I have been to Guildhall many times. Last night was the worst experience I have ever had there. One person in our party of 4 ordered dinner off the sushi menu. Her dinner did not arrive at the table until everyone else had finished eating and the dishes had been cleared. When we spoke to the manager about us, she was unconcerned and told us that the sushi was made in a separate kitchen and oh well, too bad for us. Unacceptable. I really really wanted to love this place. Came on a Saturday evening for my birthday with a reservation. The place is beautiful but seating is uncomfortable. Food is average at best, nothing stood out but nothing was terrible. Something that was terrible was the service; Felt like we were being rushed yet neglected at the same time. She was so kind and walked me through all my options, and answered all of my questions about the menu. We ate outside, which was nicely heated even in November. A repurposed early 20 th century hardware store not serves as a charming, comfortable, chic spot for lunch, brunch and dinner. Busy and vibrant brunch scene with a nice selection of menu options. We were seated in the covered sidewalk section and even though it was chilly out, the heated space was really nice. The whole setting was lovely and the servers more than adequate. Here's the problem. The food was average at best. And that's being gracious. We were there for a late Mothers Day morning breakfast and our omelettes, pancakes, potatoes, etc... were just not that good. I wanted to love the place but I've probably had better breakfasts at Dennys. So if your just looking for a nice place to meet up and not that particular about the food, this might be a good place for you. I think I'll look elsewhere. read more

We were soooo looking forward to our first restaurant dining experience in over a year! We have some health concerns so we had been trying to be extra careful during the COVID pandemic and had only gotten curbside takeout or delivery from restaurants. We knew we wanted to try a greenhouse or dome dining for our first foray into the public so that we were separated from just being out in the open with other diners without masks. Guildhall fit the bill - they take precautions very seriously, from all staff wearing heavy duty masks, wiping down tables, and spraying each greenhouse with sanitizer in between guests. These procedures are great and other restaurants should take note! The ambiance and semi private nature of the greenhouses was a big bonus too. Each one also has its own heater that you can turn on or off (but cannot adjust high/low). If I was rating this just for the cleanliness and greenhouses, it would be 5 stars. However, the service really left much to be desired. Our waitress was operating on her own timeline. When we just sat down, she came no less then 3 times within the first 5 minutes trying to take our order. We hadn't even had a chance to look at the menu yet the first time. We literally just sat down. But then after she took our order, she would disappear and didn't come back for 15+ minute stretches. For example, we had asked for ranch with the kid's chicken fingers when we ordered our meal. It didn't arrive, so we told the food runner. No one came back with the ranch. The tuna carpaccio I ordered apparently doesn't come with bread, toast points or anything to go with it, so I added bread. The ranch showed up about 10 minutes later. My bread (which came completely burnt) came 20 minutes later, and only AFTER I had to ask about it. Everyone else had already finished their dinner! No apology for the lateness or burnt-ness. And they still charged me for the burnt bread. Also another thing to note, the waitress had said the crushed walnuts were mixed with the goat cheese (when I asked for no nuts on my beet salad), but I didn't want to forgo the goat cheese so I said it was fine (not an allergy for me, just a preference), but when it arrived it was clearly not mixed together - you can see it in the photo. Everyone liked their food for the most part. One piece of the sake (salmon nigiri) had gristle in it, but the others were fine. Kids pizza and chicken fingers were good. The D'Artagnan Beef Tenderloin was amazing, the carrots, potatoes, sauce...everything was spot on. Beet salad and tuna carpaccio was okay. While the food was decent, even if it was a little pricey for what you get, the service was horrendous. I would only return if I could be guaranteed never to sit at this server's section again - inattentive, unsympathetic, cold. I was extremely jealous of the section across from us who had a waitress that actually checked on her tables. Greenhouses = 5 stars; service = 0 stars; overall = 2 stars. FYI - they don't offer any freebies for special occasions, but they will add a candle to a purchased dessert. We opted to pass on dessert after our dismal service. And apparently they also don't tell you happy birthday since no one mentioned it (I had emailed earlier about it). read more

We had a great time with some friends this evening. We had reserved a greenhouse to be able to have a safe dining experience. The greenhouse seated 6 people which was a perfect fit for our group. They had a heating lamp which seemed a bit chilly. They added a space heater which made it very toasty. We ordered a few sushi rolls, beet salad, sea bass, steak, chicken, and cauliflower. Everything was delicious. Lots of flavors and I loved the blood orange as an added touch to many dishes! Can't wait to come back and try more!! read more

I went with family last night and was disappointed. The calamari based appetizer was mostly breading - virtually no fish. Awful. Then I ordered the red snapper - a $44 meal. They brought out a tiny portion of fish that was so overcooked that it was difficult to cut it with a knife. When the waitress asked me how I liked my meal, I showed her how terrible it was. She offered to get me a replacement, but I declined, opting to just pay, leave and NEVER come back. I was also afraid to ask for a replacement as I was concerned that the chef would spit in my food. She went and got me a replacement meal anyway, and while the portion was ridiculously small for $44 meal, it was cooked properly and was edible. I will NEVER go back to this awful, overpriced, overrated restaurant. There is a nice Italian place right across the street that is orders of magnitude better. BTW, this is the second time I was there and ordered an expensive meal and was brought garbage. Avoid the Guildhall. read more

Fabulous waitress, tasty food, and great patio ambiance were simply NOT enough to let go of the feeling of being taken advantage of. It started with the reservations. If you want to make a reservation, you must pay a refundable deposit of $60, PLUS a $2.25 service charge for using their website with an explanation that this fee helps them maintain the reservation site. Uhmm, WHAT?! How do other places manage to take reservations via Yelp, Open Table, Resy, or other systems without charging the user a mandatory fee?! Ok not a great start, so hopefully the food and ambiance will be the redemption. Well, the food and dessert tasted great (especially the $22 burger), and the outdoor patio was cozy, and lively. The issues however did not stop :(. While our waitress was EXCEPTIONAL, the food server who brought the food to our table was not, because he kept tossing, YES tossing the plates onto the metal table in front of each diner. We first noticed this with the table next to us, and they tried to nervously laugh it off like it was the kitschy thing specific to Guildhall, but No, this guy was slamming food in front of everyone he served... many noticed this, but no one said anything so as not to cause an issue. The prices were high, but I guess that is acceptable for the North Shore location. Although, the $12 guacamole with like 10 tortilla chips and 2 tablespoons of guac, or a small bowl of shishito peppers for $16 was quite excessive. Then when we got the bill, on top of the added 1% Glencoe tax, we noticed that a mandatory "3% health and wellness surcharge has been added to each guest check to ensure benefits for all our valued full time team members." Uhmm, WHAT again?! Why not start adding upcharges for the sanitation services, or for the water that washes the silverware, or for the electrician who works on the restaurant? Why stop here? I mean, we are already paying $2.25 for the reservation website, the additional 1% to Glencoe, and now a 3% for workers' benefits... let's keep going? Look, I understand that many places suffered during Covid, but many also made due with carry outs and delivery services and thrived. So the old "we are recovering Covid losses" adage does not work anymore, and taking advantage of the goodness of patrons is a sure way to earn these kinds of negative impressions and reviews. By the way, regular people are hurting too, and coming out for an occasional dinner out should not require a loan officer or a grief counselor ;). Bottom line, I would NOT go back and based on this restaurant's treatment of its customers (numerous upcharges and added fees, high prices for dishes that simply are not worth it, and poor table service) I would NOT recommend anyone hurry to try this place out... sorry Guildhall, but you need to change quite a few things or risk losing business once your "North Shore" crowd grows tired of your taking advantage of them. read more

This was not an awesome brunch experience. I came here for the first time with two friends. The ambiance is nice inside: modern farmhouse style, very charming. I had a mimosa, which was good. Both of my friends had coffee and each claimed it was the worst coffee they had ever tasted, which is a bold statement. The server, who was very good the whole time, brought them cappuccinos instead which they said were much better. Both of my friends enjoyed their food. I, however, ordered the banana granola pancakes with a side of breakfast sausage. Note the plural "pancakes," which is what the menu advertises. I was brought a single pancake on a plate. What the what?!? And it was just okay: a plain pancake sprinkled with granola and a few banana slices. I was super disappointed. Also, for a whopping $16, I expected a minimum of two sub-par pancakes, not just one. Please change your menu to read "PANCAKE" and also try to make better ones. At least the sausage was good and I got two sausages with my order, ironically. Hmph. read more

Ambiance is really nice but that's where the positives stop. Our server was inattentive, we sat with empty drinks for 30 mins. When we finally got his attention he only got 1/3 drink orders and ran away. We ended up splitting 1 drink 3 ways because we couldn't get his attention again. The food left a lot to be desired. We ordered branzino which was described as served with grilled peaches and an arugula salad- sounds delish! What they left out was that the entire thing was served on top of marinara sauce! Have you ever tried peaches in marinara? I do not recommend. Too bad since there are not a ton of great restaurants in the North Shore and we were hoping to find a gem. Although I live in Chicago, I've already been here two times. The first time I can here I went for brunch. The second time I went for dinner. First, their food is excellent. At brunch, I ordered the shakshouka and the Guild Hall Burger. The shakshouka was good, but the star of brunch for me was the burger. It had a thick and juicy patty. I liked that they didn't load it with toppings. It came with caramelized onions, cheese and pickles. While the brunch was good, their food really shined during their dinner service. At dinner, I ordered the snapper ceviche, roasted half chicken, Lake Superior white fish, truffle fries and brownie a al mode. Each dish was delicious and refined. I especially liked the Lake Superior white fish. It was flakey and cooked perfectly. I also loved the snapper ceviche. The truffle fries were good, but not extraordinary. Other the truffle fries to get the jalapeño aioli. It was a great dipping sauce not only for the fries, but also for my other dishes. Lastly, the brownie was luxurious and indulgent. Second, it has a great atmosphere. At brunch I ate in one of their igloos. It was spacious, warm and fun. For dinner, I ate in the restaurant, and I loved the vibe. While much of their menu is refined, the atmosphere was laid back and not intimidating. Third, their staff was nice and service was friendly. At dinner, the waiter was accommodating, and his knowledge of the food and menu helped me make great choices for my meal. I went there with my husband and my dogs for brunch. They have outside seatings where dogs are allowed. Their cocktails were very nice, and the spinach quiche and the shrimp sandwich were both very tasty. I felt they use good ingredients and cook foods with cares. How can lunch turn into such a disaster on a quiet afternoon at this North Shore restaurant??? Arriving around 1:30 only 3 tables were filled inside the restaurant with a few tables seated outside. We sat inside since it started to rain. Our waiter was wonderful but unfortunately everything else was downhill from here. I ordered a wild salmon burger and my husband ordered a chopped salad. We waited what seemed like forever for our food. By the time it was served there was only one other table left who was paying for their check. What could take so long for such a simple order with so few customers after 2pm??? We asked our waiter what was the delay and she said it's coming soon. Waited some more asked again, finally food was served. BUT hard to believe it didn't end here. Our food was poorly prepared. Salmon burger was barely warm and dried out. Salad was wilted and dressing had so much vinegar you could barely eat it. Fries soggy... We told our waiter, she offered to check for kitchen to do a new order but we already waited so long we said no. At this point the food tasted worse and just told her to bring our check which took forever. (Seemed she was trying to get approval from a manager?) She removed the salmon burger from our check but not the salad!!!!! I asked what about the salad that was just as bad. At that point she agreed but once again had to check w/manager - which took another ridiculous amount of time as she ran around. What baffles me the most is I've been going to Guildhall for years and couldn't understand how their food could be prepared so poorly. BUT the biggest issue that's most upsetting about all of this is NO MANAGER ever came over and apologized. Left the poor waiter to run around & get some kind of approval. We waited again what seemed like forever and finally I got up walked to the back of restaurant and I think it's mgr? huddled in back just said I gave u credit & said nothing else while another mgr? type just looked on!!!! We were just appalled???? We figured they must have new owners and managers??? Like we were in a different restaurant??? Last night I met up with a few of my friends for dinner prior to the Botanic Gardens Lightscapes. My friends arrived to the restaurant a few minutes before me and were seated. I arrived a few minutes later and quickly ordered a drink. Once he delivered the drink he wanted to take our order. It was very rushed. I ordered the lentil soup and it had a rich flavor but lacked seasoning. It also had a couple small sprigs of dill in it which was awkward to chew while trying to enjoy the soup. I then ordered the spinach ravioli, once again it lacked seasoning. It was incredibly bland and topped with stale, plain bread crumbs which made the meal even more flavorless. When the waiter brought our bill he brought it on one check. We asked if the check could be split into multiple checks he replied in a nasty tone that he could not now that the bill was run. He stated that if we wanted separate checks we needed to tell him as soon as we began our order. One of my friends went and tracked down someone and the woman was kind enough to split the checks for us (apparently it could be done). Overall, the food was insipid, the waiter was ill-mannered, and the restaurant was loud and stuffy. I will not be returning. read more

For the prices, you can do much better. Our last visit was with a stereotypically rude French waitress. She never asked about the food. If she did, I would have mentioned that my $20+ hamburger that I ordered medium rare was served to me well done. Cocktails are pretty good but pricey. Guildhall is a reliable restaurant with a nice ambiance both inside and on the sidewalk. The menu offers a fair variety of American bistro food with nods to some international cuisines. You just can't take the menu dish names too seriously. For example, "Tarte Flambee" has no characteristics in common with a tart, and is not flambeed. It's actually a flatbread with a generous layer of cheese and ample piles of bacon. And it's big enough to serve as an entree, or for a table of four to share as an appetizer. Yet the other appetizers we tried were much, much smaller. The delicious Ahi Tuna Crudo was just five small bites. And the also good smoked salmon was five slightly larger servings that were two or three bits each. Both would be a good appetizer for one person. We also shared the seared shishito peppers. These were good, but were far spicier than I've had elsewhere; perhaps it was just this batch, but we ended up seeding them to make them more palatable. Squid Ink Bucatini was just so-so. The shrimp and calamari were generous, but the bucatini was overcooked. Because it is essentially spaghetti with a hole through the center, it is very delicate, and needs a defter touch. The Guildhall Burger was the best entree we tried. It was generous and juicy, topped with nice condiments and veggies, and served with well-crisped fries. Skip the espresso, which is very bitter. Service wasn't quite at a fine dining level, but was certainly adequate, and sufficiently attentive for an enjoyable meal on a very busy Father's Day evening. read more

We stopped in for a Sunday evening dinner--ordered the burger which came back exactly as requested. It's scripted as a prime beef burger and it was prime! Well constructed with mozzarella and watercress. Even the condiments were imaginative. Pomme frites also very enjoyable. The setting is of a bistro, roomy, comfortable, affable. Our server was Gilberto who was a 5-star server, making sure we were content and the iced tea kept coming. I'd suggest a look toward gluten-free items, but this shortcoming is manageable. read more

Solid lunch & dinner spot in the heart of downtown Glencoe. Beautiful interior decor with COVID-friendly seating outside (they have little private houses with tables + blankets & heaters). I went for brunch and ordered the Dutch Baby which was delish, and the Belgian waffle was good as well. Service was fast and friendly. Prices are decent for the area, nothing insanely expensive but relatively pricey. Definitely will go back when I'm in the area again read more

Appetizers- delicious, small menu but solid options. Our favorites are: Tarts flambé- this item is totally not a tarte nor flambé, but I don't care because it is so freaking delicious. It's a flatbread with bechamel sauce, caramelized onions and thick cut glorious bacon Kale salad: pairs perfect with the tarte. On a Saturday night when the place is packed anyway. It was refunded but SERIOUSLY?? Then - they tacked on an "event fee" of $4. This was not posted on the menu and we weren't informed of this by our server. Sorry but this is deceptive and it makes me wonder what else they pad on the bill. I really want Guildhall to make it, especially since it's the only restaurant within walking distance of my house that's appropriate to dine without your children. Imagine that. Based on the crowd there last Sat night I"m not the only person in the North Shore excited about this new restaurant. For a few minutes there I almost thought I was dining in the city just looking at the trendy crowds filling this restaurant. The french inspired decor of this restaurant is beautiful. I"ll admit I found myself checking out every little detail from the ceilings to the walls...and wondering what decorating ideas I could borrow for my new home. The cocktails and food that we actually received (more to come about that later) was delish. I liked my pisco sour so much that I ordered another. The tuna app was scrumptious and my salmon special should be added to the main menu...and should probably replace the mediocre trout my husband ordered. I'm being gracious with my 4 star review and giving them a little slack since they are new because the service deserved no more than 2 stars. Our drinks took at least 20-30 minutes. They forgot to bring out 2 of our appetizers, which they made up for with a dessert on the house (you can skip dessert here by the way) ...but a few members of my party mentioned they left the restaurant hungry. Our waitress wasn't cut out for fine dining and would be better fit for the casual kid friendly Vernon's down the street. We'll be back out of convenience and as I mentioned above they've got something good going on with the food and ambiance. We arrived eight minutes before our reservation and we're told to come back to the host stand in eight minutes. So we got a cocktail at the bar which was delicious. We were seated on time and ordered something to start which was also delicious. Our server offered us a drink order but we had our drinks, he didn't ask again for the rest of the night. In fact he avoided eye contact as he ran by our table Multiple times. Our dinner was served and we didn't even have a fork to eat it with. We had to wave someone down to get the right utensils. The people clearing the tables were aggressive. I was still holding my fork from my last bite when they cleared my plate. We didn't receive water refills until the end of dinner when we were waiting awkwardly to get our bill. The dinner was delicious but the server didn't return until he ran by while asking us if we wanted dessert and the server who brought dessert practically threw it on the table. For a place this nice and expensive I would have expected far better service. We finally flagged down the host to pay our bill, he comped the dessert but honestly by then we were just ready to leave. I was hoping this would be a cool new spot we could go to again but quite honestly I couldn't wait to leave and I won't go back and risk this type of treatment again. read more
