I have been going to Flower Lounge since I moved in the neighborhood and there is no replacement. I always get the same thing, the Mongolian Beef lunch special and I have never wanted for anything else. I have tried other dishes when my Mom gets them and they are always great, but let me say without doubt, they make the best Mongolian Beef I have ever tried, & Mongolian Beet is the dish I always order at different restaurants because I want to see if anyone else can even match Flower Lounge but none have, not even close, Flower Lounge food is better by a long way. I always get it with their Fried Rice and it always makes two meals for me so I'll get lunch and dinner. On top of this the staff is always above and beyond friendly. My mom hasn't been in that place for ages but the lady still asks how's she's doing. She found out I like the chili pepper oil and ever since she always makes sure to stuff a bunch in the box for me, I don't even have to mention it. On top of that she occasionally throws in free soup for myself and my mother, and I'm not even a weekly customer. The only negative thing to say about this place is probably that the restaurant itself looks a little beat up and dingy but honestly with everything else I could care less. Good food and good people, and good prices. I'm actually only writing this review because I want to get some of their food but they're not open for another few hours. This is my first time eating from here. So sad to learn that the owner, Mei, passed away from cancer on Tuesday. She was only in her mid-50s. I don't know what this means for the future of the restaurant but I hope it is able to continue on. On the advice of a friend, I decided to try Flower Lounge. It did not disappoint. I thought the Schezuan Chicken was tasty (although could be spicier) The Mongolian beef had a nice spice level and was very tender. Pork fried rice was good. The woman who was working everywhere it seemed (waiting tables, managing the front counter, and perhaps even cooking was friendly and sweet. I am sure it has to be hard to be working while also mourning Mei. The portions are EXTREMELY generous. We'll be back and you should definitely support this locally owned small business! read more

The one lady seemed to be doing the order taking, table service and cashier. When she wasn't busy, she socialized with regular customers. The interior appears old and outdated. There's cozy booths along the wall, and larger tables for groups. Decor (3/5). I looked over the menu and ordered some favorite dishes: - Wor Won Ton Soup - Salt & Pepper Shrimp Service time was fair. It was a little busy for 3pm on a Sunday. Lots of takeout orders. Service Grade (5/5). - Wor Won Ton Soup, Grade (5/5), a bit pricey at $14.95, but the soup was loaded with at least 12 plump dumplings. Along with chopped cabbage, shrimp, beef, and chicken. I added a splash of soy sauce, and it was perfect. - Salt & Pepper Shrimp, Grade (3/5), Plump and fresh, but under seasoned. These shrimp are fried and served with the shell on. You have the option of peeling them, or eating them whole. I usually pull the head off, and eat it. They should be salty and a little spicy. These shrimp were not very salty. I had to dip them in red chili oil to bring the taste out. Maybe they just use a different recipe, but I won't order them again. (Price: $19.95). Overall, a nice experience. I gave the server a nice tip, and she gave me a handful of fortune cookies. If I'm in the area, I might return and try other dishes. read more

The service was amazing. My first time I ordered takeout. I ordered pork fried rice which was kind of basic. I ordered the bok choy which was all stems and very tough, but what was actually amazing was the shrimp in lobster sauce. It was extremely delicious, but a small portion for the price. The owner, May, provides attentive and friendly service anything we needed was handled promptly and thoughtfully. The round wedding-style table comfortably accommodates up to ten guests, making it ideal for group dining. Parking can be a bit challenging due to street parking, but I was able to find a spot across the street without much trouble. Mei and the other woman who works here treat my elderly dad (who has Alzheimer's and dementia) like family; whenever I visit him, he wants to come here for his "shrimp dinner" so like clockwork we come. Everything from rushing to open the door to help is in with my dad's wheelchair to talking with him in his native Cantonese, to serving him special soup that we didn't even ask for speaks volumes about how much they care for him. While we're there, we see them interacting with all the other customers who come in. They genuinely seem to enjoy their guests, and Mei always sends them off by saying, "See you soon. Tomorrow, right? I see you tomorrow?" The food is great also (shrimp in lobster sauce is my dad's single favorite dish -- great shrimp with thin slices of meltingly soft pork with onions, sweet red and green peppers in magic brown sauce) but Mei and her coworkers will win over your hearts. I ordered take out about an hour before closing on a Sun night. The lady that answered the phone and took my order was very nice. Upon entering the restaurant I was greeted warmly and was told that my order was coming shortly. The dish I ordered, Singapore style noodles was not over the top but solid and serving portion was large so overall my experience was positive. I had been wanting to visit Flower Lounge for a while. I was incurably curious to try it after stumbling upon its yelp page and noting it was a 4.2 star establishment with a name akin to the legendary Hong Kong Flower Lounge (closed as of 12/2022) in Millbrae. The latter Lounge in it's 80s and 90s heyday was the epitome of Chinese fine dining in the Bay Area. Unfortunately, it had been on a long decline since it's peak in the glory days of yuppiedom and unsurprisingly shuttered. Could Flower Lounge mirror some of the panache of its Peninsula near-namesake? I had wanted to find out for a couple years but was thwarted by its pandemic closure of the dining room. (I knew a take home experience wouldn't do it justice.) I was happy to find out that they've re-opened recently for dine in. As I entered and looked around, a hint that it wasn't just catering to suburbanized "American" clientele were the written in Chinese-only specials pasted as flyers on the wall. I have no idea what they said or if they were any good since I'm an ABC (American Born Chinese) and wasn't able to read and order. So my Americanized eyeballs stuck to the standard English menu. I ended up choosing the Peking Style Spare Ribs, Salted Fish with Chicken and Bean Curd clay pot and, indulging in my irresistible ABC inclinations, the Tomato Beef Chow Mein. The Salted Fish with Chicken clay pot arrived first. It was still hot and percolating and remained bubbling for a full two minutes! After waiting for it to cool a bit, I took a taste. It was incredulously good. I hadn't expected this at all. The salted fish flavor permeated its whole contents--the chicken, tofu and sauce. It's un-ABC of me to love salted fish and its profound pungence, but I am unapologetically still Chinese. The pot was so hot and heat retentive, the dish stayed that way until the end of the meal on a cold winter's night. The Peking Spare Ribs were also a revelation. Lightly fried and surprisingly soft, the biggest surprise was that it was slightly more sour than sweet. Most places, the ribs are basked in an over-powering, sweet red glaze sauce. Not here. Its subtlety made the dish perpetually inviting. Unlike other Peking Rib experiences, I kept on eating, never succumbing to taste fatigue. Alas, the letdown was the Tomato Beef Chow Mein. Thanks to years of said indulgence, I am probably a connoisseur, albeit reluctantly. First, it was clearly lukewarm. Definitely, a poor first impression on the taste buds. But the main transgression were the thick Udon noodles. Huh?? Why huge Japanese soup noodles in a Chinese-Am wok dish?? The massive strands simply overwhelmed everything with their mouth-monopolizing gobs of dough. The delicately sweet tomato sauce and the tender texture of the beef were left in the dust. Where was the ole classic spaghetti-sized pasta or the trendy, pan-fried noodles? Just a strange culinary choice. But otherwise Flower Lounge would be worthy of a Michelin mention in my book. Definitely Bib Gourmand level (or even a one star albeit without one star service. More below). It was as if one of the Millbrae HK Flower Lounge chefs from its heydays quit to open his or her own. (This was exactly the rumored dynamic of Silver House in San Mateo.) Now about that service. The food was plunked down, and we were left alone. Not asked if we needed anything after that. It hearkened back to the typical mom and pop Chinese kitchens of yesterday: "The food is good, so get in and get out. You want to be friends and be nice? Go to your Family MahJong place. Here is to eat!" And so I did. Shortfalls aside, the place overall was still quite pleasing to both the Chinese and American sides of my palate. read more

What I got was overcooked breaded, shoe leather chicken in a gooey almost tasteless chicken cornstarch gravy without the slightest hint of Szechuan peppercorns or other appropriate spices. Popped in and gave the Flower Lounge another try. There are some new people tending to the customers, they were very friendly. The food was identical to our last visit 3 years ago. They still have the lunch specials, which are mostly rice plates. Out the door, this place is about $20 per person at lunch time. They have an impressive business serving contractors. Those contractors are likely working on properties up in the hills. They drive up. One of the staff of the Flower Lounge runs out with a box full of Chinese food - hands it to them - and then they quickly drive off. Impressive efficiency. read more
