    20260228 - Honey Walnut Prawns
    Dexter D.

We arrived for an early dinner at about 5:15 on a Saturday night. There were six of us and we were celebrating Chinese New Year as well as our dad's upcoming birthday. We were seated at a large round table with a lazy Susan that was set up for eight. The extra place settings and chairs were removed for our convenience. The restaurant has three set menus in English. The fancy one is $398 and features what I would consider higher quality dishes. The other two are $88 for 1/2 Royal Chicken plus a choice of 4 items from a list and $168 for a whole Roast Duck plus a choice of 7 items from a different list. You can see pictures of those menus at the top of the page. I did not take a current picture. I felt that the $88 dinner offered higher quality dishes than the $168 meal. So I ordered the $88 menu and added three items denoted with * below. Royal Chicken - 5 - This dish is served cold with a small dish of minced green onion, minced ginger, oil and salt. The chicken was chopped and tasty. *Creamy Chicken Corn Soup - 2 - The weakest dish of the evening. The broth was missing salt and the creamed corn wasn't sweet. Mongolian Beef - 3 - Beef was tender and there was some heat to this dish. Not the spiciest I've ever had but satisfactory. Braised Rock Cod Clay Pot - 4 - Some battered Rock Cod, Braised Tofu and Mushroom. Tasty! *Lobster E-Fu Mein - 2 - I didn't try the lobster. I did eat the noodles. Not the most flavorful but not bad either. However, when I checked with my dad, he said that there was very little lobster meat and it was the worse lobster he had ever had. I had asked the server how much it would cost to have two lobsters on top of the E-Fu Mein. She quoted me $49.98 which was the price of two full orders. It's a good thing that I passed. Sauteed Bok Choy with Garlic = 4 - Tasty little side dish. We have to eat our veggies! Braised Pork with Preserved Vegetables - 4 - This dish was pretty good. Flavors were right. *Honey Walnut Prawns - 5 - Nice plump Prawns, properly cooked, served with some Mayo sauce and candied Walnuts. Steamed Rice - 3 - Not the best quality rice I've ever had but it was okay. We ordered four bowls and paid $10. Service was hit and miss. It got busy while we were there and there was a line out the door when we left. Once we were seated, presented menus and a pot of tea, it took several minutes before someone came to take our order. Because I had written out our menu, it was very easy to hand to the server who then verified it with me. It took a couple of minutes but she remembered to have someone bring us four glasses of Ice Water. When the food came, it arrived in a hurry. Bang, bang, bang, eight dishes delivered! It was enough food and we had some leftovers. I think that by ordering the way that I did, we had a well-balanced dinner at a price $15 less expensive than their $168 dinner. We had arrived with a cake which they put into a refrigerator for us. When it was time for cake, they provided a cake knife, paper plates and plastic forks at no charge after clearing the table and lazy Susan.

Still 5 stars for this place. Always delivers the expectations. Even though the item (pork cutlet on the side with lai fun noodle) wasn't on the menu, they crafted it just the way I wanted.

This is one of our go-to Hong Kong-style cafés, and their food is consistently excellent. The prices are very reasonable--more affordable than many similar restaurants. The food is always fresh, as a traditional Cantonese person, it truly brings back the nostalgic flavors of my childhood. The staffs are friendly and attentive, the service is excellent. Highly recommended.

    Baked Pork chop over Spaghetti

I've been on the hunt for the best baked pork chop spaghetti and as of right now, Hong Kong Cafe is top of the list! It's a little smaller portion compared to other places, but I love the sauce and tenderness of the pork chop here. The pork is thinly sliced too which makes it easy to eat, and the flavor of the sauce is perfection! This is a dish that does take a little longer to make, so just an FYI if you're eating with a group or short on time. My BF ordered the roast duck and roast pork combo, and I loved the flavor on both! The duck isn't too fatty and the roast pork had the right crunch I was looking for. We ordered this as a rice plate, so it came with a small side of cooked napa cabbage and two sauces. Both sauces were good, erring on the sweeter side, however the sauce you should really go for is the sa te one that's on the table. Totally elevates and complements the meat, and cabbage, as well as added that extra punch to my spaghetti. The sa te sauce isn't spicy, but it's jam packed with umami flavaaaa. They're on the left as soon as you walk into Pacific East mall. Parking lot is huge, however it's always packed in this lot. You'll find parking eventually though. The waiter was really nice but I noticed EVERY SINGLE TABLE got a tea pot except us. We weren't offered any nor did I ask for one, but I noticed they put one down on every new customer's table as soon as they sat down. Menu is large, prices are competitive and yes they do take card/Apple Pay.

Located in the Pacific East Mall with a Ranch 99, this spot is a great Hong Kong-style cafe addition to the area! Lots of parking in the lot (but make sure to put your valuables away!). We've come here for dinner a few times and are generally satisfied, with lots of leftovers! True to the hk style, there are lots of dishes to choose from. Portion sizes are large, and everything is shareable. Service is standard for a Chinese restaurant, but generally friendly. They also do dimsum on the weekend, and have lots of takeout options! Not a fancy spot, but great for a Chinese food fix.

Baked pork chop rice on red sauce and white sauce

After a fun day I'm SF, we stopped by around 4pm for a late lunch/early dinner at this cafe. So there was barely any customers and service was quick because there wasn't many guest yet. I really wanted to like this place because authentic Hong Kong style cafe food has been hard to find. Sadly this place was disappointing, the baked rice we came for had so much sauce. There was more sauce than rice and it was too sweet. It was hard to eat more than a few bites so we took the rest home. The beef chow fun was on a greasy side for me, but I did like that they added the yellow chives. The red bean ice drink was also too sweet for me. Overall, this place could improve if everything was just less sweet.

We were craving for soup and ho fun after a hike and this place did not disappoint! This restaurant is inside a shopping plaza. Inside is super clean and spacious. Our server was super nice and attentive. We ordered a west lake beef soup, hot and sour soup, and scrambled egg and prawn chow fun. Everything was super delicious and filled our tummy. This might be our new favorite spot!

I went here on a weekday and it was packed! Service is quick and the food is tasty. It's nothing fancy but it's a good spot for casual Chinese food. We ordered off the set menu where you choose 4 dishes and they give you the Empress Chicken and soup for free. The whole meal was $88 and can feed 5-6 people. All of the dishes were pretty good but my favorite ones were the Hong Kong Style ribs and the salty fish chicken tofu. We also ordered bitter melon and ribs off the main menu which were also pretty good. Staff was friendly and parking is very easy as this is located in a large strip mall next to a Happy Lemon and 99 Ranch. I will be back!

For an authentic HK Cafe dining experience the HK Cafe in Richmond does not disappoint. Excellent HK Milk Tea, Beef Chow Fun that has good wok hay, and on point Singaporean chow mi fun... Service is what one may expect from a typical HK Cafe... fast, efficient and non nonsense kind of quick service. Seating is roomy with booth seating snd large round tables for larger parties. Overall a great spot for HK food at great prices. :)

I heard from a friend that this place is popular, so I decided to check it out. It's a Chinese restaurant inside a shopping center with a nice atmosphere. The food is affordable and delicious! The service seemed a bit busy.

    Duck and Taro, Chef's special
    Annie D.

Hard to rate this place. The food was delicious! But I'm giving it 3 stars because the service was kind of chaotic. The dishes came out slowly one at a time with the fried rice coming out at the very end after we were almost done with everything else. So... we ate just chicken first, then duck, then veggies, and then rice LOL. Actually, I think they forgot about the rice dish, because we had to remind them. Ideally, it would have been nice to eat the rice alongside all the other dishes together. The service people were nice but seemed really really busy, running all over the place.

Still our favorite Chinese restaurant to go. Love their chicken broth rice and all their entrees. Waitress always nice and friendly.

    Tomato Beef Chow Mein

I came here for dinner and this place was packed. Thankfully they had a small table available so I didn't need to wait. There were a lot of large parties dining in and it was loud. The menu had a wide selection of food choices. I got the Tomato Beef Chow Mein and it was delicious. The beef was really tender and the tomatoes were juicy. The noodles had a nice crunch with every bite. The sauce was sweet and tangy flavor and made everything in the dish taste so flavorful. I also got the salt & pepper pork ribs and it was good. The pork was tender and the outside was crispy. It was lightly seasoned and had just enough flavor where it didn't taste bland. It would have been great if it came with some dipping sauce. The dish did come with a few pieces of jalapeno peppers but the pork wasn't spicy. Service was a little slow. They did not have enough servers working all the tables. My server barely came back to check in on me. The only thing I needed was an extra tea refill. The food on the other hand came out in a timely manner. I actually had trouble finding someone to pay my bill. Eventually, I just got up and walked to the front counter and told the lady working there that I wanted to pay my bill. The inside of the restaurant was very clean. The tables were nicely spaced out so people had more than enough room to move around. One of their TVs actually had a Doraemon anime playing. Parking wasn't an issue since they were located inside the Pacific East Mall.

Came across this place while walking on Clement, craving noodles, and it did not disappoint. CQ…read morerepresents everything I love about a family-owned Chinese restaurant and is a place I'll continue to visit and support. Cucumber Salad (7/10): Pretty different from most typical cucumber salads that are sesame oil-heavy. This version was more acidic, almost like a pickled cucumber dish. It wasn't mind-blowing, but it worked well as a refreshing palate cleanser between the more flavorful entrées. Shanghai Style Sweet & Sour Ribs (8/10): Very reminiscent of American-style Chinese food. The ribs were extremely tender, and the sauce was sweet without being too overpowering. Pairing bites with rice and cucumbers kept me wanting more. The bok choy on the plate was simply boiled, and while I enjoy clean, plain vegetables, others might expect a bit more. Braised Beef Noodle Soup (8.5/10): There are many noodle options to try here, and we went with the regular hand-pulled. The noodles were good, though I personally wished they were a bit firmer. The broth had a deep umami flavour and was exceptionally well seasoned. I found myself dunking rice from the set plate into the broth and just eating that. The meat could have used a little more character, as it was just tender slices, but it didn't need much more since the broth carried the dish. Definitely a place I plan to visit anytime I'm in the area, and I'm excited to try more of the delicious dishes on their menu.

The beef rib seemed to be hands down the most popular choice. Chicken Wings: Didn't seem to have any coating/batter. Super crispy. Had a layer of fat beneath the crispy skin, so not like the rendered off Korean style. And a nice soy taste. Beef Rib Knife Cut Noodles: This looked epic. Two huge ribs sticking out a bowl of squiggly noodles and glowing red soup. It tasted great too. The beef ribs had such tender and flavorful meat morsels. Thankfully I wasn't trying to impress anyone, so I ate the ribs by hand. The knife cut noodles were fun, with a springy chewy texture. But the real star was the broth. Such slow cooked beef goodness. And some nice spices to bring out even more complexity.

Don't go here if you have an hour lunch. It will not be enough time for you to eat. We got there around 2:07 and didn't get our food until 2:40. 10 minutes to eat a very hot soup is neither feasible or safe, lol. I love that it's a family-run establishment. There was a young school-aged girl who served us. She must've been on spring break. She did make a mistake on our order. I had initially ordered one thing but then changed my mind and went with something else. She ended up bringing both. I wasn't going to send it back or ask to take it off the bill, because I felt bad. So, I just asked her if she could please pack it to go. Which she did. We ordered some calamari, which we all liked. My daughter and I ordered some soups, I don't remember what they were called. They were lacking a bit in flavor. My son ordered the Pad See Ew, which also didn't seem like it was seasoned enough compared to others we have had. I do think I'll give this place another try. Hopefully it was just an off day.

Hidden gem in El Sobrante that serves up some of the best Laotian and Thai food in the Bay Area…read more Every time we visit, must-orders are the Nam Khao (crispy rice ball salad with fermented pork sausage and fresh herbs) and Ka Soy (Laotian noodle soup). If you see Nam Khao on the menu of a Laotian/Thai restaurant, that means they know what they are doing just because it's so labor-intensive to make a salad(!) and the fermented pork has to be damn-near perfect for this salad to really shine and round out the fresh herbs and seasonings which includes lime juice, vinegar, and fish sauce. Ka Soy (the noodle soup) is a comfort food enjoyed in Southeast Asia. It's not the Thai-style where it's a curry broth and the noodles are fried, so let's not get it mixed up. Instead, it's bone broth that been simmered for hours and it's somewhat a lighter broth. The noodles are wide rice noodles in a big bowl of hot broth served with a mixture of ground pork cooked down with tomatoes along with fresh bean sprouts, scallions, and cilantro - simply a divine noodle soup that a must-try. We are the only customer when we arrived. Very pleasant not overpowering jazz mood music plays. Our server has a very pleasant demeanor. We have Taiwan beef noodle soup. Nice and hot the way it should be. Perfect to my tongue textures of the beef cubes and egg noodles. The beef broth was amazing. At the end of our meal I was full. Too full to the point that I almost cried that I couldn't drink the last gulps but it was too small a portion to warrant taking home. Our Kung Pao chicken? Delicious. Chock full of chicken bites and delicious vegetables. Somehow the plentiful peanuts set my taste buds acraving. Wow wow Pao tasty. The only miss with this was that it was brought to us on a coldish serving plate. A common mistake. We didn't get to try this dish hot. We are now wanting our bill. Seems like long time wanting. To our dismay, our friendly server got herself enmeshed in an on again off again conversation with someone at another table shortly after we arrived. Then she disappeared for a while. We are tempted to guess the bill amount (turns out we guessed wrong by $1), leave cash on the table and walk out. Instead I get up and she appears at the register. Magic. We pay proper like and walk out respectfully. I wouldn't mind coming back.
