We walked in and were not greeted for 20 minutes and once we sat down we received our drinks. after reading the fine print this place allows no substitutions to food and has a $1.50 charge for every split bill. A small town cafe with an interesting choice of music. Decorations were unique and added to the experience. Our host and waiter were efficient, present, and kind. My coffee cup was never empty. Our food was hot, fresh, and came out quickly. The price was decent for the amount of food we received and we left full and satisfied. Fun place! Hilarious signs inside that feed on the Grumpy theme. ("Stupidity isn't a handicap. Park elsewhere." "Sorry, yesterday was the deadline for complaints." "Beware of attack waitress.") Really a place with a sense of humor. We did not experience any service issues at all. But we were there on a Friday morning not in high season. Good breakfast with exceptionally generous portions. (In fact, I recommend asking for silver dollar pancakes because each regular pancake is four times the size of a normal one - really.) I will be back as often as I can. read more

We came in on a busy saturday morning at 11am, was told 15 min til seating, got our food at 12:40. Would have liked to know food wait. 2 sets of people behind us got their food before us. When we finally asked when we'd get our food they said "we ran out of hash browns, it's on its way now". My two kids and I ate here when we stayed at Rockaway Beach this week. This place is awesome. The folks were super friendly and made us feel at home. My daughter got the #1 - huge pizza sized pancakes, two eggs, and crispy large bacon. The pancakes with marionberry syrup were to die for. My son got the french toast and loved it. I was boring and got oatmeal - but it was super great (and huge). If we lived around here we'd go back once a week. Best breakfast we've had in ages. We came here during Halloween time and it is completely decked out in animatronics and decorations! This place is so adorable!!!!! I sympathize for this family-owned business during this tough time of COVID, limited staff and still the same amount of visitors coming in daily. My son loved this place so much, that we stopped in twice on our trip to Rockaway Bay. First go, he had pancakes the size of his head and I had a veggie omelet that was quite nice! And if you like crispy hashbrowns, this is your place. We realized while there (probably why the kiddo wanted to go back) that they had fresh donuts and pastries. The apple fritter was inhaled by the boy and he was quite content with leftover pancakes for meals as well! I will say, this place, like so many other family-owned businesses in Rockaway, is struggling. This is an older couple who work 7 days a week. The first visit, they weren't that busy and they were a lovely couple and very attentive to our needs. But you could tell they were tired. The second visit, bless them...they were slammed and only the wife was waiting tables with two folks in the kitchen. I jumped in to help bus some tables, I could see she was out of her element and needed some help...and I was more than happy to jump in. And she was grateful and that's all I needed. Sorry to see the negative reviews...but if you actually get a chance to talk to the couple that runs the place, you'll see their intentions are good and they're trying their hardest to keep their heads above water. Place is packed a lot, as a good buisness should be. I just moved to Oregon, I'm 2300 miles from home but I go to grump every other day. Food is always fantastic, staff is friendly. I've never had a bad time going there. I've seen a lot of reviews saying rude staff but that seems to be just an over exaggeration because everyone I've seen was very nice. Highly recommend. Kind of a little dive breakfast joint, which typically indicates really good food. Breakfast was tasty, I didn't order a pancake but I took a bite of someone else's and it was seriously the best tasting pancake I've ever had! Even more important, we were there with a 3 and 4yr old and had to wait about 1/2 hr to get a seat. At the beginning of our wait, the waitress came outside and gave the kids some cards to play with. When we got inside, she immediately gave them coloring sheets. While waiting for our order to arrive, she stopped by and talked in a Donald Duck voice. It was crazy busy that day and took a while for our food to come, and she came by again and gave blocks to the kids to switch up the distraction for a bit! Waitress was extremely slow waiting on us and even waited on another table that came in after us. I know where the name Grumpy's came from as she was certainly that. One of my requests was filled about the item ordered while the other one was not. Hash browns weren't browned at all, just a warmed up white heap with no flavor. We also had to remind her to bring our drinks. And to finish it off, I didn't get thanked while my friend did(even though I did leave a tip). We waited over an hour for our food from the time we ordered, and while we were waiting, we were only offered refills on our drinks once even though we had empty cups of water, coffee, and soda. My omelette was undercooked and the hash browns were super dry. The best part of my meal was the toast! Had breakfast this morning. Very busy. We were seated, had coffee and menus in 5 minutes. Ordered our food and less than 10 minutes later were eating. Eating in beach towns can be expensive, but not at Grumpy's. They're cheaper than my local breakfast diner. We go here whenever we visit Rockaway. It's the #1 breakfast option for price & quality. It's within walking distance of most places out-of-towners stay. They have huge pancakes, the best sausage links ever, berry syrup, thick & crispy bacon, AND they bake homemade desserts throughout the day. Pies, cookies, cinnamon rolls, apple dumplings & other forbidden deliciousness. Right outside of the restaurant is a small pond with benches. Stuff yourself and then go relax by the pond before you head to the beach. read more

I was a bit leery going in considering there were some low reviews, but we figured we would give it a shot since it was one of the closer breakfast places to where we were staying. The place was in a good location with decent parking options. We were able to park on the street in front of the police station next door. There were booths and tables and the restaurant was cozy without feeling crowded. Service was friendly and accommodating. The servers were friendly and quick. One quick note, someone who worked for or with the restaurant was sitting in the booth behind ours. At least I thought they were affiliated with the place. Anyway, my son was super amped up because he could see the coastal tour train from our booth. He kept talking about wanting to go on the train. The person behind us got up, grabbed a brochure for the train and handed it to my wife saying we might need it. It was a nice gesture. Now for the food. The wife and I ordered the same thing, the biscuits and gravy with meat and eggs. We both enjoyed it. My daughter had the kids french toast and my son had the kids pancakes. If I had a concern, it was that the kids pancakes were way bigger than we anticipated. The menu indicated they were silver dollar pancakes. They were closer to silver platter pancakes, and he barely got through half of one of them. All in all, great food, great service, great prices in a beautiful location. We don't get to the area very often, but the next time we're there and looking for breakfast, Grumpy's will be on the short list. read more

This place is just nothing special. I would spend your time and money somewhere else. You can really tell that they are trying to do things on the cheap. We ordered the biscuits and gravy. The sausage seemed real low quality and the biscuits and gravy seemed as if they were made from a box. I could make better biscuits and gravy at home. It also seemed like it was not the cleanest establishment. My daughter had pancakes and they were burned on the bottom. Or I guess overdone (still edible) but you couldn't cut them with a knife and so I had to break them up to bite sized pieces with my hands. I would try another place, this is not worth the money or the time. It did take quite awhile for the wait staff to take the order and bring the check.
