My crew was starting to get hungry for lunch and what better way to feed a hungry bunch than an all you can eat buffet. We're doing Chinese buffets a lot cause they're the most common, but thistime I decided to give this Indian Buffet a try. Most Indian restaurants seem to offer a lunch buffet. I GPS'ed Kathmandu Grill. Easy to find and plenty of parking. The buffet here is just $17.50 and includes a drink. All the normal offerings were there. I'm not super familar with waht's actually noral, but all I now is thay did have my faves of Tandoori chicken and Tikka masala along with all the fresh hot naan you might like. The service was very polite and we were seated just fine. The interior lookd nice so it's not some hole in the wall kinda place, I think they have more upscale dinners at night. I loaded up my plate with tandoori chicken and some basmati rice with the tikka masala over it. I went up for seconds! The chicken was nice and tender and not all dried out. I liked the nice light basmati rice and went well with the tikka masala. All the rest of the crew liked what they got. I'm glad this lunch didn't take too long either, like some full service sit down restaurant where you gotta wait for you food and order to be taken, we gotta get back to work. read more

Eaten here dozens of times, have had the buffet and à la carte and never once disappointed. I avoid South Asian food because I cook most dishes better in my kitchen than the bland greasy offerings at restaurants, but Kathmandu is different. They know what they are doing. I avoid buffets, but not this one! Their vegetarian food AND meat preparations are excellent and they will make it spicy if you ask nicely. Very attentive service too! My co-workers and I love coming here for their lunch buffet. I finally brought my husband and he really enjoyed the food. The space is clean with soft music playing. Service is great and my water glass never goes empty. They are very attentive at clearing plates from the table even when they get busy. Their buffet offers a variety of dishes for you to try a little bit of everything. My favorites are the spicy vegetables, tempura jalapeños, and their butter chicken. Everything is packed with so much flavor and the spicy items have a kick, but aren't over the top. Definitely recommend! read more

The delicious aroma is what piqued my interest and I'm so glad I stopped into this gem! They offer take out so I ordered the Vegetarian Thali which you can also get vegan (I asked for vegan). For $20 it included: Lentils Spinach with potato Vegetables in coconut sauce Rice Crispy bread Desert Sprite Every part of the Thali was delicious! If you eat meat they also have a wide range of plates including different types of meat. The person who takes orders was very friendly and he let me know that it would be about 20-25 minutes. Funny I was reading my old review and much hasn't changed maybe for the better this time. My five star review is strictly based on the lunch buffet. This location offers the most variety and it's always changing. Although prices have gone up, over $15 close to $20. Food always seems fresh. It seems if you go closer to opening, food is hotter. Don't expect much heat on the buffet but it still tastes delicious. Mmm yummy. It does get busy so plan your time accordingly. I could see them fill up fast. Service is quick and efficient. This is the first time I've been to a Nepalese food place here in Salt Lake City. When I went inside, the ambience of it is cozy and warm. The light is dimmed with lanterns above giving a low light affect. I went to the lunch buffet and I enjoyed variety of the food. There wasn't a lot in my opinion, but the food is savory and quite strong. I mostly enjoyed the butter chicken with the yellow fried rice. I thought it complimented together alongside dipping with the naan bread. I always go back to the same rice and butter chicken. They're so good! The taandori chicken was a big disappointment in here. It was like rubber to bite on and dry. I couldn't finish it. Hence, 4/5 stars. I couldn't leave the place without dessert! I tried the mango pudding, rice pudding and sweet ball altogether. The mango pudding has a strong kick to it, while the rice pudding has a light texture and flavor. The ball is overall too sweet for me. Out of all the 3 desserts, I prefer the rice pudding the most. One of the best Indian restaurants in the state. We love authentic foreign cuisines and often seek out new restaurants so as to get our fill of culture. Kathmandu fulfilled that urge for us. The Chicken Coconut Korma is my new favorite Indian dish! I have always loved Tikka Masala but I needed something different, yet just as delicious. That was this dish for me. I got a 4 spice level and it hit the spot perfectly (I like spicy). The Chicken Momos were also delightful! They are simple dumplings served with a spicy curry sauce (too spicy for my spice sensitive 7 yr old). But I loved it! The spring rolls are also delicious with those two complimentary sauces: one sweet (plum sauce) and one tangy (mint sauce). I can't wait to find myself back there! read more

I ordered paneer tikka masala and a cheese naan with a friend. We were both sorely disappointed. Kathmandu can do better than they did my last visit, but it's possible the quality went downhill over time. The food came out after what felt like an extremely long time. I was excited to dunk the cheese naan into the paneer tikka masala. Upon first glance, I immediately noticed that the cheese naan looked so pale and could barely pass off as cooked. Secondly, where were the spices on the naan that was in the description on the menu? I ripped the naan apart and found a thin layer of melted, shredded cheddar cheese inside. Could not find a single spice or herb. I think I ended up with an overpriced barely-there quesadilla wannabe. I was super hungry, so I was like, fine, not disastrous, but seriously underwhelming. Then I tried the paneer tikka masala. Oh dear. I am a HUGE fan of paneer. Add it to one of the most simple and basic gravy bases and you've got yourself a hearty meal. I scooped some rice on my plate and a couple of spoons of the paneer tikka masala over the rice. I took a bite thinking I would be relieved of hunger after a long day................. The paneer was burnt! B.U.R.N.T. The color of the gravy coated the paneer in such a way that it's impossible to tell right off the bat without tasting that the paneer was burnt. But when I chewed that paneer, I knew what had happened. That, ladies and gentlemen, was the first time in my life that I've ever had burnt paneer. Confirmed it with my friend that the paneer tasted absolutely burnt. We notified our waitress of the issues with our food. When I asked why there were no spices on the cheese naan, she looked confused and went to grab a menu to read what it said. Then she told us that the cheese naan is always made the way it was presented to us. Well... now I wonder what other descriptions on the menu are misleading and incorrect. Regarding the burnt paneer, she said that their chef makes paneer fresh every day (that's awesome!). BUT. But sometimes he makes mistakes like not watching how long the paneer has cooked for because he's busy doing other things in the kitchen. I really had to shake my head at that statement. The chef burnt all the paneer for the day because he was inattentive in the kitchen. Wow. That's not supposed to be a normal thing. The waitress said if they remake the paneer tikka masala or any other dish with paneer, it would taste burnt the same way......... because the whole batch of paneer for the day was burnt. The waitress took the paneer tikka masala and 3/4 of the cheese naan away. She took the paneer tikka masala off the bill and still charged for the cheese naan we didn't get to eat because she quickly swept the basket of cheese naan away. Jeez. I really hope my experience was a slip and not a regular occurrence. They need to step up their game. read more

When you first enter this place you wonder if you walked into a tent. Well just turn to your left and walk through the glass doors and you will walk into another world. The tables are all beautifully set and the ambiance was just right for Indian food. It's a fairly cozy place. I did a togo order. Only had to wait about 15 mins. When I placed my order I asked if I could get an extra container because I had to eat while out and about and when my food was ready she had remembered to give me a paper plate and utensils. Thought that was good customer service. The chicken coconut korma (medium spice level) was perfect. Probably the best I've had. The naan could have been a bit better. My husband and I had an anniversary last week and wanted Kathmandu. However, I don't go out due to the pandemic so he offered to drive all the way to SLC for take out. We had veggie biryani- medium (our absolute favorite), lamb curry- mild (2 or 3 of 7) for my husband and tandoori chicken- spicy (6 or 7) for me. The food was spectacular, as usual, and the spice level was perfect. We forgot to ask for a half order of the chicken (6 pieces) so our full order (12) provided leftovers for at least 5 additional servings. No problem...it's delicious even cold from the fridge. We've also enjoyed coconut Korma dishes as well as Butter dishes...chicken most commonly but I've never had a meat dish i didn't enjoy. I've had push-back at other Indian food restaurants and resent being treated like I don't know what spice level I enjoy. My husband is British, we've had much experience eating good Indian food, and we KNOW how spicy we like our food. No complaints at all! The food was ready when promised and packaged so that it all was still warm after a 20-minute drive home. I recently ordered take out from here. Though the order was wrong in more ways than one, what we received was quite good and I cannot complain about the quality. I ordered a coke and it was so flat and served in a coffee to go cup. I ordered chicken biryani and didn't receive it at all and I got beef tikka masala which I can't eat because I don't eat red meat. I will be calling about this and trying to rectify it. To be fair, I picked up the order late but for having been ready well before I arrived, I had hoped to have it be correct at least. It could have been my order why my main course was so bland (I ordered very mild), but the sweet naan was a HUGE disappointment. First of all, if I order it, I want it in front of me - not down at the other end of the table. But it was worthless anyway. It looked like they just took a paintbrush and dipped it into sugar syrup dyed red and stroked it across the naan twice. (See photos) Ridiculous. Indian Food is one of my favorite types of cuisine. I have eaten at almost every Indian Food establishment in Salt Lake, and Kathmandu Grill is always one I come back to when the craving hits (okay... real talk... It's like a daily craving for me). My addiction of choice is their Vegetable Coconut Korma, medium heat. If you're not into spice, stick mild. If you're adventurous, try the medium or hot-heat. I was once told by a man in a different Salt Lake Indian eating establishment that the hot heat would be too hot for me. Me, not appreciating being told what I can and cannot handle, went with the hot heat. It burned going in, and it burned coming out... but I sucked it up, drank lots of beer, got through it, told him the heat was "just fine", but really my veins were filled with lava. I've since learned to stick with medium heat at Indian establishments. Medium heat adds a nice kick - but it won't knock you down, light you on fire, and stomp on you until you whisper uncle under your breath. Any entree I've ordered at Kathmandu Grill comes with rice and naan. However, I sub the naan for the vegan roti bread - and they are happy to do it, no questions asked. This is one of the few SLC establishments that I have found that will provide BOTH (rice and naan) at no extra cost. This is a huge plus for me, as I always want both. Carbs are life. Kathmandu is conveniently close, and though Indian food prices are fairly standard across the board, Kathmandu seems to have one of the lower ones I've found (12.95 for my go-to entree, which includes rice and naan). In this last visit, I learned they have their lunch buffet up and running again. A couple years ago, I remember signs saying they were no longer doing lunch buffet...so I assumed it to still be the case. (Wrong). This will be an issue for me, as their lunch buffet will probs be my new regular pit-stop. Whateves, man. I have no problem smelling of curry for the rest of my foreseeable future. read more

The decor is nice and rich in warm colors and I liked the tapestries of Nepal. The menu is vast in options and each dish can be catered to your spice level. Here's what I tried: Daal Aloo Ko Soup - this lentil, potato and pea soup was spicy and delicious. Definitely something I'd get again. Chicken Coconut Korma - this is always my go to Indian dish. I love the spicy coconut flavor, and the chicken was so moist and yummy. Methi Fenugreek Lamb - I'd never had this Nepali dish before, and it was pretty tasty. Lamb is not usually my favorite meat, so I didn't enjoy it as much as the coconut korma. Garlic Naan - cooked perfectly with a ton of garlic. Make sure your dining companion has some too, or you'll be the only one with garlic breath. read more
