Gus's is just good fried chicken with simple tasty sides. I came in with my step dad and brother on a weekday night and parking was ample outside + we were seated immediately. It wasn't particularly packed and the lighting was fairly soft, which was nice. The waitress got our orders and drinks our fairly quickly and with a friendly demeanor. I opted for the white meat, so I had a couple of juicy chicken breasts with some Mac & cheese + mashed potatoes. Yeah, it was a bit carb heavy, but it all worked well together. While the breading definitely has some spice to it, it was fairly weak by my standards and wasn't an issue. Nor did it cause any issues later. My poor step dad got a concentrated seasoning bit and he was about beside himself, but even he recovered shortly thereafter. Overall it was a good meal at a good price with good service. It's hard to beat that combination. So if you like a little spice with your fried chicken, Gus's is a good option. read more

5 stars for Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken - WOW. One of the best meals that I've had in the area. I didn't try any of the chicken on my first visit, but did get to try the Catfish plate which was absolutely amazing. It was seasoned extremely well - and had a very nice spice and heat level to it. The fries were good and mac & cheese was excellent - super filling meal. Our server was very friendly and attentive and there's a ton of seating inside for dine in. I'd highly recommend a visit alone on the Catfish plate, but I will for sure be back next time I'm in town to try the fried chicken. read more

My buddy who has lived in Lee's Summit for 40+ years said this is the best chicken he's ever had in his life. It's pretty close to that for me. I still like Stroud's, but this might be a little better. It's spicy. It wasn't too spicy for me or any of the four of us. Though my wife and my friend's husband were both heated up a little, but said they would return. The beans were too sweet for me, so I got collard greens and they were delicious!! My wife's mac'n'cheese was top shelf! REALLY good!! Our lovely server was super helpful with suggestions and refills. We tipped her 30%. She was fantastic! I was kid free for the night and wanted something delicious and easy. Gus's had been in town for a little bit and so I decided to try it. I am not usually one who wants spicy chicken and had been told it was really hot. The night I went they had a special of two thighs, two legs, bread, coleslaw and beans. For 50 cents more I switched the beans to the potato salad the waitress recommended. The iced tea here is brewed which is always a win for me. For dessert I took home the sweet potato pie! Chicken was hot and super fresh. It was spicy but not kick you in the face, just I am gonna give you the sniffles for an hour. Lol. It was so juicy and tender and crunch on the outside was top notch. The potato salad had just a slight sweet kick but I liked it because it didn't have a bunch of crud in it. No chucks of celery or onion. The coleslaw was light and refreshing. It was a cream sauce but it was not under or over sauced. It was delicious and I am super picky about coleslaw. I ate the sweet potato pie at home. It was good but a little to sweet for me. Which is ok cause sweet souther pies are supposed to be that way. The texture was spot on and I would recommend it to others. Make sure to check your to-go order before you leave. I received 2 of 3 pieces of chicken, so I called, and I had to drive back for my other piece (-gas$, -time, food getting cold), or have a credit for 1 piece for 'next time'. In addition to that, the chicken was overcooked and dry, unfortunately, which makes me feel compelled to share this experience with my community. I never went to their other location, but this is a nice addition to Lees Summit. The service was quick, which unfortunately means the chicken wasn't cooked to order, but who wants to wait 20+ min for their order anyways. I wanted to love this place so much! We've been looking forward to it opening for so long The service was exceptionally slow. We were greeted and told we could sit anywhere. Then we sat and waited for about 15 min and finally had to go and find a waitress to take our order. The fried pickles were excellent, but the coleslaw was average, the fries were below average and the chicken was *extremely* dry. I ordered all white meat and my husband ordered dark meat. Both were super dry. The chicken looked great on the plate, but it wasn't juicy or tender at all. The spice level wasn't really what I would call "spicy" either but they do. Gus's is still in a soft, opening phase, and the sign on the door indicates they have limited menus and are still training their staff. Still, Laset did an excellent job of taking care of us last night. We both decided that a half chicken would be the best choice for us as, at $15.50 with two sides, it would provide at least two meals for us. First the entrée, it was tender and juicy. The crunchy coding was slightly spicy, but not too much. And I am a spice weenie. A bottle of Louisiana hot sauce is provided on the table to allow guest who want more heat-help yo selves! I also opted for fried okra and macaroni and cheese for my sides. Both were good choices. Our food was served piping hot and it was everything we could hope for in fried chicken- hot, crunchy, juicy, flavorful... in short fantastic! They also offer pieces of pie and/or whole pies. This was my first and last visit to Gus's Fried Chicken. I love good southern collard greens. The ones I ordered did not have ham hock or onion. They tasted chemically. The dark meat fried chicken tasted low quality and what ever dredge they use lacks a lot in flavor. Also ordered chicken tenders which lacked any kind of flavor. They tasted very spongy and made me think they were chopped chicken breast and not true tenders. The Cole slaw was very generic. The atmosphere is good, but not worth it since the food is lacking. We ended up leaving having only eaten less than a quarter of the food. It is NOT world famous as the sign suggests. They have such huge potential but just come up way short read more

Very best fried chicken in Lee's Summit, and a big contender for the best in all of Kansas City. It's a very close 2nd to Stroud's, without the wait. The quality of their chicken is amazing! The breading definitely has a kick, so if you don't want spice, opt for their tenders, which are coated with more like a batter. My recommendation is to skip the sides and instead go for the fried okra or the fried green tomatoes. (No slime to be had on the okra.) read more

Gus's has been in Lee's Summit for about two years and we love Gus's, however, a bit disappointed in the Lee's Summit location. We went during the week and there were only about three other tables occupied. The waitress was very nice and we ordered, as we knew what we wanted, and about two minutes later the food came out. The temperature was OK but obviously it had been in the warmer. The chicken was hard and very dry. The same thing happened the last time were went there. After the food came out, the manager and the waitress sat at the counter, with their backs to the tables, and it took forever to get a refill of water. Seemed more interested in their phones than providing service. I never see anyone at this business and just hope that changes are made so they can keep it going. I'm actually very impressed! I came here thinking it was going to be below average given the reviews, but it surpassed my expectations! Service was great! Keep in mind when you first walk in it's an open seating so just seat yourself. Fried chicken had a nice kick, it was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. OK...this review is based on a SOFT OPENING, so don't expect it to be stellar. Few places can be operating at 100% at a soft opening, and I totally took that into consideration for my review. We visited Gus's in Memphis, TN some years ago and fell in love with the chicken. There was a long wait for it in Memphis, but we'd rather have it good than fast...and they didn't disappoint. The wait at the new Lee's Summit location wasn't nearly so long, but the chicken was at least 90% on par with what we had in Memphis. It wasn't as spicy (to my dismay), but it was incredibly flavorful. The outside was crisp, but not layered in coating. Delish! So now I've gotta talk about the improvements that I know will eventually come: Neither my friend or I got the correct order. She checked her bag as soon as we got in the car, and it was the wrong pie. We went back in, and they very promptly and cheerfully corrected it. When I got home and my hubby opened the bag, I was confused. Rather than the 3-pc all white plate I ordered which included 2 sides and bread, we had an 8-pc mixed with bread and no sides. I had homemade sides in the fridge, so no harm done. Again...SOFT OPENING. Mistakes will be made. Back to the plus side so I can end this on an up note. (1) The sweet potato pie I ordered WAS in the bag (hooray!), and it is DELICIOUS!!! We will try the pecan next time. (2) The atmosphere is family friendly and nice. (3) The staffers were all trying VERY HARD and they were quite pleasant despite being a little lost on procedure. I can tell they are going to get into the groove and make Gus's one of Lee's Summit's BEST restaurants. We welcome them with open arms...and mouths for that DELICIOUS fried chicken!!!
