The woman inside the service shop is very rude. Although their air pump is functional, which is better than most gas stations, the location of the pump is very challenging - so you need to squeeze between cars in the service bays, parked ZIP cars and cars pumping gas. I had to interrupt inflating my tires to move my car for other cars, and the air pump kept timing out, requiring me to go inside to ask for the air to be restarted. The older woman behind the counter kept muttering under her breath at me each time, just because she needed to press a button for me. Especially in light of gas prices these days, does it really put her out to fulfill her legal obligations to provide free air to paying customers??? read more

Took my car here because it was AAA approved and I was not near my home. Charged me kind of a lot for a radiator and some hoses but had already used one of my tows so just wanted to drive home. Car again overheated 3 weeks later and took it here because I was again not near home and suspected that they were at fault. They wanted to charge me over a thousand dollars for some hoses and fans. I had it towed somewhere else and they fixed it for about $100. I was afraid I might overheat again but it's a month later and all is fine. Then I realized that the hose he had showed me with the leak had been the one he had just replaced. Just sayin.... he seemed like a nice guy but now I am not sure about his honesty. I think he knew I was desperate to get home and because I am female thought he could It is several months later now and my car has not overheated. The one hundred dollar repair I got elsewhere was obviously successful. So glad I didn't have him fix it for a thousand dollars. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE! HE WILL RIP YOU OFF! Vu is awesome. I signed up for Yelp a year ago just so that I could write a review about my great experience getting an oil change. I took my super old '89 Acrua Legend to this Shell when I first moved to my new apartment on Guerrero because it was close AND open on a Saturday. Vu told me it would be $40 and would be ready in a couple of hours. I told him about some of concerns that I had with the car. I went back in a couple of hours and he had finished the oil change, checked out my concerns, and had my bill for $40 (including tax and fees) waiting. This may seem simple, but you don't know how many mechanics have tried to convince me that my car would fall apart immediately if I did not have them do tons of work -- when I just wanted an oil change. Then a year or so later, my car really started falling apart and Vu has been very honest about which things are important to fix and how much each thing would cost. It's still running! Doesn't even deserve a star! But by default I must give one to write my entry on how terrible Guerrero Shell is. DO NOT GO THERE! You'll take your car in to have routine maintenance (ex: a tune-up) and they will call you with a laundry list of things to fix. When you say that you would like to pick you car up and take it somewhere for a second opinion they will damage your car! When I picked my car up it was not in the condition I had dropped it off and this was without work being done on it. I took it to another mechanic and he said that my spark plug had been smashed with a pair of pliers! VU IS A CROOKED MECHANIC! DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN HONEST MECHANIC. Don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion and don't leave your vehicle alone with a mechanic who is known for his shady activity. read more

Girl goes to a mechanic. Girl doesn't know jack about cars. Girl gets ripped off with needless repairs. This has never happened to me at Guerrero Shell. Vu is a honest, hard-working guy. A neighbor recommended this shop to me after my car died at the intersection of 16th and Mission during rush hour on a Friday. Fun. I have a very old car. It's a Honda. He tells me it will last forever. OK, this is an exaggeration but with 138K miles it's got some life left in it. Each year there is some major repair. In the five years I've gone to Vu, he's replaced a distributor, my master cylinder, brakes and was able to find the replacement to the "computer brain " that ran the car. Hey, I told you my car is old! When I do price comparisons it's either right on the mark of other shops or a bit lower. The honest service has me sold. I'd recommend him to anyone. read more

I've been going here off and on since I moved to the city. It's by far my first choice of all the places to go for a car repair or a smog check. Vu is very friendly, helpful, and knows his job well. He is also very conscientious and has always come across as strictly honest to me. He reminds me of a small town mechanic, and to me that's a very good thing. I've had them do quite a bit of work on various cars I've owned, and have never had a single complaint. He always points out anything else that is broken or worn and may need replaced soon, but there is never any pressure if you decide not to fix it at the time. I've smogged 2 cars here, and both times I've had to fix something and come back. The retest was free both times, and he didn't seem offended that I elected to fix the problems myself instead of having him do it. He even offered free advice on things I should fix before retesting. I think that this is an excellent place to go for any type of service on your car, I've had a distributor and a timing belt replaced here and they did an excellent job on both. read more

Pablo & Vu have been incredible, giving me honest fixes, timelines, and severities of my car's ailments. Not a bad location for gas, accessibility is good as well as no shady characters lurking by to come grab your wallet or purse. I usually pump my gas here on my way out of the Mission and into the Sunset or out to the Bay Bridge. The only thing I've noticed about this Shell location and another on Valencia, is that there is this specific bum, who inevitably drop a shit right on the sidewalk and in plain view of everyone. My car started smoking in Hayes Valley, but I kept going. I really couldn't find a spot to pull over, and was a bit stubborn, hoping the car would just stop doing what it was doing. . . and avoided eye contact with other drivers that kept staring at my smoking car! Once on Guerrero I could see I really needed to pull over, and made it to this Shell station. I asked the mechanic if I could drive home like this (after it cooled down of course), he said that I shouldn't because I'd burn the engine out, if I hadn't already after seeing how I had already driven the car longer than I should have. Ugh. I reluctantly left car in the car of the mechanic and bussed it home. I knew what would happen the next day, the mechanic would call and say that the engine died and it would cost 5 million dollars to fix it. I was wrong. My engine was fine, just had a hose rip, paid for the part and the labor. Honest guy, and very friendly. read more

I took my car here based on a referral from my body shop. My car suddenly started to overheat with very little use .. the temperature gauge would go from normal to red in a blink of the eye - SCARY Because my car had just been returned from the body shop i took it back to them asking them to make sure they had hooked everything up correctly. They took it upon themselves (Superior Automotive) to take it to Guerrero Shell to have it inspected. I was told that my thermostat had failed and it needed to be replaced. Ok fine, my checkbook is open so lets keep spending... I spoke with Vu - really nice guy and the primary mechanic at Guerrero Shell. I am skeptical of all auto repair businesses but he put a good foot forward... He says he can have the car back to me in a day at the time I requested.. 3-4pm. At about noon of the day I need my car back I call in to make sure they are on track they say they are. About an hour later I get a call from Vu telling me that the thermostat fix didnt work and that he now thinks its the water pump. OK NOW - Im not gonna have any of this running total repair bill business so I push back hard and tell him I dont think its fair since he made the initial diagnosis... blah blah blah... VU DOESNT BLINK and as nice as can be says that he will replace the water pump and we can talk about what happens next if the water pump repair doesn't work. He tells me he has to get back to work so he can get my car back to me that same day if the part arrives on time.. To wrap it up Vu did repair my car, he even stayed past closing so that I could have it back that day ( was driving down to San Jose that evening for a dinner party ) and didnt charge me for the work he did on the initial repair. He even gave me a container of water to keep in the car case of another overheat (should the repair not fix the issue) This could have gone very badly but because VU is so pleasant and fair i have nothing but praise - couldnt have asked for a better mechanic. Horrible! Do not take your car here! They are thieves! Went in for a simple smog repair came out with a busted drivers side mirror. When confronted about the damage response was "I can't keep my eye on all the cars on the lot" WTF?! I've been taking my cars to Vu for about 7 years. I can definitely find cheaper repair shops in Oakland and maybe even in SF but I trust Vu, you can't really put a price on that. Vu is really open with his advice, what I really need to replace, what I can be cheap on. I've had my car break down on me twice, both times I called Vu to see whether it was safe to drive it to his shop. One time was fine, the other time, he gave me the number of a tow truck company he works with. I remember the towing charge to be reasonable, don't quite remember what it was. I've had repairs from tune ups to transmission/engine rebuilds done at Guerrero shell. read more

Got my oil changed in 1/2 an hour for the BF's car. Had I not known how fast SpeeDee Oil Change was in DC then I would have been happy with this place. He told me it was going to take that long with anyone as they have to put the car up on that pole thing. Oh well. I had nowhere to sit or wait though while it was done, so I wandered around the neighborhood. Came back, and paid and was on my way. The neighborhood didn't creep me out, nor did the guy changing the oil ,which sometimes does happen. That is a plus about this place. Came here for STAR-certified smog check, called ahead and then was in & out in in 20mins, went to nearby Stanza coffee in the meantime for an awesome espresso (they have a patio in the back, enter through next door Pork Store cafe during these COVID times), and the test passed without problem, so could not have had a best experience. Vu was very friendly and helpful. Although his garage was full, he said he could smog test my car in 30 mins. I came back 30 mins later and he had already finished. He even warned me that I needed an oil top off. Definitely a good spot for smog testing if you're in the neighborhood. I usually take my car to the dealer for repairs, but now that it's becoming an older car, I may just try out Vu's. read more

I regret not taking these guys to small claims court. These guys damaged my car and wouldn't take responsibility. They were supposed to replace worn tie rods and I got back a car with a damaged power steering rack and missing half a tank of gas. The power steering had always worked perfectly before they worked on my car. I had to take it to Cowden Automotive to get the power steering rack replaced. Cowden Automotive also informed me that Shell Guerrero had replaced the tie rods with parts from two different manufacturers. Bottom line, don't go here. I think these other Yelp reviewers are fake. read more
