1/18/2025 Time: 3:30 PM 53° Cool, sunny Oakland Chinatown has its Chinese Lunar New Year Bazaar this weekend. After walking around to visit the many vendors, I decided to have lunch at Yung Kee on the corner of 9th & Webster Streets. One of my friends has dined here and recommended this restaurant for lunch. After perusing the menu, the choices were narrowed to chicken congee or shrimp and scrambled eggs over rice. The congee would have been good and the weather was cool. However, the last time I had shrimp and scrambled eggs over rice was at a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco near my job in the Civic Center area over 12 years ago. Eats: shrimp and scrambled eggs over rice and a pot of hot tea. Drizzled with some soy sauce, my dish was delicious. The hot tea was perfect, flavorful and soothing when I drank about 5 cups. This was total comfort food and beverage that I almost doze off in the restaurant. For $15, it was a good deal. The only drawback was one of the employees was mopping the floor when I was eating my lunch. I will return in the future to have lunch again. I might even order food to go for dinner. read more

Yung Kee has been around in Oakland Chinatown for decades. Pre-COVID it was also open late for dependable late night eats, however that hasn't been the case for a while. It's a nice family that runs it. Yung Kee has the classic Hong Kong/Cantonese restaurant. I've had their bbq (roast pork, bbq pork, roast duck, etc.) before over rice which has been tasty and not too salty. I've also had their noodles, including their Tomato Beef Pan Fried Noodles which are saucy and crispy at the same time. Their staff works hard and turns around orders within a reasonable timeframe. People get takeout and there is some seating inside. They used to have an upstairs, I hope their business grows back to being able to offer the upstairs. read more

Good food but pricey for a hole in the wall spot in Oakland Chinatown. I came here for lunch Saturday afternoon around noon and expected it to be busy. Surprisingly it was almost empty with only one other diner. I seated myself as the sole employee in the restaurant didn't look up or acknowledge me as I walked in and stood around for ~30 seconds. No one else came out from the back either until a few minutes later. Menus were already placed at some of the tables, so I grabbed one to peruse. They have a huge selection of rice and noodle dishes. I went with the barbecue duck leg and wonton in noodle soup for $15.15. My noodle came out within 10 minutes, which was pretty quick. Both the duck leg and the wontons were delicious and the noodles have the springiness to them that I expected, so food was good. I just don't know if it's worth the price as after tax and tip it was close to $19 for the bowl. It initially didn't look like that much food, but I was stuffed by the time I finished eating and didn't get that hungry even around dinnertime, so portions are good here. While I was eating, a bunch of customers came in to buy their bbq duck and pork to go, among other things. It costs $35 for a whole duck, and both the bbq pork and roast pork costs ($15.95/lb) at the time of this review. I haven't bought bbq duck in a while, but man prices have really gone up! We were wanting to get some Chinese roast pork (pork belly) before we headed home, and we came across this shop and decided to give it a try. So we got about 1.5 pounds of their roast pork, which was quite delicious and tasty. Flavor was spot on, and the meat was pretty tender and juicy. The skin on the pork was still crunchy but, since we bought it at around 3 PM, it wasn't as crunchy as if we had bought it earlier in the day. But, regardless, it was still delicious. Price as of September of 2024 was either $16 or $17 per pound, I can't fully recall. So, I think the price was reasonable and decent. read more

I decided to explore Oakland Chinatown a bit more after discovering Shandong restaurant last week. This restaurant is another one that looks intimidating from the outside but has decent reviews. The inside is very small with very few seatings. I believe most people order to-go from here than actually dinning here. The restaurant takes cash only, which is very annoying since I rarely even carry wallet anymore after getting used to Apple Pay. Luckily I was prepared and had some cash on me. The food was alright but not outstanding. I was happy to find some exotic dishes that I couldn't find in other Chinese restaurants such as pig tongue. Did you also come here after seeing that tik tok/ig reel video about someone's mom being a restaurant owner for 30 years and her favorite restaurant in the bay is this place and she always orders the same dish: the wonton noodle soup with bbq duck and get a side of crispy pork?! I gotta say my expectations where way too high bc mom recs come with a lot of anticipation for me and I was honestly (sadly) disappointed by it. The wontons were really good and got a lot of bite to it but the noodles weren't my vibe and the broth comes out pretty much unseasoned (the table comes with condiments though so use them!). The bbq duck is fatty and yummy but for people unfamiliar with some Chinese bbq dishes be warned that it will be served room temperature. generous portions and price was around $12. We also ordered the chow mein and we were pleasantly surprised by it! Noodles were perfectly crispy and it comes with an assortment of meat ranging from pork, duck, and seafood. Sauce was delicious. Honestly we were too full to enjoy the pork but we took it home as leftovers and they were delicious the next day after popping them in the toaster oven. Ate it with some rice and ssamjang. Just like a lot of other recent posts, I tried this place out thanks to a TikTok video. Yes, I am easily influenced. But also, I don't feel bad about it. TikTok in many ways have brought more love and attention to places that deserve more business - and i.am.here.for.it! Anyways, I had the one dish mentioned - the noodles with bbq duck, wontons and thick wide rice noodles (called hor fun btw). Well actually, I had two forms of it - the other with the default wonton noodles. I can confirm that hor fun version is much better - neither noodles aren't anything fancy because it's just typical packaged noodles but the thick wide rice noodles carry the flavor better of the broth. Also, it's worth noting that I am not a duck person and debated on skipping the duck but you definitely can taste the duck in the broth and as a non-non-duck person, I found the broth and meat quite fitting! I got my food to-go and didn't think I compromised any flavor (but perhaps some of the noodle texture as it got quite soft). Note: If you do take out, they put the soup directly into the noodle (not separate) but they put that soup in when you come and pick up so it's not sitting in the noodles at least till you come! Overall, I found the broth very flavorful and the wontons very tasty. I also tried the BBQ pork which wasn't bad. I would probably come back and try other things! read more

I've always passed by this place whenever I go to Chinatown but never tried it until now. They have pretty good noodle soups and Chinese bbq meats. I tried their bbq duck and wonton noodle soup (got the ho fun noodles), green beans, and beef chow fun. All were very authentic. Their bbq duck was good in the noodle soup and even gave the soup some added flavors with the bbq taste. The wontons I thought were alright, not the best. Their beef chow fun was on the more oilier side. I know beef chow fun is usually oily but this one was extremely oily. You won't need lip gloss after the meal. It had the smoky wok flavor too. Their green beans were really good and flavorful. They were oily too but it was delicious. Yung kee has some good fried rice. Very tasteful. Very fulfilling. Their BBQ pork is mummy too. Well seasoned and great bbq taste. Looks can be deceiving but as a true helper and leaving reviews this place has good food. I haven't had any other menu items in awhile besides the fried rice and BBQ pork. But my other half likes the roasted pork. The lady and guy in the front are nice and kind. If you're looking for some good Chinese food give them a try. This location is not closed and is and has been my favorite place to eat in Chinatown Oakland since I was a kid. I'm known by name there. Everything taste delicious and the price is very reasonable. The best duck and won ton soup you will ever eat and the fried rice is so good you don't need soy sauce. The vegetables are fresh and the entire staff are family and friendly. The food is fresh and nothing is frozen. You can roll up early and catch grandma making won to fresh and by hand. The duck, chicken and pork is cooked on site and when you dine in the food is served quick with care and steaming hot. When you call by phone it will be immediately cooked and ready when they say for sure. The family is getting older and the restaurant hours close sooner I believe at 6pm and they only accept cash no card or apple pay but the food is so worth it. It's so authentic and you can taste the traditional recipes and love they put into there food. The quality never changed my whole life and I suggest you try this place out for yourself and you might bump into to me there. Apparently this place is an Oakland staple, and after trying it I can tell why. Yung Kee is a hole in the wall restaurant located in Oakland Chinatown and one of their must try's is the wonton soup with crispy duck . Everything about it was BOMB! The broth was rich and flavorful, the wontons were big and full, and the duck was melt in your mouth perfection with crispy crunchy skin that hit just right with every bite. Just keep in mind, this place IS cash only, but don't let that stop you from trying this delicious restaurant! A few things to note on a more serious note: it's street parking only so you'll most likely have to walk a little to get to this spot, but it's not so bad. And the reason why it's not 5 stars inspite of the amazing food? It felt like we got profiled. I went with my fiance and brother in law (both black) and my cousin and his wife (asian and white/latin). When my cousin went to order, they took his order and allowed him to sit back down. When my fiance ordered, they charged him right away (however, they didn't give him a receipt). He paid the gentleman that was working the front at the time. When we got up to leave, one of the female workers yelled for us to stop and that we needed to pay. And it wasn't until the guy we paid told her that she said "oh ok, have a good day". I came here after coming to Oakland Chinatown for the first time and wanting to go to a sit-down restaurant for some duck. We quickly got sat down, and they gave us some free chrysanthemum tea. It was what you would expect from other Chinese places - not too flavorful and good for cutting through some of the oiliness of the dishes. We got the BBQ pork fried rice and the barbecued duck and barbecued pork with rice. They were both delicious and super authentic. I really liked it that they weren't too oily and the meat was so soft and flavorful. The fried rice was one of the best fried rices I've had - taking a bite just made me eat more and more. They were kind enough to give us some small boxes and a bag for our leftovers. It does seem to be cash-only and I don't think they have an ATM, so be careful to be prepared ahead of time. {Covid-19 Review} Yung Kee is open in the daytime! I got a whole roast duck for $23. chopped up. As soon as I arrived, a bunch of other customers showed up and there was a line out the door. The counter has a plastic shield like a sneeze guard. The tables are setup for takeout only. The roast duck wasn't very salty. It had a nice flavor. Not bad for $23. They said they cook the ducks there. I kind of miss stopping here after work for a quick order of Wor Won Ton or Beef Chow Fun. Had some donations to drop off at Salvation Army and been craving some wonton soup here. Specifically the wonton with duck and rice noodles. This a nostalgia place as me and the coworkers when I worked Corporate had long hours, would pick food up from here. It only took me 3 drive around to get a park in Chinatown. It was refreshing to see people still packing this place. Ordered my soup and some mixed vegetables and rock cod with veggies for my guy. They aren't heavily staffed so it took a bit, but the results are still good. Sorry was so excited that when I got home scarfed it down. The rock cod was fried but not crispy and looked like it was sautéed with the veggies. 20 some years later and the flavor is still consistent. This place serves flavorful authentic Cantonese rice/noodle dishes and BBQ that used to be quick and cheap, but inflation in 2022 has raised the price by at least 20%...still not bad though if you consider the portion! Cash only. Whole roast duck is $28 now and half is $15, still juicy with crispy skin--they're probably the best if you go mid-day, I wouldn't order any BBQ towards closing. Rice and noodle dishes are what I like the best from this place, ranging from Singaporean noodle to beef chow fun to salty fish fried rice to minced beef over rice. One of the few places that you can find in the Chinatown area that is open late. The place is not that large and can easily be packed. We came here looking for some late night snacks. It's tough as they ran out of some of the items I wanted to order (chow fun, congee, bbq pork). We were able to order the half soy chicken and roast pork, bbq pork fried rice, beef with vegetables, and a beef chow mein (which took the longest to come out as they almost forgot to make it). The food was not bad and definitely did its job to help fill us up with some carbs and protein. Its good to remember not to expect a high level of customer service. We came here after we saw a great review in them on TikTok. My husband couldn't wait to try the duck soup and said it was great. He really like the eggy taste of the broth. I got the wonton soup which came with ALOT of wontons. They have a bit of a cinnamon flavor to the pork inside and were very good. I wasn't a huge fan of the oyster sauce noodles because it had too much sauce on them and it made it almost too salty to eat. I would have liked it a little more if it came with bok choy as well.
