The food at Gustav's is so good! The dishes were prepared perfectly except for a few items. My friends and I ordered a variety of things from the full menu and happy hour menu. The fondue was perfection as always! My friend ordered the bier sausage from the happy hour menu which comes with caramelized onions, which are a great compliment to the sausage. Unfortunately, there were only a couple onions on the plate, no where near enough onions to enjoy with each bite of sausage. I ordered the Prime rib sliders. These looked and smelled amazing. The perfect slider brioche buns, crispy French fried onions, and the prime rib was really good and tender. There just wasn't enough horseradish creme on the sliders to taste. They seemed dry. Could we have asked for more of the onions? Yes, would they have charged for extra since it was on the happy hour menu? I don't know. I could've asked for more horseradish, but that is not the point. When i order food i want it correct when it is delivered to my table. Why do i have to delay in eating my meal because it wasn't prepared correctly? How long would it have taken to fetch more horseradish? Too long. It's about the details. The other dish that was ordered was the Hungarian Jaeger schnitzel. It was perfect and looked perfect. Which begs the question, is the happy hour food given less love from the kitchen? It's still delicious, but less care given in preparing and plating. Details matter. I ordered the berry cider, it came room temperature. I had to get a side of ice for it. Both of my friend's beers were not very cold. Nothing worse than warm beer!! I love Gustav's, the decor and design of the restaurant is done so well. The beautiful stained glass wall in the bar is a work of art. This review is meant to help this restaurant, not to deter diners from eating here. I want to see Gustav's succeed. Been to Portland twice this month and this is a place to go for German food. The schnitzel here is unbelievable. It's like I'm back in Germany again reminds me of the black forest / Oberdorf to pinpoint a flavor. I hit this place late on a super rainy Thursday. I was seated in the bar section, at a small booth. Service was friendly and efficient and all the staff were wearing masks. Instead of a menu, you were given a slip of paper with a QR code that linked your phone to the menu. I ordered the Pork St. Moritz schnitzel, which was a huge breaded pork cutlet topped with ham and melted cheese. It was delicious, my only complaint was that the ham and cheese didn't cover the entire cutlet. That might be the way they make it here, or it was a bit off center. I'm not sure, but the bites that had the cutlet with the ham and cheese were heavenly. It came with a rich wine-based sauce that was a nice addition. My entree came with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. The potatoes were just okay, but the cabbage had a nice sweet/sour flavor that was delicious. The service was good, and refills on my drink selection came without me having to ask. The atmosphere was cozy, and once restaurants open for on-site dining again in the region, I recommend this location of a favorite local restaurant chain as a cozy place for a meal. read more

This was a good dinner in a fun restaurant. The service was excellent and the food was delicious and portioned well. As one might expect from a German restaurant, there were a lot of good beers on tap. I had the chicken schnitzel and it was a generous portion served with a delicious braised cabbage and mashed potatoes and served in a nice Madeira sauce. It included turkey, stuffing, cranberry, pork loin with a topping, Brussel sprouts, mashed potatoes and gravy, sausage and sauerkraut. Our last visit to this restaurant. We called days in advance and asked to make a reservation for 5 adult. We were told that no reservation was needed for party of 5. Showed up and they sat us at a small booth and added an extra chair on the end. It was way too small for all of us. There were several large tables and large booths empty so we asked to be moved. They told us those were already reserved, but we were told no reservation needed. The guy said yeah that was me who said that. They moved us to a corner booth that was not much bigger that the booth. We accepted it because it was a long drive and because on mothers day we waited 2 hours to be told that no more guests were going to be seated because the kitchen staff was 2 hour behind in completion of orders. I'm not really into German cuisine but this was some of the best I've had. From the rosemary cheesy bread to the meatballs and breaded chicken all of it was amazing. Was here with my GF family and everyone enjoyed everything they had. The fondu was the star my lady had a jagerita which was surprisingly good hence I'm not a fan of jager lol. We went to the Vancouver Gustav's for my daughter's birthday on August 5 and we're seated just before 8:00. The food was was good and The Server was efficient and polite. Ordered a bottle of wine and a couple of drinks . We enjoyed dinner and ordered dessert soon after, which was served promptly. We were halfway through dessert when some guy (not the manager) cruised past at a quick pace and said "you people need to be leaving soon, restaurant is closed." Wow. Just wow. Not even a polite, "how was you dinner?" They call it the "Hospitality" business for a reason. We went to Gustav's for Mother's Day brunch and were surprised they didn't have Mimosas. We can go elsewhere when it's time to celebrate an occasion and be treated like guests, not trespassers. I've been coming to Gustav's since I was a kid and the atmosphere and food is always amazing! I went recently with my girlfriend and the atmosphere and food was just how I remembered! HOWEVER, we found the service at this restaurant to be a little poor . Upon being seated in the bar area, the waitress poured water for us which was room temperature. (Which I realize isn't a big deal and perhaps some people like it that way.) When the waitress returned I politely asked if we could have some ice water. She said she would bring it and allow us to look at the menu. It seemed like our server was distracted or just had too many things going on. The server forgot to bring the water when we saw her next and we had to ask again for cold water. (Again, not a big deal. The waitstaff are busy and it's easy to forget things. ) She also came up to the table a little bit after we had ordered and asked if we had ordered dinner yet. (Which isn't necessarily a bad thing to double check on. It just seemed like our server had a lot going on. Which I don't blame her for considering how busy that job can be. And I don't want to be too harsh because we don't know what she may have going on outside work as well.) Once we had finished eating, the waitress brought us the bill and took away the plates. After she walked away I noticed that the bill was about 40 dollars less than it should be. We had been given another person's bill with completely different items on it. Instead of throwing down our cash and bolting out the door, we stayed to ask the wait staff for the correct bill so we could pay in full. We were soon after given a different bill which looked more correct. We then put more cash down to pay as well as for a tip. My girlfriend and I then stayed a little longer at the table to finish our desert and drinks. The waitress came back a couple minutes later with ANOTHER bill explaining that she had not added the desert to the bill and needed another 50 cents. (Even though we had ordered the desert before the first bill was delivered!) I guess I was just surprised that after several mistakes with the bill were made already, the waitress thought it prudent to bring us yet another bill to collect 50 cents. Once again, we put down more money with enough for a tip and left the restaurant. In total we received 3 different bills and it wasn't acknowledged that we had stayed to do the right thing and pay the correct bill. read more

Service was good, atmosphere is nice. I loved Gustavs growing up and have continued going whenever I get a chance to. They have now changed the menu for the second time in the last few years and got rid of all the stuff my girlfriend and I would get every time we came. The chicken schnitzel Parmesan with pesto spatzel was our go to. And the Shepards pie as well. The fondue is also thinner than it used to be now that they changed the menu. They also no longer have the pesto fondue which was awesome. After the first menu change, it was disappointing as well to see the spatzle alfredo was taken off the menu. I'm sure people will still like this restaurant but they changed what I loved about it and now I can't see myself going here much anymore. The menu has been Gordon Ramsey'd and made smaller which I'm sure is an attempt to modernize, but I'm not a fan of it. RIP to the OG Gustavs. read more

Met a friend here for dinner on Friday after work. Haven't been here since it changed ownership and what a difference! We shared the fondue bread and sausage appetizer and we were off to a great start. For the entree I ordered the stuffed cabbage rolls. Oh my, they were SO good! Nothing was left on my plate, not a crumb! Would loved to have sampled dessert but I was much too full.
