One of the movies I've watched during quarantine was Chef. I really enjoyed it, and I don't want to go into detail, but let's just say you'll be craving a Cuban sandwich after watching it. Where should you fulfill that Cubano craving? GUAVA TREE!!! They've got so many warm, mouth-watering sandwiches and arepas, but if you've never been, I strongly suggest starting with their most popular-the Cubano. Today, I added caramelized onions and roasted red peppers to my Cubano for funsies. When I saw the side of three Yuca fries, at first I was like, "Hm, okay...portion control?" But upon eating everything together, I quickly changed my mind. It was plenty enough. Seriously though, Guava Tree yuca fries are meant to be saaaavored along with their homemade aioli garlic sauce, not devoured in the car ride home like you would with some basic Mickie D's french fries. This is one of my favorite lunch spots in Nob Hill! I love the lunch special that has a little bit of everything. The fried Yucca in the cream sauce is the best! It's heavy enough to last me through the day without being overly stuffed (I usually don't finish the rice and stick to the salad & protein). They also give you a lemonade with the special that is sooo good! My husband loves the cubano and pernil sandwich. Everything on their menu is so authentic. This location is in Nob Hill and is in a wonderful, cozy building with a few outdoor seating options. The arepas and sandwiches are INCREDIBLE. Please try the yucca fries- and get extra sauce. That stuff is addictive. I had a delicious drink made of lemonade with cinnamon. It was flavorful and quite refreshing! The arepa pabellon that I devoured was a combo of the most incredible flavors and textures. It was stuffed with black beans, cheese, beef and plantains. Disappointing. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't great--especially for the price. We ordered two different arepas and they were both a little tough and chewy. The pernil sandwich was a very dry. We also got two amigos platters. The yuca fries were good, but the tostones did not taste fresh. We came around 2pm and they close at 4pm, so maybe that's why things didn't taste fresh. read more

The Amigos basket, with tostones, fried plantains and yucca is definitely made to share. All are made to order and delicious. Of the two sauces that were served with it -- both excellent -- the white garlic mojo was my favorite. The Arepa de Perro was filled to bursting with shredded pork, avocado, and fried plantains. Delicious! The lemonade, prepared to order, was amazing (so much so that I ordered another one for the road). When I was in high school I worked at a Cuban restaurant. I had the pleasure of dishing up ropa vieja, pollo ajillo, and fried plantains to hungry patrons. We love trying new restaurants now that our youngest son (a very picky eater) is in college. This restaurant has been on my list for a long time, and I am so happy today we decided to try the Guava Tree Cafe! The menu on their web page is far better at describing the food than the one available in the restaurant. I chose the Arepa Pabellon with shredded beef, Cuban-style black beans, sweet plantains and fresco cheese, all in between two flat corn rounds. It also came with a green plantain round with a salsa on top on the side. So messy, and so good! I wish the sweet plantains had lasted to the bottom, as they were so perfect. My spouse got the Cuban sandwich with 3 Yucca Root fries. She said that the sandwich was excellent. We both chose a fruit drink (mango and guava) in water; Cool and tasty. Next step? I was in the mood for something different and I enjoy Cuban sandwiches. I had the Arepa Pabellón, my mother had the Pernil and my boyfriend had the Guava Pollito. Everything was delicious! The only thing I didn't care for was the corn meal patty "bread" it was really thick and mushy and made it hard to swallow. The filings of my sandisk was amazing so I picked that out and enjoyed it. The lemonade was very different but refreshing with cloves and cinnamon. The reason for the 2 starts and not more is the bathroom was disgusting! The light switch was converted with old paint and gross black goo. The trim on the floor had dust and grime on it, the walls were dirty and the door had dark "water stains" running down it. I didn't think the order area was very clean either. The counter was sticky and as drink area, where they make your drinks was unkempt and liquid on the counter. If the bathroom is dirty, the rest of the establishment is going to dirty. If I had seen the bathroom before we ordered, we would not have stayed. Really great gem in the heart of Albuquerque. We stopped in for a quick bite and was treated to a burst of culinary experience. When a meal is this alive and obviously carefully constructed, one knows the culinary masters take pride in their offerings. The food is, to put it mildly, a cornucopia of palate contrast. I love this location in downtown Albuquerque. This area is home to some of the best restaurants in the city. The service is a little lacking with a less than friendly cashier and very casual order at the register and seat yourself vibe. It is a small, quaint place overall. Guy Fieri has also made a visit here. There is also a second location in Tin Can Alley. I am not familiar with Cuban food, but I do enjoy all types of cuisine and tend to enjoy trying new foods. My lunch today was ok. Nothing to really brag about. I ordered the Arepa Pabellon with yuca fries. Again, it was only ok. The arepa(much like a handheld stuffed sopapilla in presentation) was really over full of shredded beef and fried plantains and black beans. It was very messy, despite giving the appearance that one should be able to pick it up and eat it. Juice from the beans poured out of the bottom making it impossible to hold. The yuca fries were pretty good with the garlic sauce as in other reviews. The flavors in the arepa were bland, and any real taste came thru as sweet. I don't want sweets for lunch. I have always wanted to try this place out and I finally did! The restaurant was cozy and somewhat small. The inside seating area can hold about 20 people at most; more seatings are outdoor at the patio. I wouldn't dare to sit outside at this time of the year even though they have umbrellas and shades. I ordered the lunch special (see picture). It also came with house made lemonade, which was very good - the perfect balance of sour and sweet! There are other sandwich options with fried yucca, which was delicious! The place was busy when I went there so this proves that it is a popular eatery place. As much as I enjoyed the tasty food, I walked away with food smell on my clothes. I know that it is a trade off of sitting in the AC vs. open air. Maybe a better vent in the kitchen can help solve this. read more

I really really enjoyed this little spot! This place is perfect for a casual lunch spot! Guava Tree is perfect with its Latin flavors and Maracuya drink to compliment Albuquerque's perfect weather. The yuca fries, sweet plantains, and tostones are perfect and the aoli that the yuca fries are served with is perfect. The ajiaco has varied between good and excellent when I've ordered it. My wife decided on the Guava Pollito, and both sandwiches were made up of a rich combination of various tasty ingredients that worked together nicely to tickle one's palate and thus satisfy one's hunger. One of my favorite places in town! As a plant-based eater, it's often difficult to find I place I can eat, that others can enjoy too. This is not the case with Guava Tree Cafe! The food always tastes so fresh! I get the arepa machilla and always get a big side of rice and beans because that's my weakness. Sometimes I get the pelotero with mushrooms and onion instead of the meat. They're so accommodating for me and I appreciate it greatly. The lemonade that comes with the pelotero is on point! This place looks more like someone's house than a restaurant. The menu is very limited. Where are the meat Pastellios, the Papa Rellenas, the Bacalao?
