I shop at this location because it is convenient after I leave work in the afternoon. However, the employees that are in the self checkout, need some more training on interaction with customers. Some of them have been rude to me, they don't greet anyone, just silent, and not friendly. I asked one young lady a question, and she leaned back like I would infect her, and I had a mask on, she didn't. I have discovered that the employees at the N. This is my new favorite grocery store! I love that this is a short drive from Midtown and has a safe neighborhood that surrounds it. The staff is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I really enjoy grocery shopping here because I don't have to drive to Whole Foods for specific dietary ingredients for vegan cooking. They are very diet friendly no matter what one's specifications may be. Perhaps it's how brightly lit up the store is, but I always feel so welcomed when I go there. I especially like this HEB because of food truck Fridays. Every first and third Friday there's at least 10 food trucks there, ready to serve with music on the deck and sometimes additional food is being offered by HEB. The service is also great, but what I find most interesting is the approach to the front door. The design and decor of the entrance is quite interesting. Quick Tips: I loveeee samples at HEB! Last time I went I actually felt like I had enough for a mini meal: This was my dinner of samples on my last visit. Appetizer: Hummus an a Pita chip, a slice of apple, and guacamole and a chip Main course: Avocado sushi roll and 1/2 a pork dumpling. Dessert: 1/4 Chocolate chip cookie UM AWESOME. Service is okay, one time it took me a good ten minutes to find someone to help me find something. I also had to wait a while to get service at the deli. I buy all my groceries at either HEB or kroger, with the occasional luxury (not necessity) trip to Whole Foods. I found out this HEB is 10 minutes from my job. This is probably my favorite one of all, it has the feel of a tiny market. I also learned that this building is one of the greenest HEB's around. I believe the trees removed to make way for the parking lot were repurposed around the property. And they have weekly yoga sessions outside. Two great things I've experienced at Thai location: Massive food truck gatherings during the summertime. You can even go inside, purchase your favorite six pack, and enjoy it with some food truck bites out on the patio. $6 lunch plate special. They always have a good variety of entrees and sides. And try the fresh strawberry lemonade. I'm drooling just thinking about it. read more

Normally I love coming to this store, I've been frequenting this location for the past 4 years I've lived in the area, but tonight really pissed me off. I entered HEB at 11.39, I would know because I checked the time after some guy at the door said "YOU HAVE 15 MINS". I went in to grab some laundry detergent and a few candles so I didn't think it would be such a big deal but apparently it was. After grabbing said items I decided to ask the cashier who the manager was after realising how rude the greeter was. It turns out the "greeter" was the manager (Kevin). This HEB has a great selection, but god can it be a PAIN in the ass. I only come here late at night (after 8pm) or early in the morning (before 10 AM), and avoid coming on the weekend or Mondays. During the day (even at 2 pm on a weekday!) It's just too packed, and I always have difficulty finding parking. If you come at peak hours (evenings), you will be driving around in circles for at least 10 minutes to find a space, and most likely it will be alllllll the way in the back. And when you finally get inside, the checkout lines are sprawling everywhere, and its annoying to navigate around the tons of people filling the aisles. I also echo the sentiment of one reviewer regarding the carts - they always seem to run out at peak times and I have to look for one in the parking lot somewhere. Also, avoid coming Sunday nights - they often run out of a LOT of produce (once I couldn't find celery, broccoli, and kale). Coming at off hours, it's a fine experience. It's also a clean and convenient location, and I prefer it to the Kroger on Montrose. But beware of what time you come at or you will be ripping your hair out. read more

I am generally picky about my produce, and they have hands-down, fresh produce. They also have a generous selection of meats, seafood, with a pre-made sushi/deli section if you need a quick bite to go. - Atmosphere is clean, organized - Bakery: love their selection of fresh breads, desserts, cookies! Needs work: - Service can be abysmal, especially check out. There have been multiple times where I have been faced with negative-attitude laden cashiers who just seem like they hate their lives. As a result, my groceries get hastily bagged, and my meticulously picked out produce gets crushed. - Parking is an absolute DISASTER, especially on weekends. My advice: avoid the weekend afternoon rush. - The cart/cart return deficit: it has become a regular issue, where there are zero carts at the entrance upon arrival, where I have spent half an hour hunting down a cart. Additionally, carts are scattered EVERYWHERE in the lot, as there is a dearth of cart return stations. What a mess. I have my favorite HEB in Austin but, this location topped that one. We were picking up some snacks for a daytime beach trip and I was impressed by how clean and organized this location was. The pre-made ready to go meal and snack selection was much larger than the one in my HEB and had more 5 star gourmet selections. The pricing was a little higher than my HEB but, everything we purchased was fresh and the check out line moved quickly. The only draw back is it is a little difficult to get back out of this location with all the traffic. read more

At the insistence of Cee B. that this was unlike the rest of the wolfpack of marginal supermarket shopping experiences in the neighborhood: I finally had to check it out since I was nearby anyway stocking up on tacos (Torchy's) and bagels (Hot Bagel Shop.) The place is impressive to drive by. Back when I lived down the street this used to be a crumbling apartment complex that was an urban blight on the neighborhood and home to the crazies, homeless, and other things - being the primary reason most people carried a rape whistle if we were going to walk our dog at any point in the day, regardless of daylight or night. So that got knocked down. Instead of an open space park, like many graffiti artists suggested on the various signs adorning the empty space before construction got underway, megacorp HEB decided that they needed another store since that one on Buffalo Speedway is sooo far away (I hate that one b-t-dubs) and the good one in Bunker Hill is just soooo much even further (I like that one and always think it is worth the drive.) So the final scorecard for Montrose is: Disco Kroger, West Gray Kroger, Randalls Midtown, Randalls on Shepherd, HEB on Buffalo Speedway, Whole Foods on Kirby, Whole Foods on Waugh, and now this new HEB. If I am overly negative on taking away two stars from this location it is just for corporate excess and that this would have made a great public park and open space instead of another shop - but this is still the best supermarket shopping experience in the 'hood. But at least the parking lot is a bit more scenic than Fiesta's across the street. And the storefront is pretty impressive for just a supermarket. The workers do not get up in your grill. That is good. The ones at the HEB on Buffalo Speedway are obnoxious and ask you ridiculous questions as if you are a lost child that is high and looking overly confused, all the while as they spray their Funyuns breath on you making sure you know where the cereal aisle is. Because you know - most people need the invisibility cloak to sneak past the Lucky Charms mercenary death squad who is instructed to kill on sight anyone who just wanders into the aisle without a shopping list that has been witnessed and notarized by two HEB employees. And even worse, like in the Restricted Section, some cereal boxes are chained to the walls. My biggest complaint with this HEB is that they have the tiniest Chef Boyardee section I have ever seen. They had like four options. Really? Really. I began to feel particularly discriminated against when I continued on to the mac and cheese section and it was again the smallest selection I have ever seen. Limited options. And it was just as bad in the frozen pizza section. The selection was half of what you find at the West Gray Krogers, one-fourth of the Bunker Hill HEB. And one of the worst experiences in my life: after getting repeated Anakin Skywalker Star Wars pens in my Cookie Crisp boxes purchased at Randalls Midtown I finally had enough and had to try somewhere else, in an attempt to get the Darth Maul pen I have been lusting after. So I check out the cereal aisle here ... they have Cookie Crisp. But not the Star Wars Episode 1 pen edition. RAGE QUIT. I was about to have a BF (see: the movie White Girls.) It is quite clear that this location does not cater to man-children such as myself. If I was only buying junk food on a shopping expedition (like I was today) I would only come here if I was trying to punish myself in a Penitente way. So if your kids are behaving really badly and you want to punish them too: tell them they can pick anything from the junk food aisles, then have a good evil guffaw as they scurry off and come back crestfallen having had to settle for something they didn't really want, but it is still junk food so it is not thaaaat bad. The beer aisle is actually less impressive than Buffalo Speedway so I can't believe I need to say one nice thing about that store. Many things were out of stock and many shelves were just entirely empty. Clearly a churchlady chose the ordering and grouping since it was incoherent and illogical, I had to walk up and down the aisle twice to find Hoegaarden which was sandwiched among things that were not like itself. I feel like Loki (or Pelagius III) was responsible for this mayhem. If you are looking for something: just walk up and down the aisle until you find it, it is there, you just have to look for it instead of intuitively going straight at it like you do at the West Gray Krogers. Oh. Eye candy? It is here. Apparently someone forgot to append the new cover page to the TPS report and that is why I just got the late notice today, finally. But attractive people shop here. I LOVE HEB! If I were ever to move to another state or country that doesn't have HEB, I would be genuinely sad. I've spent many Sunday mornings getting weekly groceries here with my boyfriend. It has a variety of fresh produce and a respectable organic section, if you're into that. I've also purchased fish and steak fillets here, and they were always fresh. Their premade hot food by weight is decent too. For a while, they were running a special of $3 off any prepackaged meals (selection of kale salad, mac n cheese, roasted potatoes, and etc.) over $3. There would be containers that were only $3.05. THIS IS MADNESS. How were they not losing money? This particular location is also the only one I've been able to get individual cups of Chobani greek yogurt for just $1, vs. $1.25 at other locations. I eat at least one of these every day, so a little bit of savings is appreciated. It's also very clean, and I've noticed that the general clientele is rather young. Shoppers are usually polite, and make room in the aisles for other carts, which makes my shopping experience that much more enjoyable. Perhaps the best part of shopping here is the abundance of samples, from chips/guac and freshly squeezed orange juice, to whatever delicious concoction the chef at the Cooking Connection station is whipping up. Usually, the most daunting part of grocery shopping is waiting in long check-out lines (I'm lookin at you, Wal-Mart). Here, almost every lane is open, and even when the lines appear long, you get to the front pretty quickly. I've always left here a happier person. P.S. Well, I was telling my BF the gloriousness of HEB & pronounced it, unbeknownst to me, as a Jewish racial slur. My BF is Jewish. ::sigh:: I have since discovered it IS an abbreviation, via commercial. I still have no idea what it stands for. Doesn't matter. What does matter is that HEB rivals Whole Foods with slightly cheaper prices and more selections. They have an extensive and amazing wine section. They have scrumptious deserts. My favorite has to be that they have a good selection of cheese. I love cheese. AND they give out free samples of food! Disclaimer: This review is about their Blooms Floral section. So let me tell you guys about this experience that we had while looking for a florist for our wedding. Jeffrey, at this particular location of H-E-B Blooms, was one of the few florists recommended to us by our wedding planner. Setting up an appointment was easy, so we showed up on time, spent an hour "consulting" with this guy, filled out paperwork and gave him a shit-ton of information about our wedding, he said he'd contact us after his 2-week vacation... ....and I guess he decided he wasn't ever coming back. Ok. Too dramatic. But we never heard from him again. Oh well, it was an awkward meeting and he didn't seem too helpful - especially for two people who knew absolutely NOTHING about flowers. I feel ashamed when I have to step into a Randall's or Kroger. HEB is amazing in every comparable aspect. From the food they make in store to prices. Key things that are best in Houston(including from restaurants.) 1. Guacamole - they now make habanero guacamole fresh daily 2. Tres Leches Cakes 3. Butcher made burgers - pre mixed with bacon/cheese, or mushrooms/blue cheese etc 4. Produce - exotics like fresh ghost peppers or Red Scorpion peppers from Holland. (Google it, it will put hair on your chest) 5. Sparking mineral water (Central market brand) - comparable to San Pellegrino with flavor options like lime, citrus, or berry(like is best). Makes a helluva lemonade or a low cal base for a drink. 6. The Deli - a meat & 2 sides = $5.99. Called the orange plate. They have flank steak, salmon, herb shrimp, chicken galore, green chile macaroni(dangerous to keep in fridge after a late night). Enough sides to give you options. Gonna end review. I love HEB dont get me wrong. I shop here every week but my huge issue here is the bagging. I actually make it easy for them I separate dry goods, vegs, frozen, meat and cleaning products etc..but this doesn't matter they literally pay no attention to what they put together in a bag. I always get paper and everytime I leave I notice it all looks like it was tossed in the bag from across the room. Chemicals in with fresh food and meats etc.. jumbled up a huge mess. it makes me not want to go back. Bagging groceries correctly isn't rocket science but no one cares enough to do it right. I'd rather bag myself. I would think with how great the store is run they would make sure the same effort and care would be put into bagging the stuff we use our hard earned money to buy. Great produce, meat department, and beer selection, while not as complete as the bunker hill store this store still trumps any area Kroger by a mile, and whole paycheck foods. Shame it's on the other side of the 'trose but otherwise it's a splendid store. And the best part of shopping is here are the people who work there, friendly, smiling, attentive, and quick -- I could tip every Krogers employee and still not get this level of customer service. Good selection and good price, but a couple of glaring flaws make it "meh". Don't get me wrong, I'd rather shop here than at Kroger or Randall's. First off, the service is less than inspiring. The people who work in the deli often close early, and on more than one occasion I've received glares from them when I come there close to 9pm. Another thing that irks me is that the baggers can't bag to save their lives. Even though I make an effort to send things down the belt in groups, and heavy things first, they still end up putting tomatoes in with cans. One last thing is the food truck thing they do once a month. I just want to stop into my neighborhood grocery store to pick up some last minute things for dinner, but half the parking lot is taken up by food trucks. How does that even benefit them? I absolutely adore HEB and think that they hit the sweet spot between value and fancy. The first time I came here, I asked about getting a rewards card, and was chided for asking because "we aren't an expensive store where you feel like you need those 'discounts'". I agree. After having lived near the Kroger Signature on W Gray, I got sick of their preservative-laden sushi and lackluster service. The HEB in Montrose attracts hipsters, yuppies, and professionals, which is why I initially got the impression that they were closer to Whole Foods than Fiesta. However, prices are really reasonable here and they have a nice board with store coupons in one place located in the back near the dairy. I've never been served by someone rude before, and the store is consistently clean and well-lit. My favorite section is their drugstore area, as you can find some nicer items here that you might normally have to go to a WF for. Produce is always fresh, and they don't have a pitifully small 'ethnic' section, as some other stores call it. It's easy to grab a quick lunch or breakfast here as well. Though not as good as Laredo Taqueria's, their breakfast tacos are appreciably solid. read more

I've been to this H-E-B multiple times for their CURBSIDE DELIVERY SERVICE. Every interaction with an employee here has been PHENOMENAL. I hate hate hate grocery shopping and this service has been such a blessing to me! I will continue to use this service and come back to this location. TIP: Never try to access this H-E-B from W. Alabama if you are using this service. We learned this the hard way on an extremely busy Sunday. I'm surprised I haven't already reviewed this HEB. Like most good (former) Montrosians, I love this HEB! I spent 2 glorious years living within walking distance and shopped here at least once a week, usually more. Everything about this place is great: the prices, the architecture, the selection, the trees in the parking lot, the location, the Texas pride, JJ Watt's endorsement. Ahhhh. The only little drawbacks are that it can be difficult to find a parking spot during peak hours and sometimes their produce didn't seem as nice as Kroger's. But, small prices to pay. I like that this store intermingles their regular products with the organic or "special" products. Yes, I know they have a special, healthy aisle, but for the most part their organic, gluten free, etc. stuff is with the regular stuff. I appreciate that because I like to see all my options at once. I also really like that they carry some Central Market stuff and that the HEB brand itself is so high quality. HEBuddy is adorable! I love their Cul de Sac wine and baked goods. This was my go to grocery store since it opened, and for years I was pretty content. The produce and meat selection was always better than their competitors, and the prices on pantry staples were almost always cheaper than anywhere else. But over the past 6 months, I've notice a drop in the quality of their produce. I'm a perimeter shopper and rarely venture into the aisle unless I need something. I also try to avoid crowds, since people are the most obnoxious when grocery shopping, ie children running amok, people's carts lingering in the middle of the aisle so you can't get by, people standing in front of the thing that you need to get to because they can't figure out what kind of salad dressing they want. It's like people are shopping stoned out if their minds, which I feel I need to be to shop at peek hours. (Thanks for reading that rant) That's why I like to do my shopping early on a Sunday morning. But with the exception of the Sunday before Thanksgiving and Christmas, half the produce is not even stocked when I get there in the morning, and if it is, it's the leftovers that people already picked through from the day before. It's been the most depressing chore to wake up early on a Sunday to see the most pathetic produce selection available. Their bakery is pretty whatever too, and I prefer Fresh Market and Whole Foods baked goods to theirs. Because it's a small store, they also have limited selection in general. And their baggers do not know how to properly bag groceries. Sorry, but you don't. On a positive note, the Sunday morning cashiers are always super nice, it has the nicest looking parking lot in town, and the Crepe guy is there now, but those things alone don't make it a good store. Now I've got Farmhouse Delivery, I don't need them for the produce, meat, eggs, bread, and dairy (not to mention Bola pizza, which HEB is the only brick and mortar grocer that carries this). All the other pantry staples I can get somewheres else including other HEB locations. Goodbye HEB Montrose; it was convenient when it was good, but it sucked balls when it was bad. I am writing this review with hopes that eventually I will be updating it...with five stars. Obviously, the new Montrose HEB is shiny and new and popular, but I think the luster is starting to fade. While I am a faithful person, I decided to stray a bit from my much-loved Montrose Kroger (aka Disco Kroger). I was enticed by the gleaming newness and glowing lights! But I was wrong to wonder, like most cases, and will be coming back to Disco Kroger and asking for a second chance. I had a short and not bizarre grocery list (i.e. turkey burgers, cuties oranges, turkey breakfast sausage, washed and "prepared" grapes, low carb slim fast, blah blah blah). HEB didn't have ONE of the items listed above! Not one! No prepared turkey burger patties???? WHAT? It wasn't like I was requesting Kobe beef or lamb (they probably had that). So there is nothing like making your list and not being able to check everything off of it! Not only did they not have my full list (at all), the shelves looked like Houston had been preparing for the zombie apocalypse or an over hyped hurricane! In some places, shelves were just empty... As I was checking out, the cashier half-assed asked me if I found everything. "Not really" I said. Well, this was obviously a shock and a surprise to him that someone actually answered his question. But no offer of help, a manager, not even a comment card. After my reusable bag was stuffed so heavy I could barely carry it out to my car...I bee lined it to my beloved and completed my list without any problem. I am sorry Disco Kroger...I will not betray you again. Unless maybe curiosity becomes me and I have to prove all of the good reviews for HEB Montrose to myself. read more

This store is great, but it's not easy to get in and out. The cashiers are slow and have attitude, such that they are in no hurry to get customers through the checkout line. If you're expecting this HEB to be more like Central Market, you're going to be disappointed. But if you compare it to Disco Kroger, Fiesta, and other local options, it's pretty great. Good points: * Sufficient parking in pleasant, tree-filled parking lot * Very pleasant architecture, open feeling, and wide aisles * Good organic produce section and bulk spices * Decent selection of frozen/pantry items * HEB store-brand products tend to be better than Kroger Not-so-good points: * Seafood section seems on par with your average grocery store. (I will still need to hit up Whole Foods for seafood.) * Fresh bread section seems pretty limited. * Cheese section is OK, but cannot hold a candle to Murray's Cheese Shop inside the West Gray and West U. Krogers. * Fresh herbs are CRAZY expensive and not that nice-looking. $2.29 for six wilted leaves of mint, WTF? * Staff seems pretty clueless. I could not find barley, and everyone I asked gave me a vague answer ("maybe with the pasta?") and then walked away. I will give them the benefit of the doubt given that the store just opened, but it would help if the staff knew more and cared more. * Not sure whether W. Alabama and Dunlavy can handle the increased traffic. In short, this is a very nice "normal" grocery store and currently my first choice for local groceries. Hopefully they'll keep it up and make sure food stays fresh and things are removed from the shelves before they expire--because that's a big problem with the local Fiesta and Kroger. But it's not Central Market or Whole Foods, and I will continue to patronize those stores for certain fresh and specialty items. And I may still make the trek to the West U. Kroger (way out of my way, but an awesome store) for big shops. read more
