For someplace with such a quintessentially lovely fried appetizer -- the much lauded onion loaf -- their french fries certainly do suck. Really, they are pallid, tasteless things that have spent most of their lives in the freezer. The waitress promised us a "bottomless" plate to share, but the ones we got weren't even worth finishing. I also have to dis the Hackney Burger. Pre-formed, ovoid, with no discernible grilled taste. I ordered a salad from the specials list (to make up for indulging in the aforementioned onion loaf) which was just fine, but the bite I took from hubby's burger reminded me why I never liked the things. This Hackney's is an institution -- it has been open since 1939. Like the North Shore brat I am, I've had many meals here over many years. Oh so sad to leave you and not return however, after receiving two turkey burgers ( one was so well done I thought it was literally a hockey puck then the second was under-cooked and raw in the middle) I am now convinced there are far better restaurants to spend my hard earned money at. We are moving to a local neighborhood and were excited to try out Hackney's, which is famous in Glenview. If this place ever had a peak it is well past it. The food was the worst I had in years, it is just bland, non-descriptive; makes you feel yucky and lethargic. I imagine the retirees that frequent this place don't mind- but the rest of us, accustomed to at least decent food, will find this place as a black hole where flavor goes to never be heard from again. The prices, for what you get, are crazy. A burger is ten bucks with cheese for a dollar more. The menu is very limited, which you would think allows Hackney's to perfect the few items they sell. Instead they just produce below average burgers and sandwiches. Even something as simple as fries or their onion loaf comes out limp and just soaking in grease. I cannot imagine this place lasting once the boomers are all gone, morbid but true. (I do want to say that the staff is nice and efficient. There's a little white playhouse in the corner of the outdoor seating area that I used to play in when I was little. And while that is looking a bit decrepit these days, Hackney's hasn't changed a bit. The onions. Gotta get the onions. Smother them in ketchup. By the end, the fork will be thrown to the side and your fingers will be red and greasy. Mmmmmm.... And the burgers. And the salads. And the soups. Everything. Hackney's is yummy. Inside: dark wood and cozy booths with a bar serving the old-timers (or regulars) who are probably wearing deck shoes and a polo shirt, but anyways... Outside: awesome outdoor dining. Bring bugspray (especially for dinner). Seriously. Its kinda in the shade, surrounded by trees and shubbery and, well, thats where the bugs hang out. Good times. Women tottering around in 4 inch heels on uneven paver bricks. Kids running around screaming and playing. Yeah- quite the place to be seen! Hackney's is loved by many- and if obnoxious kids with adoring (but obviously hearing impaired) parents were not there polluting the peace, it would have made the place better. We are talking about 8-10 screaming kids. No one seemed to think it was a problem, an issue, or even out of the ordinary. Call me a crabby ass- but really. I had to wonder for a second if we were at Chuckie cheese- then I saw the woman with 3inches of pancake makeup- skintight pants and low cut shirt and 4 inch heels out to lunch with her college aged son(?). I slowly remembered, nope- not CC- just in the northern burbs! So- off the ambiance and onto the food. I had a grilled cheese. Yeah- really exciting. We even splurged an extra dollar for a slice of tomato on top (high class place and all). My grilled cheese was good. Instead of giving us each fries, they gave my friends and I a plate of fries to share- and told us we could ask for more. It was not a large plate by any means- but considering i was not eating them- no problem. My guys enjoyed their food. The place could be fun to hang out at. I felt like I was in a huge back yard with a waitress to help me out. It was not too fancy, drinks might have been great. Instead, I was internally cheering for pancake face to trip and fall, and for the kids to SHUT UP! Yeah- I had a killer headache- but really, there were other patrons there. It seems that these people felt it was their right to make the entire space their back yard. The waitstaff did not seem to care. Had fond memories about Hackney's on Harms from college, but either my memory or the place has slipped a lot. Just went there for a late lunch on Sat afternoon and had to (a) request menus after being seated and no one coming by (and we were seated right in front by the hostess stand/water station/gate), (b) ask for a server to come and take our order after again no one came by after several minutes and no drinks and (c) get up and ask another server for refills after again no one coming by even though all three sodas and a beer were empty for some time. At least the kids got their sodas right away but it was probably 10 min for my beer, at which point we had finished our meals. Other people around us seemed to be getting better service, so maybe it was just our server - I am not sure but I am not going to go back to find out. Ambience - 4 stars. Food - 2 stars. I went here with the bike club. It is right off the bike path so it is a great location. We came at night and enjoyed the beautiful, large outside patio. They also had love jazz music which was really classy. The ordered the Hackney burger with cheddar on pretzel bun- it was delicious. They serve bottomless fries which is pretty impressive. read more

Going with a group of 5 or more ? Definitely head to the Lake Street location (just east of Waukegan Rd - where they can accommodate larger groups - AND it always helps to call first for "reservations".) But couples and/or parties of 4 or less should head over to the original Hackney's on Harms which has the same good food but in a more more intimate, other (past) worldly atmosphere with a nameless kind of charm about it. Unless you simply must have your burger on a traditional bun - definitely have it on the outstanding dark rye with (as reviews of the Lake St. location have suggested - unless you hate onions order the burger with the full specturm of onion options ( the raw and grilled that come with the burger- comp on request) and just go for broke and get a FULL order of the fried onion rings (only $1+ more than the half order;- they make for a yummy appetizer and an excellent extra layer of indulgent goodness when added on top of the burger. Communal fries come with most orders and are better than average. To those of us who grew up eating or at least knowing about Hackney's - NOT ordering a Burger (especially on the Pumpernickel rye) almost seems sacrosanct - but there are other good options (many go for the Reuben or the Frrench DIp - or the unusually good Vegetarian grilled cheese and tomato (on your choice of bread - I recommend the dark rye.) I don't mean to exaggerate or raise undue expectations - this is just a really good burger (including the Buffalo burger which is remarkably moist - considering the lean-ness.) Both the Lake St. and Harms locations are worthy considerations for the right kinds of occasions. read more

I've been going here for 30 years or so and have to say the service has gotten so awful I stopped going and tonight proved my point. Never have I had a demand for a larger tip by a waitress in person over lack of space for turnovr. Blaming the customer is a definite no no these days. It's not going to win any Eater Chicago awards, but the old-school chow at Hackney's does the trick. While I thought the Hackneyburger and the fish & chips were only average, you come here for the "Brick" of French-fried onions and the Candy Cane Pie, which is as ridiculous as it sounds. Service is gruff but solid and the prices are very fair...I even washed this meal down today with a whiskey sour, I was feeling so good! I heard about this place from a buddy of mine. Decided to give it a whirl one night. We drove by it like four times without even knowing it. The street that it's on has no street lights. Whammy. Staff was welcoming and very friendly. Both of us heard glorious things about the Hackneyburger, so we both ordered one. I was a little disappointed with the lack of other ingredients [I didn't know that I had to request lettuce and tomato]. Double whammy. The burger itself was very good, though. Another plus is the bottomless fries. They weren't extraordinary, but I love bottomless anything. Overall, my experience was a-ok. Solid CORNED BEEF on dark rye bread with fries. Overall solid sandwich with good bread. Corned beef was moist and not too salty. The kicker was the HORSERADISH. It's the real deal and will clear your sinuses! Fries are good as usual. Went on Saint Patrick's Day around 6 so the place was a very festive sea of Kelly green. We were able find a seat at the bar after pounding a few pints and listening to bag pipes and the nice piano lady with perfect posture. Bragged to my family about how good Hackneys food is, as I had eaten here many years ago and thought it would not have changed. Boy was I wrong!! The famous onion loaf was not a loaf but heap of fried onios that may have been siting iut for a while. For the price you would think they would serve it with a few "signature" dipping sauces. My husband added salt to give it a bit of flavor. Burgers were a BIG dappointmen! Buns not toasted, served with a small piece of lettuce, tomato and onion which you have to request. Of all the Hackney's this one is by far the best. I've extolled the virtues of Hackney's in reviews of its other locations, but I suppose it bears repeating here. A hackneyburger, medium rare with swiss cheese and grilled onions plus a half brick of onions is pretty much my perfect indulgence. Burgers cooked and seasoned perfectly. I really, really wanted to give Hackney's a glowing review. We've been eating here for years and the burgers are always great. After much discussion, we chose Hackney's for our first time dining out since the pandemic. We chose Hackney's in part because they were already set up for outside dining so it seemed like a safer option than any restaurant that just threw up a few tables outside. 2 of us (out of 4) arrived on Sunday, early evening. We signed up on the waiting list, were told the wait was about half an hour, and returned to our car to await the arrival of our friends. When they showed up about 5 minutes later, we all headed to the little area they have set aside for waiting. First thing we noticed were that only about half the people there were wearing masks though people were practicing social distancing. But as we waited, a group of 6 or 7 people ended up almost crowding us out as they tried to get 2 elderly members of their party situated (the other members just stood around hovering, way too close for comfort). While we were waiting a man came around and asked if we'd like something to drink. We ordered soda and tea which was delivered promptly. A few minutes later, one of our friends was handed the check (yeah, I get it... they don't know which one of us was paying) and specifically told that we had to pay the man. As my friend was digging in his wallet for money, we were called back and seated -- probably just under the half hour wait. I don't understand, especially as were were being seated, why we couldn't just add the check for the drinks to the one for the meal. I was going to ask about that but my friend, who unsuccessfully tried to get the attention of the man who handed him the check, paid one of the servers just behind where you check in. The tables are spaced apart and good intervals but we noticed that virtually none of the diners were wearing masks. Now, I get that you can't eat with your mask on, but I was somehow expecting people who were perusing the menu or just sitting around talking without food in front of them would be wearing masks. A couple of minutes after we were seated, the man who took and delivered our drink ordered came over and demanded that we pay for it. Our friend explained that he had paid "one of the guys up front." The man walked off and then came back a minute or so later to ask if he paid cash or credit card. The friend replied that he had paid cash. The man asked him again who he had paid and my friend restated that he gave the cash and the check to one of the guys up front. Not sure what that was about but it didn't leave us with the warm fuzzies. It felt almost like we were eavesdropping on some private moment. The ordering went fine and soon the onion "brick" and Reuben egg rolls came out. The brick desperately needed salt, but our server had disappeared. The Reuben egg rolls were delicious. I didn't taste any sauerkraut (which is fine with me) and the egg rolls were nicely crunchy. Definitely the high point of the meal. A little bit later, the food was delivered by 2 food runners. We ordered a bratwurst platter, a burger, the fish & chips and a French dip sandwich. All the food except the bratwurst platter definitely lacked salt, but again there was no one to ask (I ended up running out to my car to get some of those little packets of salt). We kept an eye out for our waitress, but she never once came to check on us until the end when she simply asked if we wanted the check. Only after we left did we realize that none of us had gotten the french fries that were supposed to come with 3 of the meals (all except the bratwurst) nor did the person who ordered the fish get the promised bread (which the server asked about when we ordered - did she want it before or with the meal to which she replied with the meal). All in all it seems like they don't quite have their act together which of course makes us wonder if they are actually doing all the behind the scenes stuff to keep themselves and their customers safe. Hackney's is always a favorite. This was the first time I had ever been to the one on Harms. I was expecting a stuffy atmosphere, bein gin the North Shore, and was suprised to find that it was very laid back. A little gross considering they just got over the infestation of cicedas. As for the food, you have to get the fired onion block. Is is just a huge mound of battered and fried onions and tastes ohhh so good. Their ruben sandwich is to die for! It's just how it should be greasy and covered in dressing. Being pregnant makes this my new favorite spot to indulge my cravings. I only gave it four stars because our waiter was not very friendly and kept getting out drink orders wrong. He really didn't want to be working and you could tell. read more

The best Irish style bar/grill in ILLINOIS! Definately check out this restuarant! Hackney's on Harms is the ORIGINAL Hackney's that was opened don't be fouled by the one down a few blocks away. My dad got a job at Hackneys when he was a teen as the chef. His best friend's dad was the head bartender at the time and his friend worked as a waiter I believe. The summer patio is great, but I advise staying away from it since it is the 17th year of the cacada where the bugs come up in the masses so outdoor seating isn't your best choice this season. read more

Hackney on Harms, Don't waste your hard earned money on this place. We saw this restaurant on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, and I have to say I am shocked at how bad the food was! Either that show is a big sham, or this restaurant went all out when he was reviewing them, and got sloppy after. I wish we'd checked Yelp before we went there. We went in a group of 5, and were told we would have to wait 10-15 minutes. So we got drinks at the bar and waited. The restaurant was packed, like a tin of sardines. The tables are really close together and once we sat down, we were constantly getting bumped by the staff and other patrons. We ordered their 'brick' of French Fried Onions for appetizers, for the table to share. When they came, they were sitting in a little puddle of oil, and had no flavor to them at all. The batter was completely bland - no salt and no taste, completely soggy, it wasn't even crisp. It was so soggy, that the batter seemed boarder -line raw. One bite of this, and my husband was giving me the I-can't-believe-you-dragged-us-all-here looks, and I realized that the rest of the food was going to be as bad. I wish they had proven me wrong! I ordered the Inside/ Out Hackneyburger and my husband the original hackneyburger. Mine came with tomatoes and a leaf of lettuce in it, but it was dry. At the absolute center of the burger I got a nice bacon and cheese flavor, but most of it was bland, and what bothered me most was the lack of mayonnaise or anything in it. The restaurant was so busy that I was unable to ask a waitress for any, and when she finally came to the table to ask how everything was, I was almost done. My husband's burger was even worse. There was nothing in it! No lettuce, tomatoes, nothing! He's lactose-intolerant, and did not ask for cheese to be added, which made it worse. The burger completely lacked flavor, there was absolutely no spice or herbs or salt in it. It tasted like just plain meat. His burger did come with coleslaw on the side, but that was pretty tasteless too. Once again, it lacked any herbs, or salt. It tasted like a little cabbage mixed in a lot of sweet mayonnaise, and that was it. The fries tasted like they had been fried in old reused oil; there was just a hint of fishiness to them. One of our friends had the bison burger, and I took a bite of it. It was as plain and salt-less as our burgers were. We did order dessert, it was something like an apple strudel, but not very impressive. Not even memorable enough to remember exactly what it was. Altogether, this place was an absolute let down. We went home and watched the Guy Fieri video again, and the burgers he ate seemed to be filled with condiments, looked nothing like ours. In my books Hackney on Harms deservers half a star and nothing more, and since these dishes are standard on all location menus, I doubt they would be much better. read more

Horrible service!! We went on Tuesday evening. We were told there was a 10 minute wait so we went to the bar. The bartender asked me what I wanted and I asked for water. He replied, "That's boring!" It was very rude. He gave me the smallest glass they have. We were called one second later to our table. (That was a quick 10 minutes) Our server did not greet us or offer to explain the menu. ( I have visited before) She was extremely slow and unkind. Halfway through our meal another server came up to us and told us our server went home for the evening. I asked if she was sick and he said "No she's just had a long day and wanted to go home." Very strange! What kind of place lets a server leave in the middle of dinner. Our new server was very slow. We ordered 2 desserts and he only brought us one spoon. We asked for another spoon and 2 forks and he only brought us 1 fork. Duh! Probably won't be back. Although my buffalo burger was tasty. Maybe it's because I didn't grow up in Chicago but I just don't get this place. It seems to be a dining tradition handed down from generation to generation, where you came as a child to bathe in the onion loaf grease and had fond memories of a Hackney burger before McDonalds came to town. I'm all about cozy dives but this place is in need of some serious TLC, starting with the mens bathroom. The food is bland, greasy and unappealing. Service is average at best. I have been here a few times and the draw to this place in my opinion is the outdoor seating area. It is in a wooded area with lots of big trees. If the weather is good, this can be a very nice place to eat. It seems like the menu has fewer items than I remember in the past. I didn't even see a section for non-alcoholic beverages or salads even though there was a salad featured on the specials board. I ended up going with a Hackney burger. For the price which was about $10, I would expect a very tasty burger, but this was not. I only ate half of it. The bun was very plain, no seasoning or toasting. Fries were ok. We also got onion rings which were also ok. About the onion rings, be careful when you eat these because they are very greasy and will soak into anything they touch including clothes. The service was friendly. The speed of getting food was leisurely. Overall I get the impression that they are skimping in areas to try to make more money, but that is never a good idea with a restaurant business because if the overall product and experience is not good, people won't come back. read more

Grew up going to the now closed Hackney's on Milwaukee, and then Harms as a young adult. Left Chicago 20 years ago but flew in last night with my son to visit colleges and decided to try the patio on a 43 degree night. It did not disappoint. The igloos were booked but they brought us two propane heaters that kept us warm. The onion loaf was better than I remember (less greasy) and the Hackneyburger on rye was spot on. Service was exceptional with a great recommendation on a local IPA. Hopefully the son decides on the local school to give me opportunities to come back over the next few years! read more

The one star reviews are absolutely accurate. We spent our hard earned money at Hackneys on Harms last night for a family reunion. It was awful. Six people, including two teenagers, and no one liked anything we had. Their Famous Onion Loaf was a greasy, slimy-tasting brick - fried in a fryer basket with an unseasoned batter. Burgers were tasteless, small, and all the breads and buns were grocery store quality. French fries were soggy and flavorless. Reuben was like a dorm cafeteria sandwich; skimpy and uninteresting. Mac and cheese was inedible; dried out, and resembled dollar store Mac n Cheese in the box. Even the grilled cheese (one family member's THIRD meal he ordered trying to find something good) wasn't very good. Dessert was equally disappointing. Hackneys World Famous Apple Strudel looked and tasted like it came right out of a cheap grocery store package. Ridiculous. Ambiance was NOT special. It's an old, not so clean, building on an old lot. Prices are ridiculous for what they serve; easily double or triple what they should be charging. What is worse, I called before we came, explained to the manager we were concerned about the bad reviews, and she said they were from disgruntled out of towners who were disappointed because "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" misrepresented them. I have long been a fan of the Hackney's enterprise. Every location has it's charm, but Hackney's on Harms is by far my favorite, especially in the summertime. The famous onion loaf is unbelievable and a must have at every visit. But don't over do it, you will not be happy later... The burgers here are awesome, but I most often order the marble rye rueben. One of the best I've had. The best part about this particular Hackney's location is the outdoor seating in the summer. Set in a forest-like atmosphere, you sit among the tall trees lit with twinkling lights and toss back a spicy bloody mary made at the outdoor cabana bar. The unique ambiance of the patio makes me long for warm weather again. Inside the restaurant is small and cozy, but makes that wait on the weekends unbearable. If you have never visited, wait until summer and sit outside, you won't regret it! read more

We love this place and usually plan a bike trip around stopping for late lunch / early dinner. We have been coming here for years, my wife as a child. I only recently began to review on yelp so I never have been able to rate a past visit. It's always been pretty good except for yesterday. I hope management reads this because I think there is an issue. We ordered the onion loaf which is always good, I ordered the patty melt and the waitress asked what type of cheese and bun. I said regular rye bread, she said it only comes on dark.....What?....Patty Melt? Don't even put it on the menu (OK first time patty melt from here, usually Hackney burger) It's like I was ordering a Hackney burger but with grilled onions. My wife ordered the Hackney burger on dark rye. Virtually the same sandwich, mine with grilled onions. Service, My order came out first, when the waitress came to the table she paused for a second and said, "I'll have to see what happened to to the other order", and literally, never saw her again. I covered my food with a napkin to keep it warm because I'm not rude and eat in front of others. Wait staff should never brought it out until orders were complete. Waitress never came back, the bartender noticed my empty glass and a disgusted look so took a beverage order. Then a 3rd person brought my wife's order. After dinner, waited a while, then a 4th person brought our bill and took for ever to return to pick it up. This visit gets 1 STAR, Previous visits get 4.5 (If I could give 1/2 points) I hope we have better luck next visit, don't want to give it up just yet. read more

I've eatten at this location several times, yet I prefer the location on Lake. The food is exactly the same --- to die for, yet when I go to this location I feel like I'm eatting in a bar. I know this is the original location and has been around since the 1920's. In the summer it's a great place to go because you can eat outside in the garden. I love been near the woods too. Hackney's is one of those places that if grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago that you went to frequently. The food is incredible along with the service. There's nothing like a Hackneyburger on dark rye. My mouth starts watering just thinking about this place. Ohhhhh and then their onion ring loaf -- Totally to die for.
