The food, service and ambiance has always been top notch for decades. It's an old standby for me on lazy days when I don't feel like cooking or eating anything too filling for either lunch or dinner. The thing that I like best about Boudin is . . . Everything! From their Soups, to the Sandwiches and Salads, the Pizzas, Flatbreads, and the Bakery items, there is something special here for you. My favorites are way too many to list, but I especially do love the Tomato Bisque Soup in a Sourdough Bread Bowl. It comes with croutons and shaved cheese for the top. Sometimes I want soup, but don't feel like making all the elements from scratch. The Grilled Brie, Havarti with Apples & Fig Jam Sandwich is perfectly toasted and tart, as well as sweet. The sandwich has a crusty outer coating of Parmesan. Very savory. I love all their sandwiches, both hot and cold. All their sandwiches come with a little Side Salad (with Balsamic Vinaigrette) or a bag of Kettle Chips. You can't go wrong here. From the Bakery, I like their Chocolate Croissants and Blueberry Scones. But really, anything sweet at Boudin Bakery is delectable and fresh. read more

I like this place. I have been coming here for years. It was quick to order as well which is nice and everything was clean. The only issue is where they store the pastries, there are flies, but I am not afraid of flies lol and still wanted a pastry. I came in after my hair appointment on May 30th with my mom. She ordered a half sandwich and salad combo and I ordered a half of turkey sandwich with clam chowder combo. I paired my meal with a dirty Dr. Pepper that I made there and my mom got a coke. We also ordered 2 chocolate chips cookies which were soft! And she got a coffee cake. Everything was tasty while we ate our lunch outside. Will definitely be back to eat more clam chowder. read more

As an avid Boudin lover throughout my life, this location is as great as others! Their bread is always fresh and any of their food items are absolutely delicious. During my most recent visit (on a weekend), I went inside to order and take our food to-go. It was very easy to order, especially with the kind staff, and our food was ready quickly. Really easy to find parking that's convenient. Made the trip in and out quite fast. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich and my friend ordered the turkey cranberry sandwich. Both were delicious, but my favorite was definitely the chicken salad sandwich. The red grapes really add flavor and a nice crisp crunch. Honestly you could order anything off their menu and it would be delicious. read more

After 30 minutes waiting for my food families food, mine came out along with my daughters and the soup was tepid at best. After ten more minutes of waiting I had to go back up and ask where my wife's food was, a salad and soup. The girl behind the counter was less than pleasant. First time at this location and as a superfan of Boudins, I was highly satisfied with this visit. My family were all in the mood for soup bowls, and like usual, the broccoli cheddar did not disappoint. I also split a Patti melt with the wifey and yes, this is perfection. They say that the bread is made fresh every day and I was like "yeah right". I took a bite of my BLT with avocado and exclaimed to myself "it is made fresh!" That is probably the freshest sourdough I have ever had. Usually the stuff between the bread makes the sandwich, but this time it was the bread which is a rare exception. I would definitely order again because they follow directions, food was excellent, and they packaged it really well with lots of napkins which I love because you never know when you are going to need a napkin. I always carry napkins in my back pocket. I use them to blow my nose, wipe up a spill, use as a tablecloth for my food when sitting at the park, give to someone if they are crying, and in worse case scenarios...TP. I arrived as soon as they opened and was the first and only customer. After I placed my order I watched for ten minutes while no one was cooking or preparing food in the kitchen. No one looked in my direction at all. After 15 minutes I went to ask a worker if there was a problem with my order. No apology, just, It's coming soon. The grilled cheese with bacon was not good, the cheese was not melty, it was dry, and it was a salt bomb. I continue to like Boudin SF (see my earlier review) but I am getting annoyed at how often the bread is stale stale stale in the sandwiches. You'd think that a place calling itself a bakery would always have fresh bread, but about 1/4 of the time when I get a sandwich the bread is unbelievably stale. Just now I had a turkey cranberry sandwich, and the bread was so stale I had to discard it and eat the insides with a fork. In the three years since I wrote my first review of Boudin SF we have probably bought 100 sandwiches from them, and maybe 25 of those hundred had noticeably stale bread; for 10 of that 25 the bread was "throw it away and eat it with a fork". read more

Most of my 100's of reviews share appreciation, but this is the second time Boudin's San Marcos has had problems with their special order bakery. Friday the 14th my lady ordered a large turtle loaf which the person on the phone said would be ready Sunday after 10. When I arrived that morning the young woman at cash register said there wasn't any special orders under her or my name. In fact they didn't have large turtles that could be specialty ordered. I asked for the manager and another woman responded confirming there was no special orders, but after providing specifics for the order she disappeared for 5 minutes as i heard another person say yes it's here. The 'manager' eventually brought back the loaf and said no one followed procedures, took my payment without an apology. The same problem happened last year when we ordered the large turtle but the manager then was gracious. Sorry to share my frustrations. read more

This place is great! Every holiday we go for sourdough rolls, so so good! Their clam chowder soup is great, even picked up a couple cans of it on this trip. Purchased one of the best brownies I've ever had, decadent! Friendly staff and great service. Everything we've tried has just been great, I try something different every time we go. We got a turkey made from sourdough rolls for thanksgiving and a Santa made the same way for Christmas, everyone loved both. If you haven't already, give them a try. read more

From the first impression we almost walked out. The tables were covered with dirty dishes unbussed and the floor was sticky from spilled drinks. The bathroom soap containers were off the wall and laying on the sink. Thankfully they had a little soap but they needed to be filled and placed back in the wall. The paper products were out in one stall. We ordered and waited, and waited and waited. It was not busy. Finally our food arrived and it looked like it had been thrown on the plate and suffered damages in the process. They did offer another piece of bread to put the sandwich back together. Why not do that before you deliver the food? Luckily the food tasted amazing. They are either short staffed or poorly trained but I won't be coming out of my way to eat here and even then I'll order online for a pick up before dining in. I knew it would be a wait since the place was full when I first came in but it should not take that long for soup and half a sandwich that just needs to be put together to be serves. Yup a 3, this place definitely hits the mark of "ok". As a part of the Boudin club, the free bread is definitely a plus as the bread (surprise!!) is the best part. My frustration with Boudin is that it's a bit pricey for the amount of meat that they put on their sandwiches and even more by the care or lack of care that they tend to use in making them. While I have come to expect the sandwich to not be overflowing with meat, I do expect that maybe both sides of it, contain said meat. It is frustrating to eat half your sandwich, then move on to the other half and not have it be the same. I have gotten into the habit of opening them up to move around the insides. My husband I eat here nearly every day and some days, like today, I wonder why. The food is good but the inconsistency in its preparation is a big problem. I've spoken with the manager about this and given him several examples but while he said he'd talk to the staff about it nothing has changed. Sometimes when they're out of an ingredient they'll make a substitution or just make the item without it without letting the customer know. Or sometimes ingredients will simply be left out, even though they have them. And today was probably the worst. First of all, I ordered a "Pick-A-Pair" which is, in my case, a half sandwich with a half salad and my husband ordered a full salad. When the cashier, who's relatively new but should have known better by this time, told me the total I said it was wrong. He read back to me what he had and it sounded right ("a half sandwich and a half salad"" and the full salad) but the total price was way higher than it should have been. I told him I ordered the same things yesterday and the total was much lower and he just shrugged. When I got my receipt I saw that he'd put the Pick-A-Pair in as a half sandwich and a half salad but the charge was for a full sandwich and a full salad. I pointed the error out to another employee and she immediately corrected it and gave me a refund for the overcharge. Then, after a while, the food came: You'd think that a salad called "Chicken, APPLE, Walnut" would have APPLE in it. There wasn't any. It was also supposed to have white cheddar cheese but instead had at least some bleu cheese. You'd also think that a salad called "Asian Citrus CHICKEN Salad" would have CHICKEN in it. There wasn't any. Another ingredient was also conspicuously missing. There have been other times ingredients have been missing from salads or sandwiches just because the kitchen folks neglected to put them in. I guess it's the times when everything is right that keep us coming back but I'm starting to wonder whether we should and whether the manager really did "talk to the staff about it" as he said he would and, if he did, whether he's ever checked up to see if his talking did any good. After looking over their vast menu, I ended up ordering the beet salad that came with a small sour dough roll. Hubby had a burger with fries. I liked my salad and thought the dressing was perfectly tart. It went well with the beets, berries, and pickled onions. The one negative was that they had tossed in too many of the romaine lettuce cores. They could've picked them out after chopping the lettuce. Overall, the restaurant was clean and comfortable. Are you hear about once a week for the last few months while I'm working in the area they brought out my Caesar salad with the dressing on top like it was a wet burrito. I said I was very output by it. I ate about half of it and then I left. They did it to me again today weeks later and I said I don't want it. I'm grossed out. I'm not gonna eat it when I tried to tell the gentleman what is Caesar salad is supposed to look like and why you don't put dressing on the croutons like that he got rude with me like he was offended, but I didn't like his crappy salad. If I'm in the San Marcos area for a run to the Costco business Center, I try to make it a point to go to Boudin SF. I went about lunchtime the other day and although the line was a bit long, it move pretty quickly. I decided during my visit to order their "pick a pair" option. I ordered their clam Chowder as that is what they're known for other than their sourdough bread and their BLTA (bacon,lettuce,tomato, avocado) sandwich. I didn't wait very long for my order as service was prompt. The BLTA sandwich had crispy bacon, sweet tomato Slices,lettuce and creamy avocado slices on perfectly toasted slices of sourdough bread. The bowl of clam chowder was creamy, plenty of clams and it hit the spot on a chilly time.. Everything was delicious and everyone that worked there was friendly and helpful! Let me start by saying that I have been a huge fan of Boudin, and the San Marcos location, for many years -- have been a member of their loyalty program "forever", have recommended it often, and we come here often. Unfortunately, tonight will be the last time. We arrived before the "dinner rush" (about 5:15pm) and placed our order to dine in. When we sat down there were only 2 other tables occupied (who had already been served) and no line. 15 minutes later they brought my husband the wrong meal, and nothing for me. 5 minutes after that they brought my sandwich -- a French Onion Melt, which I've had before and enjoyed. Unfortunately the bread was barely toasted and had huge holes in it, the onions were not caramelized and barely even soft / warm, and there was no dipping liquid, which I requested when the sandwich was delivered. 5 minutes later they brought part of my husband's meal (soup / sandwich combo) but no dipping liquid for my sandwich or his, which we requested again. 5 minutes later they brought the rest of his meal but no dipping liquid so we asked again. 5 minutes after that, they finally brought the dipping liquid for me but not for him. So 35 minutes after ordering we still didn't have our entire meal, and what had already been delivered was cold and, sadly, almost inedible. Frankly, I was stunned -- I've never had a bad experience at Boudin before, but this was horrific. And they seemed not to care a bit that the service and food were subpar. Downgrade (2022 review). It had been over ten years since my last visit and needless to say it's a definite thumbs down now. Boudin is like Panera Bread. Both used to be good but over the years they've cut too many corners and are simply overpriced for mediocre food. * Their salads are drenched with dressing (other reviewers have been complaining about this for years). Be sure to state "dressing on the side". * Long slow line. Only one cashier. * Frugal with the deli meat. * Small bread slices make a very small sandwich. * They did have a pretty good iced tea. * Their bread isn't very tasty considering this is a "San Francisco" sourdough.
