Tried this place for the first time today and I loved it! The katsu and udon are so good! The waiter told us that they make the udon in house! It is so soft and chewy, I highly recommend. First of all, this is not a Sushi place. I walked into the place around 3 pm. There was only one table that had people. There was no Sushi Bar. There was a sign that instructed me to wait to be seated. I waited for what seemed like an eternity, and finally, a young white guy came out and told me I could sit wherever I wanted. I didn't see a single Asian anywhere. Then I was given a one-sheet menu. The prices were decent, but the only thing on the menu was Sushi Rolls. The waiter seemed more interested in the blasting country music with his cell phone connected to the restaurant entertainment system than he was in waiting on me. Finally, he came over and took my order. I asked for a beer, and I was told that since they didn't have a beer and wine license, so they could not serve alcohol. Bummer. Then, I asked if they had Yellow Tail Sushi, and I was told that I could order Sashimi, but there was no actual Sushi available. Ok, so I ordered the California Roll and a Roll that had Yellow Tail on it with some sort of sauce I could dip it in. Oh, they had metal chopsticks, and I thought that was a nice touch. Anyway, I tried dipping the yellow tail roll in the sauce, but it didn't taste very good. The California Roll was edible but not very tasty. Since I am a sushi aficionado, I cannot recommend this place for those who want Sushi. If you like Sushi Rolls, then you might give it a shot, but I wouldn't expect much. Amazing. This was my first time trying hot pot and it did not disappoint. We had one order of the Wagyu, hot pot and one order of the Wagyu hot stone. The restaurant is small, but very nicely decorated and very clean and new feeling. Service was very good. Portions were bigger than I expected. I was thinking since it only comes with 4 ounces of Miyazaki A5 Wagyu per plate that it would not be very much food, but I was definitely wrong. Portions were very good. Plenty of food for two. Especially the hot pot. We also had the Gyoza appetizer which was also very good and the udon noodles are handmade. They give you a large assortment of sauces and wasabi salt. All of them were very good. Honestly, not one thing I could criticize and considering $40 a plate isn't exactly cheap for the quality taste and atmosphere. It was well worth it. Their food is very odd expensive and not what you think you would get in that type of restaurant. The shabu shabu comes with so little meat you could put it all at one fork in a bite. The Dashi broth absolutely tasteless. Tempura fried shrimp udon noodle bowl same thing. The broth is tasteless. You couldn't get enough soy sauce, ginger seaweed salt wasabi in it to give it any flavor at all. They have a few sushi rolls that aren't bad. The best one was the cheapest one which is 895 fried California roll best out of the three we tried. And be careful with the sauce they saw some so heavy you have to push part of it off to taste your sushi. And they told me that was light. The other chef doesn't worse than that, but there was so much they must've put a half a cup on each roll. . Not a place will ever go back to. Came away hungry a few hours later definitely not getting your moneys worth for an $80 bill of bill for two people. Good luck to him, but I don't think they're gonna be there long cause they will not see us again. And as far as the ambience goes is wood panel I guess they just redecorated and has a mild smell of plywood. Our first time here. We got the hot pots and the wagyu beef. Omg the Wagyu beef is soooooo good. (Don't over cook it in the hot stone) I just gave it a nice sear and it's melt in your mouth. My daughter and I opted for the hot pot experience, eager to indulge in what sounded like a wonderfully curated meal. The waitstaff was attentive and kind, although we were the only patrons in the restaurant during our visit. We began with the salmon carpaccio and tempura-fried purple potatoes. It was so overpowering that I eventually put it out, though the pot stayed hot regardless. My daughter experienced a similar issue with her Shabu Shabu. The broth was again thin and flavorless, requiring a heavy hand of soy sauce just to make it palatable. She ended up with a bowl that tasted more like watered-down soy sauce than the delicately balanced broth we had imagined. The udon noodles were perfectly cooked with a lovely texture, but sadly, the broth's lack of flavor overshadowed their quality. Though I could see a hint of red in my hot pot, there was no detectable spice--just more of that wateriness that left us both horribly disappointed. We spent over $100 for the two of us, and I left feeling genuinely disheartened and a bit angry. As a former restaurant owner, I understand the challenges of running a successful dining establishment, and I truly want Gyu Jinya to thrive. My critique is not meant to harm but to encourage improvement. After reading the favorable reviews, I couldn't help but wonder if other diners had simply not ordered the hot pot, or perhaps were unfamiliar with what a robust, flavorful Japanese broth should taste like. This is my second time ordering lunch from Gyu Jinya. I was really excited to have a Japanese restaurant in the AV. Today I was looking forward to trying the creamy curry udon with potato cream. But they ran out or didn't have it while fulfilling my order. So I ended up choosing the Curry Katsudon lunch special ( I had Tonkatsu Pork Plate so I knew the curry Katsudon would be good). The order came in a timely manner and was still hot. Everything was packaged well and all in all 5/5. I really do hope I can try the cream curry udon soon. Came here to try the fried oyster - was ok. The wagyu ribeye cooked on stone pot - was good. The soup pot added ribeye and pork belly, ribeye was dried and chewy so I'll stick with pork belly next time- tonkotsu soup was good but overall it was ok. I did a pick up order for Udon and the Tonkatsu plate and wow it was so good! I loved how the soup, noodles and the meat tasted so yummy. I usually do not like pick up orders for the udon (at other places), but this one was good even when I got home. The Tonkatsu plate was also really good. The reason why I'm giving them a two star is cause their "service" and "menu" can be confusing. My friends and I have given this place three chances but it's always either "oh, it's not lunch time," or "it's weekday only," or we've "sold out" without ever having served us the order. It's unfortunate cause we really wanted to like the place but three times of having to settle is not our cup of tea. So to start, we had the gyoza which was really good and fresh, with a yummy dipping sauce. Then we decided to get the Shabu-shabu which is basically Japanese hot pot, with Miyazaki A5 Wagyu. Also we decided to get the hot stone with the Wagyu. Got the purple sweet potato tempura and the udon noodle soup as sides. I believe the noodles are handmade. There was also a selection of really tasty dipping sauces including wasabi salt for the meat. This was my first time trying meat cooked on a hot stone. And the meat cubes cooked in like 45 seconds! It was so mouthwatering. The meat practically melted on your tongue. The hot pot was also delicious with the meat so tender and a good selection of veggies. It was pricey but so worth it. The restaurant is a great addition to the AV. We had the 8 oz wagyu and Mont Blanc matcha dessert. I've never had Wagyu before. It melted in my mouth and brought with a 650 F stone to cook on.
