Meh. Stopped in for breakfast and had the midnight rider biscuit. It came out 2 minutes after I ordered so it was definitely not cooked fresh. The chicken was dry dry dry. The bacon jam was flopped on and it's sweet and overpowering. I scraped it off and it took up half the plate! Ick. The pimento cheese was goopy and flavorless. The biscuit was nice and fluffy though. H&H has become my new favorite place to eat in Macon, especially for breakfast. On Wednesday they have the best turkey and dressing. The baked chicken is another favorite of mine. The staff at H&H is great, I feel like Norm from Cheers when I walk through the door at H&H cause everyone knows my name. This place is a Macon staple with a lot of musical history and a coworker of mine brought me here to experience it and have some good food. Now, I'm no southerner, I'm a Yankee from Boston and I LOVED the food. I don't eat fried chicken, but here I was almost eating the bones, it was that good. I had green beans and mac and cheese with my chicken and was very pleased. To top it off, I had sweet potato pie. This was GREAT. I didn't experience what some others have said in the more negative reviews. It's definitely a divey place, but I realized that here in the south, the more divey it looks, the higher the chances are that the food will be very decent. First, the sweet tea and lemonade were fantastic. The old ladies working there were fun to speak with and listen to. Ok, that's all the positive I can say. Before you eat, I recommend that you walk into the bathroom. If the sight of the cockroaches scattering across the floor don't encourage you to immediately leave the place, then take a look into the kitchen area. It is one of the most disgusting kitchen's I've ever seen. It doesn't look like the place has received more than a light whip down since 1959. Other reviewers have noted that you actually walk back into the kitchen to hand your money/credit card to the cook. I don't know if this place just missed the basic food handlers class but this is a major No-No. The food is, at best, bland and mushy. Perhaps it would be fine for babies or sick elderly people (the taste and texture) but the lake of sanitary conditions would likely end up killing the young or old. In summation, STAY AWAY! Come in, take your photos, say you've been to an 'historic' restaurant and leave before you catch something! We will NEVER eat here again. read more

Good lord. This place was a gem. Had fried chicken, mac n cheese, collards, deviled eggs, and caramel cake for dessert. It was decadent and just perfectly greasy and buttery. Great southern food. Tasted the chicken and dumplings and fried pork chops of my compatriots, and those were similarly delish. The caramel cake wasn't too caramel-ey...it had a hint of maple, which I love. The cornbread left me underwhelmed - a little too dry. Service was fantastic, especially considering we were a raucous group of 18 criminal defense lawyers. Simple seating and menu. My chicken was slightly dry as well, but the seasoning was on point. Overall, a great place, will be back. Oh, if you want beer - the serve has to run down the street to a sister location to get it, so...no alcohol here. read more

I've eaten here once with my parents and we all enjoyed ourselves. The atmosphere was relaxed and the food was wonderful. The service was very attentive, but not obtrusive. We ordered and had our food within five or six minutes. I had the country fried steak with gravy, mashed potatoes, and squash casserole. Oh, wow. My mouth is watering just thinking about the food. My parents both had the salmon croquettes with some sides. The salmon croquettes were delicious. The restaurant was clean easily accessible. My parents were a little hesitant to eat here because of the location (both recall this area in Macon being a little rough 30+ years ago). HORRIBLE!! Let me say this first We were on our way to start vacation. We always try something new and never something we can get in Atlanta. So we looked up soul food and H&H came up with very good reviews. I did not look on Yelp only google reviews. The chicken for sure was refried. Meaning it was old and they fried it again. I noticed when we walked in on other customers plate the chicken was dark and I was thinking they serve Nashville hot chicken. Nope ours was just as dark so either they refried it or used old grease. We ordered chicken and fish and the fish was fried so hard when you picked it up it came right out of the crust!!! Collards were from the can and Mac and cheese was just ok! Same for the peach cobbler. Will never ever recommend this place and certainly will never spend my hard earned money. Inez and Louise need to get back in the kitchen. My daughters and I drove from Selma that day on an Allman Bros. pilgrimage that started in our hometown of Vancouver BC. Not factoring in the hour time change, we arrived 10 minutes before they closed. Happily they invited us in and provided one of the better meals we had on the road. My chicken fried steak was crispy and delicious and my daughter's Mac and Cheese was "as good as she had" on our adventure. Our service was fantastic. When the server pulled up a chair to take our order I was won over. She was a great server and the whole group took care of us wonderfully. I told her I wanted a good greasy southern breakfast and she suggested H&H. I am so glad she did. It was a little out of our way but it was 100% worth it. My only complaint was that the service was a little slow but it was a Friday morning and they only had one waitress. Plus I think that's just how they operate in the south. (We're from Chicago where everything is go, go, go.) I had the Butch with the most delicious cheese grits I've ever had. Usually when I order grits I feel like there's not enough cheese. But these were perfect. My husband had the country fried steak biscuit sandwich and said it was amazing. My 4 year old just ate a (enormous) sausage patty which is pretty standard for him. Unfortunately this was a big let down. My family and I travel 2 hrs just to give it a try. The menu online isn't the menu in the restaurant. We were told they have a different menu for the weekend once we sat down.. overall the chicken was overly cooked. It was harder than it should have been. There was no seasoning on any of the food. I ordered the 2 meats with 3sides.. my 2 meats were chicken and fried steak. My sides were Mac and cheese, mashed potatoes with gravy, and fried okra. None.. not one part of this mean had seasoning. I had to use the salt and pepper on the table. I'm giving this 2 because despite the main food. I order the biscuits and those were melt in your mouth good.. they had this homemade jam.. perfect.. I can't say that I'll be back. I do need more seasoning. The overall fee of the restaurant was small, but homey. It had maybe 15-20 tables and felt very welcoming. I can't call this a soul food restaurant. To be called that you need to have some feelings when eating, but without that seasoning.. that's very hard to do. read more

We went for breakfast and were the only people there. When the server handed us the menus she told us the waffle maker is broken. What? Half the menu is waffles. My husband ordered the ham breakfast. Since I was planning on waffles I just ordered two eggs. Now here is when the big insult came. The ham breakfast came with 1/2 a biscuit. It wasn't even fresh, but more like yesterday's left over. Who has a sign outside your restaurant saying "eat a biscuit for peace" then only gives you a 1/2 old biscuit? That in its self should cause riot? We would have been ahead stopping at Cracker Barrel. At least there you would get a whole biscuit or maybe two. The grits were not good. The service was terrible. The server kept messing the paper inventory like she expected a big crowd. Towards the end of our time a table of four came in. She never came by to refill our coffee till she brought the check. We were visiting Mercer for a baseball game and decided to try out H&H Soul Food since it's a GA landmark. Stepping in to the restaurant definitely made you feel you were stepping back in time. I loved seeing the memorabilia and pictures on the wall. Unfortunately that's where my compliments end (really hate to say it). But it's quite apparent that Ma Louise and the H&H Soul Food family sold their soul to the Moonhanger Group because there is no longer any soul cooking in their food. I ordered the H and H Breakfast - sub'd the fried catfish with the scrambled eggs, cheese grits, and biscuits. Apparently the Moonhanger Group banned seasoning from the kitchen because there was NONE. The grits were tasteless - you're supposed to at least put salt in the water when boiling the grits. But no salt was added unfortunately. I tried to help it by adding salt, pepper and a bit of butter but nothing helped and the butter made the grits watery. The catfish was seasonless also and the filet was not fully cooked. Where was the cornmeal, flour, salt and cayenne pepper mix for the catfish? It was hard to eat the catfish (and I LOVE catfish). Adding to the food insult, I was given some watery, blueberry "jam" that ruined 1 half of my biscuit. To end my review on a good note - the service was WONDERFUL! I ordered the Saturday special, which was grits with sliced pork, collard greens all mixed into one dish, and my friend ordered the meatloaf with greens, fried okra, and cornbread. The special was something unique, it sounded good, and it was! The meatloaf was dry, cannot recommended, and the sides were solid. Great food....slooooooow service. I can't say it was worth it. With some customer service training, this could be one of Macon's best breakfast venues. I think our wait for a server was 15 ish minutes (not awful, But not great either considering the restaurant was not full). We waited 50 minutes for our food to arrive. Everyone around us had a long wait too, so the general feeling amongst customers was not very positive. The food did arrive hot, though. And it was delicious. H&H is fairly famous when it comes to breakfast joints in Macon. It's popularity is partly owed to visits paid by the Allman Brothers, and another part due to its ownership by the local Moonhanger group. This place has some of the best chicken biscuits you will find around here and I attribute it to their masterfully crafted bacon jam. I actually ordered the Nashville hot chicken biscuit on my visit and upgraded the biscuit to include some extras like the bacon jam. I believe it only cost a dollar extra, but it made a world of a difference. The service here is solid and on the weekday morning that I visited there was no wait. Many people walk from the nearby neighborhoods or from the hospital across the street. For those who are driving, there is street parking out front and also a parking lot to the right of the building that houses H&H. I will say that this place can easily be missed while driving by because there is not much visibility from the street besides a small black-and-white sign hanging over the entrance. Overall, H&H is a great place to eat breakfast, especially if you are into the Allman Brothers. read more

Woah!! How can this place possibly have less than 5 stars? Was recommended this spot by a local while visiting, and most definitely was not disappointed. We got there at 10:30- for my fellow travelers, they serve breakfast before 11, do a switch over between 11:00-11:30, then lunch. I was bummed initially because I was excited about sampling their lunch menu, but breakfast did not disappoint! Both my colleague and I got the midnight rider. A biscuit, topped with fried chicken and bacon jam, and an egg if you so choose (which I did!) I got an egg cooked medium on the top. I cannot urge you enough to sample this absolutely deliciously scrumptious and delectable option. My colleague also tried the cheesy grits, which he said were spot on. Sweet tea is *sweet*, so if you're not from the south or used to it, go half and half like I did. Service was amazing, prices were SO reasonable. This place cannot get enough kudos from me. My daughter and I stopped in here last Saturday (9/15) for breakfast around 10:30. We were seated immediately and our order was taken in a timely manner. The food was delicious which was not unexpected. However our server never came to check on us and never refilled our water (and my coffee). She passed by our table a number of times and did not even look in our direction. We had to stop a different server in order to get our check and pay. The restaurant was not crowded nor were we seated in an out-of-the-way location. I expected more in the way of service from a restaurant with such a good reputation.
