Guilford Hall: Profs & Pints I went to the Profs & Pints event that's hosted at Guilford Hall. So this is a 2 in 1 review. Food: Black Garlic Truffle fries: really great balanced flavors. My only complaint is the fries could've been a little crispier but that could be due to the long line of orders, it may have been waiting under the lamps because the kitchen is filling orders for both upstairs and downstairs. The truffle sauce was like an earthy, Smokey bbq sauce. I really enjoyed the flavor. Reuben Eggrolls - BOMB! So juicy, perfectly fried. I tried it with and without the house mustard sauce. It's good on its own but the mustard sauce kicks it up a notch. I've seen so many versions of cheesesteak Eggrolls, crab egg rolls, etc it's done to death in my opinion. But a REUBEN EGGROLL ?? amazing, that's the innovative thinking I like to see. And if you don't like grilled Reuben's .... Grow up House salad: I added grilled shrimp and the house creamy ceaser dressing. The shrimp was grilled perfectly, great flavors, not too salty or over seasoned. Just right. The dressing was a solid Caesar dressing and same for the salad itself. A solid house salad. I love the new menu design, so much more elevated and well thought out. If you're not a beer drinker or don't know a lot about beers, the menu provides you with recommended beer pairings for each item. They also have a new chef. I loved the old chef, I had so many personal faves on the menu so I was a little bit hesitant. But I'm intrigued about some of the new items they've added to the menu. And although I've only tried a few things tonight, I'd say so far so good. I'll be back. Ambiance: Guilford Hall is honestly a hidden gem. The venue and architecture is gorgeous. You have the main restaurant downstairs and the event space upstairs. They host so many different events as well so I would recommend checking out their events page. Service: I'd they the service was the only gripe I had. And I don't mean the servers themselves, They're great and work very hard. My gripe is with the lack of adequate staffing for the event. They only had two servers taking orders for a very full event. So unfortunately it took a long time to get your order taken. You can order at the bar but the bartenders always insist that you order at the table, which again can take forever, so people go to the bar ...... lol it's a losing game. So I'd say get there at the very beginning before the venue fills up and get your food order in or don't go on an empty stomach like I did Now for the event itself. Kashdan Topic: The Science of Curiosity He was a very personable and engaging, and had great delivery with the perfect balance of insight and humor. He incorporated break out sessions to encourage the audience to interact with the people at their tables. It's open seating so great for connecting with strangers. I loved his perspective. He had great presence and took a relaxed/humble yet confident approach to public speaking. A key take away for me is to remember to turn your curiosity inward without judgement. Like what would you if no one was watching and you weren't thinking about what other people think. Your initial impressions of people are often wrong and you close the door too quickly. Assuming perspective instead of getting someone's perspective because you're seeing this as a representation of one monolithic idea as opposed to understanding who they actually are. This was in relation to a question someone asked about Race and who defines what is vs what things could actually be. And how when we have more of these conversations instead of avoiding them that leads to a more open world with less isms, bullying, prejudice, etc. All in all a great night. I really wanted to like this place but the longer I think about it, the more I need to express my experience here. A couple of friends and I visited this place to attend a lecture (Profs & PInts) which was being held in their upstairs space. We entered and someone came over to greet us. I explained why we were there and that we wanted also to eat. (This is important later.). We were led to a nearby table. Menus were distributed and after a good while of not having anyone come back to the table, we tried to use their QR code system for ordering but that wasn't working. We flagged someone down and placed our order for drinks and food. Our food eventually showed up (not all at the same time) and my mixed drink was not delivered to the table until after my meal. All the while, we notice people going upstairs to the lecture and start getting worried about seating for us up there. One of us said something to a gentleman that appeared to be a manager of some sort and he came back and told us he had placed a 'reserved' sign on a table for us upstairs so we could finish our meal and not worry. Paying our check was also an issue because then the employee gave us an attitude when some of us paid through our phone and some did not. When we finally got upstairs, we realized that we could have gone up there to begin with, grabbed a table and had our meal upstairs as there was a full wait staff up there. Especially since we had made it known that was our intention. I may come back to this place for another lecture but I'll go directly upstairs. Came here with a vegan friend and I will say, there are not many vegan options so we decided to get Pommes Frites. When our server gave us our french fries it was an incredibly small portion which I somewhat expected as it was a side dish, but still not enough for even one person alone. The fries came with a lavender ketchup and garlic aïoli. I had to ask what the sauces were and if they were vegan, the server got a bit sassy and asked me ketchup is vegan, isn't it? I had to clarify that I was asking more so about the aïoli. Although the aïoli tasted good, way better than the lavender ketchup which I thought was a bit strange, he could've mentioned that the sauce was not vegan. Also, the fries were a bit cold when we got them. We did sit in the beer garden, where they are dog friendly. It did take some time for the servers to come out, so service was a bit slow. I also got a flight of 6 beers ($15) and noticed that there was some dirt on one of the rims of the glasses I had to ask for a new glass. Indoors is nice. The bathrooms are clean and gender neutral. The service was extremely slow for a Saturday. We had a server originally, he saw how large our party was after introducing himself (about 10 split between 2 tables) and then excused himself and we didn't have another server for another 30 minutes. Upon placing our order of just drinks with the new server, we waited another 45 minutes for them (we ordered 3 flights) which they mixed up and we had to reconfigure them. It wasn't busy in the restaurant at all and there was plenty of staff so we were perplexed why we were treated as such. Nevertheless the drinks were decent! We are new to town and wanted to check out this brewery which is close to where we live. The bar was full so we were seated at a table. Our server was friendly and attentive. They have a nice beer selection. I tried the dopplebock and my bf tried the Czech Ruby lager; we both enjoyed them. My bf ordered a burger and fries. I tried some of his fries which were really good. They were well prepared and seasoned and the best part was their unique cherry lavender ketchup. Very tasty. I tried a bite of his burger as well. It had a nice char and I liked the bun. It was a bit on the dry side for my preference, but he ordered it well done so that's to be expected. I'd probably go for medium or medium well. I also think a sauce to pull it together would be nice, but still a tasty and large burger. The inside is large with generous seating and I wandered out to the bier garden which was super cute with more seating. I bet Oktoberfest is a blast here. Stopped in the other night for dinner with my daughter. This is a very large and beautiful location with free street parking if you can find a spot. Beer hall German style vibe. Our waiter who was also the bartender was extremely nice but pulled thin between his tables and the bar. I decided to try the Chicken Schnitzel and my daughter got the chicken tenders. On the website they offer a kids menu but there wasn't any options on the actual menu. Which I don't know if is on a separate menu option but we weren't offered one. She ordered it anyway and it wasn't an issue. My schnitzel and her tenders looked and tasted exactly the same. Never had schnitzel like this and it just wasn't flavorful at all. It came with mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts. I asked to switch the brussel sprouts with asparagus. I was never told it would be an up charge so that was a surprise. Vegetable for vegetable switch I wouldn't think there would be. Also my plate came out with both vegetables instead of the mashed potatoes. When I brought it up he went back to the kitchen to say something and they had him come back out and say they were out and would I like fries instead. Why wouldn't that have been relayed to me to start with? Besides the bad food they do have a nice size merch section, I got a pint glass to take home for the collection but I honestly would never return. Very disappointed. read more

Guilford Hall Brewery reminds me of an upscale restaurant which happens to have beer. It really is a brewery though. They brew right on the premises. It is a spacious venue, with a bar, high tops and regular seating. The bathrooms are unisex, they are labeled "WC" like in Europe for water closet. The service was grand. My server Yvette was the best part of my visit here. So, if you like Stevie Wonder, you will love it here, because on my visit Saturday mid day, it was Stevie Wonder on repeat. The beer here is hit or miss. There were two beers which were absolutely awful, see beer notes below. Overall though, the beer was decent. I could drink here again, but would not go out of my way to find this place. The BEER: Conspiracy dark lager 4% ABV... I really like this dark lager, it is a totally all day crushable beer Hefeweizen 5.1% ABV... it is a hefe, good. Vienna 4.6% ABV... One note, just meh, a very average Vienna Lager?, the taste seemed not quite done, or slightly off, has a popcorn flavor, not good, diacetyl? British IPA 6.1% ABV... imagine an ESB, but hoppy with citrus notes, piney, finishes with a pepper bite. This is quite good. Czech Ruby Lager 4.7% ABV... nope, yuck, sounded good in theory, tasted awful Belgian Golden 8.5%... this is quite good. A perfect Belgian Golden. My favorite on this visit. So historically, Baltimore is known for craft beer, and in the 90s it was one of the only places to get craft beer. I would not recommend Guilford Hall Brewery if you want a great craft beer experience. Not sure how the food is, but there beers were quite average, with some exceptionally awful. read more

Parking can get a little crazy, especially if there's an event or a big crowd so keep that in mind. Mostly street parking. OMG we rented the Cigar and Whiskey Lounge for a birthday party with 30 people and had the MOST AMAZING TIME! Guilford went beyond! Brad, Marcus, and their team were incredible! The food was excellent and plentiful, and the beer/wine selections were fantastic. Having our own bartender and separate server was really nice. The spaces were comfortable, and since the weather was wonderful, Marcus reserved two tables for us to use in the outdoor public courtyard in front of our door. The rooms were bright and charming. My group had such a fabulous time, nobody wanted to leave! I had been to the tap room for dinner before, but this experience blew me out of the water. If you love good service, good food, and a variety of beers to choose from, I would highly recommend that you give Guilford Hall Brewery a try. In short, I had a train to catch, but I had a few hours to kill. I was hungry and needed a bit that was quick but enjoyable; I did a quick search and found Guilfords, which was just a few blocks away from the Amtrack station. I'm so glad I did. When I arrived, I was greeted by the friendliest host (a brother), who welcomed me in. From that moment on, the top-notch service was sustained and ongoing. I sat at the bar, and my bartender was gracious enough to let me try a few options before I made my selection. I went with an ale and grabbed some of the best wings I've had in a very long time. Of course, I had some sweet potato fries for gold measure. The sauce served over the crispy wings was out of this world. Looking at some of the other recent reviews about Guilford Hall, I am not if this was a one off day but I did not have the same experience as others did. To start, the hostess was great, she got us seated right away, granted there were only 3 tables filled up inside. Once we were seated, the waiter came by initially in minutes to collect our drink order. Then it all went DOWNHILL..... between getting our first drinks to the time I had to go up to him to let him know we were ready to order, nearly 25 minutes had passed. AWFUL! When I flagged him down, he didn't even seem to realize that he never came back to check on us and just said ok and almost annoyed in the moment. They definitely did not seem short staffed as I saw 2-3 staff at the bar and 4 on the floor for the handful of tables that were seated and the outdoor area only seemed to had 2 tables full when we walked back. The food was ok. The prices are higher than what I have paid at other similar places and the portions were small considering as well. I got the Jager schnitzel ($22) and the pork was pounded out so thin, it was dry but by the time we got the food, almost an hr had passed so I was too hungry to say anything. The pretzel was also underwhelming for it to be labeled "giant" as the top half was super thinned out. Overall, I would not go back here for those reasons and I am not confident in recommending this spot based on my experience. read more

The British Pale Ale was okay and the Berliner Weisse was so good. Because I love IPAs and sours there weren't a ton of beers for me to drink but the ones I did try were good. I was here for a private event in the Whiskey Room, which came with its own bar and two bartenders. Both bartenders were friendly and doing their best, but the wait for food was surprisingly long and the drinks were not great. If we wanted certain beers or a flight, we had to go to the main hall, and only cocktails could be made in the Whiskey Room. I assumed the main hall was busy, but it was actually empty. Most of the staff were sitting around eating and talking, and the manager, an older grey haired man, sat at a table on his laptop. Loved the Conspiracy Dark Lager (and totally my fault that I read the drinks menu as a pint and a half pint, so was not expecting the half liter that came when I ordered the small.) Service at the bar was slow, but it was busy, and they were still spot on and attentive. Table service was smooth, fast, and perfect and the food was excellent. The crab cake is Baltimore class, the salads and greens are fresh, the sausages are like they are from a farm (maybe they are local, they are super). Came here for the first time on Saturday and it was such a fun spot! They were celebrating Octoberfest and had different events going on throughout the day. We got the pretzel with cheese and the house mustard to start with and it was delicious and the perfect sharing size! For my meal I ordered the Guilford burger which I also enjoyed. Afterwards we went upstairs and they had a photo area set up and pumpkin/stein painting. They also had a big screen with a children's movie on to accommodate all the families that were there. I've ate here about once a year since it opened-for dinner a few times, a prof and pint lecture series and a happy hour meet up. Most recently I went for dinner on a Friday. Arrived with a friend at 6pm, we had a little wait before someone sat us, but our arrival felt hectic and many of the servers or hosts were frantically running around? After we sat down we used the QR code to order drinks right away and after 20 minutes a server came over to us and asked to take our order. We let them know we had already placed our order and ended up waiting another 15 minutes, at that time our other friend joined us and placed an order for a beer on their happy hour menu. We were wondering where our drinks were because our friend got a beer right away and our server had to ask us what we got then it was again us waiting for a while before we got our drinks. I ordered fried fish and fries and the portion was so small for $20. I also ordered the lavender ketchup for $1 and it was filled 1/4 of the way? The fries also were soggy and bland and the ketchup didn't help so when we got our drinks I asked if I could get some salt. The server was friendly however I never got the salt so I got tired of waiting and just ended up eating the fries. My friend got upset because their bill was wrong and when trying to resolve it nobody knew what to do. The service has always been slow, but the environment has been nice so I've given the place a chance numerous times. Now I'm thinking it's not worth it and I couldn't even make it a little better since nobody even came to our table to check up on us. I couldn't even fix things with salt since I never got it. Located on the edge of Remington, Guilford Hall is a literal diamond in the rough. When you first arrive, you are greeted by the towering wooden gate entry that opens up to the brewery's courtyard. The courtyard has ample outside seating if you want to enjoy your pints outdoors. Inside, you can tell the building has undergone an extensive renovation. Gorgeous hardwood floors, exposed brick and a dozen large biergarten style communal tables. They also have a large wooden bar that you can belly up to if you like. Service: 3/5. The staff at Guilford were very nice, however we felt the service piece was a bit lacking on our visit. My party of 5 arrived on a Sunday afternoon to a mostly empty brewery. We were seated immediately by the hostess and our server came over almost instantly to hand out menus and introduce, great start. However, after we gave our drink and food orders, we were not to see our server again for another 30 minutes. Guilford had around a half dozen staff members "working", but most were just hanging out around the bar. Eventually, we walked over to the bar to ask a employee to check in on our food, and fortunately it was ready. From this point forward, the service was better, but I feel one shouldn't have to remind the staff to tend to the customers, especially when it's not busy. Food/Drinks: 3/5. Guilford offers diners with a large array of elevated German bar food as well as a dozen or so in house beers. While the menu has alot of nice options for even the pickiest of eaters, the execution was only so-so. On my visit, my group ordered the burger, chicken paprikash, soft pretzel with beer cheese and pork schnitzel. Portion sizes were ok, though I expected slightly larger plates for the pork schnitzel and paprikash considering the $25+ price tags. The pretzel was excellent and the burger was also decent, with $15-20 price tags. On the beer front, we had their hefeweizen, berliner weisse, Baltimore pils and Guildford lager, with all of them being decent. At $7 a pint and 13 for a liter, this is pretty standard brewery pricing. Overall, everything we consumed at Guilford was satisfying, but unfortunately it is a forgettable experience, especially compared against the dozen or so other breweries in Baltimore doing amazing things. read more

Visiting Guildford Hall, for a beer only, 'Bmore self-made Brewery tour', we enjoyed the ambiance of the large outdoor beer garden; the covered picnic table areas, tucked away in the back alley, gave a very hole in the wall vibe. But some woes while visiting: -not really a casual bar/brewery set-up, as we weren't able to approach (or sit at) the bar areas, but were directed to dining tables, as the style of ordering was restaurant assigned waiter at table, scan the QR code for tap list. The woe about this set-up was the website's current tap list & in-person availability weren't updated, so many of the brews I attempted to select (&specifically went to try, listed on the website) were out. I opted for a crisp hefe & my friend the variety flight- drinks took a decent amount of time to arrive, and in the meantime 3 requests to varying staff for water went ignored. In addition, my friend ordered the beeramisu, which while had a bold yummy taste- was on the smaller side for the cost. Overall, a very average visit, nothing special about the beer; more of a "one & done" glad I tried it, enjoyed our visit, but wouldn't crave going again. read more

The Pierogies dish ($11) uses Frozen Mrs Ts Pierogies. You get 4 of them with onion gravy. The menu indicates the dish includes chives but I didn't receive these, though I saw other patrons being served dishes garnished with what looked like green onions on top. It wouldn't matter much anyways because the Pierogies are literally frozen from a box and taste like nothing anyway. They don't have chives in them. The food my partner ordered looked good so maybe the rest of the menu items are good. But damn. read more

The staff were friendly but our server seemed to have too many tables as he never came to ours to take our orders, we had to keep walking to the bar to get our Mimosas refills. The restaurant was clean and decorated like a typical beer themed restaurant. The brunch buffet was ok. The bacon was great but no other meal items stood out. I've been to other drag brunches and I feel like this one started late. It was a total of 4 performances, 5 if you include the MC. 3 of them were great (the MC being one of them. The star was a queen from RuPaul Drag race ... she gave the worse performance. I honestly can't believe a place like this exists right next to the infamous Copycat building but here we are... stately 15 foot wooden doors, castle-like chandeliers, exposed brick, and modern glass throughout. This place exists and it's in one of the most unfrequented corners of Greenmount West. I came for the giant soft pretzel but stayed for the incredibly friendly service. Seriously, as someone who doesn't really drink beer I felt at ease thanks to our server who patiently explained each item on the beer list and made informed recommendations based on what beers I normally like. They're not kidding when they say European fare with a Baltimore twist. You're not going to find frilly sours with copious amounts of fruit, or odd beer creations that taste more like candy. This place has your classic European style beers and some surprisingly delicious food. We ordered the beer flight which comes with a handful of their most popular brews (great for the indecisive folks out there - ahem... me), the caesar salad, the brussel sprouts without the bacon, the giant soft pretzel, and the french fries. Our favorites were the brussel sprouts, the dipping sauce that came with the french fries, and the giant pretzel with the cheese sauce (order extra cheese sauce, you won't regret it). My friend also ordered a cocktail so for those who refuse to drink beer, you'll still find something you like at their bar. Overall, the total came out to about $60 without tip - very reasonable for the amount of food we got, the atmosphere, and the quality of the service. I imagine this as a perfect place to bring out-of-towners who want to explore beyond the commercialization of the touristy Inner Harbor. They even have a heated patio out back.
