It was cooked perfectly! I also decided to grab an off menu drink from the bar, a whiskey sour, and I was extremely impressed. Both the waitress and the bartender were so gracious and complementary of how drinks are made, and the skill behind who was making the drinks. It was evident when I took my first sip, lol! 5 star burgers is in Clayton on Maryland along the strip and it seems like a small restaurant from the outside, but when you walk in is actually a lot bigger than it looks like. The bar area is really small so if you go for happy hour I will suggest going right at the beginning if you want to get a decent seat. this is one of my favorite places and I will make sure to come back again. read more

This is a really cute restaurant, located in a charming area. Parking is limited, had to parallel park. Staff was very friendly and had my order hot and ready. Grabbed lunch at 5 Star Burgers in Clayton and walked out wondering why I haven't been coming here for years. The bacon cheeseburger is built for people who actually want to taste beef. The half-pound patty came out medium-rare with real char marks and seasoning that went all the way through -- not just a salt crust on the outside that fools you on the first bite. The toasted bun held everything together start to finish, which sounds like a low bar until you've had a $20 burger collapse into your lap. The bacon had a genuine snap to it, the cheese melted into every layer, and the produce was clearly cut that morning. You can tell the difference. The fries are a full portion and they stay crispy long enough to actually eat them. Service moved fast for a kitchen cooking everything to order. The room has that no-nonsense burger joint feel -- you're there for the food, and the bar-and-grill setup makes it easy to linger if you want to. Clayton location is convenient, parking is straightforward, and the price-to-portion ratio is better than most places charging the same or more for half the effort. The name is not a lie - the burgers are really five star. I ordered the five star burger and the patty was flavored SO well. Just the perfect amount of salt and pepper to bring out the flavor of the beef without being overpowering. The pickle chips were deliciousssss and the perfect thickness for a burger. The burger prices listed are just for the burger, fries are extra and worth it. When I first saw the fries I thought they would be generic fries, but they are so perfectly crispy and salted. I got a speakeasy to drink and a mint chocolate chip ice cream shooter to finish, and both were delicious. I love that they sell the $1 ice cream shooters, which are just a small scoop of ice cream in a small cone. It was the perfect lil nightcap (nonalcoholic) to end the evening. I was full so I wouldn't have wanted a full dessert, but the ice cream shooter hit the spot. The service was great. I sat outside and was checked on several times by my waitress to ensure that I had everything I needed. The food came out quick. There is plenty of seating. There's paid parking right in front of the restaurant, and free parking in the neighborhood around the corner if you're willing to walk a very short walk. We recently got takeout from this restaurant. I was really disappointed with my burger. It was supposed to come with onion rings and bbq sauce on it. Well, they forgot the bbq sauce, and for the onion ring they chose the smallest slice that was hardly larger than a quarter. It's been almost ten years since my last review, so it is time for an update. Damn, these burgers are the boom. I absolutely love them. My hairstylist now works a few doors down, from 5 Star Burgers and that may be my demise of my diet. How am I going to resist stopping in for a quick lunch each time I get my hair-cut? My burger was thick, juicy and the perfect treat before seeing my stylist. I was dining alone, so I had a hard time choosing my side. Normally, when I am with a friend, one of us gets fries and the other picks onion rings. That way, we both get to experience both. Today, I picked a small basket of fries. They were super crisp and I like the little cup of ketchup instead of a bottle. Today, I enjoyed a craft beer with my burger. I liked their variety of selection and was pleased that they offered, Logboat Brewing from Columbia, MO. However, next time I am going to break down and enjoy one of the hand scooped milk shakes. I sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly and attentive. When my food was ready, one of the kitchen workers walked it out to me. That was good team work, as the bartender was out working one of the hightop tables. I am so glad my stylist changed salons, for the simple reason that I get to have lunch here. Went here with my wife and Grandchildren. My wife and I both ordered the burger special of the month which was a half pound hamburger with seasoned green beans and Bulgogi sauce and two egg rolls. It was absolutely delicious. Grandkids enjoyed their hot dogs and chicken fingers. I tried them both and the hot dogs were first rate and the fried chicken (dipped in bulgogi sauce) was to die for!
