Absolutely love this place! The type of bar I can only wish was available in Eden Prairie. Beer selection is great, locals, microbrews and the big breweries all represented. Food is awesome! I have been twice before concerts when they have the "Stadium Menu" which is good (avoid the stadium nachos). Build a #$*&! burger is on the stadium menu as are the chicken fingers and dummies, so small/quick menu for game days. Where Grumpy's really shines is on your regular any-day of the week menu. Poutine, burgers and more. I shared the poutine as a appetizer, had the hot pastrami sandwich and my gal had the Rachel. Excellent food, huge portions, we took leftovers home. I cannot recommend a better place if you are looking for that dark, "hole in the wall" with excellent service, cool atmosphere, great prices, multiple beer and drink selection and wonderful food! With a wide cast of characters, great beer selection, cheap drinks, and the best frozen pizza you've ever had, what's not to love? It's hard for me to put into words why I love this bar so much, but it has to do with its complete lack of pretension; Grumpy's isn't trying to be anything other than exactly what it is--a friendly neighborhood bar with a great beer list where all are welcome. If you're looking for table service, be aware that the server only works when the place gets pretty busy, usually after 9 on the weekends. Most of the decor looks like it's been there since the 70's, but in a good way that feels comfortable. I recommend going on a Monday, since all Minnesota beers are half price (this is all day Monday, not just happy hour). If you're looking for food (and for some reason don't want Heggies, which is truly the highest quality frozen pizza I've ever had), try Stanley's or Marina up the street. read more

I have been here a number of times, but have not taken the time to actually review it. Shame on me!! Generally I do not come here looking to fill a void in my empty tummy, so I am not sure how the food really is. (Hence the 4 stars. I can't give it 5 if I have not eaten.) However, the point of this review is that there is great beer and atmosphere! They always have a great tap selection for those of us beer snobs! Also, if you are feeling like a water, or you fill up on the plentiful beer, they always have great deals on cheap beer! You can go here wearing whatever you want, as long as it covers you up. It is a great dive bar! They have a fantastic patio that is completely secluded from the street. They often have live music to keep the party going. My favorite time to go here, which is only once per year, is the post-Autumn Brew Review brewers party. They have a privately catered party on the grass. Great selection of beer! Go during the week when you can be served by the old school bartenders. Don't go on the weekend when the hipsters rule. I love when beers have their tap parties here (sometimes at like 3 or 4 pm) cause you get to hang out with the neighborhood folks and it tuly feels like a quaint dive bar. I know quaint isn't the right word, but that's how it feels to me - quaint. I come here with my neighborhood friends every once in a while and always have a good time. Tiny place. Kind of confused as to why everybody seems to love this place. Is it a hipster thing? Definitely felt like a hipster place which is so at odds with the Grumpy's I knew growing up which was like a local TGI Fridays with cheaper decor. This place looks the same but as someone completely un-hipster like I felt quite out of place.....like Paris Hilton in a sea of Brooklyn baristas. A decent large dive bar with lots of outside (parking lot style) seating and indoor seating, a karaoke room (used to be smoking room), decent to good beer selection and full bar. The food is straight up bar and average for one. Hipsters, locals, and metrodomers come here to give the place a little variety. Service is good and the servers are genuinely nice people. This place is such a dive bar but in the best way! I compared it to the bar in the TV show Shameless because it seems to be mostly an older crowd who seem to know each other (or maybe that's just what it looked like to me). My friend and I went (both 21) and our ID's got looked at for a long time, so I'm guessing not a lot of the younger crowd come by lol. I got a spicy Bloody Mary and she went heavy on the spice! It was great! Also darts is only like a dollar so that's really fun. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to go to a lower key bar. read more

i realize i just lied when i said that club jager would be my local if i lived here, cause i would live near grumpys, if not in it. even if jager were in this hood, which i had never really been around too much before (but if i do come back, NE will be my hood foo shozies), i would still go to grumpys. there was one major problem- that i shared with my yelp trivia table- sorry andy for the fast introduction to my neurosis regarding public toilets- it is quite simply the location, design and structure of the womans bathroom. if anyone wants a more in depth description of this, just ask. the rest of it compensated for this (as well as my ability to sit sideways on a toilet to block any possible door openings due to possible faulty locks with my leg). from the big ass beer selection (which i dont really ever need due to pbr being the best and for 2 bucksies). they did have a good wine selection, and i have an image of this place being cozy with red wine on trivia night with the delightful trivia woman in the winter (though hopefully she can come up with some less morbid trivia categories- "death"????). its not a huge place, so if you want a booth, get there early. decent patio area. the pizza was tasty too. good people. good times. read more

I really do love this place. I had only ever been to the downtown location because the old Coon Rapids one was too far away and the current Roseville one used to be a Lido's when I was a kid. I always forget about the NE location. The trivia nights that we yelpers have been having on Wednesdays are great, the $2 PBRs cannot be beat within the city limits, and the patio area out back is a little urban haven. I love a bar that can provide a haven for us outdoor enthusiasts and smokers instead of a shivery sidewalk. The waitstaff is always friendly and although I have not eaten there, the pizza my table-mates got a couple weeks ago looked and smelled like the stuff of dive-bar legend. I only docked one star because it fills up so quickly that if you get there later in the evening you have to hover and wait for a table, which I hate doing. read more

We like Grumpy's. We aren't sure what it is .. maybe the divey bar feel but really not that divey as others, the sweet little dog friendly patio out back, the fire they stoke out there on colder evenings, the many many options on tap, the really decent prices, awesome happy hour specials, close to home... the list goes on. We have yet to have a bad night here. I have had a couple encounters with staff that make me not give Grumpy's a 5 star. On two totally separate occasions we've had not so friendly server/bartender. That said, the service is fast, the drinks are strong, and Grumpy's is a fun place to be. It's also really close to the other NE bars. Gotta love it. read more

This is indeed a great dive bar -- totally welcoming, totally unpretentious, with all you ever want from a bar -- broad and deep beer selection, with enough variety to keep it interesting and get you trying new things, and enough old stand-byes to know that you'll be able to get something you like. The patio is great--right mix of shade and sun. Wednesday night trivia is my favorite trivia night; the categories are creative, it doesn't take forever to read and score the questions, and they are generous with the drink ticket prizes. This is all around just a fun, casual, place to hang-out with your friends, especially in the summer. The location in Northeast is excellent and an easy walk to other bars/restaurants. Sometimes the bartenders leave something to be desired - but hey, it's called Grumpy's, what do you expect? This particular Grumpy's location is arguably the best (as originals so often are) and while I wish they had more than Heggie's pizza available, they have plenty of other things to offer a gal like myself: darts, plenty of beer on tap, the small, grungy, and divey vibe I prefer when I'm drinking, and a nice little (smoking-friendly) patio out back. This place was fine. It was an excellent upgrade from 22nd Ave Station (which we only ended up at because Grumpys was at capacity and it was cold). I'd probably give it 3 stars if I had not been at the double duece beforehand. My favorite NE bar, perhaps even my favorite Mpls bar since it's a hop and a skip down the block. The atmosphere is just right: casual with a hint of eclectic and not really divey I have to say. The music selection on the jukebox ensures quality control and they have great beers on tap. Yes, they have tallboys of the usual suspects for $3.50 (Old Style, PBR, etc), but I stopped getting those once I found out that the Brooklyn Lager tallboys are the same amount. The bartenders are solid and I've ended up having good random interactions with other patrons of all sorts. For smokers there's a fire pit out back too that may or may not be in use. read more

It's not really a dive bar as people like to say. A dive bar doesn't have this kind of top-notch spirit and beer selection, nor do they play punk rock songs this awesome, nor does it have this kind of uniquely cool Minneapolis decor full of rad kitsch. Nope, dive bars have Windsor with your other option being Bellows, they play the sound of peoples dreams drowning in $2 beers, and are decorated with old AA chips and dust-covered plastic 3rd place trophies from a golf team they sponsored in 1983. Nope, Grumpy's NE is just an absolutely fantastic local NE bar. All of the Grumpy's are good in their individual ways, and I really like the downtown one as well, but NE is my favorite. These guys like their bourbon, love their scotch and they worship their beer. Tony and Pat are super cool behind the bar and the clientele is a great mix of casual hipsters, neighborhood locals, worker bees, old Am Rep band guys and retired Warner Brothers cartoon characters....ok...not the last one, but, still, there are some serious characters in this place. I've had a few drinks in Grumpy's over the last year or so, and every time I'm in the hood I have to stress about which great bar to drink at down here and Grumpy's and Sample Room usually win (sometimes Dusty's and sometimes Psycho Suzies do too). I'll be back very soon to deplete their scotch selection and take a foggy thirty dollar cab ride back to my mundane suburban home in Pleasantville. Great local dive to get a few drinks if you get there at the right time. Often there are no seats (if that's what you want) patio room is nice with good weather. But more often than not the bar tenders are too busy talking to friends to help you get a drink. So a tip, strike up a convo right away and they will stay around your area. read more

By now, you all know how much I love a good neighborhood bar. I am going to have to add Grumpy's to my list of favorites around town after this week. I went to meet some folks for trivia, but they weren't there. (*ahem*) I stood by the door for a few minutes, trying to make some calls to get other folks to head over. No luck. A table near me had an open chair and a lack of insight on obscure African American sitcoms. Lucky for me, I happen to love a good episode of Girlfriends or Living Single, so they invited me to join them. Such nice folks. It could have been an incredibly uncomfortable evening, but it turned out to be a blast! They were so nice, as were the other teams near us. They bet me that I couldn't get the waitress to tell me what they had on draft because she apparently hates that question. Not only did she tell me, I scored a Founder's Breakfast Stout out of it. Great tap selections (in addition to the tall boys that other folks have mentioned). The boy came to meet me after trivia and we stayed a little longer than we should have on a school night. We were just having too much fun to leave. Can't wait to go back! read more
