I went to Oakland Chinatown to pick-up some groceries with a friend of mine. We decided to have lunch in Chinatown and saw Ying Kee. I ordered green beans with pork over steamed rice. My buddy ordered Shrimp Won Ton Mein. My rice plate was delicious, tasty gravy, soft pieces of pork and fresh semi-crunchy green beans. My buddy liked his shrimp won ton mein soup with egg noodles and bean sprouts. I tried one of the shrimp won ton. I like that the shrimp was minced into the meat and had good flavor. I used to eat at King Wah back in the day but sadly they closed over several years ago. This was one of the 3 places my mom and I would frequent whenever she comes to Oakland Chinatown shopping for groceries. The owners and servers are friendly and quick with service. It's not exactly a hole in the wall type vibe but it is a semi small restaurant compared to others in Oakland. It feels homey in a sense even though it is a bit run down. I usually order the Half Shrimp Dumpling & Half Mushroom Dumpling Soup without noodles. ($12-15) Usually comes with 8-10 large dumplings and it is more than enough for 1-2 people. The lady was on the phone, and she waved me in and told me to sit anywhere. The interior is outdated and a bit of a dive. I could tell this was a legit chinese restaurant because there were no forks on the tables. I ordered Wor Won Ton Soup, Potstickers, and hot tea. Service was quick and attentive. I was served Seafood Wor Won Ton Soup. Price $13.50. Just one look told me I should of ordered something else. Maybe I should of asked for noodles? Not much for $13.50. Maybe 5 dumplings, regular broccoli, fish cakes, fish balls, and some pieces of fish. The potstickers looked exactly like the frozen ones I got from Amazon Fresh. Total bill: $21. Will I return? My wife, my sister-in-law, and I decided to have lunch at this restaurant today (June 24, 2026). We were directed to a booth when we arrived, but the used dishes had not been removed from the table. We waited several minutes before we asked the waiter to clear the table. The waiter cleared the table but did not wipe the food debris off the table. We had to ask the waiter to wipe the table clean. We waited several more minutes before the waiter came by to wipe the table. We ordered wonton soup, soup dumplings, and beef chow -fun. The waitress repeated the order to us to confirm. The waitress brought over the wonton soup and soup dumplings shortly; I waited for my beef chow fun. After about 30 minutes, we asked the waitress about my chow fun. She went into the kitchen and then came out to tell me my order was being "prepared." Another 15 minutes went by; my wife and my sister-in-law finished their lunch and my order still had not arrived!!! We told the waitress to cancel my beef chow fun order. As we sat, talked, drank our last drop of tea, and got ready to leave, my order of chow fun finally arrived!!! We had to remind the waitress we cancelled the chow fun order!! There was no apology from the waitress for screwing-up our order. The unisex bathrooms appeared neat BUT there is a sign in the bathroom directing patrons not to flush toilet tissue in the toilet bowl; the sign told patrons to put soiled toilet tissue into an open garbage bin that did not have a plastic liner or lid (this is extremely unsanitary!). I would have my mind examined before I will return this restaurant!! I am not sure if there was a staffing shortage or if the restaurant is simply disorganized!!! We ordered: 1) tofu and mushrooms and bok choy, only disappointment was how few mushrooms there were (maybe 6 pieces) 2) eggplant with pork - not bad if you like eggplant, good portion of pork 3) salt and pepper fish - tasty but only about 12 pieces of fish Order included house soup which was broth with some carrots and a pieces of oxtail. Broth could use a little more flavor for my test. For $38.99 (not including tax) - it's not a bad deal. The menu has quite a few options and we had a tough time picking 3 dishes. We cooked our own rice to supplement. We would probably try it again and pick some other dishes. I come here pretty frequently and I usually the chao chow ho fun. One reason I come here if the low price and nice staff. It's not too busy in here so you won't feel rushed and can enjoy your food at a slow pace without needed to rush. The portions are also pretty big for the price. You would probably pay around $15+ anywhere else. However, you do get what you pay for. The soup is bland and doesn't have any flavor, you have to season it yourself with the condiments at the table. Other than that the rest of the dish is flavored and delicious, you just need to season the soup yourself. The variety of meat balls give different textures with the fish ones being softer and the beef balls having more of a bite to them. My favorite part of this dish is of course the kidney. It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea but it's delicious to me. It's not metallic at all and has a nice bite to it. I would recommend this dish for sure! read more

It's been a few weeks since I've eaten here and still crave it. We got some sort of stir fried lamb (forgot the official name they call it). That was pretty good. We got a bowl of rice to share. We finished it all! The tea was lukewarm, but the tea pots they use are pretty old. It is what it is, given how old this restaurant is. Update (June 2023): I'm so disappointed in the service of this restaurant and the quality of food. It used to be so good. The shrimp dumplings were plump with shrimp and tasted really fresh; now it has a weird smell, taste, and texture to it. When we brought it up to the server, she just apologized and walked away. We didn't get a new bowl of shrimp dumplings or even the food taken off our bill. The prices have gone up and quality down. My grandparents love coming here to eat so I decided to tag along with them today for lunch. I grew up in Chinatown and believe it or not, I've never dine here before! This hole in the wall is super affordable and the food is decent. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive! We ordered the scrambled egg with shrimp chow fun, a bowl of won ton soup, stir fry leek and lamb dish, and fried tofu with cod. The dishes came out quickly and I am so glad the food was not oily or salty. I don't think they use any MSG since I didn't have to drink much water afterwards. Bonus point there! This is probably one of the few restaurants that stayed open in Chinatown so I'm glad they're still open during the current state of Oakland. The food is great in my opinion. It's flavorful and not too oily. Their prices have barely changed from the original so everything is still fairly priced. My go to dish is the Silky Egg and Shrimp Chow Fun. So we ordered salt & pepper fish, eggplant with pork and mushrooms with tofu and veggies. 1) Salt & Pepper Fish - had a little kick to it that was unexpected. We got about 11 pieces. 2) Eggplant with pork - not a fan of eggplant but ordered it since our granddaughter wanted to try it (her vote after tasting it was - thumbs down). But the hubby liked it. 3) Mushrooms with tofu and veggies - the grandkids love the mushrooms and tofu. I counted maybe 7 pieces of mushrooms (some whole and some halves) which is not a lot. Bruh this place was here when I was a kid, back in the 90s. As a kid I used to think this place was good lol. I'm back in 2020 as an adult and it's aight. Now I see that it's one of the last cheap Chinese restaurants in the area here in downtown Oakland. It's probably as cheap as you are allowed to go here downtown, and dumpling soup is still decent. I think for the price and the fact everything here feels hole in the wall-y, the food feels like it's chock full of MSG, it's a decent spot and the 3 dishes for 26 is a pretty solid deal. The table gets a pretty standard soup, but check with them to see if you can get the vegetarian option, because I'm pretty sure there's pork in it if that's an issue you might have. The broccoli beef, melon chicken, and the spare ribs were the options of choices. It was all aight, and felt decent for the price, but nothing special. My friend got the egg noodles, which also looked good. They don't give you a ton of dumplings, but each one is tasty and fresh, full of crunchy shrimp. Food comes out very quickly. The broth was piping hot and had little bits of fried shallots and ground pork in it. It's not a super flavorful broth. My buddies loaded theirs down with fish sauce (available upon request).
