I was hopping into the Aristocrat Lounge for a private event and after getting there a little too early, my buddy and I decided to hit up Happy Chicks for a quick bite beforehand. I've been to their location off 6th street, but I couldn't remember a thing. Here, I knew I wouldn't forget. Happy Chicks off Burnet is small. There's like 5 tables inside, and the line's path wraps around them. Their menu is simple. Chicken fingers? If so, how many? I ordered their Happy Chick with 3 tenders that I got spicy. All orders come with fries plus an extra side and a sauce. I got a side of their mac and cheese and some honey mustard. Chicken is an uphill battle especially if it's cooked shortly after ordering. 10 minutes later, and our food was served to us outside. The breading on those tenders was intense. They were crispy with an earth-shattering crunch with plenty of flavor. The spicy was not spicy whatsoever. Just a slightly more seasoned tender. The fries were crispy and a pretty standard affair at a local spot like Happy Chicks. The mac was a great side choice as I thought they did a pretty nice job with them as well. The prices were pretty fair with a chicken sandwich costing $9.99 and my 3-piece meal costing me a cool $12.50 There's so many chicken tender spots going around in Texas, but it's always cool to come to an Austin-localized spot to mack down on some poultry. Arrived for my first time here at Happy Chick. The sweet lady working was so nice and welcoming. I ordered the Classic Chick which is 4 tenders and fries with a fruit cup. I also ordered a sweet tea. The food was made fresh and I opted for 2 regular tenders and two spicy. We sat down with our drinks and waited for food to be made. The inside seating is quaint and there are 4 tables. Outside there are 6-7 tables along with some benches. It was wet from rain so we sat inside. We wasted about 10 minutes for our super fresh, super hot(temp) food to come out. The food was amazing. So good. The spicy was not super spicy but I like spice so beware. The fries were my favorite part of the meal. They had nice batter and were cooked perfectly. It's a chicken joint, with tenders, sandwiches, salads, and a decent variety of sides. I've often driven past it on my way to T22, and wondered whether to give it a try. Today, with a BOGO coupon in hand, I did. It's a counter-order fast-food type setup, but I thought it strange that the big menu board didn't mention prices. I had to search around to find that info, in a battered 8x10 frame on the wall. Hmm. $13 for a meal of 3 tenders and fries, with no drink or biscuit included? Seemed a bit much. I got mine to go, and asked for one order of original and one of spicy tenders, but at home, neither of us could tell the difference, so I guess they didn't give me spicy. The tenders varied in size from big to skimpy, but were fresh and tasty--though I would have liked to try the spicy type. The fries were also good, a nice medium cut, in between the dreaded shoestring and chunky steak fry. The sauces we got were good, but if you use a lot, looks like they charge "Just 99 cents!" for an extra tablespoonful. With my BOGO, the price seemed about right. But at their posted price point, (which seems designed to go up at a moment's notice) I'm much more likely to spend that much for table service and excellent chicken a few blocks further north on Burnet--or half that for Cane's or Popeyes, if I want to order at a counter and eat out of a box. read more

We were the only folks in the place at 6pm Thursday evening. Typical bar that serves food. On the good side lots of TVs to watch the soccer games. Sat at the bar thinking make it easy for the server. I ordered a happy juice (on their special cocktail menu) hubs orders rum and Coke. His came right way, mean while I wait and wait, We order food, still no drink. Sitting at the bar I see that there is some discussion about some part of the drink they are missing at the bar. Our chicken tenders; Hubs ordered little chick original and I ordered happy chick spicy. Food came and finally after a few bites my drink is delivered, no apology no acknowledgment that my drink took way too long. My "spicy" tenders were no different then my husbands original ones. Quick bite to eat at this small chicken shack. I got the happy chick which consisted of 3 tenders choice of original or spicy fries and one extra side; I chose a side of Mac and cheese. The tenders were very crispy and fresh. The tenders were seasoned well. I opted for the spicy tenders however, they were not spicy at all. I liked the flavor of the white Mac and cheese but unfortunately it was served Luke warm. The fries were good (I like battered fries). They have a lot of sauce options. I had the honey mustard which was delicious (tasted home made) and garlic ranch (good but wasn't super garlicky as I hoped). I'd recommend trying once to cross it off the list. Overall the quality is good but I wouldn't be coming back. Here's why. 1. The spicy isn't spicy at all. I'm now curious to see the difference between the regular and spicy. 2. But not curious enough to pay these insane prices. Seriously this is the most I've ever paid for 3 tenders and a chicken sandwich. And while good, there really wasn't anything special or unique about it that warranted such outrageous prices. 3. Service sucked. For these prices and having the word happy in your name, I expect joker smiles and energy. The dude did not smile, nor ask us if it's our first time, or explain the menu, or engage in any form. I get it, it's chicken tenders, I can figure it out but I have a feeling the sauces are a big selling point and may be the special thing about this place? Wouldn't know from this guy. 4. After looking at the many sauces and not receiving too much guidance, we decided on our safety ones - jalapeno ranch and chipotle ranch. Jalapeno ranch was pretty good. Chipotle ranch was a bit runny and the consistency did not work with the tenders. I saw some cool ones like Raspberry chipotle and avocado poblano but didn't get to try them. I wasn't going to review this place but I honestly think about this place too much not to. It's just living rent free in my head so it's time to put it down in words. We came in here 6 months ago on a Saturday afternoon around 1pm. After a while of not being greeted by anyone, someone at the closest table explained that it was seat yourself. Oh, okay cool. All good. We grab a table. It was a little over half full. We waited a bit and then realized it was all done via iPad. Cool. K. So we order on the iPad. It's priced at what you'd expect for the location. It gives us some tipping choices that ranged from 18-22% which was weird since I've spoken to literally zero employees since walking in. We tip 20% cause we always tip 20% or more. Why wouldn't we? We ask the bartender about Wi-Fi, she doesn't know but was really nice about not knowing. No big deal. A cook brought out our food. It was fine. Nothing to write home about but no complaints. I noticed all the chicken was the same. The spicy wasn't spicy. I see that's a common theme to this place. Still haven't spoken to anyone except the WiFi question. A few servers are walking around checking on people. Maybe it's changed in 6 months. But back then it was like they couldn't decide if they were a bar that served chicken or a restaurant with a bar. Either is fine but pick one. Working in service industry for years, it simply insulting to be asked to tip when there is quite literally no service. That's on the owners for 1. Not paying their employees more and 2. Not training their employees to be alert about what's going on in the restaurant. What was the point in my $9 tip going to a server I never spoke to? We got our own waters. Like. Absolutely *no* service. There's so many posts online about tipping cashiers and dashers and to gos and I always defend them. I finally found a restaurant that can't be defended. A cook was sent my order, they made my food, brought me my food- and a random server got $9 for it. My hope is that all the food tips go to the kitchen where it's deserved like Casino El Camino. There are fried chicken joints seemingly on every corner. Why drive out of the way? Well, I'm glad I made the trip. This entrant to the "chicken wars" is a worthy addition to the conversation. Everything on my plate was worth the price and I left nothing uneaten. The portions were on point. The fried chicken truly reminded me of childhood memories of the old chicken joints (KFC, Church's, etc.) when they were actually good...not the bloated, unreliable, and bland versions that exist today. There is a new fried chicken place on Burnet Rd. This is interesting because in the 2 mile radius, you have actually quite a selection of places to get fried chicken served. This new spot Happy Chicks is a small type operation, which took over this small building which ironically used to be a Church's chicken back in the day. This spot is serving chicken tenders, sandwiches, along with sides of mac & cheese, corn and many different dipping sauces. The store has a small counter where they take your order with 5 indoor tables and the rest of the seating is outside on their nice patio facing Burnet Rd. You can tell the orders are made fresh since it takes about 10-15min for your food to come out. The chicken itself is quite juicy and crunchy for its texture. They also offer a grilled chicken option if you prefer that. Sides are mainly seasoned fries (flour breading), Mac & Cheese or creamed corn. They offer a ton of different dipping sauces from multiple ranch flavors, gravy, buffalo, and blue cheese. Im kinda torn on the sauces, they were freshly made but almost so overpowering you barely taste the chicken itself. Fries were very meh, just nothing impressive with the flour coating they are cooked in. Mac & Cheese is decent for the small serving you get of it. This location is open late till at least 10pm on weekdays and has a large parking lot. It is a tiny venue place, so expect to be sitting outdoors when you order. Service was friendly and quick. I do love fried chicken and thought their chicken was certainly well cooked. I prefer the style where the breading is strong, and captures the flavor of it. Sides offered were just average, and prices were slightly a bit higher than I expected but nothing outrageous. Like I mentioned, there is quite a large choice list of fried chicken options just on Burnet Rd alone including a competitor only between this spot & the Aristocrat bar next door. This was a good chicken place, but not one of the better ones. We ended up eating here because we couldn't find many options for dinner at 9pm. I got the classic chick meal with half spicy, half regular chicken. The spicy chicken tasted the same as the regular chicken, I definitely wouldn't consider it spicy. The fries were very good, nice and crispy. The creamed corn was good, but it was very wet. The taste was good, but it was like eating a soup. I also got the gravy and jalapeño ranch for my dipping sauces. The gravy was so wet that I couldn't get it to stick to my chicken, the jalapeño ranch was pretty good but again, not spicy. It didn't taste good enough for the $16 price tag. The service was good and pretty fast. The outside of the restaurant was really dark, it definitely needed a light outside. It just wasn't what I prefer for seasoning on my fries. There was something 'sweet-ish' in the seasoning that didn't quite mix well with the Smoked-Bacon dipping sauce, nor with the Ranch. (And we all know nearly EVERYTHING goes with Ranch dressing. Lol!) And in case you thought you misread something, YES... There's a SMOKED-BACON dipping sauce!!! Came by in the late evening before close twice and both times the manager was super hospitable and helpful in answering any questions we had about the menu (it was our first time trying it).
