Located in downtown Kansas City, the Grunauer is an exceptional place to experience authentic German food in the local area! Food and menus options are absolutely wonderful, allowing the patron to truly enjoy the best Germany has to offer. Choose wisely because the portion sizes are huge. Service could have been a little better; our waiter was a no frills type of guy. I think the potted plant I saw in the window of Grunauer had more personality than him. Wonderful food! This is a fantastic spot for a nice dinner with very authentic flavor. We have spent a lot of time in Germany and some of the options here were exactly the things we would get overseas! We enjoyed a fantastic bratwurst appetizer followed by schnitzel dinners. Grünauer had so many great options we'd love to try in the future as well. My only issue was after enjoying our appetizer and trying each other's meals I did not have the appetite for the sides that came with my schnitzel. We also ordered spatzle as a side with our meal, but it did not come out until closer to us being done eating because our waitress forgot to put it in with the original order. The sides that we did not eat as well as just a few bites of the spatzle I thought would be perfect for a lunch for us the following day. However, when she packed up our leftovers the smallest containers (like condiment containers) were used for our sides and we definitely did not get back even half of each plated item. We had a very good meal here on a Monday night in Kansas City. Our server Chelsea was cheerful, prompt and knowledgeable. We started out with drinks- a Paulaner and a Gruner Veltliner. Both paired well with our dinner. We started with the bread service which were four different rolls with spreads. Very tasty but we could only eat two of the rolls. We then shared the Blattsalatte salad which had a light pumpkin seed oil dressing. Very good too. Finally we shared the daily special entree which was the Jager schnitzel with a poached pear. You don't often find Austrian restaurants like this that aren't just beer garden. This elevated, but not pretentious, schnitzel house gave me an amazing surprise dinner during my road trip recently to Kansas City. Like I mentioned, ambiance was gorgeous. Felt like I was in a nice hotel restaurant. High ceilings, excellent lighting, Austrian decor strewn about, white tablecloth, all good. Service was pretty casual, though, which is just what I like. Real people having real conversations with you. The food was excellent. I had a special that I can't remember exactly what it was. It was a pork shank served osso bucco, on top of an excellent mashed potato. A wonderful tomato-based sauce was served on top, and this fall-off-the-bone shank was delicious and indulgent and just what I needed on this cold winter night. I also got to try a schnitzel with sides of spaetzle and warm red cabbage. Textbook. Crispy, juicy, delicious schnitzel. Creamy, herby spaetzel. And a pop of acid from the cabbage. This is one of the best meals on planet Earth, and this place did it right. No notes. For dessert, we chose a scrumptious little tartlet from their glass cabinet at the front of the restaurant. It was some sort of berry, and it came with a perfect little quenelle of cream on the side and a mint leaf. Great crust, great filling, just a great little way to end this meal. Overall, if you are interested in the menu at all, you will love it here. And if you're not interested in the menu, you gotta get out of the house more and come here anyway. What a perfect way to end my trip to Kansas City. I hope I get to come back one day. read more

Brie was an excellent server!! Please ask for her. Wow! She was so nice and patient in explaining all the Austrian words, food, and flavors. We had a 5:30 reservation and arrived a few minutes early and were seated immediately by the fantastic and competent hostesses. We decided to have the soup of the day which was potato. It was not like American potato soup that is so heavy and creamy and fattening. This was a lovely light potato broth soup with lots of garlic and some celery. I thought the bowl was actually a little too big, even when my wife and I were sharing. So next time I will get a cup. We got the bread basket, which we were enamored with. I found a pit in the olive bread, but I guess that's to be expected. The whipped butter with paprika was nice as was the cream cheese type spread. We shared the Hungarian goulash for dinner, which Brie was nice enough to split for us on two separate plates. I would like to come back and try the pork shank on a Wednesday night. The atmosphere is dark wood and brick. The tables are far enough apart that you don't feel like you're on top of each other. I was blown away by this place. I came here for dinner with 3 other friends after having eaten a huge lunch together, so we decided to order lightly because we weren't that hungry. After tasting the food, I ended up devouring it anyway because it was so tasty! I'll mention that one of my friends grew up eating a lot of home-cooked German food so there were some dishes that she thought were executed differently than what she was used to. However, as an ignorant coastal American who doesn't encounter much Austrian and Central European food on a regular basis, I loved this place! We started with the four hausbrot ($10) and kürbisrisotto ($16). The breads were quite dense and paired well with the butter and quark spreads. We loved the risotto, which had a very earthy flavor from the squash and brie cheese. The sage was a really nice touch that added more herby flavors to the dish. For our mains, we split the wiener schnitzel ($24) and sauerbraten ($27). Both dishes were so good and great for sharing. I often start to feel overwhelmed when a deep-fried dish is too greasy, but the wiener schnitzel never felt heavy. The breading was crispy and well-seasoned. The side salads were refreshing and added a lot of variety to the dish. I enjoyed the contrast between the cold, creamy salads and the hot, crispy schnitzel. I loved the red cabbage in the sauerbraten so much that I've since tried to make my own at home, but I'm still working on perfecting my recipe. The savory beef complemented the spices, sweetness, and mild tartness in the cabbage, and the spätzle was the perfect carby vehicle to soak up all the sauces. Made a last minute reservation for an early date night. So happy they were able to get us right in upon request. I've eaten here a few times, but my husband had not. This restaurant is absolutely romantic with its cozy atmosphere, especially with the Christmas tree and lights added in. Service was prompt, but a little pushy. We did have to ask for salt and pepper. I couldn't tell if she hadn't been a server long or had served for too long. When you have to upsell your own ticket, shows a bit of disconnect. Can we order drinks? Absolutely. Can we have some bread with our meal? Absolutely. The food was delicious and served quickly. The husband ordered the Beef Goulash and I ordered the Rainbow Trout (I have no idea who am I anymore), with the creamed spinach, which was everything I hoped it would be. We both cleared our plates. Stopped by for another Austrian bite to eat after watching Raiders of the Lost Ark at the Kauffman. The food is delicious! I opted for something I cannot pronounce, but turns out it was smoked pork belly, a wurst sausage, and a great ham steak. Add in a cocktail and the dark wood paneling. Gives a great place to sit and unwind over a long dinner. The waitstaff was, as always, playful and kind, while still keeping a level of sophistication. I already can't wait to go back. I tell you want, if it's a cold, rainy, dark night, this spot has all the vibes to welcome you in. The dark wood, the relaxed lighting, and comforting foods make it feel like you've been pulled out of the dark forest into the coziness. Our table shared a special ravioli app that I wish I could remember exactly what was in it, because it was outstanding. A great way to start the meal. I had the special (Tuesday) schnitzel which had horseradish and mustard. I was wondering if this was going to clear my sinuses for the remainder of the season, but it was quite mild. In fact, I'd say they're safe to ratchet up the kick from those two a bit to enhance it. It was pretty solid overall though, and more than enough food. I got the wiener schnitzel. It was alright. Undoubtedly good quality meat and I enjoyed the potato salad and cucumber salad that came along with it. The schnitzel could have used more seasoning though, I found it a little bland. What really brought down my experience though was the small portion size I got (see photo). Me and another guy sitting at the bar ordered the exact same dish and his came out with a schnitzel twice the size of mine! I'm aware that sizes of meat cuts can vary but seeing a major difference side by side annoyed me. As part of restaurant week I went with a group to Grünauer In the Kansas City West bottoms. Unlike a lot of downtown establishments, there is ample parking in this area. I started out with a Der Schmutzige which is a drink infused with kraut and beet juice with pepper vodka and it was fantastic. It was like drinking an upscale jolly rancher is the only way I can describe it. I also had a Golden Kolsch beer with my meal. For restaurant week they had a 3-course menu and I got the following items. The first course was soup and I got a parmesan semolina cream soup (I'm not going to try and type the actual name but it was a nice velvety chicken base soup. The second course was a beer braised pork chop with mashed potatoes and shaved brussels sprouts. The mashed potatoes were great but the demi-glaze on the pork chop was a little on the salty side and A couple other people who got the same thing agreed. The third course I got was a poppy seed souffle with with lemon anglaise. This wasn't my favorite, But I'm a sucker for trying new food. The souffle was poppy seed Forward but it was kind of a weird texture and had a lot of warm spices like nutmeg and cinnamon that seemed to clash on my taste buds. The The hostess and wait staff were really nice and the ambiance of the restaurant is really good, The plating of the food was very elegant and the location is great but The food was a bit hit and miss. read more

My friend knew I liked beer and so brought me to Grunauer specifically because he knew I'd enjoy the beer here. Since we had eaten already it was beer o'clock and we walked up to the bar, which not as grand as the main dining room was still impressive in its own way: clean and neat but still dim enough to still have that bar atmosphere. Despite being an Austrian bar the beer list was a little less focused, not necessarily a bad thing, appreciated the beers from Central Europe but I did focus on one of their beers from Stiegl, which is from Austria. I also tried a sour beer from Prairie and after mentioning how it wasn't to my liking, the bartender suggested a beer and was the best beer I had there. I appreciate when the guys aren't just there but actually have an opinion and have a stake in what they serve. read more

I really enjoyed our visit to Grünauer! I'm from out of town and heard great things. I came with 2 locals who had highly regarded this spot so I was definitely looking foreword to it. It isn't often that I enjoy Austrian/ Centeal European cuisine so I was looking forward to it. We started with the rosenkohlsalat and I think that was my favorite thing! Visited here from Maryland and it was meant to be because it was right off Baltimore Street!!! The parking is inside the threshold and there is plenty of parking in the area. Walking into the space, there is a fancy wine cooler and then some heavy wood doors that brings you into a kind of dim opening; for being during the day time. I asked for seating at the bar and the host followed to help and greet me right away. He was very nice with a unique hair do but who am I to judge, I'm bald. He immediately understood the time and brought me the happy hour menu but fulfilled my drink request immediately. After ordering from the HH menu, it came out very fast. The bartender was very knowledgeable with the items and the presentation was more than I imagined for an HH menu. I ordered the bratwurst and pomme frites. The bratwurst HH came with a fresh Dijon mustard with fresh shreds of horseradish...first time ever seeing this.... And it was bougie and deliciously fresh. The bratwurst was served with a warm pretzel. The pomme frites were comparable to an XL order of McDonald's fries but freshly cut and salted. It had 3 dips: curry ketchup, garlic aioli, and a special mayo. I wasn't a big fan of the ketchup but that's my opinion; you should at least try it. The garlic aioli and seasoned mayo were delicious. First off, the architecture is stunning. The whole vibe is relaxed and the leather booths are very comfortable. The waiter was so welcoming and so nice. I chose to come to KC specifically to this location to celebrate my 40th birthday and this sweet man brought me desert with a candle. Seems silly, but I almost cried. The gulasch was absolutely delicious, the sauce reminiscent of chili, not too hot and very comforting. My partner got the SCHNITZEL SEMMEL (yes that's copy paste from the menu lol) and very much enjoyed it. But the best part was finding out his fries tasted delicious with the gulasch sauce. I could eat it as its own meal. The APFELSTRUDEL dessert was stunning in texture and taste, tho surprisingly not sweet at all. The only thing I think I missed, was ice in my water. They can have a menu item that sounds so simple and basic, but it will always knock your socks off, every time. We came here for Mother's Day, just me and hubs. The restaurant is nice. We were seated immediately even though hubs did make reservations, we probably wouldn't have needed them for the time we came. I will say it got a lot busier as we were leaving. Our waitstaff was super nice. We got our drinks pretty fast. We both ordered 1st course options and let me tell you, the salad k had was the freshest thing I've eaten in a long time outisde of making my own. It just tasted like freshly picked. I loved that it had 4 kids of dressing on it for each side. It all paired well. Hubs had smoked salmon and it was so good. Perfectly cooked. Our main meals were equally as good! Everything was well seasoned and prepared to perfection. We also got desserts which we ended up bringing home becahee we were stuffed. We will definitely be back. You should eat here. Delicious! I had the Wednesday special slow roasted pork shoulder. The sides and pickled radishes built into the dish was the perfect balance to the meat. The pork was tender, easily shredded without a knife, and well seasoned without being too salty. My coworkers also enjoyed their dishes if the chicken schnitzel and the desserts. As a tourist, I didn't expect to find elevated German food in Kansas City, but was pleasantly surprised. Grunauer is a white linen restaurant, but also felt comfortable to come as you are for lunch. They have a great selection of beers and also all the typical German food fare. All was good, but just expect it to have a little twist on traditional flavors. For example, the purple cabbage had a sweet cinnamon flavor and the potato salad was not warm nor vinegary as usual. The pork schnitzel and the appetizer of pretzel and sausages were both very good (though frustrating that I was charged for extra lemon- without being told first). The meal was concluded with a mixed bag for dessert -- the hot chocolate had to be sent back (too watery and bland), the petit four type cake was very small for the price and not that good, and the baked pavlova was amazing (one of the best desserts I've ever had ... Recurrent trips to Kansas City on business always include a visit here, often for lunch. Tonight a colleague and I attended for dinner. The restaurant was not particularly busy at 7pm, and reservations weren't necessary, although we had made one. The food was good, our server was good. The other staff were unfortunately not welcoming and seemed quite put upon to have to seat us. It was even colder upon leaving. These experiences are lasting. Perhaps the young woman at the host's stand might explore opportunities for employment away from the public. Next time it's Lydia's, where they always roll out the red carpet! read more
