Aloha folks! Was out in Escondido and drove by a Wiernerschnizel. There aren't too many of these left. I decided to stop in and have lunch. The staff was friendly and efficient. There were a total of four shaded tables for those wanting to eat at this location and parking was limited. I ordered the All American Meal which consisted of two corndogs and a small order of fries. A drink was not included and had to be purchased separately. Overall the meal was satisfying. I probably could have done without the second corndog and wished they included a small soft drink in its place. The breading on the corndogs was sweet and the mustard kicked ithe taste up a notch. I was glad I stopped in. It brought back some memories of when Wienerschinitzel was everywhere and how I used to eat there when I was a teen. read more

The food is impeccable. I mean really how can you not like Chili Dogs and Chili Cheese Fry's?! The service here drive thru or walk up has always been great in my opinion quick and easy and they seem as friendly as can be for the miniature or two interaction. This is the perfect "fast food" place as it's so quick. The ambiance is what it is. You sit outside if you stay and get to watch the cars speed by. This place takes me back! I didn't know what to get, because everything looked amazing. I ordered from their favorites menu. I got the kraut dog, Chicago dog, and Texas dog. All three were great, my favorite was the Texas Dog. As I sat there eating, I kept seeing a sign for a root beer float, so I caved. Totally worth it! It's been around since I was a kid, and it brings back fond memories of summer chili dog lunches. This is a great meal every once in a while, when you need chili fries or a corn dog fix. I love that you can upgrade the hotdog, bun, toppings or fries! I've had an all beef chili dog with cheese and onions on a pretzel bun, and it was great. They have limited time specialty dogs, like Oktoberfest or BBQ favorites sometimes. The other star is the soft serve! I'm not sure if it's still Foster Freeze, but it tastes like it. They make a mean banana split, and those are hard to find these days. The texture of the soft serve is like taffy, and it puts a McDonald's sundae to shame! It's also great that they're open late, because it makes a great opportunity to get late nite dessert when everyone else is closed! read more

First time ever at Wienerschnitzel. Got the chili cheese dog and the Chicago dog. Wow! What a treat! Both dogs tasted great. And the hotdogs were very flavorful. It's a bit of a drive for me so probably won't be going there a lot but will definitely stop by if I'm in the area. Great prices also. I think that one in Convoy literally got burned down. RIP. This location has kept its unique triangle shape with a very short drive-thru and small parking lot. Be warned that if you do go into the drive-thru, you will not be able to turn back into the parking lot and be forced to turn into the main street. Service was good but the speaker is a bit hard to hear and service was very slow, shockingly slow. I had a digital coupon with a code and the worker helping me at the time turned me down. I haven't had issues in the past, so just be prepared with your physical coupons here. I just want to end this intro with the shock I have that Wienerschnitzel is extremely expensive now. I remember being able to get a solid meal for 2 with $10, but now that barely covers a solo meal. Chili Cheese Dog: 3.5/5 I need to admit that the standard for a chili cheese dog is indeed Wienerschnitzel's, but that standard starts at 70%. The hot dog, chili, cheese, onions, everything is super mild and barely passable as "real" food, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I love the hotdogs they use here for their smooth and not overly aggressive salted flavor, but the lack of any sort of snap is really sad. Something that worries me is that the chili is shockingly starchy and translucent rather than a thick hardy chili. This does satisfy a craving that no other place can really do though. Mini Corn Dogs: 4/5 Just as legendary as their hot dogs, Wienerschnitzel's corn dogs, especially their mini ones are just as good. The coating is crispy with a slight sweetness without being overly greasy. The batch I had today was very aggressively salted, but normally that is not the case. The hot dog inside is the same as they use in their other hot dogs and has a very mild taste that allows that cornmeal batter to shine. A great option for picky eaters. read more

Don't get me wrong, Wienerschnitzel is my favorite fast food. But today was a complete failure. Ok, maybe not a complete failure because the corn dog was good, and so was the chili cheese dog. However... The fries were terrible! They tasted like they were deep fried, microwaved, and then fried again. They were so bad that after trying just a few fries, we threw them out. Tossed. Gone. Many people today don't realize how nostalgic and special Der Wienerschnitzel is (they dropped the Der long ago but this is what it used to be in it's hey day). This is now a relatively scarce fast food chain and one that really brings back the memories for us '70s and '80s kids. I'm actually very grateful we have one of these accessible in Escondido, they're just truly far and few between today. The menu is still there for those old enough to remember when: Chili Dogs, Chili Cheese Dogs, Chili Cheese Fries, Kraut Dogs, etc, only now, they have many new items. The place is great and offers a huge selection of foods beyond hot dogs and corn dogs including burgers, Mexican food, and fantastic soft serve ice cream. This particular store has some nice kids running it and they try and get your order correct and get it done quickly. If they don't, just politely tell them and they'll make it right. To give you a sense of how cool this place is, I vividly remember eating a Chili Cheese Dog in 1983 and remember how it tasted. It tastes EXACTLY the same! When we were kids and didn't have any money, we could hit this place up and stuff ourselves sick for under $5! Times have changed and so have prices, but the big W really hasn't. Come here at least once to twice a month. Yet another establishment that seems plagued with staffing issues in todays economy. Never go through the drive through as most places seem to constantly mess things up even after repeating orders back. Will easily stand 5-10 minutes before having someone come up to take my order then while ordering get blasted with the exhaust of a portable AC coming from the 2nd order window. Constantly cut by "door dashers" that seem to think they're priority. Quite frustrating. From time to time orders will be wrong In some way that get corrected. I will continue to come back but just know it's not the best, friendliest and may need food checked for correctness. read more

Wienrschnitzel lacks the panache of sonics but it's basic approach to dogs and desserts gets the job done at a fair price. The problem with hotdogs is that one rarely fills you up. I ordered the Chicago dog and they did a great job making it look like a real Chicago style dog. There were sport peppers, onions, tomatoes, and even seasoning salt. One could argue that it was 70% condiments, and 30% dog but the flavor was 100%. One of these did fill me up for lunch. .25 cent mini corn dogs..
