The drinks are huge and crushable, there are several bar areas (because navigating a crowd isn't always easy), and the service is always friendly. Expect Shark Bar to be pretty hoppin' come World Cup time, because their location is prime (upstairs is a sweet spot) and their drink specials are hard to top. The actual bar is fine and the people working were friendly but they charged a $10 cover for no live music or anything. It was the highest cover in the whole Power and Light and it was dead in there. Felt like bartender overcharged because I asked prices for beer vs well drink. He said beer $4.25 and well $5. But when I ordered 3 beers and cran vodka splash pineapple he said $5.50 so I decided on screwdriver instead making what I thought was a well drink. Somehow 3 beers and one screwdriver was $24. Given prices $4.25/ $5 quoted I don't believe the downtown tax rate is that high to make bill what it was. Sorry to sound petty but its merely the principle that he said a price but I don't believe that was what was charged. Did my thing} Returned to dance floor and my friends were gone. {Almost had a panic attack thinking about getting stranded in KC after dark} After about 20 minutes, I finally got a text saying they had moved to the upstairs floor of Shark Bar. $5 cover for guys, free entrance for girls. There were girls walking around in bikini tops and jeans shorts that had no business doing so. *As bigoted as it sounds... This was the only "dancing" place we went to that night after McFaddens, because we did not want to pay cover again for something just as terrible... But most service was ridiculous... my friends and I went up for drinks, called the bartender guy, and pretty much said, 'hold on, they came first'. The bar overall was interesting. Service was great, I never had trouble ordering a drink even on a busy Saturday night. They had a cover and a coat check cost, which seemed a bit much. $5 cover and $3 for coat check. Vodka cranberry was $7 and the cup was quite small. My friend got one of their specialty drinks which was $16 for essentially a rum punch. Overall cost was "okay". I wish there was either no cover or instead you didn't have to pay for coat check. Music was not that good. They played music you would hear on a typical radio pop station 5 years ago or 90s rap. And they bleeped our curse words or inappropriate language which seemed odd for a bar/dance club. The crowd is very mixed in terms of age. There were a fair amount of people ranging from 21-40. Rude Bartender! We went to Shark Bar this weekend for a Bachelorette Party. It was packed, but that was fine. A few of us were at the bar, patiently waiting to order WITH cash in hand. Some people in the back threw money at the bartender, which she then flaunted by putting it in her top, and running around showing the other bartenders. She then promptly served those people. And this continued. So my friend politely just ordered her drinks without being asked first, and we were explained that we would not get served because she had big tippers who would get her service first. I really don't like this place, and there are several reasons for this: 1) It's in P&L - most definitely NOT my favorite place to hang out. 2) The service is typically slow. Half of the servers look like they are randoms from "Jersey Shore" and walked out of the television screen. Some are even lacking more in the IQ department than Snooki. 3) The music selection is terrible. There are a handful of bad 80's songs that really should be left buried somewhere. You'll hear them all here in just one night. Also, Richard Simmons should not be on TV at a bar ever. I don't care if you are trying to make the videos to your music cute. It's not cute, it's disturbing. 4) Douchebags. Yep, this place is full of them. I don't just mean the young ones, either. Even normal 40 and 50-something year old men turn into douches after a few drinks and listening to the aforementioned terrible music. They return to their golden years of immaturity and start acting like the rest of the crowd. 5) Crowding. Shark Bar is almost always crowded... I dislike having to wade through a group of idiots, and I've often had to scale over the furniture in order to get to where my friends are. The only reason I wouldn't give Shark Bar a one-star rating is because of their happy hours. If one of my friends has one of these gems, it's the only time I'll go. These are typically through the hours of 7PM to 9PM. Otherwise, avoid this place at all costs! read more

I came here the other night with a group of people and was fairly disappointed. The environment is fun. I enjoy their music of some throwback jams, club music, and top hits. Hearing Backstreet boys in a bar will always make me happy. I went up to the bar to grab a drink and the bartender & some girl who I was assuming was a friend of hers talked for 20 minutes. I am standing there waving my money along with a big group of people and she continues to ignore everyone. I then walk over to another part of the bar to a different bartender. I still had to wait 10 minutes to make the simplest of drinks. It is super frustrating when you are trying to have a good time with your friends and it takes you 30 minutes to get a drink. The dance floor is fun but gets super crowded. There are some scary/sketchy people that are on the dance floor so it's best to stand on the patio or at a table. It's a pretty average Power & Light bar, but the most fun to me. You have to really like the 80-90's beach theme to enjoy this bar, otherwise you'll want to shoot yourself. I love when they play Saved By The Bell on the TVs. If you have a table reserved, be careful! Once you step away for a moment, people think it's up for grabs, despite there being a sign on the table that says Reserved For SoandSo. Table service is provided with a minimum of $250. But it's great if you are with a big group of people, because you get your own server and don't have to wait at the bar for drinks. We had a bachelorette party there the other night and our server was wonderful and it was her first night on the floor! The dance floor gets really crowded and a lot of shady frat-boys love to act like retards in this place. So, watch out, ladies. The worse thing was the restroom attendant. My god. There were two sinks in the bathroom, but she stood in front of one. Just texting away on her ugly outdated phone that matched her outfit. She wouldn't even look up when she handed out the paper towels. Finally, not wanting to stand in line for the sink after standing in line to even get into the bathroom, my sister kindly asked her if she could move. Didn't look up from that phone. For P &L, this is three stars. I am disappointed with the way that Power and Light has developed because it has so much potential. However, if I am dragged here I will choose Shark Bar only because I've not seen the same things here as I have others places such as fights and generally nasty weapon wielding women who get all crazy if you accidentally bump them and mess up their back combed hair. We came here for a friends' birthday and it was marginally fun. The dance floor is sectioned off with small platforms that make it hard to find room to dance so we opted to be the A-Holes and dance in the middle by the bar inside. The bouncers here are actually human and they smile and do human things. The bathroom attendants keep the bathroom smelling fresh and offer up little candy treats if you tip them. The bartenders are bitchy so you have to know what you want when they look at you or you're stuck waiting. My recommendation is to pay cash here because it's extra loud and peoples' tabs may get mixed up when the bartenders can't hear over the loud Backstreet Boys music. read more

I went to Shark Bar early on a Saturday night (about 9 pm) so it wasn't too crowded yet. As with most of the bars in the power and light district, they charge a cover, which I believe is $3 for ladies and $5 for guys. (However, we didn't get charged since it was still early.) Even though it was only 9 pm, and there were only about 15 people in the place, the music was so loud I couldn't even understand what my friend was saying and she was sitting right next to me. I had to literally shout at her and our legs were touching! It was ridiculous! The decor is beachy-themed, and they were playing 'retro' beach music (The Beach Boys, The Monkees, etc.) and the rope cover on the outside patio is really fun--it's huge twine ropes interlaced together to make sort of a woven cup. The inside of the bar is very open, with large pillows/padded cushions for seats (they were regular seating height, not on the floor)-- these looked very comfy if one needed to pass out and take a nap (Not that you could with the ear-splitting music playing). The wooden dance floor seemed welcoming and the employees were all beachy and good looking, wearing casual outfits designed to emulate lifeguards and cabana girls. The drink prices are what you would expect for the P&L district- $7-8 margaritas/speciality drinks (not sure about wells-- we ordered margaritas). There is only one bar inside (from what I could see, anyway) and it seemed really small for the large amount of people I assume come into Shark Bar on weekend nights. Anyway, I think that Shark Bar is a definite experience, and was a good idea, but I wasn't completely impressed. The environment almost seemed too forced, like they were trying to make you like it. I would go there again, but I probably wouldn't ever go if I had to pay a cover. read more

I won a free happy hour drawing at Shark Bar, for which I am appreciative of the 9 free drinks for my entire party (3 free drinks an hour), but I feel kind of mislead! I had never been to happy hour at Shark Bar before so maybe that was my bad, but when they said free food buffet, I thought that was something special for my winning! Nope, not at all, food buffet was for everyone and, as a result, there was nothing left when I got there! The waitress also told me they were going to refill (it was only about 8:15PM) but they never did. Ridiculous. TBH, I probably would not have chosen to come here on a Friday night if I knew that my free happy hour winning did not consist of anything special. I think the music is whatever here (they tend to play more older 80s kind of stuff) but the decor is also a bit kitschy in my opinion. They do have a nice patio area that is roped off, from which you can see the main stage, but seating is limited and it just got way too crowded later on in the evening. In fact, that is possibly why it is called the Shark Bar because dance floor is lined with either frat boys or divorced 50 something men waiting to pounce on the drunk, "why am I not the one getting married" bridesmaids. The drink prices are a bit inflated, and there is not a good selection of beer at all. The bar staff was friendly, but the door guys need to check their ego. Brought 11 ladies for a bachelorette party and loved it! We knew every song that played (80s-2000s pop and alt rock). Black lights illuminate guests and the beach themed decor. A large dance floor boasts two raised runways if you're feeling the catwalk. A few of us purchased the the Shark Bar large cups that had discounted cocktail refills and could be taken to other clubs in the district. Heads up, the pre-made cocktails are SO SUGARY. We did enjoy the multiple bars, fully stocked with pretty bar tenders in their scantily clad beach babe "uniforms." The balcony allowed a great view of the district center square, including the big screen that played the real-time Royals game. My most impressed moment came from our attempt to leave with glass bottles and the security quickly flagging us down to transfer the alcohol into a disposable plastic cup before we continued our journey. read more
