After living here in downtown Grand Rapids for 4 years, I can honestly say The Grove is my favorite restaurant in the midwest. The place is beautiful, modern, and has a touch of that elegant vibe. The restaurant seats about 80, so I would recommend calling ahead for reservations. However, if find yourself being a little spontaneous, you can always put your name down and enjoy a glass of wine at the bar, also brewery vivant is right next door. Service is consistently great. Waitresses are very attentive and very friendly. While the atmosphere is very classy, there's absolutely no hint of any pretentious attitude. Food- amazing. Everything is just so fresh. It tastes like all the ingredients are hand picked from a garden out in the back. I personally always go with the Taste of Grove- you get to pick an item from each of the three courses. There's a wide variety of items per course, so you can really go with that you like... honestly you can't really go wrong. Price is very reasonable as well. 38 dollars for the 3 course meal, and you'll feel satisfied at the end. There's no point on writing what i ordered because they change up their menu with the season. Anyone that gives this less than 5 stars is crazy. Grove is ah-may-ZING! They have special food that is made with love and you can tell a lot of attention has gone into the mix of flavors and presentation as well as getting everything local and farm fresh. I had the pleasure of dining there with a girlfriend and we ordered 3 courses and shared everything. Some plates were definitely better than others, as it goes, but everything was truly delightful. The worst plates were 5 stars and the best plates were 7s or 8s! Our sea salt dark chocolate mousse dessert was worthy of jumping out of our seats and hugging our waiter! After my meal, a few weeks later, I had the random pleasure of meeting the owners and they were delightful as well. We had a long chat and you can tell that they just had so much passion and love for their craft! They were so open and honest about the place and wanted good feedback as much as bad. Anyone that has that much devotion to food and service should have success; I truly hope that Grove finds it's way into the hearts of GR diners. First visit was Restaurant Week. Can honestly say I've NEVER had food and service so good in all my life. It is one of the most exquisite culinary experiences I've ever had. My new fave in GR. Oh, I will be back...with many friends! Jambalaya- most amazing. Heirloom tomato salad - a true surprise and delight. Steak tar tar - divinity. Quail - culinary genius. Absolutely floored. This place is perfect. For my birthday trip to Grand Rapids, I wanted to find someone I had never been for my birthday dinner. I searched for Farm to Table, and Grove had the highest reviews. I was able to schedule a reservation by phone for 7 guests, and everything about this place is amazing. Sometimes you can go to a "higher end" restaurant and not feel like you're getting the full package- good food, good service, good drinks, etc. This place is ALL of those things. Their "pick 3" option was a genius idea and allowed everyone to try a little bit of a few things. Don't worry everything is amazing, so you can't go wrong. Since it was my birthday, they had a little birthday card for me, and I received a free dessert, with lit candle and everything. A very sweet touch. Trendy, new, aspiring menu, and lousy experience. Took my wife here for her birthday. Reviews were stellar. We were met with a tsunami of noise which only lessened a bit once we were seated away from the bar. Drinks were OK. First course disappointed us both. She ordered cabbage tempura. Mistake. It was so loaded with breading as to make it unpleasant to eat and the cabbage was hard inside. Not much flavor either. She finished less than half. I ordered "individual pies." I asked the server if that was like ravioli or pierogi. He said yes. Both he and the menu failed to mention that these were deep fried, with a batter that was way, way, way too thick. Hid most of the flavors that were inside. And the "salad" that it was stacked on was loaded with cheap ingredients, cabbage and carrots. None too appetizing nor tantalizing. I finished half before giving up. She had a rabbit pasta dish for entree. Amazed at how little rabbit there was. Flavor OK, but nothing special. I had lamb "t-bones." 2 very small blade chops, the cheapest cut of the lamb. Both were tough, one was rare the other medium rare; I had asked for medium rare. Both were tough and sinewy, so much so that I only got about 5 small bites from the entire dish. Again, "salad" of way too much cabbage, carrots, and, this time, tasteless beets. Trying to be creative without the talent or ingredients to pull it off is a joke. We have had many wonderful birthday dinners at the many downtown GR restaurants that were way less trendy, but much better crafted food. Now, the place was busy, which only goes to show you can fool a lot of people a lot of the time. Trendy for sure, but lousy execution and terrible value.. I think the only way to sum up my thoughts on this place are that it is everything that I enjoy about so many good restaurants all wrapped up into one. A lot of places hit the mark on a few things but have a hard time checking the box on all. This is the place that finally brings them all together for me. The atmosphere, the service, the menu options, the portion size, the creativity in their dishes, the wine list, the prices...all without the uppity attitude. We chose this place as it was rated #1 for the last three years by Grand Rapids Magazine, and I can see why. Unparalleled Service!!!!! 5 stars for the service and food quality. Many fresh local ingredients. I travel like crazy and this place was a real treat. You would expect to find such a great place like this in a big city like G.R. but, not at the level of delivery on the service. The food selection is massive and I feel terrible for the kitchen staff... not really... but they have a lot of prep to do I'm sure. Very modern clean feel. My only complaint would be that in the 20 different dishes my small group of 4 tried, quite a few of them were spicy when not described so and also too salty. I personally enjoyed everything and can tolerate a lot of spice. My grandparents on the other hand were not impressed. It was a bummer for me to take them out to their first top notch dining experience and not have them leave truly impressed. I spent 275+ without ordering many drinks and hoped I would taste something that was extremely memorable. This a fine dining establishment who truly knows food no doubt. My main issue with Grove is that I wish the tasting menu included 9 choices, not only 3. I swear I could have picked out 20 items that sounded absolutely delicious! I had the maple braised beef, quail, and seared tuna. The plates were beautiful and everything was great, although if I wanted to get all Tom Collichio, elimination table on them, I might say that each course was a bit heavy-handed with the salt. My first return to the Grove in a couple years. The years have not been kind. The decline in quality started when I walked in, greeted with "May I help you" as if I was intruding on something rather than "Welcome" or "Table for one" or simply "Hello". As I was alone and it was a Tuesday, I had not made a reservation, figuring I would just sit at the bar. Which I did. Very limited menu, which is fine--focus on quality. I ordered a squash soup appetizer and trout for the entree. As another reviewer noted on their visit, the soup had an overpowering base, perhaps lamb, that dominated. The trout was perfectly done but was served whole and there was no offer to debone. Of course, I can do that but, really, should I have to? Came in on my own on a Tuesday night after a friend decided that since I was traveling by myself for work that I should treat myself to a fabulous dinner. If I lived in the area, this would be my go-to place. Hands down, one of the best meals I have ever had, and I would go so far as to place it in my top 5 meals of all time. The menu here is kind of enormous. If you're going for a tasting, that is fantastic but it's not like other places where I've had a tasting menu. Those places normally have a few set items to choose from and you can't mix and match. Not at Grove. Each course had at least 10 items to choose from. And if you wanted to double down from each section? Say two from section 1 and 1 from section 3? Sure, no problem. Also? $30ish for 3 courses? This is a steal. I had to start with the cheese plate. It is an extra $10 and meant to be shared as the portions are quite enormous but it is well worth it. Even if you are just one person. There are three cheeses - mine were a blue, and then I believe a Cheshire from Zingermans and a gouda. All three were fantastic and came with a different accompaniment, or a relish, like the apple slaw that came with the gouda. Very delicious! After a lot of perusing, I decided I was not going to make it through the evening without the shrimp and grits. Now, at that point, I had never had shrimp and grits before but this dish made me want to have this again and again. For some folks, this may have been a little on the salty side but for me, it was just right. The shrimp were well cooked and the grits were not overly thick. There was a just lightly spicy green sauce on the side and it gave the whole thing a wee bit of a kick. It was so good that I would drive the almost 4 hours for that alone. After the shrimp and grits came the butternut squash soup. It's a lot different here than I have had it elsewhere. Most of the time, it takes on the flavor of whatever other vegetables are mixed in. Grove's butternut squash soup was very sweet - sweet enough that I could almost call it dessert. It was just fantastic! For my entree, I had arctic char that came with some roasted vegetables. The highpoint of a dining experience I had a couple of years ago was when I ordered a piece of fish and when it came out, the skin was so perfectly charred and crisped, it tasted like a roasted marshmallow. And I should probably also say that I normally don't love the skin on my fish. This arctic char was not only perfectly cooked from the standpoint of the fish but the skin had achieved that marshmallow crispness. It was amazing to the point that I actually wanted to eat the skin first! The vegetables were definitely a supporting actor in this dish, though I don't think prior to this meal, I had ever had cooked radishes before and they were quite nice. And last, just when I thought I could not eat another bite, I had dessert. Salted dark chocolate fudge. Oh. My. This was maybe the smallest portion of the evening but it didn't need to be any larger - it packed a huge punch. Thick and sweet and heavy with that hint of salt... I still am dreaming about this dessert a week later! The service is really good - I am not a fan of having someone hovering in my face while I am eating and the woman who took care of me was there exactly when she needed to be. That is something that I always like, and I am impressed when the restaurant is as busy as Grove was when I was there. She also had an excellent beer selection for me that I ended up liking a lot - the Solitude from Brewery Vivant, which happens to be right across the parking lot from Grove. Very comfortable interior, though I wish they didn't have the TVs that are in the bar area, but nice nonetheless. Very contemporary and the noise level is still fairly moderate for the openness of the room. Make a reservation because I bet it will be plenty crowded. And then enjoy! read more

Everything was just beautiful and whimsical from the decor down to the food. We took my mom here for her birthday due to the yelp reviews, and this place did not disappoint. The food was beautiful, and it was tasty. We each did a 3 course. And that was $42 per person, with some entrees adding a dollar or two. It's a fancy place so we didn't mind splurging a bit. It was fun to try something new and different. The restaurant is a bit tight. Definitely not a place for kids, but the wait staff were all very good at accomadating us and I did very much appreciate that. Our server was attentive even though the restaurant was busy. My spouse and I visited Grove for the first time with another couple during Restaurant Week. Grove offers their full menu (which changes frequently), allowing diners to choose any first course, entree, and dessert for $28. Because most other restaurants offer a limited or special menu for the Restaurant Week price, I think Grove is an exceptional value. It's like getting the first course and the dessert for free. I like that Grove is small, without feeling cramped. The food was amazing. Fresh, innovative without being weird, and flavorful without being overwhelming. The prices put Grove in the "special occasion" category, but I could see future visits for a first course along with wine or a cocktail. The wine list is excellent, also a highlight. read more

This place gets 5 stars because of the amazing value of the tasting menu and the freshness and seasonal use of local food. This is the second time we have dined at the grove and each time I was impressed. Each of us ordered a tasting menu for 35 dollars for 3 courses and some craft cocktails. Was impressed with most everything we had. I loved the fall menu a bit more than the winter menu, but that is just because I am a fan of fall vegetables more so than winter ones....you can only do so much with radish, carrots, etc. But they were creative to say the least. We both enjoyed the sturgeon dish and the skate cheek and chips dishes. Liked the chicken liver pate, but didn't like the way it was served. Already spread very thinly onto toast and topped with shaved seasonal vegetable. It was just okay. Rather be able to spread my own pate and have more of a fresh bread available with condiments on the side for us to add. Also had an apple salad that was great, but would of like more of the smoked goat cheese that was with the dish. Was a little too skimpy on that part. The dessert was good, ordered the lemon buttermilk cake. It was great. Really my favorite was the short ribs with warm with bean puree. It really was amazing. Had all the right flavors paired with great textures. Service here was great...as usual. They are eager to please and extremely accommodating. Can't wait to taste their spring and summer menu! Our third and best visit yet. The new three course tasting menu option worked great for all of us and was just the right .amount of great food. I started with the Bahn Mi, a really interesting combination of flavors. My second course was the Seafood Stew. A nice assortment of fish and shellfish in a very fresh, slightly creamy tomato broth. Just what I was looking for. My final course was the Duck, prepared just as I ordered (medium rare). The best part was dessert. I opted for the Butterscotch Pudding. Had a really nice dinner here last night. I concur with most everyone else, the 3 course Taste of Grove special is a really good idea. You get to sample each section of the menu and despite what some other reviewers thought, I found the portions to be more than ample I started with the ginger spaetzle with fried chicken livers. I am not a huge liver fan but this dish was good. Very savory and well flavored. I could have done with more ginger, but ah well Husband had the ham hock tacos which were delicious We both followed with the tomato salad. It featured a nice selection of extremely fresh tomatoes. They kept it very simple, which I like. When the ingredients are that fresh, they stand alone quite well. I finished with the green chili brisket. I really liked this dish too. The chili was subtle and provided a good amount of heat, but didn't overpower the dish. I could have stood a bit more chili but it didn't take away from the dish. I didn't get why the green and yellow beans were there. They didn't help the dish at all. Husband finished with the crispy pork loin which he really liked. I thought it was a touch mild in flavor for me Drinks were top notch too, especially the lavender orange collins. Service was attentive without being too much. We had a delay with our third course and the restaurant offered us coffee or desert to make up for it. We were both too stuffed for anything more so they took a bit off our bill. I really appreciate the effort to atone for what was a pretty small wrinkle in an otherwise really good meal. I would definitely come here again. Grove is excellent. They have a $30 three course meal that is perfect to get a sample of the menu items. Went there recently and had to go back within a few days. Great atmoshphere, great wine, great service. All in all this is one of the top places in Grand Rapids. For a little more than $100 including tip, you can feed two people, get a good bottle of wine and have a great evening. Parking can be a bit of a challeng in the area with all the new restaurants and bars there but not impossible and well worth the walk if you need to park a block or two away. read more

Decided to stop by this restaurant on a Saturday night and it was a fun experience. The food was really good. The portions are not very big, but you will definitely not be left disappointed or hungry. The food has a lot of flavor and all the ingredients in the dishes I had complemented each other very well. If you go there it is definitely best to do the three course meal for $33. You get more bang for your buck that way. Our waiter was also really nice and very helpful. He was also very knowledgeable about the menu and gave us some good tips on what to order. The prices are not bad either. It is not very expensive. If this restaurant was located in a major city the price for the food would probably be double or triple at what it is priced now. What really makes this place 5 star is the service and food! Portion and quality for each dish perfect and of course it is great to look at. Went to Grove with my parents, wife, and brother for our anniversaries which are one day apart and had an amazing experience. I made reservations well in advance for our party of five, and was asked if the dinner was celebrating anything to which I shared that it was for two anniversaries. We arrived to Grove and as we were being seated the hostess wished us a happy anniversary and put two hand written/decorated congratulations cards down on the table for us! Impressive attention to detail that continued through the entire meal. The food and drinks were delicious, tried the Dizzy Bird and a smoky cocktail, and four of the five of us went with the "Taste of Grove" option which includes three dishes each. Two of us ordered from the vegetarian menu and two from the regular menu, and everything was delicious. I really loved the three options I went with: compressed watermelon salad, beef heart pasta and smoked rabbit main entree, but all of us agreed that the food was very tasty. Food service was a bit slow, although filling up of water and attention to the table was spot on. Grove was even generous enough to share a complimentary toast with the five of us plus the butterscotch pudding dessert! The delay in food was likely attributable to a very large (~20) group arriving about an hour after our party did, keeping the kitchen occupied with preparations. Recommend Grove with no hesitation to anyone in Grand Rapids looking for an upscale casual restaurant with great food and great prices for a fine dining experience. read more

Excellent service and atmosphere, though a bit crowded. Very good food although almost over the top on the farm to forkedness. For example - instead of calling the meat strip pork belly, the menu had them listed as lardons. And the salted dark chocolate fudge described the burnt toast in the middle of the nice tasting chocolate as "Brown butter dipped field & fire brioche" :-) I also found the beer selection a bit limited in it's range - not sure if that was due to having only Michigan beers or just decided to keep it limited in selection. Now this...this is a restaurant! I wish I could pay them to feed me once a week. The menu, always changing because the ingredients are always changing, is a serial novel for the culinary nerd. When they post the Sunday tasting menu on Facebook, I pore over it with no less excitement than a Victorian-era Londoner with the latest Dickens installment: "Ooo...I wonder what will happen to the Creswick pork this week!" The amuse bouche that evening was "chips and dip," a tasty little crisp with a dollop of whipped-up goodness made with cheese from Zingerman's Creamery. We began with the pork belly banh mi, which won by dint of its name's promise, but was surprisingly my least favorite part of the meal. Also, there was a trout appetizer reminiscent of a bruschetta. My visit was before spring vegetables had been harvested, so the menu was oriented toward root vegetables and their ilk, ingredients I ordinarily find as tempting as a punch in the face. The pot au feu had lamb and pork shoulder and a mustard sauce in addition to the sunchokes, turnips, and potatoes, though, so I ordered it in spite of myself. It reminded me that just about anything can taste good when prepared well (except sweet potatoes. Gah. Vile weeds). I found myself actively enjoying the subtle contrasts in texture and taste from one root to the next, all woven together with that mustard sauce I had to stop myself from lapping out of the bowl afterward. Dessert was a chocolate pot de creme accompanied by almond brittle. You know how, in yogurt commercials, a middle-aged housewife in workout clothes leans back with one foot on the wall and a spoonful of Yoplait? She practically fellates the spoon and by the look on her face appears to be experiencing some pleasure of her own, and you're like, "Lady. Chill. It's yogurt." I WAS that lady when I ate this custardy goodness. I got about halfway through my portion, in ecstasy, only to be deflated with the thought that, "Crap. This is going to be over soon." I am not ashamed to admit that I abandoned the restraint exercised with the entree and licked my ramekin clean. I highly recommend this place with one caveat: the conversation you have with your dining companion(s), even if kept to a reasonable volume, will be heard with perfect clarity by your dining neighbors. You are seriously up close and personal with strangers. I think it's kind of fun keeping a surreptitious eye on eavesdroppers to see if you can evoke a snort or a look of horror, but I'm weird like that. read more

Grove is definitely an acquired taste. We made a reservation, but it didn't look like we needed one. The service was okay, but I did find myself looking around for the waiter so that we could order our meals. The lobster hush puppies, the one thing my fiancé was super excited for, had no lobster taste whatsoever. He loved the bison meatloaf, but my fish and "chips" was pretty disappointing. I would go back to try something else, and be super specific about what I didn't want on the plate since the sauces aren't on the side or anything. This restaurant is a cherry on Cherry St. A true farm to table restaurant with a menu that changes daily. Want to experience great eating get the three course meal for $33! While the protein portion will be half of what you'd get normally you will not leave hungry. Try the Harira soup. It's spicy and reminds one of tasting chili but with a smooth creamy texture and with wonderful fresh vegetables within! It sated my appetite! I had the S&S Lamb or sliced lamb on a bed of quinoa with vegetables surrounding it and a nice savory sauce. Mmmm. Very good. Finished the night with butterscotch pudding accompanied by a melt in your mouth butter cookie and pour over coffee which was perfect! Food tasted great- rib eye was cooked perfectly, steak tartare was clean and tasty, however, i would prefer a raw or slightly cooked egg (instead of hard boiled) on my tartar as is customary. Holy shiitake just go there ... make a reservation and go!!! Gin and tonic ... delicious. Pasta hand made. The proteins perfectly cooked. Service outstanding. What a great dining experience. We didn't have reservations, so we went early (5:15pm) and were really glad we did. We were immediately able to get one of the few high top tables in the bar which worked perfectly for us. Within 15 minutes of being there, every seat in the house was filled. Because of the nature of the dining experience as well as the limited seating in both the bar and the dining room, it's pretty easy to see why reservations are good to have and also tough to come by if you expect to get something last minute. I think a majority of tables only would turn once or twice during an entire evening. We got the 3 course tasting menu. Everything was amazingly prepared and balanced in flavor and texture. The only dish that I wasn't particularly wild about was the Jambalaya - I just didn't care for the amount of cumin used because it made too much of a departure from a real authentic Jambalaya (but that might just be my previous experience and taste). The thing really worth mentioning is the wine list and the meal pairing option. I cannot recommend this highly enough. Our server knew the dishes well and paired each dish with a great wine that would truly compliment the dish - not just something pleasant to 'wash it down' but rather a wine that really brought out certain elements of each dish. This was particularly appreciated in some of the dishes that were more delicate and subtle in flavors that became much more perceptible when paired well. Can't recommend this place highly enough.
