Happy new year!! As backstory I have been to 4 Gus's including the original. This location is in the suburbs near Detroit. Hours are minimal. Til like 8-9pm even on weekends so i have always done carryout or grubhub delivery. Its known for chicken. Get the chicken. Just like down south its served with a slice of bread. Reminds me of Sunday dinners at my Grandmas house. So why 3 stars? Because I have been to other locations i know Gus Fried Chicken. Its got a spice to it that no other spot can replicate. Somehow its tone down here. Just not the same. Good chicken, not great. Twice they were out of something I ordered. No call or contact for substitute. Desserts not bad at all but i don't remember them so that's not good. If you are in/around the airport area check it out but.. Yesterday, my family decided to try Gus' Famous Fried Chicken. We have driven several times by this restaurant and always say we have to check this restaurant. After seeing an ad on TV about their chicken sandwiches, we decided yesterday was the day to give it a try. Walking into the restaurant, we felt we were walking back in time. The decor was " Juke joint". and added a positive ambiance. The young black female who greeted and served us was awesome! Great personality and customer service! The cook came out of the kitchen as well to ask if our food was ok. These folks really wanted to make a good impression. We ordered chicken sandwiches, and they were great. The service was great! People were friendly and attentive. I ordered the 3 wings with greens and potato salad. My wife ordered the tenders with Mac and cheese and fries. My wings were small but very tasty. You could taste the seasoning in the meat. The potato salad was good. Greens could use some seasoning. The tenders were kind of dry with minimal flavor. I've had Gus' on my radar since they opened in Midtown Detroit a few years ago but I hadn't realized this location in Westland had opened until I was driving by a few weeks ago. I used to live not terribly far from this location and used to hit the Bray's across the street all the time but since my mom moved to Canton a few years ago I haven't been down this stretch of Ford Road in a long time. But there I was a few weeks ago, running some errands in the area. And as I passed it, I swear to you, I rubbernecked it so hard as I went by and realized what I was seeing. I had just picked up dinner elsewhere so it wasn't in the cards that day but the next time I was out even SLIGHTLY over there I made darn sure I placed an order. And of course, my mom wanted some too. So we were able to take advantage of the door dash group order for pick up. At our assigned time I ran in and scooped up our order and I was happy to find everything marked perfectly so I could easily pass on my mom's order on my way home back to Ann Arbor. By the time I got home it was a while later but I'm happy to report everything was still delicious. My husband and split a half chicken and a couple of extra sides. The hot sides (mac and cheese and baked beans) were still warm and the chicken still had a nice crunch. It's a bit on the spicy side but I wouldn't call it "hot chicken," just a touch spicy. The potato salad was also quite good. For dessert we got a slice of the chocolate chess pie and it was awesome. Wish we were a bit closer since there's nothing like a hot, fresh chicken out of the fryer but until then the takeout option was as good as it could be! Being from TX, I'm a huge fan of fried chicken, especially when there is an opportunity to get it spicy! I have heard many great things regarding Gus's Fried Chicken. Food: I got the spicy 3 piece dark meat with fried okra and coleslaw! The chicken was very oily, which can be a good thing but I think it might have been a bit too much. The spice level did not meet my expectations as I did not taste much spice at all. This was a bit disappointing to me, because I was expecting more flavor with the spice. The fried okras were also disappointing as it was not seasoned at all. It was just your typical okra with fried breading around it. I believe there are much better fried chicken spots out there compared to Gus's. Would I eat here again? Of course, maybe I'll try it in a different state this time to compare it. Service: The young lady who was taking the orders and serving the customers was very sweet and kind. Already love it here. At the Detroit location they stopped serving you so you place order at counter then sit down. Here in Westland you are served. We've been to a Gus' in the Houston area and this location is lacking a bit on the quality. Typically, when I see pickle spears on the menu I get excited because it's rare in Michigan. What we got was not pickle spears, it was more like pickle fries, but for $7.50, was not worth it. We also got the 3 piece plate. The breast was nice and crispy but the wing was soft and undercooked and we were one of two patrons in the restaurant at the time. No change...chicken cooked too brown and tasteless...just like the fried green tomatoes..that were dry...like they had been frozen. NO tomato moisture inside at all ... The search continues for epic fried chicken. This time, we ventured into Westland for some crispy, hot and spicy chicken. The mid-sized restaurant had an industrial/country feel with an exposed ceiling and poured concrete floor. The tables were all covered in red, green, or blue vinyl checkered cloths. The mismatched chairs added to the charm. It is as if a truck backed into a flea market and bought all the available chairs. A college game was playing on the TV mounted to the wall as guests streamed in and out of the restaurant. I ordered enough for both lunch and dinner, chicken thighs with coleslaw and baked beans. The chicken thighs were tender and had a crispy, spicy coating. They were very good but a tad bit too spicy for me. The coleslaw was exactly how I like it, sweet but not too soupy. Actually, it would have been great if there was more of it. For dessert, I enjoyed a wedge of coconut pie I had. It was sort of custard pie with toasted coconut. Have ordered twice from here, using Door Dash delivery. That makes it more expensive but it was a long work week and worth it not to go out. First delivery went well, and the chicken was good. Tenders were juicy and the regular chicken had decent flavor. Not great, but good enough for a return visit. This second order, though, was not good. The tenders were really dry, and the crust wasn't crispy, it was tough and chewy. The piece of bread they sat on was all dried out too, so possibly this was cooked beforehand and left under a heat lamp. I hesitate to order chicken because it can be dry. And it was! I ended up Throwing away two tenders as you really would not have been able to reheat them. Very disappointed, not sure I'll order from them again. read more

So, we called in our order of 8 pieces of chicken, 2 large sides (greens and mac and cheese) and fried pickles. It came to $36. Damn. For chicken? Ok. So we get there and see the sign out front that says, "Come for the chicken, stay for the beer." Sounds good! So we go in, seat ourselves at the bar...and wait. There was a dude behind the bar paying us no mind, who probably was the bar back, but still. A hello would work as a starter. However, since bar service sucked and we were already spending $40 on chicken, I went to grab the food at the cashier, and hubby went back outside. After waiting about 20 more minutes, my food was ready. Moral of the story? Order with 30 minutes wait time in mind. As I was sitting, I also noticed that the bartender took up her post and people were being served. The food? Really, really good. The chicken is super spicy and perfectly cooked, the fried pickles are some of the best in the city, the greens were flavorful and tender with a bite, and the mac and cheese was creamy, savory, and full of flavor. The fried chicken flavor was decent and as a little bonus has a slight kick of heat to it. Yum! The baked beans were very good. The Macaroni and cheese was good too. Portion sizes were also decent. Excellent spicy fried chicken - that's all you have to know. But you still want to know more, don't you? Ok, then. The atmosphere of this place says we have great fried chicken and all we care about is providing that to you. The atmosphere is rough and unfinished. The walls looks like they were scraped down and left unfinished. The ceiling is definitely unfinished - you can see the wood rafters. I don't think there's a single chair that matches. They try very hard to look casual and relaxed and that's what this place is. On the other hand, there are some nice fixtures, so it's an interesting contrast. Gerald was our server and he was fantastic. He explained what the restaurant was known for - fresh, hot and spicy fried chicken fried in peanut oil. He also told us about the specials and talked us into ordering an appetizer - fried pickle spears. He refilled our water regularly and offered lemon slices. We all ordered the chicken, of course, and I tried the mac and cheese and seasoned fries as the sides with mine. The pickle spears were great - nice and crispy and definitely in par with the best I've had elsewhere. But the star is definitely the chicken - it comes out with a dark smooth crispy brown coating - I don't think I've ever seen such beautifully fried chicken in my life. And it's definitely spicy, but just enough to make your lips tingle without burning them. If you want it hotter though, there's both hot sauce and pepper sauce on the table. The chicken comes served on a slice of white bread, ostensibly served as an accompaniment to your meal though it looks as though it's there to soak up the grease - if so, it's effective because the chicken isn't particularly greasy. On the not so great side, I wasn't particularly thrilled with either side - the mac and cheese or the seasoned fries. There wasn't much seasoning on the fries - and what there was seemed to be season salt. The mac and cheese was beautifully presented with grated cheese and some kind of red spice on top. And while it was perfectly adequate, it wasn't craveable. So next time, I think I'd stick to the chicken and get it to go. I didn't try the pie, but we were told they are all made in-house. They had chess pie, chocolate chess pie, pecan pie, coconut cream pie and sweet potato pie. read more

We have been here a few dozen times. It used to be enjoyable coming here. The service has gotten bad. The person at the counter had us pay (and tip) in advance even though we were eating in. It seemed convenient at the time, but we wished we skimped on the tip after the lack of service we received. I had to go to the counter for anything we needed. Absolutely terrible experience today at Gus'. Ordered a tender meal and a 2 piece dark meal, both were awful. The regular chicken pieces were super dark and didn't have a great taste. The baked beans had a gross taste and were slightly cold. The tenders were just flat out bad. Super soggy and tasteless. The worst part of the entire experience was definitely the potato salad which had severely undercooked potatoes. During the time of COVID cleanliness is even more important and this place was not sanitary. Overall very disappointed by our experience and will not be back. Went in with my family recently. You honestly can't beat the price for the amount of food and quality of food you get. I can see why their fried chicken is "world famous", because they really were that awesome. The batter wasn't so thick that it was overly greasy, there wasn't so much batter that made it felt like there was more batter than chicken. The pieces were cooked all the way through but still maintained its juiciness. It's not easy to be able to achieve all that, but they did it! The mac and cheese was good, not great. It didn't really matter to me since I was there for the chicken, not the mac and cheese. My kids liked it though, so I guess that's good enough for me. The greens were great, not excellent. It could use an extra dash of salt, but it's much easier to add salt than having it to salty to begin with. The food really was wonderful, the server was attentive during the meal, but the aspect of customer service that the host needs to pay attention to is when a group walks in. We had one in a car seat and a 3 year old. The host took us to the table and was about to walk away when we had to ask for a high chair. And since I don't expect them to have papers and crayons with the restaurant name on it, I walked with my son to the bar and asked, hoping they would have something, and they did! I don't care if it's a coloring book from the dollar store and the crayons aren't perfect, but I probably would've given Gus' 5 stars if they would've taken the extra 10 seconds to ask if we could use either of those. read more

I had driven by Gus' a few times and it was on my list to try. I stopped there after church a couple weeks ago. The place was pretty empty on a Sunday afternoon. I got the dark meat combo with slaw and baked beans. The chicken was fantastic... it was pretty spicy, and juicy as heck, with an excellent crispiness. I loved the milkshake we ordered. The slaw was passable, and the baked beans were excellent. But there's a reasons they're so popular, and it's the chicken. The service was mediocre, which made me torn between a 4 and 5 star review. We had children in our party, and nobody asked if we wanted a high chair or booster seat, and we had to ask for crayons and drawing materials to keep our toddler busy. But it wasn't enough to counteract the deliciousness of the chicken. I will definitely be back. read more
