I've only been to maybe a couple real "old-skool" diners in St. Louis, and it wasn't until a couple weeks ago I finally went to one of the Courtesy Diner restaurants. Went during dinner time (5-ish) and surprisingly I was the only person there. But as I was leaving, people started coming in. I had the chili mac (the largest; they have two sizes) and an order of fries. Both came out very great. The only thing that was missing was parmesan cheese (didn't know if I had to ask for it...) but they had hot sauce on the table, which made up for it. It was just the cook and the waitress, who were keeping busy while it was dead. Service was great. Would go back to any location. read more

Great place for diner food. I had a western omelet and hash browns that was very good. Sometimes if I'm out on my own running around, I'll stop in and get breakfast or grab a quick burger. I like to sit at the counter when I'm by myself and the service is always friendly and fast. Ambiance is typical diner but it's clean and open allot of hours. (Early/late). Part time I was here I started a review and it was only 3 stars. This time it gets a solid 4. This place would have gotten 5 stars but there was a horrible sewer smell. The food was great though. The waitress was sassy and we loved it. I would have liked my toast hotter but the eggs...OMG these eggs were cooked PERFECTLY!! So many times I order eggs over medium and when they come out they are either sunny side up which is really gross or hard and then I can't mix them with the hashbrowns and meat. My husband and I have normally had good experiences, good food and service. Last week, both our meals came with toast. When the toast was brought to table, it was moldy. Other than having to pay cash, which I now appreciate given the elite globalist push for central bank digital currency, Courtesy Diner has been a favorite of mine for over 25 years. I'm enjoying the Hoosier and French toast right now. Service is always very friendly; the food is delicious, incredibly fast, and the prices are of course, very affordable. I LOVE CD! Tip your servers well! Servers are super friendly, work hard, don't get paid much and they actually deserve a nice tip, unlike most fast food restaurants that started adding tips to their cashier process. If you are looking for tablecloth napkins and a "hi, welcome to courtesy diner, my name is Angelica I'll be your waitress for the evening. May I offer you two something to drink, a coke or orange juice perhaps?" then look elsewhere. If you are expecting a woman with a nametag that says "marge" and comes up to your table saying "what can I get you to drink, honey?" then THIS is the place for you. The food is as it is the same no matter which location you go to. The hours have changed, from what I've learned, where they used to be open 24hrs and are no longer doing that, perhaps because of covid? I don't know. Greasy burgers, greasy eggs, but the fries are surprisingly good! Especially if you ordered them crispy and they actually make it to your table like ordered. I say give it a whirl. I've been going to the Hampton location since I was a child. I've always had a deep love and respect for this place and its staff. However, I visited the Laclede location today and had a very different experience. The tables were all full which was fine with me; I was planning on ordering Togo. I was hoping to have a cup of coffee while I waited so I sat at the bar. I ordered the coffee and let the staff member know that I wanted to place a Togo order. She rudely dismissed me and said I had to place it at the register. I was alright with that but the way she said it seemed a little over the top. I waited patiently in line for 10 minutes. Once I got to the front another staff member seemed to feel like I didn't need to be acknowledged and allowed a gentleman from the bar top to cut in front of me to pay his bill. A bit confused, I waited even longer. After finally placing my order I sat back down at the bar with my coffee. The older gentleman next to me ordered a coffee and also asked to place a Togo order. He was greeted cheerily and accommodated immediately. When his food was brought to him they offered plastic ware, condiments, and seasonings. My food was placed in front of me without a word. I'm not sure why I was being treated so drastically different from the other patrons. But I felt like trash as I walked out. The food was prepared quickly and was good as always. But I'm sorry to say, I won't be back to the Laclede location. I've been in the restaurant industry for 13 years and I have always treated everyone with respect, no matter their dress, color, creed, orientation, age, or socioeconomic status. For many years I thought the staff at Courtesy served the same way. It's disappointing to see them stoop this low. I hope they can read this post and adjust their attitudes towards younger patrons. read more

I have wanted to visit this place for a long time and I am so glad I did. With its quaint Americana diner look and home town feel, it is the perfect place to stop Day or Night to grab a meal or a snack. Leave your credit cards at home because they're cash only. No need to fear they have an ATM on site that are currency free these days. The menu maybe be simple but the food is purely diner. Burgers, Chicken fried Steak, Chilli, covered everything and Breakfast 24-7. We star5ed off with a St. Louis Original, Toasted Ravioli. Hot, fresh and crispy. For our entrees I had to get the Frito Pie, a throw back to my high school days and since the Price was Right I also tried a single cheeseburger plain. Mom had the Chicken Fried Steak with a side of Sausage Gravy. Everything came out fast and fresh. Food was incredibly delish, Mom said she has never had such a tender Chicken Fried Steak. Stopped by for a quick breakfast. I had a Rodeo Omelette, which has cheese hamburger onions and chili on top. Of course it's nothing without the renowned Courtesy chili, which I love. My daughter was in from college and really want hash browns. What would not be a better place than a Diner. First off, this is a cash only place. Hard to miss the sign on the door and on the register. Also, people gripe about a mandatory 10% gratuity for to-go orders. There are signs all over for that and since the wait staff is also the cook staff is also the bus staff a mere 10% going to them really should not break anyone. The place seemed friendly enough. We could sit where we wanted. There also looked like there were more than a few regulars at the counter. I was hoping it would be a good sign... My daughter ordered her omelet with hash browns, I got my pancakes with eggs. She started with water but after seeing a rather nice cup of hot chocolate go by she ordered one as well. I stayed with the coffee (decent enough). The food came out quickly and soon was devoured. My daughter was very pleased with her hash browns and my pancake/egg combo was perfect. The waitress was attentive enough without being over bearing. Oh, and she was also the register person. The folks who work there really have to be multi-talented! I was wracking my brain the night before the first Post Covid 19 Father's Day about where to eat? St. Louis is lucky to have great restaurants reopening. But service is still spotty and wait times long due to staff shortages. The Courtesy Diner experience is something every StL Native has grown up with. Whether it was trips with family or more likely late night dining after imbibing much alcohol. I wanted to eat at a no frills place. I wanted food which reminded me of my youth. Where else can you find the legendary "St. Louis Slinger"??? My teenaged son loves old diners. We still lament the closing of the historic Steak N Shake in Lemay. Courtesy Diner is a throwback. No drive through. You actually have to go inside and talk to a human. They ONLY take cash. No credit cards (though they do have an ATM inside). No checks (yes, people still use those) and no your Apple Watch and Apple Pay don't mean a damn thing here. The food and menu are classic Americana. Breakfast available 24-7. They have booths where you can sit down. And also lots of space at the long counter, which is where we like to sit. Hey you can actually SEE your food being made! I love that smell of a real burger sizzling on the grill. Not some frozen hockey puck you get from the Golden Mold'n Arches. Shakes can be malted. They have PIE fresh every day. Burritos, Chili, steak sandwiches, real iced tea and coffee. And yes, real people. The burger had the right crispy edges. There was a ton of fries in my side order. They have StL staples like fried okra and chili mac. Anything-and I mean ANYTHING can have a fried egg adorning the top of it. There is a juke box there too, with actual CDs inside. Cash for that also. In fact, you could eat at this place, listen to music, socialize a bit and NEVER have to look at a smart phone or "device" screen! And one thing I promise. You will NEVER leave a Courtesy Diner hungry. I love this newest location just off Watson road. It's got the ghost of route 66 sweetly haunting it's ceramic checkerboard walls. read more

Two main things: Cash only and no pampered service. If you're looking for someone to ask you how you liked your food, come back and have a little chat with you, you're in the wrong place my friend. This is a straight to the point diner where you come in, seat yourself, someone will bring you the menu then a waitress will follow to take your order, someone or the waitress will bring your order to your table along with the check. You can then proceed to enjoy your meal and when you're done, you get yourself up and pay at the counter. But don't forget to tip your waitress! This has been on my list to try and finally got to on Monday for breakfast... well, more like brunch really or a really late breakfast, whichever you prefer. I ordered the omelette with some sliced jalapenos, hamburger, cheese and then topped with chili. I can't recall the proper name but it was a well-portioned omelette though on the bland side. I was hoping the chili would have quite a bit of flavor but it didn't and I had to salt and pepper it immediately after my first bite. The omelette was filled quite nicely though which I appreciate. The place is fairly small. There aren't too many booths but they do have a lot of stools at the diner bar. They keep things clean, the cook makes your food where you can see them and the waitress are quite attentive with drink refills. I was halfway through my first cup of coffee when she offered me more and that gets a seal of approval from me. The prices are very reasonable. My omelette was only slightly over $6. Not sure where else I can get a breakfast that cheap... certainly not where I normally go to as those places usually run me about $12-16 for breakfast before the tip! Would I come back here again soon? Perhaps, if I actually remember to bring cash with me. This is a big problem for me since I generally don't carry cash 97% of the time but I do hope to wander in here some other time. read more
