This place was everything I wanted it to be. Large dining room and friendly staff. Great food. I visited on a Wednesday night about 9:15pm. My flights were delayed and I was happy to find the place open on the way to my hotel. I was greeted by a handsome young man who seated me immediately and filled my water. When he took my order , I asked if they had Thali, as it was not in the menu. He smiled and said yes. I ordered that plus the garlic naan. It arrived in a beautiful display of colors and tasted wonderful. It had chicken tikka, chicken tikka masala, saag, and a beef curry. I was also surprised with a complimentary serving of Kheer at the end. The price was shockingly inexpensive. This place is now on my faves list. read more

Gurkhas has some of the best Butter Chicken I have ever had. The chicken was so tender and the sauce was absolutely perfect. The dinner portion was exactly right for me, and the order of Butter Naan and Garlic Naan hit the spot. My family did not talk at all unless it was to mention how amazing the food was. The vibe of the restaurant was so quiet and chill, the table settings were lovely and the waiter/host didn't let our water run out at all. The service was excellent the whole way through. I can't believed I've lived within 5 minutes of this place for so long and never knew it existed. They have a buffet from noon to 2:30 I'm definitely going to hit up soon. My parents took me and my boyfriend here, and there are some pros and cons to this restaurant. First off, the food is delicious! All the curries we ordered were seasoned perfectly! The garlic naan was delicious. The veggie samosas were bursting with flavor! I would not order the chicken pakora again. You get eight tiny nugget sized pieces that are only OK. They were a bit tough, and I initially thought that they heated up some chicken nuggets and just seasoned them. The ambience was delightful! The coloring of the walls and the music was the perfect setting for a delightful dinner! The Service, however, was surprisingly slow. There was one person working and she was doing a pretty decent job. She was respectful and kind and super sweet. However, there were only two other tables in the restaurant at the time. We arrived around 4 PM on a Sunday. Our food came out incredibly slowly. Our boxes arrived slowly as well. The whole experience took almost 2 hours, which was excessive. read more

Lovely space with friendly attentive service and delicious seemingly home cooked fare. We really enjoyed the saag lamb (greens with chunks of lamb meat), chicken momos (Nepalese dumplings which were quite flavorful and herbaceous with a nice sauce), and aloo paratha (potato stuffed whole wheat bread). We have been to Bombay House a few times, so decided to try nearby Gurkhas instead. Glad we did - it was excellent! It's much less crowded and has a very tranquil atmosphere. Started with veggie momos - the Nepalese dumplings. Delicious - especially the turmeric laden sauce that it comes with. Had the chicken tikka masala and dal makhani for our entrées. Both outstanding. Came here randomly because it was on the way to REI, and I'm so glad that we did. During lunch there is a buffet with a pretty decent amount of offerings for vegetarians and meat eaters. On the vegetarian side, there were three different types of rice, stir fried noodles, saag paneer, aloo kerau, vegetable coconut karma, naan, fried naan, mixed pakora and mixed lentils on top of a small salad bar. On meat side, there was the goat, butter chicken and tandoori chicken. That's a lot of food. We also ordered onion bhaji, vegetable pakora, yellow dhal soup, and aloo bhindi with garlic naan. Yes there were a lot of containers to bring home. Out of the buffet, I recommend all three of the meat dishes. They were tender and delicious. I loved the mixed lentil and the aloo kerau for the vegetarian dishes. The onion bhaji and vegetable pakora were great, fried perfectly. The aloo bhindi was okay. We have had better at other places but still decent. The Daal soup was fabolous, very flavorful! Definitely would recommend. read more

I ordered through their online ordering system, which was a little clunky, but it got the job done. I thought the food was delicious. The portion sizes were great, the flavors were excellent, and the pick up experience was hassle free. The interior was dimly lit and seemed quite cozy. As I was picking the food up, I made a mental note to be sure to eat in next time. My biggest complaint was the spice level was too mild for me. I ordered medium spice level, but couldn't really taste any spice. I have found Indian and Thai restaurants vary greatly with their spice levels, so I will just remember to order it spicier next time. Really loved Gurkhas! The parking isn't the easiest since it shares the lot with the strip mall, but overall not terrible. We loved the decor and atmosphere being very peaceful. The onion bhaji appetizer came out hot and was a generous portion. My only complain would be the green sauce (I assume mint chutney) was bland. Our entrees though we're fabulous. They came out extremely hot and fresh. The chicken for both were so juicy and tender. The butter chicken is the best we have had in Salt Lake City so far. The naan..... wow wow and wow. I'm always up for trying a new Indian restaurant so when I used the surprise me feature on Yelp and Gurkhas came up I was more than willing to give it a try. We started with vegetable samosas which were delicious. Then I had the chicken coconut korma and my husband had chicken tikka masala. We ordered both of them spicy, level 5. Both came out spicy and delicious! We also had a mango lassi with our meals and they were also delicious. I'm always happy when I order my food spicy and it actually comes out spicy. We were there at an odd time during the Super Bowl so there were only a few other customers. But the service was excellent and we loved the authentic decor. read more

Gurkhas has their buffet during lunch, which most Indian restaurants seem to have stopped offering since the pandemic. Love the mellow atmosphere and beautiful decorations. Their food is pretty mild, but hits the spot if you are looking to enjoy a variety of dishes. Some of the food in the buffet does not seem to be replenished often during the hours of the buffet, so you may be eating one of the last pieces of naan, which has turned hard and crispy. They also use aluminum foil to cover some of the buffet offerings instead of the large buffet metal lids. If the buffet was replenished more frequently, this restaurant would be even more appealing. They have plastic gloves next to the buffet with a sign that says to use them for safety. Some patrons use them, but some do not. I am not sure if the gloves help in any way, but I appreciate them trying to make people feel safe. read more

I only post reviews when a place is really good or really bad. Unfortunately I went for lunch today and had the buffet. I should have avoided this place as we were the only people in the restaurant even though it was about 1:40 in the afternoon. You can tell they just reheat everything from the day or week before. The basmati rice was crunchy which means they reheat the rice from the day before and the Naan bread was totally stale. Can't recommend the buffet and someone actually showed up when we were leaving and ordered off the menu, maybe that might be a better option. read more

After some night laps at Brighton we were hungry and wanted to try something new. My friend Jack suggested we go to "Gurkans", which he found on Google, which he later realized was in fact "Gurkhas". We arrived at 9:30PM, and they seated us willingly despite closing at 10:00PM. They had incredibly kind staff, it felt like we were being invited in by a family. The restaurant was really tranquil and clean. We ordered Chana Masala, Chicken Korma, Vegetable Biryani, Naan, and Roti. All the food came quickly. We ordered them with medium spice, which rang true, because the dishes had a kick to them! Spice and all, it was perfect. The food was just as great as the service. We finished up and left 10 minutes AFTER they closed, and just before walking out, my other friend George spilled his water all over their floor. They were very kind about it and insisted he not worry about it. Once we got in the car, an employee ran out our box of food that George had forgotten. These are good people, who make good food. Normally a photo is worth a thousand words, but not in this case, unfortunately. The food in the online photos look great. The naan looks soft and crispy but actually is bland and chewy. The curry has a nice kick (ordered mild+) but spice and flavor just aren't there. The chicken in chicken curry was well cooked but I wanted more masala in my masala. The veg samosa was the best part but it was a tad greasy. The mint sauce was scary, like nuclear green. Can't imagine what's in it. I also didn't love the surprise service fee on my bill from ordering takeout online. Anyhoo, I'm still on the lookout for my go to Indian close to home. read more

I've had better Quick Serve Indian and food truck Indian than here. I ordered butter chicken, lamb coconut korma, and navaratna korma for takeout. The meat and the butter chicken was an odd consistency, almost mealy. The lamb was oddly chewy and didn't taste like lamb, nor did the korma taste like korma. The navaratna karma flavors were completely off as well. All three were completely bland. Literally, the only thing good about them was that they got the heat level right. One of the best chais I've had in SLC. Whenever I crave Indian and Nepali food in East Millcreek, this is my jam. Extremely friendly staff (willing to discuss Nepali culture, history and foods at any time) really cool and relaxing interior décor, and accurate spice scale for preparing dishes to taste. The restaurant has always been very clean when I've been there as well. TIP: if you shop at the Smith's Marketplace right up the road, Ghurkhas has coupons there in the lobby. read more

I'm not sure if they're understaffed or what the issue is but our experience so far has consisted with a broken front door (with a blanket covering the broken glass & held up with duct tape), and an extremely long wait with poor communication and customer service. We thought we'd still proceed given the 4.5 stars on Yelp. However, we've found the staff to be disorganized so we decided to place an order to go. They took our order quickly but we were given no indication on how long it would take. We have been patiently waiting now for 40 minutes and we just inquired for an ETA. The employee rolled her eyes and said she isn't quite sure, but maybe another 10 minutes. The dining room is sparsely occupied, and we've seen a variety of DoorDash and UberEats employees come in and they are also forced to wait. I've seen other people come pick up their own orders who are also faced with the same delays and lack of indication on how long it will take. Maybe the food will make this wait and lack of communication worth it? At this point, I'd be hard pressed to recommend this place or even come back. It does, at least, smell good (hence why they at least got two stars) and I'm hopeful the food won't poison us haha. Maybe I'll wait to post until they actually get the food to us but considering their disorganization, I can't say I have any hope they'd even see my review or care much about it! read more

This is our favorite Indian place! We live 30 minutes away and make the drive regularly, because it's worth it! A few of our favorites are the vegetable pakora as an appetizer (so delicious!) the veggie coconut korma (vegan & amazing) and the chicken tikki masala. The green salad is surprisingly beautiful and high quality/yummy. We usually get some garlic naan and love that too. I have enjoyed everything I've tried here. The ambiance is my favorite- it is calm, quiet, and peaceful music plays while scenes of nature are shown on the tv's. Staff has been very good to us. Thank you Gurkhas! read more
