I love Gyro King! It's literally a food truck parked in the lot of a Chevron gas station off of Almeda and Old Spanish Trail. I always get the lamb over rice with both the red sauce and the yogurt sauce. The red sauce isn't too spicy, so your mouth isn't on fire and you can still taste your food. I like that it comes with a side salad. All components are seasoned well, and prepared properly. The portions are big enough to split into 2 meals. When it's really hot or bright out, they'll set up a tent for their patrons to stand under, and I really appreciate that. Beware of long wait times! It's been as long as 30 minutes sometimes, but on average wait time is around 10-15 minutes. read more

I've been wanting to check this place out given how many stellar reviews it has. I was not disappointed. The lamb and rice was a lot of food for less than $9. I walked up and was served super quick, so that's a bonus. The only reason for giving it a 4 rather than a 5 was that some of my lamb was pretty crunchy little pieces, likely small over done pieces due to the fact that I got there at 8pm, so the lamb was probably sitting on the grill longer than if I came earlier when it was busier. Best Halal I've had in Houston! The food-truck appearance definitely had me skeptical but everything I've had at Gyro King has exceeded my expectations. My favorites are the lamb gyro and the chicken over rice. There are enough food options so that you have a variety but not too many options to be indecisive. Easy to find location, just off old spanish Guy in the truck was nice, food came out in a timely manner Price and quantity was good, but what's important was the quality. I love that Gyro King serves it with cucumbers (i never had it at any other places) - I personally love cucumbers because it gives that refreshing taste in your mouth. The chicken was marinated very well and the whole chicken over rice just came together very well. I won't take off a star but one thing I did not like was the hot sauce, it was basically buffalo suace, nothing special. I won't take it off because I don't really add the red/hot sauce to chicken over rice dishes anyway, so it's not a big deal. I got the chicken and lamb over rice with white sauce on top then extra on the side and hot sauce on the side, my total came out to $10.69 (bc the 0.69 service charge - there are signs of the service charge so that wasn't a surprise). I have had Halal Bros in Austin, TX before and that has to be my one of my fav halal food (more than Halal Guys) so I compare all others to HB. I really like their white sauce, has a bit thicker consistency and is a bit more ranch tasting than HG and HB. Their chicken and lamb is really seasoned did not think either was dry. Love that they use romaine lettuce & cucumbers. The portion is amazing -- they give you so much for the price, definitely bigger portions than HG and HB. My cons would be that there's not enough rice provided compared to the amount of chicken/lamb, some people prefer more meat to rice so this isn't a big deal. Some people have been saying the rice isn't as flavorful as HG but I don't mind bc it's not as greasy as HG and I like that. I agree with everyone else, the hot sauce taste like tobacco not exactly a great mix with this so I recommend getting it on the side and tasting to your preference. Plain and simply I love this place! Located in the Medical Center, this place has some of the best chicken/lamb over rice I have ever had. I was interested to try this place after I tried the famous "Halal Guys" in NYC. Let's just say Gyro King is absolutely amazing and competes with the best of them. Both the chicken gyro and chicken over rice are delicious. We always get extra white sauce. Portions are usually big but sometimes the amount of meat varies. If you are looking for gyro/lamb over rice this is the place to be. Jones tends to be oily and not as much taste as Gyro King. I've also had Halal Bros in Austin a few times and I believe this to be better. The food is made of good quality items and the customer service is great. If you have a big order or coming during lunch (when it tends to be busy) you can call ahead and the owner will have it ready for you. The juice is actual fresh vegetables, the taste might not be so great at first, but it'll grow you after a while. I had a few cousins from around the country and overseas over and I took them to try this place and they were amazed. This includes one from NYC who craves this type of food all the time.
