This unpretentious Chinese takeout restaurant is just what it is. The counter lady is friendly and efficient taking food orders and the kitchen cooks are fast and very skilled with woks and sauces. Everything we ate was seasoned well and pipping hot. My favorite is large pork fried rice with very generous amount of Chinese bbq pork. We also ordered a lot of Sesame chicken, General Tao's chicken with broccoli, Beef chow Fun, large Wonton soup are all fond reminder of collage takeout food. First time ordering Mo Po Eggplant lunch special with Pork Fried rice, egg roll with small wonton soup was a success. Unfortunately the people that cooked and ran the place retired. New food is much lower quality. Spring rolls only had cabbage and carrots, Lo mein was tasteless, hot beef with mushrooms- very watery and beef very chewy. They even took pork lo mein off the menu and have several other items crossed out as well. Sad as this used to be my go-to Chinese restaurant for decades, Now the only one left in Port but I doubt I'll go back if their food doesn't improve. read more

Not what it used to be. I ordered chicken with vegetables and chicken low mein. These are basic dishes, don't know how they went so wrong. The chicken has a mushy textures as if it was put into a food processor and molded back together. The lo mein was not flavorful and had almost no chicken. Walked in and placed a take out order. There are a few tables should you decide to eat in the restaurant. Food was prepared quickly. Got home and it was still very hot. There was a generous amount of pineapple in the sauce, chicken was golden brown and it was delicious. The egg roll was fantastic too. read more

Ordering was an adventure since I had to repeat myself 3 times to make sure they understood my order. We ordered a number of entrees and appetizers. The mei fun was totally bland, the Szechuan beef was not spicy at all and the egg rolls were blah. They also forgot to include our pork fried rice which we paid for. And they only take cash! Archaic for today's restaurant businesses. I don't know how they have a 4.0 rating on yelp. I will not be going back. read more

Tried to give them another chance. Last time I ordered (2 weeks ago) all the shrimp in house special lo-mein, special wonton soup and chicken shrimp combo were all mushy, mealy and tiny. When I called they said sorry will make it up to you next time. Ordered again yesterday and mentioned the above issue and was told oh yes, I remember, will take care of you and was told not to order any shrimp dishes. In order was steamed vegetable dumplings and the special wonton soup - no shrimp and several other dishes - order was repeated back to me correctly. As they were packing order I again confirmed vegetable dumplings and they said yes. Total was $82 and nothing was added to order. When I mentioned the instance above they first acted like they didn't know about it and than took $2 off the total. To make it worse when arrived home and started to eat - no noodles for the soup, special wontons had a brown sauce on it - not suppose to for the soup and the dumplings were pork. Poor attitudes, poor service and poor food. Three strikes and they are out of our ordering rotation. So BEWARE! read more

Friendly people, fast service, and perhaps the best pork fried rice in town. I haven't tried their other fried rice varieties, but I would guess they're every bit as good. They don't add the unnecessary and detracting carrots and peas that seem to be standard at other places. And it needs no condiments, either (at least IMO). Sheer perfection. read more

Bad tasting food, hot & sour soup was very liquidy and was lacking taste, basically tasted nothing as it should. I also ordered hunan beef, meat was tasteless and overall food was not delicious to say the least. Also, this is the first place that I've ever been to told me when calling that they don't deliver.. every Chinese food I ever ate at did. Gum How Kitchen is one of those little "hole in the wall" restaurants, with good food and nice staff. They do not take credit cards, do not deliver, & only have a few tables, but they more than compensate with low prices and tasty food, cooked to order. If you question their cleanliness, just look over the counter, they cook in their plain sight. I've eaten here for years and until I move, I will continue to eat here. I love this Chinese place. Granted, it's not really a sit down place (there are tables but it's not that nice inside), they only take cash, and it's probably full of MSG BUT the food is great. Really great. And the prices are reasonable. My go-tos are the chicken and broccoli, chicken fried rice, and wonton soup. The brown sauce is great. The chicken fried rice has a bunch of shredded onion that makes it savory and wonderful. And the pork in the wontons is high quality and tastes very flavorful. Having been living in the area, I've been a big fan of Gum How. A standard chinese menu that is reasonably priced along with a fast and friendly service makes this a definite choice when one wants to take a break from cooking at home. I'm a big fan of the curry chicken with onion, along with their shredded beef. Also the vegetarian hot and sour soup (not on menu, but can be made to order) is great as well... Overall, great food prepared quick makes this a spot not to be neglected on the North Shore... Drawbacks include, No Delivery and No Credit Cards. OK Updating again. After trying just about every other Chinese place in town We went back to Gum How. It was very good as it was before. Maybe they just had a bad week or something. I will say you have to ask for mustard, duck sauce, and if you want extra of something like hoisin for your moo shoo you probably wont get it. They are really cheap with that stuff. Im updating my review because the last two times we ordered it was not very good at all. Very greasy and the taste was not the same.
