I was so excited to know that there was now a closer Asian grocery market to where I live. I came here and got to pick up more fresh bean sprouts, Chinese broccoli, and frozen dumplings. I have also been back to eat inside and it's pretty tasty. The prices are bit higher than in Chinatown and Argyle but also the vegetables look more fresher in addition to the seafood too. I like that there's also a parking lot that's free which is makes it more convenient - be careful not to drive past it. read more

This H mart had a lot of options to choose from especially considering its location in the heart of Chicago, and limited square footage. Some of the items were a little pricey, but there were definitely a lot of reasonably priced options to choose from. The produce, meat, and seafood all looked pretty fresh. We ended up getting some delicious strawberry wafer cookies, some (ok) matcha tea, delicious bibimbap vegetables and ribeye steak, and eggs. They had a wide variety of ramen, and seaweed, dumplings, and other asian quintessentials. Great store to check out if you are in need of some asian ingredients. read more

Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be writing a 1 star review for H Mart. I have come to love the store. We have regularly visited the Niles location for the last several years. I am writing a 1 star review for the following reasons: 1) the parking lot is an absolute nightmare. This is not to say that it is filled with bad drivers but of exceptionally poor design. I am a pretty good driver and just to get out of the spot required a five point turn to avoid hitting the cars parked behind me. 2) one of the things, I have come to love about h mart is their selection of fresh seafood. I picked up assorted sashimi and sashimi grade shrimp and squid. I had to throw out the squid and the sashimi I did not finish. This is because it had the smell of having gone bad. This food was eaten within an hour of getting home. This was extremely disappointing. I cannot go back here for that reason alone. Very sad! I have been on the toilet quite a bit since I ate the sashimi. The worst thing is sashimi is not cheap, so I paid a lot to not feel good. 3) the prices are generally 30% more than the Niles location. I can understand the prices being inflated modestly to offset the West Loop location but 30% higher is extortionate. Save yourself by just driving to Niles or closer by is seafood city. read more

Finally!!!! An Asian grocery store in West Loop so I don't have to trek all the way to Argyle or Chinatown to get my Asian veggies and groceries. They have WAY more than the traditional Asian market as well--- honestly, I don't trust the meat selection at most Asian grocery stores (my mom has told me all the horror stories and so it makes me weary) but I would consider buying the meat and fish here. They had a HUGE tuna on their opening day. Also, their lamb is much cheaper than what you can find at Mariano's! ALSO LIVE LOBSTER! Need I say more?! How about live Louisiana white shrimp?! (Whatever that is) And that selection of kimchee! LOVE! I was getting stuck in grocery cart traffic jams with all the ahjumas and college kids looking for Korean deals on opening day, so I didn't have a chance to browse all their offerings, but you betcha I'm going back there this weekend to try out their restaurants and stock up on more green tea ice cream. read more

I mean it's convenient if you need to get some Korean or Japanese products in a pinch. However, they carry a different brand of kimchee than what I am used to at Joong Boo and at the Hmart in Niles and Naperville locations. They have a couple of food stations, and a bakery. It's a small store that is narrow isles. On top of it the prices are higher than normal, probably because the lease for this place is expensive. They do have pretty everything you're looking for when it comes to Asian products. However, I'm going back to Joong Boo on a regulars shopping trip. read more

I met some friends here for dinner and was initially confused why they would want to eat at a grocery store? I honestly wasn't blown away by the food and have had better Korean food but there is definitely novelty in a small food court being connected to a grocery store. I really enjoy drinking my bubble tea as I peruse the aisles. This grocery store has everything you could need! The produce, meats and seafood are all very fresh, high quality and surprisingly cheap! This place also has pre-seasoned meats for all your Korean BBQ needs. I've returned many times for their extensive frozen foods (Dumplings, kimchi pancakes, desserts including red bean popsicles.) This is also the place I come to fill my Milkis melon soda cravings (Definitely always have this stocked in the fridge now.) Lastly, there's always open parking spots in the lot when I come! This is a review of the supermarket. I am very, very grateful that an H mart has opened up in our neighborhood! This H mart is small but they make very good use of the limited space they have. It is very well organized and it has the majority of materials that one would need to cook basic Asian cuisine. I am particularly happy with the seafood section, which has more live fish in tanks and different varieties of fish than any US grocery chain as well as any Chinatown supermarket in Chicago. They have basic things like large shrimp, clams and squid that US supermarkets (surprisingly) leave out of their selections. I found the seafood that I needed to make a seafood paella here - and that isn't even an Asian dish. They also have a large enough produce section with things like bean sprout tips and Asian pears that I cannot find in US supermarkets. They have the biggest selection of tofu that I have seen in Chicago proper. They also have prepared Korean foods like premarinated Korean BBQ meat and pancakes. My biggest qualm is that the prices are high because they know they have the most complete ethnic food selection of any supermarket in Chicago proper. They have some sort of rewards program that does not really do anything. They also have a small Korean food court. Personally, I think it is definitely worth checking this place out. read more

Small but mighty, this Hmart is what downtown Chicagoans have long deserved. Compared to the mega store in Niles, obvi this location has fewer SKUs, but I feel the selections are adequate for everyday cooking and snacking. Based on my two trips there, here are some tips/observations: - Sweeet discounts on meats on some days. Look for the Weekly Sales & Events on their website for this store. $4.98/lb for marinated ribeye steak, that's cheaper than organic red peppers. They will also scoop you extra sauce after weighing the meat so you are not paying for liquids. Blessed. - Awesome banchan selections but pretty darn pricey. - Super friendly staff. Samples galore during the weekend. - Maybe they are still working out some kinks, but it seems like they are *always* stocking the shelves. The isles are narrow so it's a bit inconvenient at times. - Ample seating for the three "restaurants" by the entrance. If you order soondubu jigae (soft tofu stew in stone bowl) from SGD Dubu, remember to also order an egg, because it does not come with by default. Overall this location far exceeds my expectations in terms of selections for being in a pricey neighborhood. Yes, I would still love to roam aimlessly and freely in the Super Hmart, but not having to trek out to the burbs is clutch, too. read more

I generally don't leave reviews but my experience with H-Mart at 711 W Jackson Blvd in Chicago has motivated me to leave one today. What should have been a typical trip to the store soon became an instance of racial profiling, as my family and I - the only Black family in the store - were constantly followed down every aisle. Regardless of where we were in the store, there was the same plain clothed 'security person' lurking and watching us. Neither my husband, daughter nor I were doing anything 'suspicious' or even remotely related to criminal activity; there was no cause for anyone to watch us shop. When I spoke to the manager about this blatant disrespect, I was dismissed with a simple statement of "she was just doing her job". To add further insult to injury, the same stalker/security officer who followed me and my family around the store approached us as we were leaving, with what I will describe as one the weakest excuses for poor behavior that I've ever heard. She comfortably disclosed that "the store has been experiencing liquor theft" and used that as justification to follow us because "my husband's coat looked puffy". I may have been willing to reasonably speak about this shameless stereotyping if it were not the middle of January; puffy coats are popular because they provide more than adequate protection against the cold of winter, as was evidenced by the high number of other patrons in the store wearing puffy coats - none of whom were Black and none of whom were followed through the store. I  can't say what makes this experience worse for me. Is it the idea of my family being racially profiled by someone from an ethnic group that, in recent times, have been singled out, harassed and physically harmed (or worse) for simply existing; someone that I would expect to be sympathetic to the plight of being systemically deemed to be 'less than'? Or is it the fact that the person who did it was so grounded in the false narrative crafted around people who look like me and my family that she is completely comfortable with not only doing it, but offering up the lamest, most unoriginal logic with the expectation that this would somehow make it all make sense? I understand how business and commerce works - my honest review of my experience in this store may not result in anything. It might not change the staff's views of certain types of people and it might not change the amount of business the store receives. I would hope that store manager(s) and/or owner(s) will read this - as well as all of the other negative reviews - learn from it and do better. The one thing that will change is where I do business ... it WILL NOT be here. read more

Clearly I wasn't the only person waiting months and months for this place to (finally) open because it. was. packed. We tried SGD in the food court and I ordered the chicken bulgogi bento box at $12. I was going to get the hot stone bibimbap but it was even pricier. The chicken bulgogi was great--hot and flavorful. The portion sizes are quite generous as well, but I found the prices to be pretty high compared to Del Seoul and so forth. $2 for a can of Diet Coke? Lunch for me and my husband came out to $36. Yikes. The food is really good and, after waiting about 15 minutes in line, came out quick. But there are limited tables. I'll likely come back in a couple of months when the rush dies down...to buy some premarinated bulgogi and make it at home. read more

HMart is not only one of my favorite grocery stores because of the amazing produce, but I also love it for the Korean food court and the macaroons! The produce is definitely the draw though. Fresh Asian produce, as well as some hard-to-get Latin produce. I usually go there for Thai basil, Chinese spinach, ong choy, pea tips, galangal, fresh water chestnuts, calabaza, yucca, plantains, African yams, yautía, lemon grass, all kinds of rice, sesame oil, fish and dumplings! Came with two banchan dishes (tofu sheets in sesame oil, kimchi). Very reasonably priced and I'll be back to try other dishes. We were able to find two seats even when it was packed around 12:30 on a Friday. read more

This place is great, really. I'm so glad that of all the cities they could choose to expand their suburban location, they chose the West Loop! Hmart's branding may be a Korean grocery store but they don't limit their items to Korean products. I honestly am a big of Mitsuwa, the Japanese supermarket in Arlington Heights but that's always a trek to make it there. Hmart is such a great in between because not only does it have Korean food items, it also carries a good selection of Japanese groceries! Sashimi, sushi, daikon radish, beef for shabu shabu, gazillion types of tofu products, etc. The produce is fresh. Yes you can get your American produce here too. I can't help but think that Hmart is taking away some market share from Mariano's nearby. Why 4 stars instead of 5? Well....so I tried signing up for their rewards program. The cashier gave me a form to fill in but I didn't have a pen. I walked over to the customer service counter and said to the lady I wanted to sign up. She then gestured to the entrance and asked me to go to the entrance of the store. I did that but there was nothing at the entrance except for a bunch flowers that the store received for their grand opening?! I then asked a nearby employee who was stocking the produce. He said ah, you have to go to the customer service counter. Well but I just did that. I got sent to the entrance. Between trying to figure how to get on the damn rewards prog and making sure we got home in time so my husband could catch his Manchester United game, I chose the latter. read more

My go to super market for anything related to Korean BBQ. I've gone here for groceries as well since there's a wide variety to choose from. Check on the meat section if you're planning to make your own KBBQ. You won't be disappointed with your selection. Be sure to scope out the pastry section as well for some good eats! A mix of food court and an Asian, mostly Korean grocery store - I was told. The grocery side has a very large assortment of Asian stuff. Like a lot. There is a produce section that looked good and with what appears reasonable prices. They also have seafood. Live and pretty cool The food court is decent. Had an udon soup at the Izakaya Yume shop. It was good. Have had better. What they are is very expensive. 10 dollars for a bowl of noodles, broth, maybe 3 ounces of thinly sliced steak and scallions. Nothing else. My son had a Poke bowl for 12. Again good but pricey. What they are is a welcomed addition to the area. Worth visiting. Think an Asian version of Eataly. Heard they are a chain. A new diverse addition. Worth trying. One thing... the restaurants are independent from the grocery store and u have to pay separately. Not that this is a problem. But when only the Korean BBQ has Coke and the others don't, you will have to get into two lines to get what u want which makes for a confusing experience. They also looked that they are still refining what they do. You can see everyone is like learning as they go. Hopefully they will get better. read more

As soon as I stepped inside the store it quickly became one of my favorite go to stores for Asian products. I seriously felt as if I was in Asia. Yes, I have been to Asia. They have a great selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood section, meat section, liquor section, and prepared foods. The employees are very, very nice and will answer any of your questions; and if you are not of Asian heritage like myself then you definitely will have lots of them. So don't be afraid and ask questions! Otherwise, how are you going to learn about these newly found amazing and delicious products? If you like Thai, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Indonesian or Chinese like I do, then, try your hand at cooking at least a simple Asian recipe! Even if its something as simple as figuring out how to make Thai iced tea. A friend of mine tells me that the deals are slightly better at the larger Hmart up in Niles. Also, he said that he preferred the restaurant food better up at the Joong Boo Market. I have to admit that I have not been to the either one of these other two but they are now on my list. Until I do get to check out the other two, I am more than sure that I will visit the Jackson St. location many times because the location just works out better for me. I purchased many things, too many to list. There were a few standouts like the marinated meat section where I purchased ribeye and pork. I cooked both of these meats up and ate them with rice with a side of kimchi. I impressed myself, although Hmart did the marinating for me. Also, the seafood section was quite impressive. I spoke with the head of the seafood and he was very nice, helpful and knowledgeable. I explained my dilemma that I have had ever since Issacson and Stein fish market closed on Fulton St. I have not been able to source fresh sardines to put on my grill ever since they closed! The manager said he could order for me any seafood I wanted with a one weeks advanced notice!! You have no idea how happy his response made me. So you never have had sardines on the grill?? You don't know what you are missing! With a little prep (Iberian style) and 5 minutes of grilling over hot charcoal on each side and you have just turned this plentiful and sustainable seafood source into one of the best seafood culinary experiences of your life! Serve with potatoes or rice any style, fresh bread, a slice of lemon, olives and cheese. Back to my experience at Hmart, it was great and I encourage all other adventurous eaters in the Chicago area to go out and enjoy food out of your comfort zone. We have a great demographic diversity in Chicago that is represented in our great food scene. So get off the side lines and dig in!! read more

Prices are super high on regular produce (organic bananas are $1.45/lb whereas competitors price at $1.29/lb), never mind the meats which are very very high and not of the highest quality. And, quality of produce really isn't that great compared to Whole Foods or Marianos. I'm happy it's around the corner for specialty stuff, but Hmart won't be my one-stop-shop by any means. read more

It's like the Niles H Mart and Whole Foods had a baby on the outskirts of Greektown. Groceries are beautiful and include veggies more popular in Asian cuisines, with reasonable prices. Amazing variety of fresh meat, seafood, and packaged goods and housewares! The Korean food stall (not the BBQ) offered fantastic value - spicy pork over rice was big enough for a light dinner for two with included pickles, salad, and soup. Cafe L'Ami baked goods were gorgeous and well-made, but prices were not competitive with bakeries in Chinatown or Uptown. read more

My first time coming to this market. I usually go to the location in Niles, IL. When I notice there are a H-Mart in the west loop I was impress and curious to see how's the market is. There are parking lot but it get full very quick. By the expressway therefore it's quiet busy. Interior design isn't that bad and there are many things to buy. The space is a bit tight due to the space of the store which usually be Staples. I will come back to this market again. There are something that caught my eyes. read more

In comparison with the other Korean grocery stores in the Chicago area, this one is like the neighborhood sized h mart. It does not have as many selections (or walking space) as any frequent Korean shopper would want, but it has the basics. There are little differences in price I learned from the one in Niles and here so cost wouldn't be of any surprise. I went on a weekday afternoon and the tables and seats at the food court were plentiful. I recommend getting your produce here before hopping on your Metra rather than the French market. Best things to grab: packs of ramen, kimbap, perilla leaves, and marinaded beef (you can buy them on sale and freeze them at home for later consumption). read more

Much smaller than the Super H-Mart and parking was inadequate at least for opening day - so if you're not an aficionado I'd suggest waiting for a week until things settle down. Hmart is amazing!! I went to this place for the first time yesterday and cannot say enough good things about it. I'll start with the restaurant portion. My partner and I chose to order from Izakaya Yume, which was delicious. We split the ramen (spicy) and the tuna poke bowl. Both were really good, and I would highly recommend them. The poke bowl specifically had a nice combination of flavors with a slight kick at the end. I loved the sauce on there and that both lettuce and rice were included in the mix with a generous serving of tuna. For the ramen, I really liked the ingredients, though my one complaint is the pork, which was really thin. I tend to prefer thicker pieces of pork that can really absorb the flavor of the broth. We were mostly full after those two dishes but decided to order a mango bubble tea with tapioca for dessert. Yum! I can't wait to go back to this place! The grocery store is also amazing! It has everything you could want to cook a delicious Asian feast. It also has a great selection of general grocery items. I have not been able to find fresh ramen noodles anywhere else in the city, and Hmart has several different options for this in their refrigerated section. My favorite portion is the very extensive mochi collection. I am already planning to go back this weekend with a list to make some homemade meals! read more

I don't think I get to appreciate this store as much as people who are familiar with the products they are selling. They have a huge selection of exotic fruits and unusual vegetables. Everything looks fresh and delicious, however everything is also overpriced. I really enjoyed the fish section, since it offers a great variety of meat, including shark (!), tuna, octopus, king crabs, and even some sea worms(I'm sorry but I felt nauseous when I saw that ). At the same time, the store has a huge selection of meat, prime beef, meat in marinades, and some weird meats I've never seen before such as pig kidneys (ew). The rest of the store is just very confusing. The isles are ridiculously small, so you barely fit with the cart alone there, but since the store is packed it's really irritating to try and walk through the isle without hitting anyone or bumping into a shelf. 99% of products were unknown for me and there is no good English description of items to understand at least what's in front of you. This store is located in Chicago and targets Chicagoans of all backgrounds, so it's kinda rude not to provide the description of their items. There is a parking outside of the store, however it has a limited number of spots, so be prepared to look for a parking somewhere else at your own expense. Overall, this store is solid 3 and I only imagine coming back for fresh fish with the hope it will remain being fresh in their store in the future. Please work on your business, it has a potential of being a cute spot, but not now. read more
