Food was just ok, but service was good. Everyone raves about the Hackney Burger, but I was not impressed.

This is the original of all the Hackney restasurants located in Glenview, Il. I have been to Hackney's on Harms, several times before over the past 20+ years. It's a perfect old school spot. Just enough class and grunge. In the summer they open the outside space. But it was 24 degrees so I stopped in for lunch just this week. I started with the Creme of Tomato soup. I love soups and this did not disappoint. A cup of God-given goodness. I also ordered the 1/4 onion loaf that they are known for. For me, a 1/4 order was too much for one person. I found the loaf a little disappointing. Not enough crisp for me. A little soggy and needed lots of salt. For the Grand Finale, I ordered the Hackney burger. They are famous for this and I can see why. I ordered mine medium rare, with cheddar and crispy bacon on rye bread. It was over the top awesome. Plenty of color, juicy, the bacon crispy, and seasoned to perfection. I put mustard on that action. Get this burger. The bartender was super nice and polite. I forget her name but 5 stars for her. She made me a nice bloody with a pickle in it. I will certainly be here again the next time I hit Glenview, Il. read more

Traveled out there because of their outdoor private globes--which were amazing. They were still decorated with lights for the holidays, have cute pillows & blankets, and they're super warm. They even have little service windows that open for food to be delivered so they've really thought of everything here. Ambiance definitely 4.5 stars and exactly what we were looking for. But it kinda stops there. Partner and I both got the famous hackney burger and we're confused why it's famous. Just a run of the mill, unimpressive burger. Maybe we erred by getting it on a bun as opposed to rye bread? No real flavor to speak of or anything that made it stand out. It's served on a sad little plate with a separate plate of fries to share. Just not what we expected for a signature dish. Started with potato skins which were "fine" but nothing special and could have used more cheese. Food is 2 stars. Would definitely not be back in warmer weather--might come back in winter but only for the dome option since other places don't have them so much anymore. And this time I'd probably just keep it safe and get a grilled cheese. read more

Best outdoor patio around and best place to dine outdoors since the pandemic. They have been so accommodating with outdoor tables, great heaters, blankets, and many enclosed igloo pods (even the food comes out to your table from insulated warming carts that keep the food hot). Seems they will keep their outdoor service open and going way past when other restaurants have wimped out and closed all their outdoor patios. Food is always good, dining out in woods always so special. Thank you Hackneys for seeing us through these difficult times. read more

When to Hackey's on Harms with my wife we got there about 830 pm. The food was just okay the service was terrible. We were the only people sitting inside. If the waitress wanted to make sure to lose a customer she did a great job. read more

Love the fries (well done), crispy onion burgers were great! Although, it'd be nice if the pretzel buns were toasted or warmed since there's an up charge for it (instead of just putting a burger on a bun). Service was great, kudos to Grace! read more

We did not start with alcoholic beverages so that may have set off the whole meal. Food was nothing special. Definitely not the menu that was posted online. The onion rings were cold when served. We were offered a tiny plate of fries "for the table" where a large platter was usually served. Water was not refilled. Very disappointing. Although there was a Bears game that afternoon and a huge rain storm, the restaurant was not very busy. I really wanted to love this place again but we won't be back. read more

I love the rubber bubble structures they have here for diners! They are a safe, socially distanced way to enjoy a special meal. What's more, the fried onion brick, grilled cheese, and "leprechaun" ice cream pie are all spectacular. This restaurant has served my family well for three generations, and I will always be back. read more

Comfy, relaxed, traditional Hackney's menu with great outdoor seating and igloo's for rainy or cold days. On warmer days the kids playhouse next to the dining garden is similar to ikea's. Good for groups and families. Fav entrees are the Hackneyburger, the brick of onion rings, the corned beef and the fish fry. Spinach and strawberry salad is also delish. read more

This isn't your grandparent's Hackneys. I'm not really sure where it lost it's charm? It's just not the sum of all parts. They have fresh beef cooked to a medium rare; they will gladly place plate after plate of freshly fried fries in front of you. The cole slaw is delicious. This just doesn't stand out or make it destination worthy. I've been talking a trip down nostalgia lane recently and wanted their onion loaf. However, I couldn't convince anyone to accompany me, including those who grew up with Hackney's. I ended up going by myself and just ordered the onion loaf. I went elsewhere for the rest of lunch. I left satisfied. It was almost like a mutually agreed upon goodbye when I left. read more

Visited this place for the first time with a friend who lives in the area. He said that they have good burgers and he definitely wasn't wrong about that. Ordered the half pound Hackney burger and it was great. I ordered it medium and it did seem like the burger wasn't consistently cooked. Some parts were a little more cooked than other parts which was weird but didn't really bother me. The fries are bottomless but nothing special. Just standard plate of fries. I will definitely be back because I want to try the Onion Loaf they have. I do think that prices might be a tad high compared to places that serve similar items. They also could give bigger glasses for water as well. Overall, a nice little place with a great atmosphere. Kind of has a "country club restaurant" look and feel. read more

Three cheers for igloos and great staff! We can here on a balmy 7 degree night and it was cozy! I did wear my light snow pants but was too hot with a jacket on, and those in our party without them were fine. Easy to order and pass food through window and as usual everything was great. We thought it was SO cheery and cute. Thank you for all of your hospitality and enthusiasm and quick service despite the cold and safety measures! What a total waste of time. The website says indoor dining and no reservations accepted. We drove 45 minutes to come and celebrate a birthday, only to find that they have a dozen unheated igloos which you need to make a reservation for. Basing this review mostly in my girlfriends food during a recent visit. She (omnivore) ordered a Hackney burger. It arrived naked except a yellowed piece of iceberg lettuce. She said it was bad overall. I'm a vegan and had... well basically nothing. They have a meatless burger (Impossible?) and a black bean burger, but two servers couldn't tell us if burgers, buns or toppings were vegan. Or how it was cooked (with other meat?). I forgot about this place after a long hiatus from covid but just as good as I remember. The staff made this transition so delightful for my family. We sat in an igloo on New Year's Eve and it was absolutely amazing. The lights and holiday decorations were absolutely beautiful. The igloo itself was incredibly warm, it was about 20 degrees outside but we all took off our coats because of the heaters. The food was hot delicious as always. Custom orders are never an issue. The servers were so friendly and we appreciated the minimal contact that kept my family and your staff safe. read more

We reserved one of the little igloo bubbles outside (since it's still so cold in Chicago-it was 32° that night)....we were toasty warm inside with the 2 little heaters and lap blankets! A shadow of its former self. Patio was full by 5:00 with a 20-minute wait so we sat inside in the musty dining room. There were only three tables full, but service was slow. Food utterly mediocre. The French dip used to be delicious but now it is served on day-old bread. It feels as if the whole place is just trading on its past glory. We are so sad but we won't be back. read more

I absolutely love Hackney's On Harms! I only come here a couple times a year (I don't live in the area), but when I do it's always a treat. I like to sit in the bar area which is very old school. I don't know why, but when I'm here, I feel like I'm at Columbia Inn from the movie "White Christmas." I love the way the restaurant is set back from the road in a wooded area. Now to the food. I always get one of their burgers which, in my opinion, can't be beat! I usually end up with the Bleu Cheese burger on dark rye and, of course, a brick of onion rings. Delicious! Hackney's is one of those places that has been around so long, that your memories have memories of it. Started in 1939 and family-owned, it has remained a family business throughout its long history on the North Shore. Its wooded location just adjacent to the Forest Preserve gives you the sensation that you are eating dinner at your grandfather's country club, fresh from a round of golf...but with better beer and no golf. The original location has a small, traditional menu centered around the famous Hackneyburger. The best bread to eat it on is the rye. Lettuce and tomato come on the side, on a separate plate, and if your stomach is up to it, the grilled onions make the perfect topper. What I think is great is that now you can also get a turkey burger or buffalo burger, and the chicken is organic and free-range. It is the perfect blend of old-world and new-world sensibilities. The best place to sit is outside on a warm night. You have to put your name on a list, which can result in a long wait at this popular location. But there is a nice seating area where you can have a beer or cocktail and there is an old playhouse for the kiddies, so it's not that bad. Of course, you can't go to Hackney's without trying their famous brick of fried onions. Once you emerge from this mound of tasty goodness, with onions dribbling from your chin and the telltale shiny face, you will have been inducted into the Hackney's register of happy customers. My family began going to Hackneys about 60 years ago. I'm in Chicagoland for an extended summer but since moving to Florida 14 years ago at least one visit each year. Now twice in two weeks. The onion loaf is unique. Generous pours on drinks with reasonable pricing. Burgers on dark rye are great. Last night despite capacity seating outside the service was excellent. Molly B was terrific. Eh, is it weird that I find this Hackney's to be not as good as their others? The service is pretty nonexistent. One evening my friend and I went for a late dinner and we weren't sure where to go to be seated outside. There was no one at the host station inside and when we dined al fresco service was a bit strange also. They were there but really seemed like they had better things to do. The food similarly also seemed blander here too. The inside out burger had almost no bacon or cheese in it. The onion roll was also just super bland and greasy with just no onion flavor to it. My family has been going to Hackney's for many years. Used to go to Lake Zurich but it closed. Now usually the one on Lake. Two weeks ago my son and I stopped at the one on Harms. They have a large delightful patio. We sat there and had a wonderful dinner. We had Fish and Chips and a quarter loaf of onion rings. It was a gorgeous evening. Food delicious. Great burgers served up nicely in a graciously aging dining room. Servers are friendly, the food is delicious. But focus on the burger...two sizes, 8 and 4 ounce, served on a variety of breads and buns. The fries are great too. Crispy on the outside and nicely salted. If you have a bigger appetite or dining on a group, opt for the onion loaf. Nice bar with some TV'S to watch the game or the news. read more

Hackney's is an experience. It's a cherished establishment that only locals that grew up with it truly understand. It's not fancy and by no means the best, but for some reason, it's got a charm to it for which I have a strong craving once in a while. Think Caddyshack clubhouse that hasn't been updated since '81 - kind of musty but weirdly nostalgic. If you're gonna get the most out of your experience, you're going to have to get the onion loaf. It's really quite good. It's less "onion rings" and more "french fried onion strings." It's unbelievably greasy but such a treat...and it. is. HUGE! 1/4 loaf is enough for 2 as an app. Hackney's has a lot of really decent options. Anything with their homemade dark rye is fantastic. The burgers are good, but my go-to is the patty melt with cheddar or American cheese. It's flavorful like the burger but the rye is crisped up nicely, which is the right complement to the patty. Last time we went, my mom got a grilled chicken sandwich. It's nothing groundbreaking but they use Harrison's chicken, an undisputed delicacy in our family, which made it really high quality and fresh. Usually a really good local draft beer selection although I personally always get a pint of Guinness - creature of habit. read more
