Crossbar is a great beer hall with a hidden speakeasy bar upstairs. I watched the World Cup Semi-Finals here before a concert at M&T Stadium, and the vibes were rich! First of all, I want to say that we're incredibly grateful this place has such an amazing manager. He was attentive, professional, genuinely cared about making things right, and he's the only reason we left with a somewhat positive impression. If it weren't for him, this would have been a terrible experience. I also want to mention that I don't usually leave negative reviews. I've worked as both a server and a bartender myself, so I know firsthand how difficult it can be to work in customer service. Because of that, I'm usually very understanding when mistakes happen. However, this experience was so unprofessional that I genuinely felt the need to speak up. It was honestly one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a bar. Unfortunately, the bartender, who I believe was named Mary H., completely ruined our evening. Besides bringing my order incorrectly, she seemed far more interested in entertaining her friends at the bar than paying attention to her customers. At one point, while joking around with them, she tried to spray one of her friends with what I hope was just water. Instead, she ended up spraying my husband and me. I was completely soaked, especially my back, because of what she apparently thought was a funny joke. What made the situation even worse was her reaction afterward. Instead of sincerely apologizing, she came over laughing and immediately told us it wasn't her fault because her friend had moved out of the way. She even asked us whether we thought it would have been okay if she had sprayed her friend instead. I didn't respond because my husband doesn't like confrontation, even though I was extremely upset. My husband simply told her, "If you want to spray your friend, that's your business, but don't spray us." Only then did she seem to realize how upset we were and tried to smooth things over by offering us shots, which we politely declined. Her behavior throughout the evening was so inappropriate and unprofessional that it honestly made us wonder whether she was impaired in some way. I obviously can't know that for a fact, but it was the only explanation that came to mind based on how she was acting. I also overheard other customers expressing similar concerns about her behavior, which made it seem like we weren't the only ones who had this impression. Overall, our experience with the bartender was extremely disappointing and unprofessional. It's honestly shocking that a place with such an outstanding manager would allow someone with such poor customer service and judgment to represent the business behind the bar. The manager deserves a tremendous amount of credit for doing everything he could to turn the situation around. His professionalism, kindness, and genuine concern completely changed what otherwise would have been an awful night. Without him, this review would have been much worse. read more

I've been on a beer garden kick lately and decided to check this one out. Ambiance: I really like the vibe. I felt like I was outside, but I was actually inside. I liked the tree in the middle. service: my friend and I sat down and waited for about 15 minutes before we had to flag down a server for assistance. There was a guy sitting at the bar that appeared to work there, looked at us and said nothing. He was too busy talking to a customer. Once we finally got a server she took our order. After we got our food, she only checked on us once. My friends and I went down to Baltimore for the night to have a fun weekend. The line was very long, but that wasn't the issue. It was a good vibe somewhat inside. I've been paying with my card throughout the whole night and later on through the night I cannot find my card and I checked my phone for the transactions. It hasn't been used in about 40 minutes so I knew no one had it my friend proceeded to go up to the bar and ask if they had my card and the bartender said " I don't know what she did with it. I gave it back." I then proceeded to go up and ask, and they also said they'd have not had it. I proceeded to cry and look all over the place on the floor and finally somehow I went back up again and asked do they have my card and it is not with me and they did. Quiet beer and waffle-fries on a Thursday afternoon. We dropped in because...because it's a German biergarden! There is the standard bench-table seating, a bar, and an upstairs patio in the large, tall, vaulted ceiling room of the light and German-decor-filled biergarden that helps provide the environment you expect. We got a 1/2 liter each, and shared the waffle fries with cheese fondue - nice! The bartender was nice and chatted with us for a bit about nearby food, which we took the advice of and got some food from Abbey Burger just down the road - try the special seasonal meats! Had a fun time at trivia night (Wednesday). We got the huge pretzel with cheese, it was soo warm and the cheese was wonderful. We also ordered the boot size of the Hefeweizen, which was a pretty good beer! The atmosphere is great, has benches that are very casual and we sat by an indoor tree . Crossbar advertised all day New Year's Day brunch but was woefully unprepared, with no tea or coffee and waits in excess of an hour for food. When we sat down, we were the only occupied table in the place and by the time we ordered, there were two other tables. Our pretzel appetizer took about half an hour to come out, which wasn't a huge deal because we were still waiting on one more but forty minutes after ordering our meals and no update from our server, I flagged her down to ask. At this point, I'd noticed that while it was taking everyone a while to get their food, other tables that had ordered after us were receiving food. The server said she'd check on the food as if it had not occurred to her until I asked and when she returned, explained that there was only one person working in the kitchen and they were pretty backed up. Well, that sucks, but don't advertise a bottomless brunch on a holiday and then not staff your place or order adequate supplies! She offered to comp drinks for us but at this point, we wanted to leave but had been waiting so long, we were invested. She said our food was next up but then we watched two more tables get served before our food FINALLY came out, over an hour after we ordered it. One would hope after all that, the food would be great. Nope. What they called a "freshly baked sweet potato biscuit with house made pepper jelly" was actually a barely defrosted roll with bright red jelly that was probably not house made. The breakfast pretzel, "... topped with blackberries, cinnamon, powdered sugar and served with melted butter, maple syrup and house made berry compote" was dry and cherry and accompanied by maple syrup and blackberries and that was it. My friends and I had a terrible experience at this bar. Bar staff confused our group with another group of girls causing problems in the bathroom and rather than give us a minute to explain the mixup, the male security guard proceeded to look in on my friends while they were actively using the bathroom. When my friend tried to cover his eyes so he couldn't see one of the girls exposed, he moved her hands away and continued to watch them until they left the bathroom stall. Then, again refusing to clarify it was not my friends they were looking for, the security guard kicked them out. When we went to the manager to report this disgusting behavior, he gave a half assed apology and basically said what do you want me to do about it. This is not the first time we have experienced problems and safety issues at this bar, and after this, we will never be going back. Do not go here unless you want to feel violated by the security and screamed at by bar staff for something you didn't even do. read more

Crossbar has a really nice atmosphere and is a wonderful place to hang out. I went there with another couple and had a great time. They did a really nice job in renovating the place, making it into an "urban Biergarten" with games and a festive atmosphere. They do have a decent number of German beers on tap, which I just love. I made a mistake because I ordered a full liter of König Ludwig without first tasting it. It's one of my favorite beers, but a problem in the United States with it is that is has to be imported. So, it's not always fresh. Since the place is a German Biergarten, I (falsely) assumed that it had to be fresh because there should be a high turnover. Unfortunately, it still wasn't stale, but it wasn't fresh either. The bartender was willing to give me something else, but I felt that it was my mistake partially for not sampling it first. The staff members are very friendly. At least three of them approached me and chatted with me. It's a fun place overall. However, they just were not adequately trained in beer by the management. They couldn't answer questions about the beer. The taps could also be better maintained. So, 4 Stars instead of 5 because, as a beer place, they should have better beer. read more

Crossbar is the hotly anticipated new German beer garden in Fed Hill, not to be confused with the other new German beer hall in Fed Hill. I don't know what the difference is between a beer hall and a beer garden. I suppose a garden is supposed to be open air, and there are high ceilings, wide windows open to the street, and plenty of room. It was a hard fight to open this place at all, and I suppose some of the compromises are evident but they make the most of what they have. The main room is wide and bright with many long tables around the room and large TVs hung high on the walls. There is also a ping pong table in front of one of the open air windows facing the sidewalk, and we watched many a ball lost to the Cross Street traffic while we were there. There is a bar against the back wall, upstairs seating, and two bars in side rooms if massive socialization is not your thing. This all adds up to a fun and welcoming environment where anyone can enjoy a drink. As first timers we weren't sure if we should just grab seats or see a hostess, but two casually dressed women did turn out to be staff and directed us to sit anywhere. We opted for a long table centrally located (it should be noted that the main hall is on a slope which is more pronounced at some tables than others.) Early on a weeknight we had our end all to ourselves, but at busy times I'm sure you'll be shoulder to shoulder with other patrons which is entirely the point. They have great beers available, many German drafts as well as local favorites. Beers are sold by half liters, liters, and great big boots if you're desperate to swim in your beer glass. The liters are huge enough as is, a giant beer glass that my wife honestly had trouble lifting (she figured she was going to have two anyway.) She was happy that they had Schofferhoffer Grapefruit on tap, I stuck with a half liter of a Dark Weisse just in case I didn't like it. I shouldn't have worried as it was excellent and German beer is about as far from a lousy IPA as you're likely to get, but I did opt for a Dunkel for my second which was also great. We split an order of the Schnitzel Fingers to start. The paper menus were not very descriptive, but I guess we shouldn't have been surprised that this was Chicken schnitzel, flattened breaded and deep fried. The breading was great, and I think the flattened sections contributed to some pieces being overdone and a little dry in sections, but at least it was an actual schnitzel and did come with an excellent curry mustard for dipping (and ketchup.) We were interested in trying some of the traditional German entrees, such as Spaetzl, Sour Beef and Dumplings, and the Pork Chop, but we opted to each get a sausage instead. They come with either Onions and Bacon or Sauerkraut and Mustard according to the menu, but our waitress explained we could mix and match any of those (we stuck with S & M.) My wife's spicy sausage had a snap to it, but I was surprised at how tender my Bratwurst was (a sign of freshness?) I'm interested to know if German sausages are traditionally served on a bun, but who cares. This is a fun place to go to enjoy some great beer with food you don't get everywhere. read more

As landscape architect'y folk, we were initially drawn in by the cool exterior and seemingly spacious loft'y interior complete with a big ass focus tree named ______ (ffs I can't freaking remember now but I'll update when it comes back!) but the real awesomeness is found inside. Good beer, even better pretzels, but the best is the manager/bartender who served us. She was friendly, sincere, funny and made the whole experience memorable. The atmosphere in this open-air Biergarten is superb from it's picture perfect yellow picnic tables to it's gorgeous vaulted glass ceiling, it's any instagrammer's dream. My friends and I stopped in after a day in the city for a late lunch. I ordered the giant pretzel (with beer cheese, obviously) and the warm potato salad. Let me tell you, it was incredible. The pretzel was perfectly salted and doughy and not to mention, HUGE! It was seriously bigger than my face. It came with a delicious mustard dipping sauce and I added the beer cheese for a dollar extra... it was so worth it. The warm potato salad was perfection. It was packed with bacon and caramelized onion and garnished with fresh green onion on top. It was sweet, yet savory, and oh so tasty. Tried this place for the first time last night and had a great experience! We showed up with a group of 12 people and didn't have too much trouble finding a table at 6pm (on a Friday). It was definitely packed by 7 though! It's was a fun atmosphere, and there are several "spaces" to hang out in. My only complaint would be that it was very loud, and a little hard to carry a conversation without shouting. Service was great. One waitress was able to handle our whole party and keep everyone's tabs separate and correct, even with all of us moving around! She was very quick, and was also knowledgeable about the beer selection and able to give good recommendations. There was a variety of German beers and a few local "hoppier" brews on draft. They offered a half liter, liter, or 2 liter boot (in an actual boot shaped glass, which was fun!). I didn't see any prices on the beer menu, which was mildly annoying because they did turn out to be pretty expensive (due to size, I think). We were told it was a dollar off drafts for happy hour until 7, but never did find out the full price. We tried a couple of the different food offerings, and we're pretty satisfied across the board. Pretzel was huge and fresh with some yummy cheese and mustard dipping sauce. My friend ordered one of the sausages, which she commented was not spicy as advertised. This is one of the only German eateries in the Baltimore area, so my friend and I were excited to try the food since she is German and we both love German food. Unfortunately, this place was a big letdown with the food. It seems this is more of a place to solely drink beer and have good drinking vibes. I loved the way the "restaurant" looked, but I will say that I noticed the tree had a great considerable amount of dust compiled on it (I have really bad allergies and asthma), and it needed to be cleaned. Some of the benches for the communal seating need to be replaced because they almost tip over if you sit on the end of one or try to stand up from one. We went during a time when I believe it was on a game day, but it was still early, so there were not a lot of people. We had the Schnitzel Fingers - it was okay, but it tasted very dry. I had the Haus Grilled Cheese - The first two bites were okay, but it quickly became inedible; there is a difference between something being cheesy and something being so decked out in melted solid cheese that you're almost choking on it (it was the latter). My friend had the Weisswurst - she said it was okay but could've been cooked better. One of the last points that I will say is that the ordering system needs to be improved. We walked in, and no one greeted us, seated us, or told us how to order food (again, this was our first time here). We soon realized that we walk up to the bar to order food. I asked for their loaded fries for my friend and me to share and sample. The bartender asked if we wanted beer cheese, and I said yes. He also asked if my friend wanted any toppings on her Weisswurst, she said no, but she did want sauerkraut on the side. She ended up getting sauerkraut put on her Weisswurst (not as a side), and the loaded fries came out plain. I told the bartender that the fries were supposed to be loaded. He came back and gave me fries with no side of bier cheese, and he said to me that they were out of pico de gallo. Before I could say anything, he hurried and left to go back to tending the bar. We didn't get what we paid for because if we had known they didn't have the pico de gallo or bier cheese, we wouldn't have gotten it. The bartender didn't even offer us anything for getting our order wrong or for the inconvenience of them being out of items (of course, we had to pay full price still). What we did get was unseasoned yet very salty fries with a big dollop of sour cream and shredded (not even melted) cheese - not worth the money. I hated that I paid for the food in advance and left a tip because I didn't enjoy the food or like the service. The one bartender and one cook were probably doing their best. But there isn't even a service because outside of grabbing your food, you do everything else. Even when I tried to get to-go boxes, I had to go to the bar, and one guy cut in front of me. In the future, they should have each table numbered and make it where people can purchase food from their table and put their name and table number. They should also have a separate table with cups and a big water dispenser for those who want or need water instead of them having to go to the bar to refill on water. That way everyone who goes to the bar is going solely for beer. I feel like they should probably condense their menu also and keep to and try to perfect the pretzels. I mean clearly there is an issue if 30 minutes after opening on a game day (not crowded), they don't have components of food items. Obviously the big draw here is beer but they should probably get rid of their bad-quality throw away food menu items. I gave them one star because the food is reasonably priced. I am just happy that my friend talked me out of getting us the Oktoberfest platter. I would have been very upset if we paid $55 for that and got the quality of food we had received. For a German Bierhalle, their German beer selection is awful. They've got Stiegl Radler, which is from Austria, along with Miller and Leinenkugel. I got a Warsteiner and my girlfriend got a Hofbrau. My Warsteiner tasted very old. I asked the girl behind the bar if something was wrong with their keg, but she just kind of shrugged her shoulders and walked away. The food was decent, but I probably won't come back. They should take note at what Das Bierhalle in Parkville is doing. Schofferhofer, not Stiegl + their beer tastes fresh. Oh! Ventured into Crossbar for the first time after walking by it on a regular basis and I thought it was a great to spot to get drinks with friends. Tons of seating and great A/C which everyone can appreciate during the hot and humid Baltimore summer! I wish there were more games. There is one ping pong table and a giant Jenga set downstairs but I think the bar would thrive with additional games! I noticed a pinball machine upstairs but it was powered off. Didn't try a pretzel this time as I stopped by after dinner but will definitely swing by again and hopefully get lucky with snagging the Jenga set or getting a game of ping pong in! read more

This bar is one of the coolest bars in Federal Hill. The owners bought 3 rowhomes, knocked out the interior walls, and put in a glass roof, so it always feels like you're outside! The trees inside don't hurt either. There was plenty of room inside to sit and grab a drink, and you can get giant 2L stines and boots of beer to get the bang for your buck. There's usually always a game on as well. My favorite part, though has to be the ping pong table that is free to use right in front. The atmosphere here can't be beat! read more

Located just North of Cross Street Market, this new addition to Federal Hill brings a whole different feel from the other bars in the area. Crossbar is a beer garden, and when you first step into the expansive space, with long tables, plenty of seating, and multiple areas, you almost feel like you're still outside. The abundance of windows and natural light, pair with the high ceilings and exposed beams to create an atmosphere unlike any other place in the area. The ceiling is dominated by a *massive* fan, that keeps air circulating well, and will hopefully keep the temperature reasonable in the summer. They serve a variety of beers including German and local draughts, as well as domestic and German bottles. If you're getting a draught, you can select from 1/2 liter (~16.9oz), liter (~33.8oz), and 2 liter (~67.6oz) 'boots' ("it's the bubble!"). There is also a menu of snacks and other German fare (including giant pretzels). All in all the place was wonderful. The service was fantastic and friendly, beer was great, and the food was delicious. I'd love to check it out on a busy night and see how well it runs, but from my first experience I feel like this is going to be a popular spot that's definitely worth checking out. read more

Found this place off a whim. This is a newly Biergarten in Federal Hill. It's a huge place inside. They have a ping pong table which is pretty cool. I had the soft big pretzel with cheese and a German beer. Both were good. The menu could have been better in my opinion. I've been to other Biergartens and the menu have been better, more options. This is a good place if you never been to a Biergarten or just in the area. read more

Went here tonight with some friends and had a great time. Really casual atmosphere with a large selection of German draft beers. Nice open space at the bottom bar with tables and bar games scattered throughout. Upstairs was a little less crowded but a lot chillier with the AC running full-blast. Will be back soon! read more
