I came here to redeem the National burger deal, but ended up using a different reward. I love habit! I've practically had everything on the menu. I used the app to order. Ended up coming at the exact time it was finished. Which was perfect! The free reward was a kids meal with chicken bites, onion rings, gummy, and a strawberry lemonade. We also grabbed the new Baja fish sandwich and bbq bacon char with tempura green beans. The fish sandwich was ok, I think they overcooked the fish. The burger was actually better. A few days ago I received a couple of coupons from the Habit fast food restaurant here in San Marcos. Even though I've been a SM resident for many, many years.. I had never been to Habit for a burger. Since they offered me a free Cheeseburger I figured I'd stop by and try it. They are actually right across the street from In-N-Out where I frequent. Pro's: " The lady who took my order was very nice, efficient, and took the trouble to point out where the self-serve Ketchup, peppers, napkins, etc., were located. She also told me what was on the burger and asked me if I wanted cheese which I said: "Yes." I also ordered "small fries" and a "chocolate shake" and she graciously took my order. " The restaurant was clean and the people working there looked clean and seemed to work efficiently as a team. Con's: " I was there at 8:15 p.m. on July 27, 2026. There were only a half dozen people inside with me. The restaurant was mostly empty. Across at In-N-Out the line of cars were backed up as usual. " The food is CRAP! The cheeseburger was the size of my hand. The beef was tasteless and full of grit.. a sign of cheap hamburger meat. The patty was also small. Looks about 3 ounces. There were caramelized chopped up onions, lettuce, tomato, dill pickle, American cheese (not the expensive kind but the cheap version made with oil) and tasteless mayonnaise on an seeded bun. If they had at least made a simple dressing by adding Ketchup and some relish that would make a much better sauce. As it was, the cheeseburger was just bland. Nothing special. And, as I mentioned, the small portion of hamburger meat was tasteless and full of grit. " The French Fries were also crap. Even the French would have tossed them out although Fries were originally invented in Belgium. These fries were warm but greasy like you wouldn't believe! That's a sign of being fried in oil at a low temperature. If these were the standard frozen fries from Sysco or US Foods they were pre-blanched and should be cooked at 350f for a couple of minutes. They truly were the worst Fries I can remember trying to eat. After 3 or 4 I didn't eat any more. They are probably cooked in Canola oil (Rapeseed oil - the Rapeseed plant is mostly grown in Canada and nobody wanted to use the term Rapeseed as it doesn't sound nice so they call it Canada Oil - Canola). " The chocolate milkshake was crap! This was more like cheap soft-serve ice cream but just a bit thicker. However, it had some ice crystals in it and enough sugar to sink the Titanic! A few sips of that and I had to push it away. The chocolate shake at In-N-Out is real ice cream and thick and cold and not overly sweet. This Habit Shake was like tossing some chocolate syrup into milk, adding a LOT of sugar and turning it into a slush. Nope. Not worth the high price of over $6.00 (with added tax). The beef patty I had at Habit sure wasn't made from the better quality ground beef! What people don't realize, is that ground beef may not be made from the same cow! Beef cuts from more than one cow are placed together within the grinder and mixed. Therefore some ground beef can be a mixture of a fairly young but mature cow and an old cow! Mixing it is a way to smother the older, tougher meat so-to-speak. Last (but not least)... As you see from the photo of the receipt, the cost of the Fries was $3.99 and the Shake was $5.99. With Tax the total of the order was $10.75. If the Cheeseburger had not been free, it would have cost $7.29. So with tax on that burger and adding all the other items.. the total price would have been $18.60. For that quality?! That's crazy! I can go across the street to In-N-Out and get a Double Double with 2 higher quality beef patties, 2 cheese patties, their special sauce, onion, lettuce, tomato, pickle etc., and a small boat of fries including a REAL, thick chocolate milkshake for $13.00. Again, what would a single cheeseburger with one small 3 oz. patty, fries and a chocolate shake cost at Habit? $18.60. Ain't no way Jose! I'm never going back! read more

I can't come back here any more. Don't get me wrong, the food is still fine ... for the most part. But, the prices here have become beyond outrageous. Used to be able to feed the family here for less than $30. Now, it costs us over $60. And don't go blaming this on the minimum wage hike or tariffs, other fast food places have been paying their workers over $20/hr for years and you can still get a full meal there for $5-$8 a person. But where Jack-in-the-Box and In and Out have remained cheap and reasonable burger spots, Habit has gone full McDonald's and is gouging the crap out of customers. Sure, their Charburger is still tasty. But, that $16 charge for a meal is not worth it when you get can a Double Double next door with a shake for $10. I like being able to get A1 and Worcestershire Sauce to dip in and all, but not THAT much. Plus, their salads have dropped off in quality and freshness in the last few years. And those Fried Avocado Slices are some of the worst sides I have had the displeasure to put in my mouth in decades. I make good money and all, but Habit Burgers is no longer worth it. This was my second time to this restaurant. I really like the year it was started 1969...I was born that year. So, my friend took me for a burger, I got a club sandwich. Let me details this: crispy buttered toast, perfect charred chicken, smoky bacon, ripe avocado. Seriously, my mouth had an organic. Tne fries...we had all 3! The sweet potato ones actually had width, not just stringy ones. The greenbean ones were actually bigger than my ones you normally pick out of a garden! They could change a toddler from hater to "oh, can I have another one please"? The French fries were perfection. The "accouterment" bar was AWESOME, peppers, jalapeños, ketchup and other necessities. I went in and there were barely any customers there so I opened the food back home, thinking they didn't add tomatoes and when I opened the bag, the first thing I see is tomatoes. I'm just very disappointed because I should NEVER have to open a whole container and open the wrapper just to check if there's tomatoes or not before leaving if I'm taking it to go. The Habit is my favorite spot for a delicious burger. I usually order the CHARBURGER. It has crisp lettuce, fresh tomato, caramelized onions, pickles, and mayo on a toasted bun. It's hard to pick between fries and onion rings, so I usually order half of each...makes it easier. The SANTA BARBARA CHAR is my second favorite. It is a double Char with cheese and avocado on grilled sourdough. I have ordered both of these items with additional cheese, bacon, and avocado for an additional cost. I have tried the Charburger and Santa Barbara Char lettuce wrapped as well, still just as good as the original. There are menu items that DO NOT contain wheat or gluten so it makes it easy to find something for everyone to enjoy. This location is conveniently located off of Highway 78. The shopping center is small and the parking lot is busy. They have indoor/outdoor dining options. Why have I not come here earlier? We always knew it's around but we just never thought of this place for burgers. The food was Delicious!!!! The burgers were juicy, especially with the portobello mushrooms, and the fries are only second to McDonald's! The prices were reasonable as well, not as pricey as five guys and burger lounge, but you still get non fast-food style food and service. The staff were also very friendly. It seems like they have an app where you can order food and just come in to pick up, especially useful during rush hour lunchtime. Oh and they have tempura green beans which was a unique item not commonly seen at burger joints. They were delicious too! If you like spicy, you can go for the ones with the spicy sauce. Honestly this is probably one of my favorite places to get a burger. I love that you can get a free birthday burger! So definitely sign up for the newsletters. One burger really fills me up! Years ago I'd have to go to San Marcos to get this, so I'm really glad they opened this in Escondido! There's so much parking here. It's a bit hard coming here from east of the location though. You have to make a u-turn since one of the sides is blocked off because of a cement thing in the middle of the road. Both the drive-thru and in-store is fast during normal times. But during COVID, the in-store experience is a bit slower.
