I love this place, but their carryout was a total mess. The burgers were cooked like hockeypucks and there was no lettuce, tomato or onion in any of our containers. The box for the onion loaf was too small and it was put wide open at the top in our bag. By the time we got home they were barely warm. $50 for 2 burgers and a loaf was a complete waste. What a fun experience! I have lived in Highland Park for decades and my other half suggested Hackneys. He is a life long Chicagoland resident and remembers going to Hackneys in the 1970s. The people who answered the phone were so patient and knowledgable and helped me place my order and when I got there for curbside pickup it was very convenient (I have never done curbside pickup). Wanted to visit an old favorite from the past. The patio seating and the warm weather was a perfect scenario for a great evening. Only one problem, none of the old memories showed up. The waitress took for ever to take our order. When we got served my burger was void of the onion l asked for. My iced tea was never refilled nor was l asked if l ever wanted a refill. The burger itself was smaller than l recalled from a few years back. The black bread on the burger wasn't the same as years past. It used to be shaped like an oval as if it were right from the oven and coarse i nature. I haven't been to a Hackney's in some time. I was really excited to have a great burger outside - we haven't eaten out since March. We were very disappointed. The quality of the meat seems to have gone down. It also is not served on the rye shaped slices with the burger in the shape of the rye bread. Get the pretzel roll if you decide to have a burger here. If you're looking for the Hackney's classic that was featured as one of the 10 best burgers in the country you will not be happy. It was also very frustrating to spend $60 on 2 not great burgers and 2 beers ($10 tip because it's not the server's fault the food was bad). Last night it was 80° and perfect picnic weather. We were going to a restaurant early to get to a 6:30 meeting so thought about eating on some establishment's patio. Do you know how hard it is to find a place during rush hour where you aren't ingesting fumes with your fume blanc? We ate inside. Today, 80° again and we found a gasless location. Visiting home last month and drove to Glenview to meet up with my aunt and a cousin for lunch. They recommended Hackney's which I had not had since I was a kid. It was a perfect day and their huge patio was really nice. Atmosphere for me is 70% of why I go to restaurants and the atmosphere on this day was excellent. I had their Hackney's burger and we all shared a half "loaf?" of their onion concoction. It was great. I don't know how people eat much more than a spoonful of that though since it is so greasy. Actually, yes I do. When I was about ten my parents took me here and I ate half a loaf by myself. Let me just say that was poor judgement and fortunately those memories faded a bit and I was able to enjoy myself this round. Great visit, great patio, good food, great lunch. read more

I've been coming to Hackney's on Harms since the late summer of 1997 - when I first moved to Chicago. It is, therefore, accurate to summer I like the place - though (sorry) only in the summer months - cos' the garden dining area is what (in my lil opinion) Hackneys is all about. A large open dining patio - curls around a shack-of-a-bar/counter/serving space - where the wait-staff rush like fireants (they work 'em very hard) between the kitchen and the tables with huge plates of (their famous) full stacks of fried onion loafs (for lack of their proper name?) ... The beer isn't always cold. The owner can be as grumpy as all heck as she fusses and finesses seating arrangements ... but the place has a certain charm I really do enjoy. The silver birch trees are dotted around the seating area and add a major pinch of rustic to the eating experience. It's all good. read more

The "meat" in my Reuben was like microwave reheated rubber. Fries were cold. Draft beer flat. Neve got a chance to say anything to waitress as never came back. Love this place, and not just because it looks old and warm. The atmosphere and hospitality are awesome, and the food is actually surprisingly good for "bar food." They source local ingredients, like pasture-raised chicken from the farm across the street- can't get more local than that! Be careful though, not everything on the menu is fresh. Definitely some frozen and packaged food. 4 stars for making moves to support local farmers and sustainable farming. Would reduce to a 3.5 for the non-fresh items, like the French fries. We sat at the bar and we're constantly engaged by the staff and regulars (and there were many). Very welcoming place that would easily become my local watering hole if I lived closer. Burgers I've had are inside out, blue cheese and buffalo all top notch, the onion rings are ridiculous the fry's are very good and seasonal key lime pie leaves others in the dust... Makes your mouth pucker. I've tried other things such as brisket, and beef dip... those are lacking flavor and would be huge in a nursing home. Suburbia's favorite burger gets a solid 1.5 stars The place does have a lovely outdoor patio, which on a nice summer night is great. However, that's where the positive things ended: -The food was bland and mediocre -Half of the dinners were incorrect -One meal came out a full 15 minutes after the rest -None of the burgers came with the onions the server carefully asked up about when taking orders. She brought out a plate of very unappealing brown cooked onions that, hypothetically, been grilled. Sadly even those soggy things couldn't add taste to the burger. -We "interacted" with two servers, both of whom were disinterested and slapped food on the table without a word. Our actual server didn't register a single emotion the entire time. Also, think back to the last time you visited a park by a lake/beach. Imagine the bathroom: Vaguely clean, the floor is damp in random areas, looks a bit dark and dingy. That's the bathroom connected to the patio at Hackney's. Ew. read more

About a 2-2.5: Some friends and I came to check out Hackney's for lunch, as we had heard that they were rated as one of the top burger places in the US. This restaurant has been around since 1939, the Harms location being their original. I tried the Famous Hackneyburger, which was served on a Dark Rye (or, you can opt for a bun) - you can choose between an 8 oz or a 4oz, which I chose the 8 oz-er. I found the meat to be on the bland side, and I wasn't a fan of the rye that they used (even though I am a huge fan of rye breads), as it was very chewy and 'goopy.' I did ask for extra ketchup, but the condiment didn't really help much. The burger automatically comes with cheese, so if you're lactose intolerant, you can substitute or opt out of that. The side of shoestring french fries were forgettable, and the service was a little MIA. You can tell how the restaurant itself is pretty old-school and filled with history. Always liked Hackney's. Been going here since I was a child. It is a real piece of North Shore nostalgia. The food has always been decent, but not great. But I have to say the burgers have gotten expensive ($12.50 for a fried burger with cheese). As of late, the food is also suffering from middle age, or maybe it is old age? We visited here on July 3rd and sat at the lovely outside garden for a meal for lunch. We both left disappointed. My burger was ordered medium. It came well done and had little taste. The serving of fries was skimpy. The burger came on Hackney's classic dark rye, which in this case, was falling apart. Hackney's makes a big deal of its rye but it is best avoided. I am beginning to wonder whether it might be good idea to just avoid Hackney's altogether. My spouse ordered a spinach salad with grilled chicken and a lemonade ice tea. What came was not a spinach salad, but a salad with old, tasteless iceberg lettuce. The salad ($12.95) contained the bitter core yellow leaves that should be discarded. The tomatoes were mushy and the chicken rubbery and tasteless. My spouse had to remind the waiter to bring her two pieces of Hackney dark rye bread. (The salad comes with a gross looking muffin. The waiter forgot to make the substitution. He also forgot to bring my wife's lemonade-ice tea.) When the bill came, we saw we had been charged $1.25 for two pieces of bread. I must note that the bread here is really more like carmel colored rye bread, soft and not much fiber. It has always been a weak spot and is long overdue for an upgrade. Instead, the restaurant is now charging for two slices of whimpy bread when you order a $13 salad? Geez times must be tough. I complained, but the waiter was unsympathetic. It's true I am a sucker for the place.I have a nostalgic tie to Hackney's. But the food is pricey and the service can be spotty. There are definitely better places to get a hamburger, but Hackney's doesn't seem to have woken up to this fact. Total check for two people - one order with no beverage and the other order with one draft beer: $40. I have to say this was a rather expensive lunch. When I told the waiter that we didn't think we'd be back to the Harms location, he replied, "ok good to hear it." I am not sure he was listening. I love Hackney's on Harms. I love the outdoor terrace in the summer, right behind the owners house. The huge old trees above you. In winter, I love the combination old barge/old 1960's rec room feel of the indoor bar & restaurant, which always seems full of locals, none of them hip, pretentious, holier-than-thou urbane types. A Pretty geriatric crowd, in fact, most of the time. And it's great fun eavesdropping on their conversations. Anyway, a trip out to Glenview ends up being a refreshing day trip from city to a place that is not so far away but it feels like Wisconsin. Just a nice cheap and quick change of scenery. I also love their burgers because they are tender, and taste so fresh you would think they just ground up the cow out back. Of course the onion loaf makes the trip worthwhile in itself. Two people can easily share the half order. Because I don't go there frequently, I haven't had many other menu items other than the burgers and sandwiches. Service is always dependable and the staff always knowledgeable and friendly. Hackney's on Harms also makes a good stop in summer if you take the bike path north from Caldwell Woods at Devon And Peterson. You can do a healthy ride up to the Chicago Botanic Gardens, and get off the path on your way home to stop at Hackney's. A 40 mile round-trip bike ride takes away the guilt of that brick of fried onions you're about to consume! (And you may need to make another stop for Mylanta if you didn't take your little purple pill beforehand.:-) read more

Lots of fond memories of the Hackney burger. I haven't paid a visit in far too long. My yearly drive to the Northshore for the 1st day of spring, left me craving a good burger... and of course their loaf of onion rings. Even a 1/4 loaf is massive. The bison burger may be a bit pricey, but was enjoyable. Server Scott was on point and I only wish it was a bit warmer for a meal on the patio. Lots of history in this 1939 original location. I am sad to write this review of this old family favorite, but it must be done so that others don't walk away feeling so let down. Just remember Hackney's from your childhood and let it go at that. 1. Waitstaff was horrible. Unable to deliver any item in a timely way, from water to iced tea to the food. Everything was asked for time and again and still there were long periods of time without anything being supplied. They were however very busy setting up the tables for the dinner crowd because apparently that is more important than the people actually sitting there trying to order a lunch. 2. The food delivered to our table was wrong and the check and change was totally wrong. We had to flag down our waitress to get the right food and then let her know she gave us back almost more money than we gave her to pay the bill. She was very confused and befuddled the entire time. If we were people without ethics we could have walked away and paid just a couple of dollars for our lunch. 3. But worst of all was the food. Now I know Hackney's was the place to go to get a good old fashioned burger on dark rye and they could always be counted on for the brick of onion rings. There was nothing better anywhere, but times they are a changin' and I want a bit more variety in my food these days. So tell me how this restaurant can screw up a grilled chicken breast salad? Seriously! It was the most boring, unimaginative, uninspired salad I've ever had and at $11.00 it was insulting. So I'm officially writing all the Hackney's restaurants off my list of stand bys. Two words: terrible experience. Everyone's raving about how good Hackney's is, so I had high expectations for this place. First of all, the location. It's hidden behind trees. You WILL pass it up if you're not careful. Another thing was parking. No spots. Anywhere. I don't know if I just came at a busy time or what but it was awhile before someone pulled out. Moving on to the actual restaurant, you have 2 choices. Eat outside or eat inside. My family and I chose to eat inside. The seating was very stuffy and cramped. I reached under the table to move it and my hands were greeted by a sticky residue. I went to the bathroom to wash my hands and what an experience that was. I opened the bathroom door to find piss and water all over the floor. I wasn't even really phased. I gave up on Hackney's back outside in the parking lot. I looked at the ceiling and saw pipes with spiderwebs jutting from the walls. The bathroom literally felt like a supply closet. When I eventually washed my hands, there was no means to dry them. The paper towel dispenser was either empty or broken and the hand dryer WAS broken. Please, at least clean the bathroom periodically. Our waitress was friendly, but she was never there when you really needed her. When we got our food there was quite a mix up with the order, none to big though. Family brushed it off. When I got my burger, I was literally staring at it, contemplating suicide. It was just meat in between two slices of bread. Supposedly you're suppose to tell them that you want lettuce/tomatoes. Good thing our waitress didn't inform us. Pretty sure anywhere else, it's normal for the lettuce and tomato to come with the burger already. The burger itself wasn't bad, but it wasn't outstanding. I got the InsideOut Burger. Their keylime pie on the other hand was actually tasty. A lot of people are probably going to disagree with me about Hackney's. I've really tried to enjoy Hackney's on Harms but it's not what it use to be. The waitstaff is lovely but the food is just okay. Had the onion ring loaf-usually a favorite -today not crispy enough and lacks flavor. Instead of a burger I opted for the French dip and it was not good. The beef tasted like En-Cor and the fries were greasy and undercooked. The chairs are cheap white plastic. Thankful that the weather was gorgeous. I think Hackney's evokes nostalgia in people who grew up coming here. If I were one of those people I would probably give it 4 stars, but I am not, so I'm giving it 3 stars. As another reviewer mentioned, it is a secluded location. There is a house on the property and the actual restaurant part that you eat in was the chicken coop back in the day (or that is what I've been told). The presentation of the onion brick is more interesting than how it tastes. It really is a brick of fried, shoe string onion rings. The appeal of the Hackney burger, for me, is that it comes on rye bread. I went with the 4 oz. burger and it was the perfect size. I ordered it medium but I think it was cooked just a bit under medium, which is still fine with me. Washed down with a Stella, my Hackney's meal hit the spot. read more
