Food is bland and inconsistent. A hard biscuit and gravy one day, stale and inedible hash browns the next. You never know what you will get. I asked why they didn't put salt on anything and they told me the owners are allergic. How anyone can run a restaurant while allergic to basic seasonings is beyond me. Service is usually mediocre to terrible, depending on how busy and who is staffed that day. Servers tend to be short and rude. Living up to the restaurants name, grumpy... however I don't blame them because i know for a fact the owners don't pay well and overwork their employees. I also know for a fact that the owners dip their grubby fingers into the tip jar and take a share of the tips meant for their workers, they also take a share of the credit card tips and put the taxes on their employees check. Ambiance is always frazzled as if they were a large restaurant bustling with people and servers unable to keep up with demand, despite the fact there are only 8-9 tables jammed into a tiny tacky restaurant plastered with tasteless decor and still sporting last years Christmas decorations in the middle of April. If you decide to go I suggest you buy the coffee and brownies at the front desk because the brownie comes from a Ghirardelli box and has nothing to do with grumpy's lack luster culinary nightmare. I hope they fail and make way for a cafe who will actually capitalize on the location. We need a good breakfast place around here that treats its customers with respect and dignity. read more

The food reviews didn't look the best, so my friend and i just ordered hash browns. It took 40 minutes for someone to bring "left over hash browns to snack on until the fresh ones are made". At that point we said forget it we'll just take the check. 20 minutes AFTER asking for it, we find out you have to walk up to pay. While standing in line, the man yelled at the cook and spoke with upmost disrespect. The coffee is burnt. My family was not impressed with their eggs beni. This place is a NO GO! This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. We sat down and waited for 10 min before I could order a coffee. While we were waiting too long for our food one of the waiters had an anger outburst with the coffee creamers in the waiter station that made everyone in the restaurant feel uncomfortable. The servers were stressed having all 10 tables in the restaurant with people in them and we're not very polite when anyone asked a question. I overheard the adjacent table say they were afraid to ask for ketchup. All of this and more which made it the worst restaurant experience ever. We finally left the restaurant before we got all of the food we ordered and we will never go back. I recommend going to any other restaurant in town. read more

Walked in and was greeted by a literal robot of an old woman. Asked "what do you want?" in a cranky tone, without saying a word beforehand. Never refilled my water, the teenage boy also charged me for a coffee he never gave me. This place joins Ricks Roadhouse as another place that only accepts locals and treats them as human. Do not recommend. Service is abysmal. Owners openly brags about treating people like dirt. I decided to finally go in and try the food regardless of how the owners treat the community. You can get better food at any chain restaurant dumping it out of a frozen bag. This is the only restaurant in Rockaway that I have disliked. My 30th birthday breakfast was AWFUL!!! I ordered the eggs benedict which was the special of the day- also a new menu item. My first came out with eggs fully hard boiled, no good. By the time my remake came out everyone was done eating at my table, and it was burnt with runny egg whites. I was over it at this point, but honestly the worst part was the cooks terrible attitude!! It took the waitress about 5-10 minutes to notice us and when she finally addressed us and we said we had 4 in our party, she grunted and ignored us for quite a bit more time. Then she sat us at a very small table even though some booths were opening up and there were some groups of two waiting behind us. Then it took about 10 minutes just to get water. When we got our food, it wasn't great. Then we went up to pay and got attitude as if we were supposed to wait any longer for her as we didn't even get checked on during our meal. It wasn't the worse thing ever but I would've preferred if it was a girl doing it. I wanted my pancakes to be shaped like Mickey Mouse, but they must be psychopaths there because they said the words, "what's a Mickey Mouse?" and that honestly made my ears bleed. Slow and rude service. The restaurant was 1/2 full and no food was coming out of the kitchen. I asked to have my soup before my burger and was told no. We stopped in, and asked for a table. Off the bat, the woman working there was a bit short but I didn't think much of it. She told us it would be ten minuets and to wait outside. About fifteen minuets passed and my mother went in to check on our table while I stayed outside with my two young children. My mother said she went in to check on the time, just because our baby was getting fussy and we were considering going to another restaurant. She asked my mother how many people were in her group, like she had forgotten about us. My mother had said we were already waiting, and the woman asked for the name of our group - which she hadn't asked us for before. She then told her she didn't know how long the wait would be. My mother came back outside to tell me, and see if we should maybe go somewhere else. The woman in the restaurant then came outside and was raising her voice and being extremely rude to us in front of my young children. My four year old started crying because of the situation. We left at that point and did not eat there, but the customer service was the worst I've experienced. read more

This was my second time going here during COVID. The first time was a positive experience, this time was not for the following reasons: - I called to make an order and was hung up on. When I called back the gentleman working there picked up the phone and left it off the hook while checking a customer out and commented something along the lines of "I don't know what they keep calling, it's not like we are busy or something. They expect me to just pick up the phone. We're busy, go somewhere else". - Unfortunately with Offshore Grill closed, there is no where else. My husband called back, also got hung up on, then no answer. After 6 attempts they did answer and rudely took our order. - When I went to pick up our food the gentleman we spoke to had made an error with our order and I had to wait for our second item. He had a mask on below his lower lip and chin. After signing my credit card receipt I used hand sanitizer and got some on the paper and apologized for this at which point he made a snarky comment about "It's not a problem except that it dissolves the paper" and then indicated I should have used less. in summary: - HORRIBLE customer service. - Very poor to almost non-existent COVID safety/prevention guideline adherence with the server wearing his mask below his lower lip and on his chin and then criticizing the customer for using hand sanitizer. - I will not go back. read more

Horrible service. My husband and I waited to be seated for several minutes before being acknowledged at the door even though the server saw us several times since walking in. It's tiny in there which made that whole experience really awkward. Only two tables being served and already had their food so not sure what all that was about. Service was "fine". Not friendly but not rude. Cleanliness was meh. Found a hair in the maple syrup lid. The food was severely lacking flavor. Waffles and pancakes were hard to cut and rubbery. Biscuits and gravy looked like it was reheated from a can. Coffee was weak and burnt. I honestly don't know how they're in business but possibly because they're open regular hours and people (like us) hope for the best...? Skip this place. So disappointed in this place. First, we had to wait for the tables to be cleaned, then we couldn't get a menu until we called for one. Then we ordered the chowder and turkey sandwich. I know this is personal taste, but I really don't like clam chowder that is so thickened (with what I presume was instant potatoes as it tasted a bit gritty) that your spoon will stand up straight in it. The turkey was processed lunch meat and the sandwich was dry with absolutely no mayonnaise on it, so we had to request that also. We than had to call for the check and a to-go box. Although it's named "Grumpy's", there is no reason the waiters need to be "grumpy". My husband and I have been here twice, and both times our waiters have just been generally rude in treating us like an inconvenience, than a paying customer. Great spot for cafe/diner food along Hwy 101. We arrived 30 minutes prior to closing and had the place to ourselves. Server was great - very friendly and accommodating! I always feel bad when we roll in toward the end of the day but we had service with a smile and a tasty, satisfying meal. I had the BLT - perfectly toasted bread (not soft but not cardboard), and LOTS of thick bacon and lettuce in there. Just how I like it. The rest of the group had the burgers - said they tasted just like what'd you make in a backyard BBQ - satisfying and with all the fixin's. The place has been here a while - and it shows, but it was clean, had good food, and wonderful service, so it's worth another visit! Two egg breakfast with hash browns, bacon, and toast was not very good. Eggs were cooked fine but not at all seasoned. The waitress almost boasted, "we don't season anything" as if that is a good thing. Hash browns were dry and overcooked. Bacon was fine. When is bacon not? Server was friendly but not very attentive and never got us any drink refills. Overall Grumpys left me kind of grumpy and had me wishing we'd gone someplace else for breakfast instead.
