This place was a recommendation from a fellow yelper and it does really show off some of the more charming aspects of Dutch food culture. Otherwise Dutch food can be a pretty depressing chapter (not saying that all of it is but the average quality is considerably lower than in many other countries) but I do like the pot of meatballs, bacon and potatoes, hearty filling food and this place really appear to do it well - my Dutch colleagues were also impressed and said that it was really great (they did however feel it was weird to eat it at a restaurant as it is typical food eaten at home) Good service and friendly atmosphere further lifts this place and I will most likely visit again. Prices are also pretty decent so while not cheap it is not pricey and one dish will be enough to fill up. read more

The place is "Brown" as they seems to say in Amsterdam, which means cozy. It's also super tasty, from start to finish the experience in many ways anchors my memory of Amsterdam. Traditional Dutch food served in a beautiful setting! I had the cod with mustard sauce and it was excellent. My friends had the 'catch of the day', which was Halibut and they raved about it. I have heard that their traditional pea soup is very good, but the soup of the day was Broccoli Bleu Cheese. It was phenomenal. Bottom line: if it says, '...of the day' order it! I discovered Haesje Claes through the page of Iamsterdam and decided to get there because we wanted to try original dutch food. When we arrived at the restaurant, the waiter asked me "Where are you from?" in order to give the menu in my language, I told him that I am from Colombia and the next thing he said was "Oh no, we don't sell white powders here". I know dumb people usually find this kind of jokes very funny but I don't, I just wanted to leave that place because I felt totally offended. I can't believe that was happening to me in one of the most traditional restaurants in Amsterdam. I decided to stay there because I was very hungry and that was my last day in Amsterdam and we really really wanted to try dutch food before leaving the city. We came here after reading Yelp reviews, thinking this would be a good place for authentic Dutch food. We were seated in a nice window spot...and then promptly forgotten for the rest of the night. It's not like the staff were swamped, either. Several of them were just standing around chatting with each other. They not only glanced in our direction several times, but they also had to come within 2 feel of us to retrieve utensils for other tables. After a long time of no water, no "how are you doing," no order-taking, I started putting my jacket back on to leave. That's when someone finally came over to take our orders. The food was nothing special. I feel like I could have gotten the same at a different place, with better service. When it came time to pay the check, we had to get up and bring it to the register, and even then the guy there (who was standing there doing nothing) wouldn't ring up the bill, saying that we had to wait for the waitress who served us. The only thing that made this worth 2 stars instead of one was that our waitress gave decent directions to the nearest pharmacy. read more

Serves traditional Dutch food in a Dutch setting. By American standards the food is only OK. I had the beef stew. It was aight, but I suspect the mashed potatoes had been microwaved because after a couple of bites they were still way too hot in the middle, practicality burned my mouth. If you're gonna eat one Dutch meal in Amsterdam I suppose it might as well be here. Ownership seems to go to great lengths to make sure they keep popping up in every tourist magazine and publication, it's pretty clear tourists are their bread and butter and bacon. Moderer's was too far so we ended up here. So glad we did! Note that we are not traditional Dutch food connoisseurs so this review is just coming from an American touristy couple. I think what was the best about this place was the service, our waiter was SO nice and patient and explained everything to us. The host was nice, the busboy was nice, the bartender lady was nice. The only thing not nice were the creepy dolls outside of the bathroom upstairs. The food was good, we got the classic Stamppot and boy, was it filling. Mounds and mounds of mashed potatoes with carrots with bacon, sausage, meat patty - it was literally enough to feed two people but stupidly and fortunately, I ordered the fish of the day which was so good with its honey mustard sauce! I know that since it's the fish of the day, you probably won't be able to get it but it was executed well which leads me to believe that their "dishes of the day" are probably delicious too. I can't compare it to the other traditional dutch places around Amsterdam but we left this place pretty happily. Oh also the nice waiter gave us little Holland flags to take home as souvenirs after i asked for them! I asked for one and he gave me seven. Enjoy! read more

Great traditional Dutch gluten-free options! I wanted to try traditional Dutch food so I got the split pea soup (came with a gluten-free roll served with a sealed individual packet of butter) and the traditional stamppot and loved it! Both were on the gluten-low menu but they were very conscious and careful to keep me (celiac) from gluten! I wanted to try my son's meal that was also on the gfree menu and the server told me not to bc he hadn't entered it as gluten-free so it possibly could have a different sauce or the same sauce different container. And a different server delivered fries for the kids and I asked if they were fine for me and he told me probably but if I was sensitive maybe skip it. I asked if they were from a dedicated fryer and he told me absolutely but they change the oil two days and just in case something fell in and it wasn't today that they changed it I should make the decision myself based on my own sensitivity. Very detailed response! I was thankful for that and skipped the fries just in case. No adverse (gluten) reactions for me to my delicious dinner and I appreciated the thoughtful answers to my offhand, can I try it? questions of two different servers. My family is not gluten-free and also enjoyed their classic Dutch comfort food in this restaurant with a wonderful relaxed, casual, comfortable atmosphere with superior service! We came here after reading in our Time Out guide that this was a good place for authentic Dutch food. We'd gotten quick bites (mmm... bitterballen) from cafes around the city, but this was our first full Dutch meal. We went in with high hopes, and the food wasn't bad, it was just surprisingly bland. We split the cheese plate, which was very good (cheese in general in Amsterdam did not disappoint), but our entrees (hotchpotch and sauerkraut stamppot) were hearty but surprisingly tasteless. To a certain degree we found this to be the case with a lot of the Dutch dishes we tried on our trip, but I was really expecting, at the very least, some of that characteristic sauerkraut zing, but they seemed to have overwashed the taste right out. Still, the staff was relatively friendly, service was quick, prices were reasonable, and serving sizes were pretty large. read more

Great, authentic Dutch food in a traditionally-decorated restaurant. Unfortunately, vegetarian options were poor, and service can be a little spotty (being the Netherlands), but they accept card. The atmosphere was great for Christmas dinner. The food itself was the highlight -- most of us had fish dishes but the duck was also good. Starter was fabulous -had the Platter with various smoked fish. Could have been we were hungry and had been wandering around looking for a restaurant but it was good. Even the kids dug in and ate. Crab soup- wow Devine!!!!! Had to wait a very long time for a table. It was busy so people families have been going here for a long time and it's good. The building Looks like it use to be part of something else maybe a church at one time??? Service was iffy. Little standoffish and they wanted us out as it was getting very late and we ended up being the last people there. We had ordered dessert too which I don't think they were expecting. The kids loved the ice cream with the small plastic treat toy stuck in it. I'm pretty sure when I was sitting there in one of the rooms I saw a mouse dart across so I'm a little uneasy but the place is very old. Never told anyone or anyone in my party. It's hard for me to say whether or not the food at Haesje Claes is authentic since it's the only place I've tried Dutch cuisine; however, I can say that it was pretty delicious! We started off with delicious complimentary bread and butter. For lunch I had a plate with vegetable croquettes. My boyfriend had the stamppot, a Dutch specialty consisting of mashed potatoes with different veggies mixed in (in his case, sauerkraut). Both dishes were good; the stamppot was particularly delicious. Aside from the food quality, the location of the restaurant is excellent and central. The restaurant is very friendly to many nationalities; they have waitresses who speak many different languages and menus in many languages as well. They have several different beers, both on tap and in the bottle, and most of them are Dutch brews. I would definitely recommend this restaurant as a place for tourists to experience Dutch cuisine. read more

When we asked the locals what a good place to eat was, they assumed we wanted chinese food and recommended some of that to us. -_- You think I traveled across the world to this town for chinese food? uh..NO. So without any help, we found ourselves to a suggestion and fairly highly reviewed spot serving some of the more authentic Dutch cuisine. In comes Haesje Claes, a classic looking establishment with fine antiquity which was conveniently located near the train station and our hostel at the Flying Pig. We started off with a serving of oysters (little did we know, they meant raw oysters on the half shell) which were just ok. The ones in the US are better. We then continued with a plate of cubed cheese after hearing that the Dutch have excellent cheese, and you know what? They absolutely do. It was so creamy and aged perfectly full with flavor, I couldn't believe it. It was almost like a creamier gouda type cheese to me. And for our entree, all four of us went for a stamp pot with bacon, meatball, and sausages over a patch of mashed carrots and potatoes. The smell was tantalizing. At first sight, it looked like a feast for kings and then after 2 seconds of staring at the mound placed in front of me, I attacked. And then I was beat to the ground after finishing only half of it. Surrender. The stamp pot was excellent. Definitely tasted like an authentic meal and the atmosphere was very cozy and comfortable. With the rain coming down outside and the warmth and dim lighting in here, the experience was great. Warming up to a nice meal of mashed potatoes and carrots with sausage and sauerkraut set the tone for a pleasant night's sleep. read more

This was plain and simply a good meal. Not a lot of pomp and circumstance (which you might've noticed I despise), just Dutch food served with a smile. I recommend this place if you need a break, a break from bustling A'dam, from fatty foods and from restaurants that seem to serve the waiter rather than the food. You don't get health-food, you don't get steaks imported from the Himalayas served on the thigh of a virgin (born on a full-moon, and all that). You get food your gran would make (had she been Dutch), food that fills your belly and if you are tired of your numerous co-tourists, try to get the wee room at the bottom of the stairs. There are only three tables and it's a lot more quiet. I had poetatoemash with beef and a sausage. The course looked a bit small, but I was certainly full after - and for hours. The point of this place - I suppose - is that they've made every course on the menu scores of times, they know what they are doing. Be ware of other tourists, though, at 7 pm the place is packed. This. Food. Is. FANTASTIC! OMG, yummmmmm. After dining here, I realized I have a true affinity for Dutch food! The service was great and the food was phenomenal. Their gluten free menu is very vast, which is awesome, and the options still allow for one to get a true Dutch culinary experience. Additionally, the staff was very diligent about making sure gluten free diners are served the correct food and do not get accidentally glutened. I felt totally safe eating here. The smoked mackerel salad was great and the stamppot with a beef meatball was just absolutely amazing as was the chicken breast with port sauce. I'm typically very skittish about ordering chicken from restaurants, particularly the breast, bc it tends to be dry and flavorless, but that was NOT the case here. It was the exact opposite. I also want to tip my hat to the outrageously fantastic & drool worthy brown gravy that comes with the mashed potatoes. My husband is not a gravy person and even he thought it was really good. I can't emphasize how great the food & experience is at Haesje Claes! I'm definitely looking forward to visiting again during my next trip to Amsterdam!! read more

First time at the place. When in Amsterdam we tend to revisit our favorites but decided to try a new place. It was the usual space with of lots of decorative old Dutch clutter which makes it feel old and charming. The service was great, the menu is ample. I had a fish casserole and it was pretty tasty partner went for a pork tenderloin which he liked. A starter salad was plenty to split, my only comment is that the cheese tends to overwhelm the greens, the bread some sort of dark, a bit lighter than a standard rye and served with good butter. Bar tended toward beer but my white wine was just fine. The bar appears to be limited since my request for a simple martini was beyond their reach- however straight Dutch gin was on offer. Would have liked to try dessert but we were both more than stuffed. A useful thing about this place was that it's not too noisy so perfect for parties where you actually want to talk. The beef and hutsepot were both excellent, tasting rich but fresh, and even the mayonnaise that went with the side of fries (yes, we *are* in The Netherlands) was clearly home-made. Wandering around our hotel without a plan, but kind of liking the idea of finding a spot with old school Dutch food. Enter Haesje Claes, which is the Westlake Joe's of the Dutch food scene. Super old looking in a fantastic way (but sadly only open since the 70s) with rambling rooms that stretch on across the block as the restaurant acquired more space. We were seated in the Regent Dining Room on the main floor, sadly right next to some obnoxiously loud British boors. Luckily they were nearly done when we arrived, so we only had to tolerate them for half of the time we were there - sometimes this communal seating thing is no good. In any case, we had our tasty little croquettes to start things off, and then dove straight into an amazingly pickly and salty hotchpotch/stamppot and a salty, sweet and rich beef stew with cabbage. We devoured both dishes (fighting off each others' forks throughout as we switched between the two). Interesting conclusion: I like Dutch food, and a few weeks ago, I didn't even know what Dutch food WAS. Thanks for the lesson Haesje Claes! read more

Definitely touristy. Not a bad spot for trying out local Dutch cuisine. We had a terrible waitress so I knocked off one star for that. There were others around us that sat down well after us and we already eating dessert while we were waiting for our main dish. We did the fixed menu and they were nice enough to split every dish evenly for us! Overall the food was decent quality and fairly priced. Would I return? Probably not.
