The fryers were down because of the storm the night before, which normally would have been a letdown, especially since my coworkers had never been to the original Nashville hot chicken spot before. But the staff handled it really well. They were fast, apologetic, and refreshingly colloquial, not stiff or robotic, just real people taking care of customers and keeping things moving. Since fried chicken was off the table, I went with the grilled chicken, and honestly it was excellent. Juicy, perfectly seasoned, and flavorful enough that it did not feel like a consolation prize. Maybe this was the universe giving my cholesterol a temporary reprieve. The collards were just okay and not the strongest part of the meal, but everything else made up for it. The restaurant itself was super clean, and you could tell this newer location is well cared for. At about two years old, it still felt sharp, polished, and well run. I've been to several Hattie B's locations over the years, including the original in Nashville, Franklin, and Atlanta, where I once saw a woman riding a horse down the street in front of the store, which remains one of the more unforgettable restaurant-adjacent moments of my life. The parking was a little wonky, with limited parking options in both the front and back, but I was able to find a spot at the tail-end of the dinner rush. I ordered the quarter bird dark plate, medium spice level, with pimento Mac & cheese. The Mac & cheese was creamy with just a hint of pimento peppers, and the fried chicken was hot and crunchy, although a bit salty and less spicy than expected. (Next time I'll probably move up a level to "hot".) My friend ordered a fried two tenders plate, also medium spice level, and fries. We enjoyed the crispy crinkle-cut fries with Hattie B's special seasoning. We chose the Nashville Comeback Sauce for our dipping sauce, which is like a mustard-ketchup-mayo aioli: pretty good! Hattie B's is a smallish national Nashville-Hot Fried Chicken chain. If you are going to be fussy about getting the absolute best Nashville-Hot Fried Chicken in town, you go to Tumbleweed 22. But Nashville-Hot Fried Chicken is generally good stuff wherever you get it. If you live in South Austin and you don't want to drive up to Lake Austin or down to San Marcos for a Tumbleweed chicken, the South Lamar Hattie's will do you perfectly well. I had the medium heat. They advertise sadomasochistic levels of heat using either habaneros or ghost peppers. While I did not try any of their burn-your-esophagus-out-plus-most-of-your-neck flavors, I am going to guess those are pretty good. My medium fried chicken needed something. More heat would have been a good idea. They have a Comeback sauce that is spicier than their other sauce offerings. The Comeback sauce had kick. It definitely improved the medium chicken. The greasy toast underneath the chicken at Tumbleweed is one of the true and deep pleasures of life. Here it is just greasy toast. Maybe I am getting jaded in my old age. The one unambiguous negative was the cheesy grits. Didn't taste like much. They were gritty in a bad way. Grits are supposed to be like Ralston cereal with some texture but everything soft. I think the grits could have taken more liquid in the cooking or more cooking time. But basically, this is an okay place. If I was to go back, I would definitely go for one of the blow-your-brains-out flavors. Have plenty of water on hand plus the starchiest side dish you can order that is not grits. My husband and I decided to stop by Hattie B's Hot Chicken while on our Ebike ride. We pulled into the parking lot and parked. We walked in through the back. I noticed an area outside with games, and some patio seating. We ordered all of our chicken with no heat or what they call Southern Style or no burn. The Waffles were delicious. They were belgian style waffles served with butter and syrup. They were super sweet and reminscent of a funnel cake. The Ultimate Chicken Biscuit was good. It comes with fried chicken, bacon, fried egg, and cheese but we ordered ours with No heat and No cheese. The biscuit was good, the chicken was a good size with a crispy exterior, the egg was okay, and the bacon added flavor. The Classic Biscuit was good. The biscuit was warm and soft on the inside with a brown semi crunchy outside. I got mine with strawberry jam. The Dirty Bird Fries were tasty. They came with fries, pimento mac, bite size chicken tenders, pickles, chives, and comeback sauce. The fries were somewhat crispy and with the pimento mac they eventually got soggy but that was expected. The chicken tender bites were good. They were a good size with a crispy exterior and a tender center. The pickles added texture and the chives added additional flavor, and the comeback sauce added a hint of spice. It was a good mix of ingredients and very filling. The fried chicken sandwich was yummy. It came with a piece of fried chicken, coleslaw, and pickles. We ordered ours with No cheese and No heat. The fried chicken was a good size with a tender interior and a crispy exterior. The coleslaw gave the sandwich flavor and the pickles texture. Normally, when I get to this part of town, I am concerned about parking, but there's about 30 slots here which means you'll most likely find a space even during the lunch rush. Lots of seating inside to the tune of about 20 tables and 11 more four tops on their patio outside facing Lamar. Every table comes with a roll of napkins which you will definitely need. You basically order at the counter where you'll face the tip screen and they'll bring it out to you. They do have frozen, draft and canned alcoholic beverages along with fountain drinks. If you like your chicken a little on the spicy side, I recommend you just get the medium level otherwise anything hotter is just torture. The chicken itself is fried in soybean oil. The crinkle cut fries are a good choice, although I prefer fresh cut home fries and the collard greens were decent. I have to admit it appears they have the right formula going for them, great product, reasonable prices, good service and nice dining area. Definitely a lunch spot I would return to. Rox: LOVE Hattie B's in any city. In my humble opinion it is one of those few famous places that actually isn't over hyped. We love SPICE and they never disappoint!!!! Love that this is one of the only hot chicken places that offers dark meat and not just tenders also. Get a liquor license and you won't be able to drag me out.
