My sister got dim sum from Ming's Tasty Restaurant for our family of eight, ordered and delivered via Uber Eats. For takeout dim sum, it was pretty dang good. We had most of the staples and everyone liked the food, from the grandparents on down to the grandkids. I found the food to be quite authentic and tasty, so Ming's Tasty gets five Yelp stars from me. Just like rest of the comments- once of the best dim-sum spot in the town. Lines get crazy but it also goes quick. We were there for brunch on Saturday and we waited good 45 minutes until we got our table to sit down. We were so excited to eat that I didn't even took all the pictures. We got bunch of different dishes and everything tasted absolutely delicious. It may not have the carts, but Ming's is the best dim sum in Oakland. Every item on the menu is high quality but still affordable. There's often a little wait outside, but service is efficient so the line moves quickly. My favorite dishes are the variety of things-stuffed-with-things, like the stuffed eggplant, the lotus leaf rice, the tofu skin, and the dumplings. I was on a grocery shopping run and read about Ming's Sui Mai. I had lunch with a friend of mine at another restaurant in Chinatown before we did our shopping. We both ordered one dish of Sui Mai to go so we could try it out. My wife and I actually liked the taste, texture and flavor. The dish includes 4 Sui Mai for $7.99 but the menu shows $6.45 for the dish so a bit confused on the price difference. We plan to go back but dine in next time so we can try the other many dishes. Based upon the Sui Mai, this is definitely worth trying out for Dim Sum. I forgot to take pictures of the Sui Mai but I did take pictures of the menus and restaurant. You can taste the freshness of the dishes and it really shows. Their service and turnaround is relatively quick and efficient. We ordered the black bean pork spare ribs, chicken feet, siu mai, shrimp dumplings, meat-stuffed snow bun, shrimp rice rolls, fried turnip cake, and fried stuffed meat dumplings. I think the fillings for both were excellent with a lot of shrimp provided and not a ton of filler. I think they could do better and get the fifth star by not oversteaming the dishes. Most of the wrappers were way too soft and starting to fall apart. My girlfriend particularly liked the fried pumpkin pastries -- crispy and not too sweet with great chewy texture from the glutinuous rice and pumpkin combo. To be honest, I don't know everything we ordered because a friend frequents here a few times a month, so she did all the ordering, but I do know some things we had. We also had rice noodle rolls with shrimp and tea as much as you want. I'm missing a few things here, but you get the drift--we stuffed our faces. We have been to Ming's Tasty Restaurant a few times now and it's an easy choice whenever we are nearby Oakland Chinatown. Being a popular local spot, we often had to wait before we got seated. At one time, we had to share one of the big round tables with another party. Ambiance is typical for a dim sum restaurant. We have tried a variety of items and among those that stood out were the Snowy Baked Pork Buns, Pork and Shrimp Dumpling (Siu Mai), Sticky Rice and Minced Pork in Lotus Leaf, Rice Noodle Roll with Shrimp, and Ham Sui Gok (Deep-Fried Meat Dumpling). Whether steamed or fried, the food came out delicious. Our favorite had always been the baked buns and they might be everyone's too because they tend to sell out. This place has been on my to-try list for years and I finally made it here with my family on New Year's Eve 2024. We arrived at around 10:30am, and as we walked up, the first thing I noticed were the boarded-up windows - a sad reminder of the civil unrest from a few years ago. Once inside, we were greeted by one of the servers and she told me to put my name down on the waitlist. The interior was clean and bright, and decorations were non-existent. It didn't take long for a booth to open up. After we sat down, the same server came by to take our tea order. Ordering was done on a paper menu. We ended up getting 11 items. Prices ranged from $4.70-$7.20, which were reasonable. All items were made to order and started to arrive item by item in 10 minutes. Overall, I was impressed by the quality of the steamed and fried items. They were freshly made in-house and not leftovers from the day before. The only item I didn't like was the stir-fried glutinous rice. It was precooked and then stir-fried, which was not the authentic way of making it. Service was very good. The staff was friendly, helpful, and efficient. They checked on us and refilled our tea multiple times without asking. The total, with T/T, was about $83. Out of all the restaurants that offer dim sum in Oakland Chinatown, this is probably the best one. The food here is delicious, and the pricing is reasonable. I will return. 4 stars. Their menu selections are great. Since the weather is on the cool side, nothing is better than to have a huge bowl of chicken porridge to stay warm. (Comfort food to fill my tummy.) I usually order shrimp dumplings (har gow). Yummy! I don't remember the last time I had pan fried turnip cake (lo bok go). The same goes for the deep fried taro turnover. The chicken porridge is flavorful with hints of shredded ginger. I could not finish the porridge. Then I forget to order the doughnut stick (jao yao till) to go with the porridge. The shrimp dumplings were on point, and they were actually tasty and better than the ones I get from Tao Yuen. The pan fried turnip cake were melt in the mouth smooth and absolutely the bomb. Definitely the best turnip cake I have ever had. The chrysanthemum tea is the perfect beverage for what I have eaten - soothing, mellow, a delicate flowery flavor. The restaurant space is small. Guesstimate of the capacity for seating: approximately 40 people. I have to admit I definitely enjoy the food. Service is a 3.5 star rating. On a Friday afternoon, this restaurant was packed with customers ranging from solo eaters to large families. For our group of five, we put down our names and were able to be seated within 10 minutes. The tables and chairs are sorted in the restaurant to maximize the space. My wife and I regularly visit Ming's Tasty to use our $15 monthly Uber Eats credit through our Amex card. Without fail, we always order the same thing -- and it's consistently a solid 4 out of 5 for us: the salted fish claypot rice with added spare ribs for $3.45, which brings the total to $21.54. Pick-up, however, is always chaotic. There's rarely any parking nearby, so you're likely going to end up double-parking in front of the restaurant. Inside, it's packed with delivery drivers crowding the counter waiting for orders, alongside dine-in guests waiting for a table. It's honestly a pretty terrible pick-up and dining experience -- cramped, stressful, and noisy. But the food is solid. The claypot rice is impressively crispy, even after a 15-minute drive. You get a generous layer of golden, crackly rice at the bottom. That said, the topping-to-rice ratio is a little underwhelming compared to other spots. For the price, you could find better value, but it still hits the spot. I've never dined in for dim sum, but based on the atmosphere, it doesn't look especially inviting. The space is crowded and chaotic, and there's a sense that everyone's eyeing your table while you eat. Ming's Tasty doesn't really work for casual dim sum -- that's what Tao Yuen down the street is for -- and it doesn't quite deliver on fancier dim sum either, which Peony Seafood Restaurant at Renaissance Plaza covers. If you ever want to give downtown Oakland Chinatown a proper try, then Ming's Tasty must be one of the top spots you gotta bookmark. As an unofficial dim sum connoisseur, this place is probably at the top of my list of best traditional dim sum in East Bay. While it doesn't have the carts that most of us might have grew up with back in the 90s or 2000s, taste is king. This place like much of Downtown Oakland Chinatown, has seen better days when it comes to infrastructure, but as many people on the page have mentioned, don't let looks deceive you. The inside is pretty unassuming with a couple of tables deep in the restaurant with minimal lighting that gives that feeling of a SF or NYC chinatown hole-in-the-wall that caters to mostly elderly folks. There is always a front circular table with a worker setting up menus, take-away boxes, and bags and sometimes a little kid is there minding their business - so you know it's gonna be good. We mostly have done to-go and basically anything you order is gonna smack. Some of those include below: Har Gow (shrimp dumpling): 5/5 great ratio of filling to skin, but smaller than a place like Tao Yuen (which has giant har gow but way too thick wrapping) Siu Mai (pork dumpling): 5/5 really luscious and bouncy meat with thin wrapping and fish roe. I really like the slightly more sesame-oil-forward flavor of the pork. Among the best siu mai you can get at takeout (only better one I have had is Dim Sum House in San Lorenzo) Crispy Shrimp Cheung Fun (rice roll): 1000/5 by far their best item they offer. Very few dim sum offerings match the perfection of crispy, silky meaty contrast that this dish has. Deep Fried Taro Cake w/ Pork: 5/5 absolutely love the flavor combo here with the slightly gritty taro that is fried so well with the pork inside that is like a different, better version of a bao. Turnip Cake: 4/5 really good and filling. not super crispy but a good amount of meat bits mixed in and great value. Black Bean Steamed Pork: 4/5 great flavor good amount of meat. Lastly, the service has always been great for me, with the lady at the front sometimes remembering me coming there and even taking out the order for me while I was waiting in my car taking a call. I live in Oakland & wanted to bring dim sum over to my friends' house in Danville on Saturday at 10am. Ming's was one of few open early enough (9am) & was the most highly rated. I looked at their menu, called in my order, then picked it up 20 minutes later. It was ready & I was out the door in about a minute. Drove 30 minutes, busted out the dim sum & it was still very hot to the touch ... & the best dim sum I've had in a long time. We had pork & shrimp dumplings (siu mai), shrimp dumplings (har gor), steamed BBQ pork buns (char siu bao), steamed egg yolk custard buns (these are bao with custard filling, not dan tat/Hong Kong egg tarts) & sponge cake. Ming's looks a little sketchy from the outside because of graffiti though the inside is clean & efficient. Tao Yuen has been the standard for takeout dim sum & Chinese food in Oakland Chinatown for many years. Ming's dim sum is far better ... I'll be going back soon! ;) read more
