Stopped in for takeout, and everything was solid across the board. Tried their fried chicken -- crispy, flavorful, and well executed. A cool touch I appreciated was them placing slices of bread on top, which helped keep the chicken crispy during the ride home. The sides were solid as well -- I especially enjoyed the collard greens. I picked up a 2 Piece Dark Meat with collard greens and mac n cheese togo. Very good chicken and sides with very comforting tastes and rays of delicious flavors all the way through. The chicken pieces had a nice brown, crispy skin with good spices. The chicken meat itself underneath the skin was very juicy, smooth and tender in every bite. You could tell they prepped it well. The collard greens were very moist, earthy, spiced and savory with a refreshing vibe all in one. Very tasty. Collard greens, celery, spinach and broccoli are my favorite green veggies, so had to get this one for sure. I was debating between the baked beans and mac cheese, but recommended mac bc it pairs better as a side with the greens. Very tasty, sticky, gooey, deep yellow in color n taste and seasoned well. Think of the 90s K F C mac cheese back when it actually tasted very good, but still even better from Gus's WFC regardless. Great, succulent jalapeños on a note too. I try to find a Gus' fried chicken wherever I can. This was the second location I tried. It is near the Texans stadium slapped smack in the middle of an otherwise unappealing shopping area. Don't let tha fool you because once you step inside you are greeted with exceptional service and mouth watering food. The food; fried chicken of course. I order the four piece with some fried okra and some greens. My momma would have loved this place. The restaurant is a welcome reprieve from the surrounding area and is clean and well maintained. Now, this is spicy chicken, but don't be a sissy. I don't like food so spicy you can't enjoy the actual food. This is just the right amount of spice and delicious juicy chicken. I've been to Gus Fried Chicken on Kirby close to the NRG stadium. I think I'll skip during FIFA unfortunately. Food is spicy mildly not Ghost Pepper or Jalapeño Hot but a nice burn. Spiced food is in vogue now even though it's been around for a while. Self seating on going inside they will find you quickly. A limited beer selection if you dine in. It's a stand alone place in a strip shopping center. The place gets busy at lunch time but they move very quickly . A lot of take out was seen. It got good rating in the local paper. The menu is limited to chicken so they don't try to be everything to everybody. The chicken came out hot (temperature) I got a plate. A plate is chicken - slaw - baked beans - white bread. Not fancy but flavor was excellent. They have other sides (Southern style). Sorry large breast (chicken) filled me up - I'm a lightweight anymore so I skipped the starters and desserts. Plastic utensils - pressed paper plates and plastic cups and plastic table cloths it isn't fancy its comfort atmosphere and food. Note they have another location on 1815 Washington Houston. I was on my way to Fiesta Mart when I found this location! I had to stop to try. We were a party of two, dropped in for dinner on Easter. We were promptly greeted by a friendly server. We ordered: 3 wings plate w/double fries 3 pcs dark w/Mac & cheese and fried okras one piece catfish - my only complaint, for $4 this was very small but flavorful The food was great, sports channel playing on TV's, everyone was friendly, plenty of parking, and clean restrooms. I have to say, I am surprisingly disappointed. I took the time to read about the Bonner's, while we waited for our order. First, the order was wrong. The young lady mentioned that she did not charge us for the one chicken strip, but can put it in. A 5 minute wait. As she hands me, our order. My wife does not eat chicken on the bone. We declined, due to our schedule. I did give her a piece of my chicken. She enjoyed the chicken. I can taste the flavor in the skin, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The breast was a little dry for me, but she enjoyed it. The wing was juicy, which I enjoyed. The fried okra was good. I like the bread with it, being country myself. One slice was fresh and the other slice not. The mac and cheese was horrendous. The noodles tasted like they were not fully cooked. One bite from each of us. The quality, does not match the price. Let's just say I can see why they are world famous for their friend chicken. We walked here from our hotel to get dinner since it was close by, and it was the best decision we ever made. The staff were friendly and ordering food was easy. We ordered our food to go, and it was prepared in a timely manner. I ordered the 3 chicken tender plate with coleslaw and beans. Every single item on that plate was delicious and super flavorful. My husband got the two piece dark plate and he really enjoyed his food as well. Definitely a family ambiance. What I really liked was when our food was packed to go, they included all items inside of the bag that may be need for the meal. We had ketchup, ranch, fork and napkins without having to ask for it. We tried fried okra, fries, mac and cheese, beans, greens, and slaw. The chicken was super crispy, juicy and flavorful but be careful that juice is like lava. Our favorite sides were the Mac and cheese, fries, and greens though honestly the okra was perfectly made. The potato salad and slaw and beans were our least fave but still really good. Our server Elyjah was super friendly and attentive. Our tea never got over half empty and he even gave us lids to take our tea home. We did order dessert to go but because we are stuffed, we'll have to eat it later. The Final Verdict: 6 out of 5 - Go to Gus's and try that fried chicken on the bone or tenders. How would I compare it to other Fried Chicken restaurants, it is slightly above average, but you be the judge. The chicken has good flavor and is tender and juicy. If you are not for the spice then think before ordering because Gus's chicken leans to the peppery side giving a bit of a kick. I preferred the wings so that is what I selected for my to-go order. Each meal comes with their signature baked beans, slaw and a slice of white bread. I traded my slaw for the mac and cheese. The baked beans were flavorful, but what makes me give this a 4 rating was the mac and cheese - I was disappointed. The cheese was present, but the flavor exited stage left. It was bland to say the least. For around $16 the portion size was just ok for this meal. This location sits across the street from NRG and is a perfect spot of looking for a place to grab a bite before a game or event, with a good amount of options on the menu. They have a pleasant team of people working there, which is a plus. The restaurant offers a clean atmosphere with a backyard/wanna-be sportsbar vibe. They offer plenty of parking and seating inside, but limited seating on their patio. If taking your food to-go, ordering is easy, but, be patient in waiting for your order especially if there's a line. For me, I received my order in about 10 mins. I didn't even know they were a chain until I started reading Yelp reviews. This location is in the MIDDLE of a parking lot, so it can be hard to miss. It is across from NRG off of Kirby (you can also access it from other streets if you are familiar with the area). It is located in the same parking lot as Fiesta. I hear the other Houston location can be packed with tricky parking, but you won't have that problem here. Parking is a breeze! Now, no one told me the chicken was a bit spicy, I don't handle spicy so well, but I could totally tolerate it! They have a la cart items, sides and plates. Also a kids menu and a desert menu.
