Went here for lunch on a weekday with a couple co-workers. It was quick, easy, and delicious. The restaurant is pretty small and only a couple tables, so I suggest ordering to go if you have somewhere else to eat the food. You order and pick up at the counter. We waited in line for probably two minutes and it was another three minutes to get the food during the lunch rush. We all got the spicy combo over rice which consists of chicken and lamb over orange rice with a small salad and veggies (onion, jalapeño, others that I can't remember). Everything has white sauce on it and I remember tasting a faint amount of mint. Apparently this is afghan style. The platter Has more veggies and better tasting sauce then what I was used to from the halal food carts outside of Rutgers Camden. The meat wasn't as good thought. These chunks of lamb were big, and the chicken wasn't seasoned like it is on the food carts. It was still A-1. I'll definitely be coming back. Five stars. read more

Visited Gyro Express for lunch during a work trip to Trenton. Had a bit trouble finding parking when I visited for an early lunch on a weekday, but it was worth it! - Food: The food was absolutely delicious -- the best Falafel I've had in a while. I ordered the Falafel Platter (Falafels, Seasoned Rice, Pita Bread, Salad, White Sauce, Spicy Seasoning) ($8). The falafels and all the food was fresh, tasty and well seasoned. They gave a well sized portion with a variety of food that was filling and hit the spot! They even gave me a free small container of hummus when I inquired about the Hummus. I also ordered a side of their Specialty of the Day, which was Chickpeas ($3), essentially it was seasoned Chickpeas in a vegetable broth, delicious as well! The food was made quickly as well. - Customer Service: In addition to the food, the other highlight of Gyro Express was the customer service. The owner who was staffing the counter was very friendly, attentive and helpful. He explained different dishes and even offered a free small container of hummus to try out. While waiting, we chatted a bit and he told me about his background and how they cook the food. What a great experience with delicious, hearty and reasonably priced food! We ate at Gyro Express on the recommendation of staff at the Old Barracks. It was utterly delicious! We had a lamb rice platter and a combo lentil/chickpea rice platter. My boyfriend said the lamb was the best he's ever eaten, and my chickpeas were in some kind of magical sauce. We pass by Trenton on the highway but never have stopped. We will for sure time our next trip to stop again at Gyro Express. In addition to the delicious food, the entire staff was friendly and delighted we loved our meals. read more

Gyro Express is an Afghan gyro shop on the old pedestrian mall section of West State Street, Trenton, NJ. It has a menu limited to about a dozen items all related to beef, lamb, chicken and falafel pita wraps or open platters with basic salads. The primary owner is the face of the business, and he has a warm and polite persona. He is a great salesman. I went with a combo plate of grilled chicken, beef and falafel, that included a small iceberg based salad and a bed of yellow rice. It was covered in a nice white dipping sauce and small side cups of a spicy green colloid that added a hot dimension to the meats. The lunch was okay. There was ample protein, well grilled and tasty when mixed with the sauces and rice. Didn't see the spits that they may have been cooked on, and didn't smell that savory aroma that is so pleasantly addictive. I left most of the rice behind to avoid unwanted carbs, but enjoyed the small slices of meat and crushed falafel. Gyro Express is a worthy option in the State Street food carnival, but not nearly the excellent Afghani delights found just across the Delaware in Morrisville, PA, where Afghan Kabob holds court in the Morrisville Shopping Center. Worth a long lunch hour walk over the Calhoun Street Bridge to sample ethnic dishes on a different order of magnitude. read more

In the heart of a dying city, the only redeemable quality is the food and this place does its best to keep quality alive. Food 3/5 I ordered the combo platter of chicken and lamb over rice. I am well versed in the chicken over rice world, seeing as I went to Temple University and during my college years I was comprised of 40% chicken over rice and 60% over priced tuition. Anyway, the chicken wasn't seasoned to my liking but it held its own, it was definitely fresh chicken. The lamb however, had a perfect crispy crunch. And NO grease! The rice was very fresh and seasoned well, a good balance. It comes with a few slivers of pita bread and some sliced pickled jalapeños, as well as a fresh yogurt sauce. Service 5/5 Upon walking in, you will meet the owner of the establishment. He's kind and he serves with a smile. I ended up spending a good time just talking to him and he's definitely a man of principle. The people he employs are all equally as nice. Ambience 4/5 It's a clean but tiny shop, nestled on West State Street. So don't expect much seating room. The menu is very tiny, maybe 12 items all together? There are not enough positive adjectives in the dictionary to describe this place. I work nearby and eat there for lunch or get take out at least once a week, usually twice a week (sometimes three times). I've eaten most of the dishes. First, the meat is cooked and spiced perfectly. I wish I was a food critic so I could properly describe it. Just cooked to perfection. You receive a ton of meat too. The chicken and lamb are always out of this world. I usually get the salad platter. They also have a regular platter that comes with rice and salad. The green sauce that comes on the side is amazing for dipping the meat in. The gyros are delicious. The samosa is delicious. The baklava is so good. The food comes out fast. I've seen the line out the door to the sidewalk and within a minute you're at the counter ordering your food. The place runs like a well oiled machine. It's actually pretty amazing. Finally, this restaurant is owned and operated by a wonderful, charming family. They are some of the nicest people I've ever met. They only take cash and one if the first few times I forgot and they told me to take the food for free. I paid them back next time but I think they legitimately intended to just give me the food. Little things like that make the difference. Plus the owner, Abbas/head chef, always makes a point to say hi when I visit and chat with me a little. Through our conversations I've discovered that he is a very experienced chef with a long background in the food service industry. It shows. He's taken everything he's learned over his career and applied it to Gryo Express, with the result that everyone that eats there loves it. Food: I ordered the Chicken Rice combo which includes yellow seasoned rice, chopped chicken, lettuce, cucumber, tomato and a side of pita bread. To complete the meal, I added white sauce, paprika and a spicy green sauce which I highly recommend. After the first bite, I knew I made the right choice for lunch. We were visiting the area and found this place on Yelp and decided to get monster plates. Called in orders Thursday evening around 6:30 but was told they ran out of rice to make a monster plate. Got gyros instead. They were so good with the right balance of veggies and meat. Tzatziki sauce was a perfect consistency. Nice people and good customer service. I did a takeout of the falafel platter and it was good. It had crushed/ sliced falafel, rice, salad, white sauce and mint chutney. The falafel tastes nice and crispy. Few notes: It is cash only. Opposite to the T-mobile store. You don't get the whole falafel balls rather it is crushed/ sliced. I guess if you request, they may not crush them. They don't add the hot sauce(Red hot sauce like the halal guys). If you ask for spicy food they will just drizzle some red chilli/ cayenne pepper along with some jalapeños. read more

So darn good! Picked up 2 chicken rice and 1 mixed rice and both were hot, fresh and delicious. The meats were very flavorful with a hint of spice. Definitely get the white sauce and paprika.
