We have been looking for a place to try Pakistani food and finally went yesterday. Arriving just before noon, we opted for the upstairs instead of basement buffet. Found it easily because of all the taxis parked out front -- having read about cabbies eating here. No wonder -- it's on the block they're allowed to park for an hour to take a break. The woman behind the counter was very patient explaining the vegetarian dishes to me and the meat offering to my son. I expected nasty service based on reading the reviews. Maybe it gets bad when it's busier. All I can say is service was with a smile. She heated up our choices and told us to have a seat. When she came with all the food, offering her $20 to pay, she said -- No, enjoy your food, then you pay. Also with a smile! I chose lentils (yellow lentil with curry), green peas with cheese (soupier curry), and chick peas (unidentifiable flavor that I didn't like). All three of those vegetables left my tongue tingly. Thank goodness I had the delicious fresh naan bread, white rice, and salad and raitha (yogurt dip) to eat in between bites to restore my taste. After a while, I had to quit eating because nothing was helping to cool off the sensation. I polished off the green peas which were yummy, some lentils left, and almost all the chickpeas untouched. My son had chicken tiki masala, lamb biryani and the green peas. He enjoyed them all. We would go back if we are in the area. But, order less food since it was way too much. read more

Don't judge a book by its cover. You should know by now that food works the same way. And Haandi is one of those places. No frills. You go up to a buffet counter and pick your goodies from a wide selection of meats, curries, and vegetables. They'll spritz a little water on your platter and nuke it in the microwave to heat it up! Please reserve judgment until you taste. It's Haandi, not Daniel. My default is to get the Meat Platter here. $7.99 for 2 meats + 1 vegetable + rice (choice of white/brown) + hot naan. Get outta here! Close to halal cart prices.. but live a little and splurge that additional $2 for delicious Indian/Pakistani food in an actual restaurant. Alternate between naan and rice, use utensils or use your hands, do whatever you want, but be sure to finish all that curry!! This is not the time or place to think about your low carb diet. TIPS: Avoid sitting downstairs in the winter as it gets cold! You can pay after you finish eating or after you get your food, they're cool either way. Bottom line: You could always go to the countless other places in Curry Hill for a proper sit-down dinner.. but then you have to come back to Haandi anyways to get home because all the cabbies are there getting the real deal. read more

This place is funny: it's a hole in the wall that local Indian/Pakastani people seem to love. Cabs are always parked out front. Just don't try to order off the menu -- they should just take it down: your options are really only what you see behind the counter. It's true that the food is cold and not fresh: they microwave it right in front of you. But you can't beat the prices: $7.99 for a vegetarian platter that is a TON of food. However, the food is meh. I got some totally tasteless spinach, the naan was clearly stale. The counter isn't really designed as a takeout counter, you have to kind of reach over the crazily high counter to pay them, but it's still possible to get takeaway. The food is so so here , but the reason I'm writing is to point out how this restaurant behaved after a person I know lost a ring that belonged to his father who recently passed away, came right back with his friends to ask about it and were given a run around with different stories from the employees. The story changed 3 times as to who could have found the ring - it was the owners brother which then became a distant cousin which became a cab driver ?? They were first told that the security cameras would catch anything that happened but when pressed by police the story changed to the cameras don't work. The owner has not rallied to make this situation any easier. If you want to be frustrated by unhelpful employees, come to this place! This time I had the buffet downstairs.I went at 12:30. Shockingly, it was not packed.Everything was also clean. The Pakistani food was pretty good. I tried a bit of everything except the cabbage for the hot food. Meats ( chicken dishes i.e.-tikka masala, I forgot the rest of the names) The meats were well seasoned. Daal ( blended up seasoned lentils)l: The blended up daal was really good ( I love daal!). The rice was also good.The naan bread was thin,dry and burnt in some areas. For the vegggies: Cauliflower gone wrong! I love cauliflower and this cauliflower was not good. It tasted boiled smacked with curry on top. (bleh) The spinach too- it was just not seasoned right. Samosa ( potato in the middle): My favorite part of the meal.(I also love samosa's) Price:$10.( All you can eat) In all: I would probably come back if I'm craving Indian food again mainly for the rice and daal, and samosas. Freakin delish! Love the buffet style idea for Indian food, as I'm usually a tikka rookie and opt for the simpler things that I know as opposed to going more adventurous with my dining options. We were on the Lexington Ave bus, when I spotted this section of town with wall to wall small restaurants. We jumped off the bus, and chose Haandi. What luck! To be sure it was going to be good, we ordered one combo meet plate ($8); which had two meats, veggie, rice, and naan. Everything was tasty, service was fast (you pay at the end of the meal, which is brought to you). In particular, the stewed beef foot (my guess of what it was), was so succulent, with the skin and tendons and meat just stewed forever in a great curry. The sides were great too, especially the huge and freshly baked naan. Only thing missing was the free milk tea, which you get at Naan and Curry. So, we came back with our friends an hour later, and had two more plates, including lamb curry, and goat. My favorite is still the beef foot. You can't really go wrong with any of the stuff. There's also a buffet downstairs, but I like just getting a plate of food.. who knows what' s down the street? read more
