The service was great though, our server was really kind and attentive. The food was delicious, with generous portions and reasonable pricing for Tonkatsu. I got the cheese one and loved it, and my husband's udon was flavorful. I also added spicy tuna roll on the side with my set, and it was also delicious. The food is genuinely good. In look at this dish as the Japanese replication of a cordon Blue but with chicken and no ham. Served with cold sides that was perfect for a summers day. One bit of the crispy chicken katsu and it was perfect. read more

We ordered 3 sushi plates and she only gave us one soy sauce tray so my sister kindly asked if she could get her another one and Isabel replied "I already brought this one for you". Mind you, 3 of us ordered our own sushi rolls and she was expecting us all to share one sauce tray reaching over eachother??? Besides that, it's just not sanitary either. Most sushi places usually give each person who orders sushi an individual soy sauce tray. The shabu-shabu was ok but the soup wasn't that good and the tiger dragon rolls were drenched in the sauce that made it insanely sweet, over-powering the taste of everything else. All the sushi was brought out on one plate and she didn't even bring an extra plate for me to eat on and I didn't want to be met with her attitude again so I just didn't ask her for a plate. I love this little gem - they have very good food; it's just a neat little place. This is a place you should go as we don't always have a lot of great choices in the AV - but this is a good one!!! This place is so cute on the inside with little whale lanterns. The lady who served us our food was so sweet! Also tried the shabu shabu with steak and while it was good the broth was a bit bland. Tried plenty other places for shabu and shabu and usually broth has some flavor. Inside there was cabbage,carrot,corn,enoki mushrooms, yam and lettuce. Not a lot of udon. Chili paste is $1 extra. The ambience was lovely and the service was good and timely. We came here for some decent Japanese food, and I was a bit skeptical because AV isn't particular the home of a wide diversity of Asian food compare to down in LA and OC. However, it didn't disappoint. We ordered some appetizers, and the gyoza and katsu stick were pretty good. The texture was crispy and flavorful. The main star of the show was the Angus Sirloin Tip Gyukatsu Zen. I loved the taste, texture and smell of the sirloin. The food was sooo good and even better with great company. This place is such a good find! The service was excellent, we were checked on continuously but not an annoying amount, the people were polite and kind and the food came out pretty quickly but not too quickly that it's concerning. The ambiance is peaceful and feels very authentic and traditional of Japanese cuisine. For appetizers we got the shoestring potato shrimp and the bbq vegetable egg rolls. Both were cooked really really well, so good and tender and crispy and delicious. For our main course we split the Nabemono soup, spicy with miso broth and shrimp, and the 12 oz angus New York strip gyukatsu. While the meat was pretty good and the sauces they provided were good, the soup was the real star of the show, the udon noodles were perfectly textured and there was so much flavor. For dessert we had the Yuzu cheesecake, it was small but we were so stuffed after our meal that it was the perfect pallet cleanser and didn't push us over the edge. 2 appetizers, 2 entres, and a dessert for 2 costed us around $110 and filled us up. Reason I'm giving this place 4 stars instead of 5: -they were out of like 4 of the food items we asked for/were interested in. -could provide more sauce on the side for their foods. -I would have liked to see a tea with no caffeine on the menu. First of all, this is not a Sushi place. I walked into the place around 3 pm. There was only one table that had people. There was no Sushi Bar. There was a sign that instructed me to wait to be seated. I waited for what seemed like an eternity, and finally, a young white guy came out and told me I could sit wherever I wanted. I didn't see a single Asian anywhere. Then I was given a one-sheet menu. The prices were decent, but the only thing on the menu was Sushi Rolls. The waiter seemed more interested in the blasting country music with his cell phone connected to the restaurant entertainment system than he was in waiting on me. Finally, he came over and took my order. I asked for a beer, and I was told that since they didn't have a beer and wine license, so they could not serve alcohol. Bummer. Then, I asked if they had Yellow Tail Sushi, and I was told that I could order Sashimi, but there was no actual Sushi available. Ok, so I ordered the California Roll and a Roll that had Yellow Tail on it with some sort of sauce I could dip it in. Oh, they had metal chopsticks, and I thought that was a nice touch. Anyway, I tried dipping the yellow tail roll in the sauce, but it didn't taste very good. The California Roll was edible but not very tasty. Since I am a sushi aficionado, I cannot recommend this place for those who want Sushi. If you like Sushi Rolls, then you might give it a shot, but I wouldn't expect much.
