Love the name. Fits my attitude when I'm hungry and can't find a place today. My boyfriend and I were seated at a coffee shop/ restaurant for over a half an hour just a block away and we finally got up and left because they did not know how to run that place. She gave all the tables menu but never came back to take orders....time for an escape plan. We got up and saw the closest breakfast spot that was open was Grumpy's and off we went. They were slammed but we could smell the good food cooking and people were getting their breakfasts and were eating. Great sign that we would get some breakfast too. Biscuits and gravy were my favorite. Just the perfect amount of saltiness in the biscuit and the gravy wasn't too heavy. We got our food in a timely manner considering how busy they were...we were pretty grumpy and hungry when we got there but left feeling good! read more

The one star is only for the wonderful servers who work there (also the food is decent). The owner, however, is truly awful and ruined the experience for us and many other customers. She was not only playing loud music in the back to the point people couldn't have a nice conversation over breakfast, but the music being played was full of profanity and lyrics that were highly inappropriate for the children dining there (like the WAP song). Several of the tables of diners became uncomfortable and finally one woman got up to ask a server if the music could turned down. The server returned looking visibly upset and said the response from the owner was "if they don't like the music, they can leave now!" We all just looked at one another in shock. I guess the owner doesn't want our business? Why run a business built on customers and then treat them like that? I overheard one of the children say to their parent, "mom, I saw the owner in the back and she looks like an angry old woman." So I suppose the cafe has the right name, because its run by a grumpy woman who could care less about the customers that keep her business running. I would give negative stars if I could. Where do I start? We waited 15 minutes before we were seated, another 15 minutes before the waitress came over to get our drink order (just water). We told her we already know what we wanted for breakfast but she said she wouldn't take our order because she was only doing our drinks right now. Ok?!? I'm noticing this is happening with other tables as people around us are getting frustrated, one couple who had been there before us left after only getting their coffee. 15 more minutes go by and we flag the slower than molasses waitress over to us and make her take our order. My friend gets an omelette. I get a basic breakfast. 1 egg, 1 bacon, a pancake or toast, and hash browns. Meal comes out and I don't have my pancake. I ask for it and the guy says he will find out what went wrong. He comes back and tells me that I get either a pancake or toast, but I don't have either, so I say that, and ask for my pancake. Then he tells me I either get a pancake or toast or hash browns. I show him the menu and he argued with me the whole time. I ask him to just bring a pancake as we have been waiting over an hour at this point and he says "If I bring you a pancake, I'm going to take your hash browns back!" I'm in shock that he said this and it was in a raised voice and very rude manner and I told him to forget it. By the way, my hash browns were COLD when they came out. There was a couple who had been waiting to be seated at the door for 20 mins who had decided to seat themselves at the table next to us and witnessed the whole ordeal and left in disgust. My friends omelette was a complete raw runny cold egg in the middle. I called the waitress over and told her the omelette was raw. She grabbed the plate and looked at it and says, "It looks done." I told her that it doesn't matter if it looks done to her, she's not the one eating or paying for it. The service was APALLING and unexceptable. The food was disgusting. The facility was filthy. You could hear the staff yelling and complaining in the back. I will not be returning and will never recommend this place to anyone. If I could give this place less than 1 star, I would. read more

This place is truly the opposite of happy. My bf and I decided to drop by this spot on our way back to our beach house. He was being grumpy and I joked that we should go to Grumpy's. This was a mistake even though it started out as a joke. We walked inside and were greeted by two people to sit anywhere we want. Keep in mind that we rolled on by around 1pm (prime lunch hour). Please note that its a bad idea to eat at a place that has more employees who work than the number of patrons eating. I needed a coffee badly before my caffeine headache started. Coffee was watery with little flavor. I suspect they reuse their coffee grounds to save on cost. I ordered the captain's platter and the server asked us if we wanted to split it, we said we'll share. The platter came out on two plates. We get our bill with a $1 charge for splitting it. Ok, no big deal! Only a dollar! We get our food and the plates looked greasy. I know, it's fried food but if you fry anything at a low temp, it comes out greasy and saturated with oil. All the food on the platter appeared to have been put in the fryer all at the same time (fries, halibut, clam strips). Worst meal ever! I went for a takeout meal for a special birthday lunch and ordered a large fish and chips with an extra side of cold slaw. I should have checked it out before I left the restaurant. We went to Grumpy's happy but their slow service, bad food and cold air conditioning blowing on our bad food made us GRUMPY. This was by far one of the worse experience in dining I have ever had, the clam chowder was nothing more than a bowl of thick wall paper paste. Not one clam or potato was ever found in the cup. The bread of my BLT was stale. How can you screw up a BLT? Well if you are a cook at Grumpy's you certainly can. No thanks, I will never go back One other item. maybe you should move the HVAC wall mount so that it does not blow on your customers head, neck, face and plates. read more

Horrible! Very small. If your party is more than 4 you will definitely have trouble. We waited for almost 15 min for our drinks and then at least another 45 min for our food. I showed up around 7am on a Sunday and could pick anywhere I wanted to sit. There was one waitress - she asked if I wanted anything to drink and I said water and coffee both please. The coffee was hot and tasted just as coffee should. I ordered Eggs Benedict - and the reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars was the amount of time I waited. It was about 20 minutes before the food arrived but when it did it was just what I ordered. The hollandaise was perfect and a good amount was on top of my perfectly poached eggs. The ham was thin sliced and while I prefer a thick cut of ham on Benedict it was still tasty. The waitress was attentive and refilled my coffee without me asking. She wasn't "Grumpy" either but she wasn't overly chatty or superfriendly. The food was good - the service was good... just the wait time from order to food being served a bit much. Maybe she had to make up the hollandaise. Still would absolutely recommend this place but know it will be busy on the weekends... Rockaway gets a little crazy on summer weekends. I don't know what others are talking about with their poor reviews. Out of all the breakfast places we've been in Rockaway this is my new favorite. It's no frills, basic food, great for the price. Our waitress was the opposite of grumpy. My son was in a bad mood and she made him laugh and got him to smile. (He's 7) The restaurant was 1/2 full when we walked in around 11:30 and was completely full within 5 minutes. There was only one waitress and she was nice and polite the entire time. The food came out in a timely manner and was hot and tasty. Of the restaurants we've been to this week it was one of the better experiences and it was also the most value oriented. Win-win. Grumpy's lives up to the name. The staff here was very rude and it was disheartening and concerning seeing them be blatantly rude to people of color while being noticeably attentive and kind to the locals around us at the restaurant. We felt as though every question we had was a bother and our waitress gave us a blank stare every time we thanked her. A large group of people came in while we were eating but the staff did not greet them in a timely matter so the group left. As soon as they left, the staff begin to talk loudly about them (very unprofessional). I got a coffee cake that took 20 minutes to prepare and apparently it was because it was "being warmed up" but the cake was cold when I received it. Bad coffee and bad service. read more

A favorite of ours when we are in town. The owner always comes out to say hi to the kids. Very straight forward and tasty food. Came here for dinner last night. Menu is not huge, but a good selection. Kids got the kids burgers - they were really good, daughter got the fried chicken - the batter, whatever it is they use is great, and the chicken was moist, and I have the fish and chips, also good. The best thing though - the fries were amazing - kids loved them, I loved them, clearly made fresh from actual potatoes (imagine that!). Only downside, which I can't really ding them a star for, is that it's not licensed. I came in here a few days ago with my wife and two kids as we were staying across the street. The staff needs help. Maybe more staff members, maybe psychiatric treatment. My food was decent for the price which was about the only saving grace. Patrons in other booths were making comments like, "I think they call this place Grumpy's because of the cook and server" - of course not to the wait staff's faces- because they were arguing a lot. And it seemed that the majority of the people in there were tired of waiting for their food and just didn't want to be there and wish they gone somewhere else. The service was far from great so all these elements combined are what prompted me leave a bad review and encourage others to spend their money somewhere else.
