Can't believe I've never reviewed H&K before. This is a solid, decently clean, decently affordable nail salon option in this area. I haven't made it down here in a while since Bry's Nails opened and is much closer to me, but they were closed and I needed a pedicure, so I made the trek down to H&K recently. I got there around two hours before closing time and the wait on a weekday was around a half hour. I had no other options at this point, so I decided to wait it out. It was super busy, they actually ended up turning a few people away who came in after me. Once I was in the chair all went well. My nail tech was super professional and did an excellent job. The nail color selection here is okay but not as robust as other nearby spots. But all in all, a good, centrally located nail salon. read more

There's potential here if the tech (head woman, far left station near sink) I had wasn't so chatty, gossiping in a Mandarin dialect (guessing my age, something about my face, etc.), gossiped more to Fenny next to her (when I gave a 20% + tip - probably surprised about that) & laughed/tsk to staff as she picked up my old coat & bags & carried it over to the drying station for me. I went to the salon on a Thursday, 11:30am for a regular manicure ($13). Had called the day before to make an appointment, got there a bit late (that's why the bigger tip) but the ladies seemed very relaxed about it. The salon was empty & they were very casual & chatty. Fenny greeted me first & I could tell she's probably very good at nail design & detail. However, the head tech on the far left station, next to the sinks did my manicure. It's a dry (used electric filing tool to do my cuticles), no lotion, no massage experience. And the tech used a dirty (had a smear of purple polish in the middle) warm washcloth as the "hot treatment/cleaning" part. I meditated & lowered my expectations & went with the flow. Let her finish up, things look average & it wasn't until my nails were dry and I got outside that I noticed the poor quality. Application: right hand looked okay but polish got on a few of the cuticles & had to carefully remove it at home. Left hand nail polish layers were bumpy & uneven. I noticed the tech painting strokes at an angle, and then at the end, felt her dab my index finger weirdly. It's easy to mess up enamel application & with a nude color like that - of course it'll show when dry! The salon is a lot bigger on the inside than it looks. The pedicure furniture and manicure stations are clean and well kept. Decor is actually cute & having the sinks in the middle of the room seems so convenient. There's an AMAZING amount of gel & regular color options! But the whole experience just involved a lot of chatter & minimal attention to detail. Not sure if I'll be back, maybe I'll request Fenny (a client came in with long red gels for her). Or maybe the staff doesn't like doing regular mani's anymore? read more

I am new to the area and decided to try this place since it was walking distance. I went in for sns dip powder tips and walked out so disappointed and upset. I chose a light green color and this looks like they applied no color! I told the lady that this did not look like the color I chose and she insisted that it was the correct color and said it was light green. The application is also a mess. Was not worth $70 when there are other nail salons in Astoria that will do the exact thing (and better) for $55. For reference below I put the nail color I chose vs what I got. My pinky was painful from filing by the machine. I told her my pinky is pain, but she kept saying me back i have to get this done. Why? I said PAIN! It's dangerous to keep using the filing machine on my painful area. She should take care about customers who said pain. I was really pissed off and left the salon on the way. She could use a regular file (not machine) only for my painful pinky or little use brain to consider some other ways for the pain area. Because I said painful! I thought my pinky was just sensitive today somehow. But look at the side of my pinky! It was just over filed by machine!!!! I got red spot on my pinky. I have mixed opinions on this salon. For the price, they do a great job with design and cleaning. However, they cannot properly remove a gel manicure. The first time I went was July 2022 and I had a great experience. My nails were cleaned well and the nail tech did an amazing job with the design (I had my natural nails at the time so there was no need for gel removal). The next time I stopped by was September 2022 and a different nail tech took care of my nails. She used a drill to remove my gel manicure, but pressed way too hard. She actually ended up breaking one of my nails and looked at me as if it was my fault. I stopped going to this salon because of this, but my mom wanted to go back this year because it is cheaper than where we usually go. This time the nail tech soaked my nails and also used the drill. She pressed down too hard and really thinned out my nail. The next day, my thumb nail under the gel broke off. I'm really not looking forward to finding a place to take off this gel manicure because I know that I will have to cut my nails short and let them recover. Overall, the design turned out exactly the way I wanted but they're too rough when taking off gel manicures. read more

After my first bad experience the owner invited me back for a free pedicure to make up for it. The Nail Technician was YoYo (pronounced "You You"). She was phenomenal. YoYo took her time working on each of my nails and made sure everything was manicured to perfection. The foot scrub and massage was gentle, but soothing. I brought my own nail polish again this time and she applied it perfectly. I was not uncomfortable or in pain at any point during the service. She finished off with a light neck & shoulder massage while my toes were drying. A++ service! I would ABSOLUTELY recommend YoYo and will definitely be coming back to her for pedicures in the future. I had a pretty good experience here. A couple of my nails broke really low in the same day and I needed to get some extensions to avoid having to cut all of my nails super short to match. I also got a dip powder mani. The whole process didn't feel rushed, and I definitely saw that everyone (not just my nail tech) was taking their time to do things well. I actually can't tell the difference between the nails that got extensions and the ones that are natural unless I look under the nail, so overall I'd definitely say this is a great place to go if you have a nail emergency. Why else would it be peeling off not even 48 hours later? My nails now look super thin & the gel layer is also super thin. I paid $40 for this. I won't be back. I had a lovely experience at this beautifully designed nail salon. The owner Qian was kind enough to take me in at 8:00 on a thursday night with an appointment. I had Eva do my nails, even at this late hour she was a perfectionist and took her sweet time to make sure i got the french SNS i wanted. Eva was amazing. She read my mind and already knew the french i wanted, perfectly square, length was just right, and the sns was nice and thin. She shaped them really nice. I applaud her, thank you Eva. i knew she was so tired at this hour. The actual salon is SO CLEAN! This is a big deal for me, the tables were clean especially. I'm impressed that the tables have a vacuum vent in them, so cool and modern. all the tools were in those blue packets and the table were constantly brushed down throughout my manicure. I got a powder gel manicure and a regular pedicure here. The work they did was very good, so this isn't about their workmanship. I did find the salon to be a little overcrowded, especially where the pedicure chairs are located. Also, I had made an appointment for a spa pedicure but they seemed to be in such a rush to get people in chairs that I opted for a regular pedicure, which was lackluster. The prices here are much higher than the surrounding salons I have been to. The powder gel was $38 and the pedicure was $23. If you use a card, they add tax as well, so now your total increases even more! In my opinion, $23 for a basic pedicure is far too expensive. Online appointments are definitely convenient, but I will likely continue to explore other salons in the area. read more

The nails were decent , however I cannot justify a sns tip mani and regular pedi taking 4 HOURS!!! My appointment was at 3:30pm and I did not finish until 7:30pm. Not only that but they waited until they were almost done to tell me about the up-charges that aren't on their pricing board. $10 to get different colored nails , and another $10 for doing the same to my toes, $20. They also charge $5 to shape the nail, something they already are supposed to do. They up-charge customers for services they are already providing. Coloring the nail is the same even if it's a different color. They are already shaping the nail while they are filing it, which makes no sense to charge for. Save your money and go somewhere else that won't up-charge you for the smallest detail. read more

A one star Because I was told to wait 10 minutes and I waited 30. Because the girl Lisa, burned my skin not once, twice but over three times while doing my toes, removing the gel. Because i told them upon entering I wanted pedi and gel mani and after she finished with my Pedi (which took forever, over an hour and not bc she did a good job) she brought me over to the drying machine and im like uhm i asked for gel mani. She "had to go" so she brought me over to another lady May, who was removing my gel and broke one of my nails while rushing to remove everything. Then she asked me what color I wanted, and i showed her a picture and then she brought me over to another girl bc I guess she could not do a gel mani with chrome? Let me rewind, a gel mani is $35 in this salon, THEY CHARGE $55 , for putting fairy dust on top of your nail after doing the gel. Yup $20 dollars more. It was my birthday so I was like ok. I thought it would be 5-10 dollars more. Then, it gets better, she put glue on the nail that broke to stick it together, did the gel procedure we all know and placed the chrome on top. I just wanted to leave. I entered at 5:15 and left at 8. Then it was time to pay and she kept asking cash or card. I was holding my phone in my hand and said card and she said oh apple pay. And she said "no good" after scanning it, embarrassing me. I know my card worked. It was their machine that didn't work. She asked me if I had a card and luckily i had it on me. And my card was FINE. One the receipt tip was about 18 and + and honestly I wish I didnt leave any. It was the worst experience ever. The vibe was off. From person to person to person talking amongst each other bc one needs to leave for the day, idk i was so uncomfortable. Im not the one to make a show at a place but i will post. read more

I am an avid pedicure fan of 20+ years and this was the roughest pedicure I have ever received :( This is NOT however what drove me to write a review though. The woman doing my pedicure cut me during the process and then preceded to rinse her pedicure equipment in my foot bath while my feet (including bloodied toe) were IN it. Eeeeeewwwwwww I then watched her walk over and put that equipment in the 'sanitizer'. Sanitizers DO NOT kill bacteria - they are designed to keep PROPERLY SANITIZED equipment clean. Hence the 2 stars I paid $71 (nails only) plus gave a $10 tip only to Lose 8 nails in less than 2 weeks I lost my 1st nail after day 6 when I put my hat on Everyday following I would lose a nail. I went to sleep woke up and another nail, GONE I used the bathroom, pulled up my pants, another nail GONE! I have been getting my nails done for over 15 years and I've dealt with my share of bad work but I have never experienced anything like this! I wasn't going to post this review but I hung out with some friends last night and they commented on my nails the entire night, apparently they have never experienced it either. Really disappointed about the price of my nails. Came in for an SNS polish change and paid $87 pre-tip. They did have to soak off my acrylic nails which was $10 After soaking off my acrylic nails for over 30 mins in a bowl (I would rather have foil) I did a polish change on my natural nails and requested chrome ombré. I believe the chrome sns is $70. I was also charged a $7 fee because I did not pay with cash I also did not receive the design I requested (shown in photos below). Salon also posted photo of design I wanted done previously that they could not execute. Also, prices Are NOT transparent. I asked to see price menu and they gave me prices verbally and didn't have prices written down. So I decided to give this place another try. The sns powder nail done by Yuki on my last visit lasted so long. The polish for my pedi lasted a long time. Even though my pedicure last time (w Judy) was less than mediocre. Today I had sns w Yuki again. I asked for a design. She worked so hard to get it just right. See pics. And she's super sweet. I asked for her to do my pedi and it was much better this time. It's still a basic pedi. No jelly in the water or paraffin on your heels but it's also $20. They do use plastic liner for tub. I think what you have to do here is fine a good person and stick w her. I love Yuki and I'd come back to her again. I told her last time the sanding tool got close to my cuticles and hurt me and this time she was very careful. She works really really hard. Clean bathroom. I've been traveling outside of the city to get my nails done by the ladies at H&K Nail Salon for almost an entire year. These talented nail techs are quick learners and extremely detail-oriented! I'd traveled and gone as long as 5 weeks until another appointment and my polish still looked great. I'm really into ombré powder nails and I've had my nails done by 4 different nail techs at the salon. When the salon was busy, a tech I wasn't familiar with would do my nails but as soon as Qian shared her techniques, the tech picked them up immediately. I've heard other customers sharing that they drove from the Bronx and Brooklyn to get their nails done here so I highly recommend making an appointment in advance to secure tou. I got a SNS mani and ocean blue spa pedicure, I requested Cici as she does the best SnS powder manicure, My pedicure included different types of scrubs, wrapping of my legs and a callus treatment, this treatment reduces any swallowing, very relaxing and great job. I went inside thinking I could get something simple and cute, this lady is going to tell me that my nails will be $140... They over charge you like you stupid, this lady was very rude with how she handled me like I'm kid. As if I never got my nails done before, & never been to a nail salon. Charging $30 for my nail length, charge for color, charge for design, charge for shape, it is ridiculous. They just make up numbers in their heads and the price list say 45 for acrylic nails but yet my nails came out to $60 just for plain nails. No nail polish, no nothing.
