Stopped here after after a pleasurable bike ride through the old streets of Amsterdam. We came here about 6:30pm on a Monday. The place was warm, cozy and inviting and is in a very old building in downtown Amsterdam about 1 mile from the city center. We walked from the train station where we had parked. The place was not very busy, but filled up as we were there. When we left there was a line out the door. We ordered a couple of local Amsterdam beers and perused the menu. We ordered the need stew with red cabbage and potatoes, the baked salmon with potatoes and vegetables, it came with clams, fries and a house salad as well and the Hopscotch stamppot,which is carrots in mashed potatoes with meatball, bacon, sausage and gravy. All of our entrees were fabulous! We each had another round of beers and they were good too. The food was great, the service was spot on, a great selection of local beers and atmosphere. Haesje Claes was a fantastic find! We had reservations here our first night in Amsterdam. They had a large and elaborate menu with tons of local specialties as well as a googly assortment of gluten free options (and the best gluten free bread I've ever had - a tiny little loaf hot from the oven!) The first night I had the goat cheese salad and my husband had a side salad - both really good, fresh, lots of toppings, etc. We both had the Stamppot (carrots/onions and sauerkraut respectively), which was incredible!! It was so good that we made reservations for our last night in town and returned. The second time I had a GF traditional stew - a mix of beef, potatoes, gravy and sweet cooked red cabbage. I don't remember what my husband had --- honestly I may not have taken my eyes off the stew and bread!! We tried to save room for dessert but couldn't manage. This place taste like a hybrid of Southern American food & British food. It's authentic Dutch food (which i do not know much about) but my wife and i were recommended to try this place for authentic Dutch food. We got here at 7:30pm on Monday night (without reservations) and it was slammed packed! The restaurant is 3 floors and they were fully booked. We first went thru the front door when the come in front of us were told to come thru the side door after they told the waiter they did not have reservations. A few minutes later, a different waiter asks if we had reservations (he was not very nice or friendly... Pretty rude actually). When i told him no, he said "sorry we are fully booked!". We were hangary so we weren't going to get turned down that easily so my wife went to the side door like the couple in front of us and she was greeted by this same rude waiter that turned us down a few minutes earlier at the front door. While this was going on, i was still waiting by the front door by the outdoor seating when one of the patrons from US saw what was happening. He said he had a reservation for 4 but that they only use the reservations for 2 and that we could try to use the other half of their reservations which we did!!! About 45 minutes of this back and forth, we were seated. Although our waitress was very nice, the food and the service was not worth all the trouble or the hype. We started with salted herring which was just average herring but a bit overpriced. The shrimp croquettes were also just average but very overpriced (2 for 11€). My wife had the tomato soup (pretty decent), meatball stamppot (pretty good),and apple pie (just ok). The meatball stamppot looked better than it tasted and the meatball itself tasted a bit gamey. I had the sauerkraut stamppot which was pretty good. The bacon was stale & dry, the sausage was pretty juicy & flavorful, and the meatball was also gamey. I personally didn't think this place lived up to the hype but they do seem to have a good following as we saw a tour bus dropping tourists of 30+ every 30 minutes or so. read more

I was a huge fan of this restaurant from the moment I walked in the atmosphere was rustic but classic with old wooden furniture and much to my delight traditional gluten free Dutch offerings what was incredibly hard to find in Amsterdam. The menu is translated into multiple languages including Japanese. I staff were accommodating but busy, don't expect them to stay at your table long if you are undecided. We asked some locals to point us toward a place to get authentic Dutch food and their response brought us here. We were not disappointed. The food certainly felt authentic. I had a fish platter. It was good and I'm glad I got to try a variety of items. My friend tried some sort of meat dish and she loved it. This place is surprisingly massive. I almost got lost on the way to the bathroom. There are multiple rooms. Cool decor. The service was a bit odd. They were kind of cold/unfriendly toward us when we first arrived (I think we unknowingly went through the wrong door or something). I was between giving this place a 3 or 4, but not because of the food or experience here, but more because I don't think I LOVE Dutch food. The short: this spot came recommended as a "traditional Dutch" place in Amsterdam to try out. Our hotel concierge called it Americanized Dutch. Whatever it is, it feels super authentic. The longer: we came here after a full day of walking and exploring, so we appreciated the affordable, intimate Dutch decor inside and outside of the space. The space looks like it hasn't been renovated in years, but has that old school Dutch charm. They give you warm, brown bread & butter to start. We started with the Dutch split pea soup. Our waiter was awesome... when we told him we were sharing, he automatically split the bowl into two smaller bowls for us. Still, it maintains an inviting atmosphere, intimately divided into several dining rooms. We were seated in the Red Dining Room, with dark wood paneling and a display of Delftware along the walls. Very elegant. Dinner was a chance to try several Dutch specialties. The soup course was Erwtensoep (Pea Soup with Sausage). (I've never had such good pea soup!) Made a resso but showed up half an hour late. They had no idea that we were even late because they were also half an hour behind on all of their reservations. It didn't seem very organized. I decided to go with the prix fixe (I believe it was 25 Euros). This came with an appetizer, select entrees, and a dessert. To start, I chose the salad, which came with some ham. No complaints there. We also ordered the Dutch shrimp croquette which was a regular croquette (2) on the side of a salad with some Dutch shrimps. I was under the impression that the shrimp was in the croquette, but this wasn't the case. Either way, the shrimp that was there was good. They're super tiny but packed with flavor, and a nice change from the typical shrimp I would normally eat in the state. For my main, I went for the stamppot with meatball. I liked my first few bites (maybe because I was hungry) but the more I ate it, the more it tasted like processed meat. My boyfriend compared it to the canned vienna sausage. The stamppot it came served on top of wasn't bad. It was my first experience with stamppot, so I wasn't sure what to expect. It's basically just mashed potatoes with cabbage. It wasn't horrible but I probably wouldn't order that again. Not my thing. My boyfriend had the rack of lamb with white cabbage stamppot and port sauce. The lamb was cooked perfectly and came in a huge portion. I would say this was the best dish of the night. That is, if you're not counting dessert. We finished off our meal with the vanilla ice cream with strawberry sauce and cream. I tasted some crushed stroopwafels somewhere in there, which was my favorite part. The service was mediocre at best. I think it could have been because they had too many people to take care of. The host was really nice though. He checked on us more than our waiter did. Bottom line, I was expecting great things, but got an average experience. It seems as though this restaurant is geared more towards tourists, so that might be why. They even have menus in multiple languages. If you really want to try this place, do so only if there's a short wait. Anything longer than 20 minutes here is not worth it. read more

The concierge at our hotel recommended this location and said this is an authentic "grandmas cooking" restaurant, and that's exactly what this hearty well-seasoned food tasted like. The scenery is quite antiquated, as is most of the scenery in Amsterdam, but it added to the experience of being in this amazing place. This was one of my favorite meals of my trip. Lively atmosphere and appropriately old setting for a solid Dutch meal. We started with herring and jenever, which was a great pairing to cut through the oiliness of the fish. We then moved on to the eel soup, which tastes strongly of the mustard and the smokiness of the eel--it had more of a meaty taste than fish. We split the shrimp krokketen, and then had two generous entrees: the marrow peas and the sauerkraut stamppot. These are definitely winter weather foods! Heavy, but in a comfort food way. So I was in Amsterdam with the Mister and we wanted the real Dutch food experience; so what do we do? We asked a local, and they recommended Haesje Claes for the most authentic. We walked in thinking it was a little restaurant, but then we were led a few steps down that led us to an even bigger space which stretched the restaurant out to the other side of the street giving it an extra entry/exit door located on the other side of the block. I ordered the Duck Leg over sauerkraut mashed potatoes, and the Mister ordered Meatball, bacon, and sausages topped over sauerkraut mashed potatoes with a side of homemade pate. When our food arrived, the sauerkraut was missing but then I discovered it was mixed in with mashed potatoes (which I wasn't a fan of). My duck leg seemed a bit dry too and it was a bit bland. As for the mister's entree, nothing really stood out, it was your basic,meatball, bacon, and sausage - something that you can easily get anywhere else. Most of our table opted for the prix fixe menu which included an appetizer, main, dessert and either coffee or tea. Mackerel Salad - It's rare that a salad is the standout of a meal, but I have to say, I loved this salad. The flavor of the smoked oil-rich mackerel was unique and a nice change of pace from how fish is typically prepared in the U.S. Beef Meatball with Stamppot - The meatball was fairly standard, however, it sat atop a mound of stamppot--potatoes mashed with a vegetable (in this case broccoli), which is definitely uniquely Dutch! Lemon Pie with Cream - I enjoyed the pie, however, all of the desserts included in the prix fixe menu seemed somewhat plain (apple pie, lemon pie and vanilla ice cream). As much as it pains me as an American to admit it, I do understand apple pie is traditionally Dutch, but I think some variety of options other than pie would be a more memorable finish to the meal. I got hooked by the taste of Traditional Dutch Food and insisted we have another Stammpot before saying good bye to Amsterdam. We visited Restaurant Haesje Claes which was recommended by the Tourist Centre and in fact we should be visiting them for dinner during our first night in Amsterdam but due to our itineraries, we kept it for 2nd Night. Comparing to The Pantry from the first night, Haesje Claes is bigger, catering to more seating with 2 levels of dining area. Environment was definitely more rustic with wooden flooring, furnishing and given a homely feel under the orange lighting as well the hospitality from the service crews. Place was bustling with people and if you looked around, it feels like you are entering a grandma's house with old school stuff that you have never seen before. Though it may be old school design but I still like the low lighting ambiance that create a good atmosphere with burning flame on the candle stand. Worrying about being filled fast and Since Im looking for Stammpot in my meal, we cant go wrong with their fixed set menu "Amsterdam Menu 24,95 which consists of 3 courses and a cup of coffee. As for myself, I took the opportunity to have some beer again! This is another version of Pea Soup I had with ingredients in it. Taste was pleasant with sausage, bacon, carrots, potatoes and celery in combination. The style of soup and even the side that comes with it was a total different picture from what I had last night and was filling. Instead of toast, they had a slice of rye bread with thin slice of bacon for pairing. Time for seafood and that's the main reason why we had Poached Salmon Fillet. Not much of Wow Factor here but Salmon was cook to the correct doneness and given the buttery and herb flavour Bearnaise Sauce amd lemon squeeze, the fillet was down in my stomach within 3 minutes, leaving the mashed potatoes behind. Topping up the Set with another main course, Stampotten. There are 3 in the menu to choose from and I had the one with Sauerkraut. Meatball was savoury but I do prefer the ones I had last night. Sausages, so to speak was an average fare, not something out of expectation. Sauerkraut with meatball, sausage and bacon - 16,25 Dessert Our meal comes to an end with the Lemon Pie as the last course. At least the colors had brighten up the dish and it gave a refreshing feel with its fruits on the plate (Kiwi and Orange). Lemon Pie with Cream Having Sausages and Sauerkraut in our meals these two days, I find that Dutch Cuisine is kind of close to what a German Cuisine is. I was here for dineer, and we saw a mouse walk past a few times. I tolt the waitress, see was laconically: "Mice often run here, we can not do anything, that happened in old houses." That is nonsense, I live also in a house from 1620 and i have never mice. This is a lack of hygiene. The mice also run overnight on the tables and countertops. The wait would be half an hour. In fact, the host tried persuading other guests to eat at the bar next door. I checked out the bar next door, and preferred a quieter atmosphere to enjoy my dinner, so I returned to the restaurant and waited. Originally what was supposed to be 30 min. wait turned into 10 min. Persistence is the way to be. After sitting down, the waitress took my order which included: pea soup with sausage and bacon, herring with onions, meatball stamppot. The food tasted fine, but since this was the first time eating Dutch food, I wasn't sure if it was truly authentic or not very impressive dishes. The dinner itself was a never-ending 2.5 hours. The waitress constantly forgot my mere existence and by the time she remembered to bring out my dessert, I simply asked for the check along with my dessert. Walking through the doors, you feel like you are transported back in time. Victorian style lighting, wood planked walls, and stately leather dining chairs. Thee service was excellent, and the restaurant staff were knowledgeable and accommodating with my gluten free needs. They also had some delicious gluten-free bread, complimentary before the meal. I ordered the sauerkraut hotchpotch and my husband had the original. Both include mashed potatoes, a big meatball, sausage, bacon and a gravy-type sauce. It was very good and way more appetizing than it looks! Sides of Brown mustard, pickles and pearl onions add some crunch and acid to lighten things up. Had the fish platter. Eel was interesting. Herring and mackerel were great. Trout and shrimp are good. Esp with the potato. Def try to have it with a sip of the hard stuff. I recommend you call ahead and make reservations. When we arrived there was no one to greet us at the "wait to be seated" sign for approx 15 min. At first I thought the restaurant must be full and it would be a wait for a table even is we had reservations. But as we were led through the restaurant to our table, the place was practically empty. Hmm..ok...once seated we were greeted promptly by our server and took our drink orders. They do have a great selection of beers and Jenevers. After our drinks arrived with bread service our server was nowhere to be found for another 30 minutes. Meanwhile the restaurant filled up quick! Hence my recommendation for reservations. Our food came out in a timely matter. We had the Caviar and Smoked Salmon for appetizers and the Stamppot for our main course. The food was delicious and very filling. I didn't have any room for dessert regrettably. After requesting our check we had to wait another 20 minutes to get our bill. I would've have given this place 5 stars if not for the long wait times during the course of service. Overall I would recommend you stop in here to have a traditional Dutch meal! It took a while to find a restaurant with local food. Haesje Claes is a great find. Good fish choices, nice local appetizers. Old quaint place adds to the dining experience. Of course, waitresses were pleasant and professional. If you need to experience local Netherlandish food, head for this place. read more

Our first taste of real Dutch food, and it was not a good introduction. Husband ordered pea soup because it's ahis favorite. What arrived was a large bowl of tepid soup filled with slices of what seemed like hot dog. I had better luck with my soup being plenty hot. I am very critical of flavor and value; however this place has both. I had the salmon appetizer and duck entree which fell in my mouth leaving succulent happiness. I also has dessert, beer, & wine and left feeling like I underpaid. The service was also excellent. Because I'm critical my only complaint would be for them to carry wine by the glass which reflects the quality of their food.
